I just picked up a 1 owner ‘03 V8 4Runner with 146k miles and all maintenance service records including its original window sticker for $4k from my old man’s real estate customer yesterday!! Apparently, 6 months ago she went outside to start it and nothing happened, so she went out and bought a brand new TRD for $65k. She offered to have it towed and “fixed” for me since I think she really just needed it moved off the property of her old house.. I told her that might not be necessary, and yesterday I drove out to her place with a new battery, my girlfriend, and $4k in hand. I put in the new battery and it started right up (of course). It runs PURRRFECT!! Needs a good detail after sitting for as long as it has, but I definitely got the deal of a lifetime!! Can’t wait to start building it out!!

I've had my V8 Limited 4Runner for about 2 years now and you've helped me a ton, since day one! I remember looking up your video about things to watch out for when buying one, on the way to meet the guy to check the vehicle out. One of the best decisions I've made to buy this thing - I got it for $4,800 USD with 153k miles. Thanks for the content, keep it up, you make us 4th gen owners feel great!!!

I totally get you on the pricing on the 4th and 5th Gen. 4Runners. I had a fully built 4th Gen with the V8 and I thought I'd never sell it, until someone made me an offer I couldn't refuse (yep, prices are crazy.) I used that opportunity to buy a brand new 5th Gen TRD ORP. Yep - crazy expensive, but I don't have any regrets, honestly. I LOVE my new 2022 (now 2 YO) 4Runner in Lunar Rock.

I grew up in pakistan and moved to pnw for grad school. This truck's twin goes by name of Hilux Surf has a fierce reputation that it can go anywhere from rugged mountains to desert and snow. I always wanted it back in the day. After moving to north america I got my first 3rd gen 4runner. It was rwd but still feels very capable on rough terrain. About a month ago I found a v6 4th gen 4runner just under 5 grand! It runs and drives so good. I deep cleaned and shampooed it (there was a mouse carcass in the cabin air filter :D). The mechanic said its solid, and just had to do the rear axle seal. Happy that the v6 has timing chain so I didn't have to do that like on the 3rd gen. Have been watching your channel and very inspired to do new tires and lift soon!

Great video. One year I got a 2006 SR5 for my teen-aged son and daughter, sadly not the V8, but I could not be happier. I shopped and shopped and though I live in TUcson, AZ, I found this one at a small lot in Phoenix. Great condition, only flaw on my inspection was a torn outer CV boot. They knocked $250 off the price, and I got it for $10250 with 180,000 miles. Went through and changed oil, transfer case, and differential fluids. Only problem since has been a light bulb here and there. Could not be happier. Solid Toyota, maintain it well, be happy! Thanks for your videos.

Good video! I’ve been a Toyota/4Runner/Land Cruiser fan going back to the days before I could drive. My wife is getting a 2013 SR5 premium in a few days, coming on a truck. This is after she fell in love with a 2008 Highlander Sport that met it’s unfortunate end a couple weeks ago in a terrible accident. I think my casual mentions of 4Runners over the years, and pricing comps led her to a 4 Runner! Looking forward to getting behind the wheel of this, to see if a later 5th Gen might be the way I go when it’s time for me to trade in my current SUV. I also appreciate the soft close rear hatch, but that's pretty minor. The new ones are really nice too but if I was going to get a new one I think I'll just wait until it's actually modernized with the 6th gen. As of now I'd just be going from old truck to slightly newer old truck, which losing the main thing I like about the old one.

No one ever seems to mention that the 4th Gen V6 comes with selective mode four wheel drive. It is not offered in the 5th Gen in the US. I appreciate being able to use AWD in variable onroad conditions (i.e. spots of ice and snow) but still retain rear wheel drive for better gas mileage and wear. I especially find low range AWD for maneuring my travel trailer into campspots!
@pgirard26 Жыл бұрын
Yup. That right there. Could not have said that better myself.
@randyshein1453 Жыл бұрын
What do you mean? The 5th gens come with selective 4WD. You can select to go into 4WD or stay in 2WD. The only 5th gen that doesn’t have that are the 2x4 ‘s and the limited that comes with full time 4WD
@pgirard26 Жыл бұрын
@@randyshein1453 4th gen v6's have a selection of: 2wd, AWD high (4wd open t-case), 4wd high (50\50 locked center diff), 4wd low AWD (open t-case) and 4wd low (50\50 locked t-case). 5th gen's, excluding Limited, has: 2wd, 4wd high (50\50 locked center diff), and 4wd low (50\50 locked center diff). The beauty of the Selective Mode t-case is the ability to switch into AWD (under 50ish mph) on the fly under slippery conditions. Think of it like the opposite of how a typical Subaru AWD system works. Instead of a front biased AWD system (Subaru), the 4th gen 4runner Select Mode t-case allows for a REAR biased AWD system. The only 5th gen 4runner that comes close to this anymore is the Limited version. That is what @billthompson301 was getting at. All 4th gen V6's come this way. And besides slippery road conditions that @billthompson301 mentioned, which I have used consistantly every winter so close to the Sierra Nevada's, I personally use it for corrugated\chewed up graded hill climbs when off road. Having a small portion of the power to the front wheels pulling while the rears push is awesome.

Well the 5th gen 4runner was my dream truck, so I bought a base used 2015 SR5 4runner for around 22k but I put my own mods on it and I made it better than that ridiculous 70k TRDpro. On the interior, I added leather seats with heating, new screen, cup holders, carbon fiber trimming, led lights etc. On the exterior, I did a 4 inch lift kit, all new EMU suspension and a custom wide body sitting on ko2 285's with blacked out rays rims. All new led lights, KC lights, marker lights and all... Basically the mods cost like 8k, but still for 30k I got something better than a 70k TRDpro in my book. Soon I'm gonna add that ladder, roof storage and probably delete the plastic rear bumper and put an overland metal one, same with the front. I only did a viper cut up front, but I might put a metal high overland bumper up there.

The 4.7 V8 is where it's at. It is seriously bullet proof and considered one of the best engines of all time.

I swapped the 5th gen 8.2 rear axle with a locker out of a 21’ year model into my 2005. Direct swap and viola, rear locker. Direct bolt up without modification if anyone is wondering.

I have an 05 SR5 v8. I loved it from the day I got it. Only 168,000 on it, at 65 years old I was hoping it’s the last vehicle I’d need. The roar of the exhaust and mud tires was better than the radio. Unfortunately,my truck got cancer. Surface rust turned fatal on the frame. Heartbreaking 😢, it’s unsafe to drive and I can only sell it for parts. I just got a 2019 4Runner and it’s by far the nicest vehicle I’ve ever had. 60,000 miles $27,000. I swore I’d never spend that kind of money, but what you gonna do. Get a trailblazer or Bronco? Don’t think so

What's the identify 4th jeans with the V8 only have full-time four-wheel drive with no rear Locker only a center Locker? Also dose the 4th gen have atrac? If so that's basically just as good as crawl control

I’ve always found it odd that Toyota did away with the manual transfer case shift lever in favor of the dial on the 4 gens.
@CanadianGearhead Жыл бұрын
Agreed, that was definitely a downgrade
@timalan7406 Жыл бұрын
They still have the manual transfer case shift lever, but only on the TRD Off Road and PRO models.

as a 5th gen trail premium owner im glad i got one and wouldnt trade it despite the price, however i still want a 4th gen V8 they are badass and cheapish.

I currently own a 5th gen, and it's great, don't get me wrong even as a plain Jane SR5, but man I miss my 4th too. 5th is better for long highway trips in my opinion but the 4th is quicker off the line and handles better for daily driving. I think the answer is both 😅 I'll be getting another 4th at some point!

So get the 4th Gen because my lady has a V8 that makes Audi Q5s feel like crap.

I'm very curious as to what the next generation of 4runner will have. You're right that there definitely won't be a V8, but I do hope they at least maintain a V6. It will almost surely be turbo'd or something from the factory which will hurt reliability a bit. What would you think about the possibility of a hybrid 4Runner? If any company knows how to make a good hybrid it's Toyota, and if they do it right it could maintain the 4R capability while fixing the poor gas mileage issue.
@CanadianGearhead Жыл бұрын
I used to hate hybrids but now that the market is filled with EV cars I think they're a much better solution. I'd be shocked if the next 4runner doesn't get the turbo 4cyl from the new Tacoma
@PocketsandOutlaw Жыл бұрын
@@CanadianGearhead Agreed. I'd take a hybrid over a pure EV any day. Toyota has proven they can still be very reliable vehicles. If they could make a good long-range hybrid 4R it could even prove to be a great overland vehicle. Imagine a 4runner with a 600-700 mile range? That would be pretty sweet. As long as we maintain the ability to customize, that is. Even on the new gas 4R the "Toyota safety sense" throws a bit of a wrench into lifting efforts.

@@PocketsandOutlawexactly. I’m totally in love with my 2023 40th anniversary edition…The only thing I’d trade it in for in 4-5 years would be a newer hybrid version that’s proving equally capable and reliable and fun to drive while having 29 MPG on the highway instead of 19….As much as I’m in love with my ride - it’s hard to argue with getting 10 mpg more on every Gallon of gasoline purchased. That’s significantly different cost of use.

I’ve owned an 07 Sport and now on my 2nd ‘15 Trail. Had my 07 and previous 15 get totaled by careless drivers within the last 2 year. Small observations: 4th gen has better visor design but the 4th gen has inferior climate controls. I didn’t like the actual controls and the center vent was positioned in a way that it hit me in the hand. Much improved in the 5th. Low mileage, clean, less rusty 4th gens are in the $20K range in the states. Less rust is one reason to but later models but also NEVER buy anything driven up north. I’m in the south. But yea, 4th gens are a great value!
