For Europeans it looks like a disused railway because converting them into cycle paths is quite common and those look quite recognisable.

In Germany some railway lines that were no longer in use were converted into cycle paths. Advantage: The routes are flat.

Canada has also weird borders. It had a 49 year "war", the so called Whisky War with Denmark over the Hans Island.

There are some legends about the origin of that small village on the Vennbahn called "Mützenich". Literally translated it would mean "Cap not" or "Warm hat not". So one legend says, that Charles the Great was offered a warm hat at that place (Mützenich is quite cold climatically) and he just answered "Mütze nich"/"Hat not". Another bit more boring legend says that the cold winds always blew the hats away from the inhabitants. In reality, the name probably comes from the Romans and the place was named "Mutiniacum" by them. A Roman Legionnaire was found there and his helmet is still on the village's coat of arms today...

Borders in Europe are extremely long too. Between USA and Canada it is almost a straight line, ours are wrinkled up! And we've got enclaves, exclaves, counter enclaves, so what could have been 100 km becomes 2000 km of complexity.

I live close to this place and cycle there a lot. This kind of borders is forcing the countries to work together. The main road between Aachen and Monschau ist just going thru Belgium for about 3km. Germany was allowed to continue to maintain it after it suddenly was on Belgium territory. Both countries have agreed to allow police and firefighters to just do the things they have to do criss cross thru the border. Today the borders within the EU/Schengen-area are a non issue anyway for the normal people. The fact that the Vennbahn area is Belgium made certain things much easier when the bicycle-way was build. Belgium laws are more flexible if you want to give the cyclists the right of way for example. In Roetgen are a number of crossings where this is used.

There's a joke here: "What borders on stupi dity?" "Canada and Mexico!"😂

That's actually a somewhat "boring" situation. There is a village right on top of the Durch/German border, which is unusual like the Vennbahn thing, but actually affects people :-) Example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoCQoIZ5f8d7ms0
