Beautiful in Harpers Ferry Jason. What a shot of the steam train coming through the trees, & over the crossing just awesome. Not too far from being back in Canada now after its epic trip. Bet you & JT had a great time chasing trains in Iowa. 😊👍

After watching all your videos of this chase (and Jaw Tooth's, too), I just noticed the KCS cars mixed in with the CP. Same basic paint and style. Good seeing you guys in each other's videos.

There is another Harper's Ferry, its the original, and its on the east coast, it recently suffered a devastating bridge fire, that shut down both freight and passenger traffic until repairs can be made.

Common practice to include diesels in the consist for breakdowns on a RR main line and to provide dynamic braking to save the old locos brake shoes. Sometimes even electrical power for pax cars heating/cooling/lights.

Question of the day. Does the heat from a steam locomotive set off the defect detectors? Inquiring minds want to know.
@davidfuller5816 ай бұрын
I've seen videos of the 844 setting off hot box detectors, it's far from unheard of.

So what is in cars 2, 3, and 4 behind the locomotive? Fuel oil and water?

People getting all bent out of shape about the steamer not doing all the work are funny. Hudsons are pretty well known to be not great at starting trains or climbing much of a grade at all - they're great at speed, but they have pretty low tractive effort - only around 45,000 pounds without booster - because there are more unpowered axles than there are powered ones. They all have/had booster trucks for a reason.

It is easier to get the train moving with diesel assist.

I'm sorry, I have little interest in watching a great steam locomotive be shoved up a grade by a couple of diesels. I have chased steam all over the US and Canada for the past 35+ years and this does nothing for me. 2816 is being shoved along most of this trip and the Classic F-units were being dragged along for show. I know I sound like a steam snob, but this is sad. One of my fondest memories was being on the 3 day, 385 mile long Cariboo special from BCRails shops in West Vancouver to Kelly Lake and back.....all behund steam in some of the most beautiful remote areas of Western BC....no diesels, just 100% CP Steam...behind CP 3716.

@davidfuller5816 ай бұрын
It was working - you can hear it, they don't bark like that without some work being done - but 2816 is, like most Hudson types, absolutely useless on a grade as they don't have enough weight on the drivers.
@rickpalmer95186 ай бұрын
! 4500 hp engine (no ptc) and how many engines 2 1500 hp diesels and one regular (With ptc) and how many passenger cars!!!, it usually pulled 6 when it was on the west island commuter run out of Montreal QC in the late 50's as a old timer and member of the Canadian Railway Historical Association. There's a good explanation on latest UP 4014 (now has ptc )recent explanation on PTC POSITIVE TRAIN CONTROL and why a diesel with steam is a benefit, OOOK

Now that CP and a Mexican Railroad are in cahoots how come the Mexican railroad doesn't have a locomotive on it

It does, it's the KCS portion of the merged railroads.
