Looks sharp. I'm really surprised there was no big Convoy going with this down the street. Their business train is now the size of any of the other major carriers what does not seem to go out nearly as much at least here in the US

The livery on the diesel engines reminds me of Erie Lackawana livery. Nice video.

I hope to get out to CO and ride the Narrow Guage Silverton to Durango Steam Train. There are dozens of videos on it both summer and Winter.

It wasn’t all glamor in the steam days. The only forward view the engineer had was to look out the side window

I don't know why they do this. They have a steam train, clearly not under it's own power, being pushed by modern locomotives, but they have the boiler going. Is this for show ? They have 2 1930s locomotives but they are being towed. It was a big deal back in the 1920s when they actually were being used. Even in the 1950s, there still were steam trains being used in yards. In Albany New York I remember seeing a long with the locomotives that looked like the two in the middle here, that were Penn Central, pulling the passenger trains to NYC, they had a little steam engine that was used in the yard to move cars around, instead of tying up one of the new diesel engines. But after the 50s they retired the steam engines Seeing where the water towers were and the coal dumps, they had to stop about every 20 to 30 miles to fill up the water in the boiler. It was a big deal. It was not a non stop even for a short run from say Allentown to Philadelphia. They had to stop at least twice to refill the water. They had the pull down spigot for easy filling but still it took time. And in the winter that was a real pain because they had to have men at each tank keeping the stoves filled and running to keep the water from freezing I remember in upstate NY near Canada they had tanks along the sides of hills where streams filled them. They even had streams where they built dams and retention ponds and had hoses that they sucked water into the engine using the engine to create a vacuum

I don't know what you THINK you saw, but CP 2816 was 100% under its own power and pulling the entire train.

When necessary, the diesel behind the water cars is used for braking. The steam engine is doing all the work. I guess the F units are along for the ride, and as a show of company heritage.

Not trying to disparage steam locomotives but they can be temperamental. Often times the diesels will come along for backup and to save coal or oil and water. They can also provide power for AC or heat in the coaches. Often time’s railroads require a diesel to be present for insurance reasons.

Oil burning, no smoke like coal. They weren't pushing in this video.

@@jasonasselin I could see hot vapors coming out of the stacks of the Diesel electric Locomotive. I was plowing snow one night in Portage MI next to RR tracks .. a Diesel burning train went by about 20 MPH .. It was popping and smoking and shooting huge orange flames into the air. I think the EPA and Greta Thurnbuerg would be very upset of they saw that kind of black smoke being emitted into the atmosphere.

@mikeskidmore6754 the diesel right behind the water cars is idling. When needed, it's used for braking. Union Pacific does the same thing with the Big Boy and 844.

@mikeskidmore6754 in addition to what others have commented, the diesel is also used for the required PTC equipment. UP installed PTC on the 4014 this past winter, so it no longer needs a PTC outfitted diesel in the consist. UP will continue to used a diesel for back up & dynamic braking on mountain stretches, as logic would dictate.
