There seems to be a lot of confusion about what exactly is going on in the storyline. And i definitely do understand the confusion since back when I first played MoS, I neither really knew what was going on. But after having played all three games with Styx: " _Of_ _Orcs_ _and_ _Men_ (2012)", _Styx:_ _Master_ _of_ _Shadows_ (2014)" and " _Styx:_ _Shards_ _of_ _Darkness_ (2017)", I've started to make better sense of the whole thing. And I'll try my best to explain it here. You actually never get to play as the "original Styx" in any of the three games. Rather you play as his most autonomous copy, who we'll call "Styx Jr" for convenience. Looking at the timeline, the story of Styx Jr starts in this game Styx: Master of Shadows. Then Styx: Shards of Darkness takes place about 20-25 years after. And finally Of Orcs and men about 100 years after. But let's start right from the beginning with the original Styx. Styx was a respected orc who grew up in the traditions of the orc culture being the son of a shaman, a very respected member of the tribe. At 30 years old he officially becomes a shaman himself and no longer has to obey his tribe. And so he wants to seek and study the world tree with its mystical amber and hidden powers. So he goes on a journey to find it. You don't really have any information about the following process but he somehow gets in contact with this amber and it completely transforms him. Transforms him into a whole new race: "The goblin". Faced with his new appearance he falls into deep misery and is filled with shame over not being an orc any longer. He perceives himself as a rakash/monster and knows that he can never return to his tribe in this state. So he decides his only possibility to get back is to seek the heart of the tree and study it, so that he can maybe use it to become an orc again. This becomes his life goal. But on top of all his shame, he's further tormented by the fact that he now hears a constant flow of voices from other "creatures of the amber", the elves, which gives him headeaches twisting his mind. He's basically in a constant state of torture and he tries to suicide multiple times but the amber in his veins won't let him die. It apparantly takes Styx more than 200 years to get to Akenash, the floating city held by the world tree. And we don't know how many years he spends there before we reach the beginning of "Styx: Master of shadows". So Styx is atleast 230 years old, maybe even 300+ years old when he spits out his most autonomous clone yet: Styx Jr. With the amber Styx got a bunch of abilities such as becoming temporarily invisible and being able to perceive his surroundings very clearly with amber vision. But his most important ability is the ability to spit out clones of himself. He decides himself how much of his abilities and intelligence he will pass on to his clones. But normally he just makes brainless ones without memory to distract or kill enemies. At some point though Styx realize that in order to reach the world tree, he has to get in contact with the leader of the tower, Barimen. So he makes his most intelligent clone yet, Styx Jr, and then turns himself in. As planned he gets imprisoned in the most secure cell in the whole tower and is set up to be interrogated by Barimen himself. Whilst Styx is locked up he subliminally orders Styx Jr. to do all sorts of dirty work for him to set him up for the meeting with Barimen. Styx Jr. who is the first clone with a sense of self and free will then does all these tasks thinking he's doing it for himself when in reality he's just a puppet working for his master. When Styx Jr. as part of the plan frees Styx from the cell, he suddenly realizes that he's been manipulated all the time, that all his memories are fake and that he's practically just an inferior clone. Yet he has free will and it is this free will that suddenly becomes very important to him. He wants to kill Styx in order to think for himself. This is what becomes his first "genuine desire". Slowly Styx Jr. starts to decipher between when his thoughts are his own and when they are suggestions planted by Styx and this allows him to not blindly follow orders anymore. But he's still a product of Styx so Styx can always sense when he's near, which makes an assasination impossible. He still gives it a try but fails miserably with a dagger to his back. He's however saved by an Elf ambassador who shares his goal in order to save the world tree. And so Styx Jr. is put into an amber cocoon to become reborn cutting his link to Styx. This allows him to approach Styx without being detected. Meanwhile Styx is on the way to reach the world tree and Styx Jr. follow him. When he finally reaches Styx they're both inside the world tree where Styx is breaking down the heart's defense. He gets spotted for fighting another clone and Styx keeps sending clones at him to keep him at bay. But when Styx break down the last defense he's attacked by elven spirits and Styx Jr uses this opportunity to get his hands on the heart himself. Now Styx Jr. stands with the destiny in his hands. He knows he cannot win over Styx in a fight but what he can do is ruin his life and make Styx' 200+ years of suffering worth nothing at all. And so he squashes the heart and leap over the cliff choosing his own death rather than letting Styx kill him. But Styx Jr. doesn't die. Instead he falls into a giant amber pool multiplying into thousands upon thousands of clones and they devour Styx. And with the magical power of the heart being gone, the whole tower of Akenash crashes towards the swampy grounds at the surface. And it's from down here that Styx Jr. wake up seeing thousands of clueless copies walking around, not knowing who he is or where he came from. The only thing he remembers is that his name is apparantly Styx. He's the only intelligent one of his kind and he just wants to get the hell out of there. And that is how "The Fall of Akenash" happened and how Styx Jr. fathered "The Goblin Plague". Hope this explanation was helpful. Obviously some of it is interpretation but I tried keeping it as true as possible to the information given throughout various cutscenes etc. Feel free to ask questions and I'll do my best to answer. Thanks!
@theeye82764 жыл бұрын
That was great! It's good to know that it's not confirmed that styx jr. survived jumping into the amber at the end of master of shadows. It's also possible that a new clone Styx jr. jr. (III) was born in the after math and happened to be intelligent as well with the real Styx jr. dying from the fall/amber.

Then why does Styx in Shards of Darkness remember things he shouldn't remember. He kills Barimen who was in the first game.
@cragscleft16584 жыл бұрын
@@Brandon_Y. EDIT: I didn't realise "Barimen" is a surname/title rather than first name. So when you kill Barimen in Shards of Darkness, you're not killing Barimen from Master of Shadows but Aaron who became barimen after his father's death. In that way it also makes sense that the leader in "Of Orcs and Men" is called Barimen too. My mistake I also got extremely confused when he appeared in "Shards of Darkness". It essentially makes no sense since he was already killed by Styx in "Master of Shadows". And suddenly there he is again. To make matters even more absurd, Barimen and Aaron also appear in "Of Orcs and Men" basically rising from the dead for the 2nd time. So yeah there is no explanation when it comes to that. Just the developers not keeping the storyline tight throughout the games. Overall the whole narrative is just vague. There are so many questions left unanswered and the games differ in consistency. This is also why the summary was so hard to make. You really have to take any information you can get to try and fit the pieces together. As goes for your question about Styx Jr. remembering Barimen: It seems that Styx Jr. slowly starts remembering stuff as time passes. Basically in "Of Orcs and Men" Styx Jr. is subconsciously aware that he fathered the goblin plague. But his consciousness tries to supress this fact. And it actually becomes an important decision later in the game whether you accept the truth or continue living in denial. And as we know, part of what Styx Jr. remembered before the fall of Akenash were memories of the original Styx. Memories that had been given to him as part of the manipulation. And even though Styx Jr. learned to decipher the fake memories from the real ones, everything got reset with the fall of Akenash. And so as time went by Styx Jr. might have remembered bits and pieces here and there but thought of all his memories as his own. And in that way it sorta makes sense that he remembers Barimen. I know this is hairy as fuck and I'm afraid I might be forcing a meaning unto something meaningless. But it's the best I can do.

so, let me see if i can understand this right: Styx was once an Orc who has been experimented and turned into a Goblin. not just any Goblin, the very first Goblin to exist. and not only that, but there were two Styx. the original Styx and his clone, Rakash. Styx wanted to be an Orc again and Rakash jumped in the amber and created the Goblin race. Styx dies by getting devoured by the Goblins and Rakash survived but loses his memory and he calls himself Styx. did i miss anything?

SPOILERS FOR THE END The line where he says, "I'm the one and only Styx, and I don't know if it makes me proud... or sick to my stomach," is interesting! It seems to convey that Styx Prime and our Rakash/"Emet"/Styx Jr have combined into one being. Styx Prime is disgusted by his new form because he's been an orc his whole life, whereas Styx Jr takes pride in his ability to escape notice and crawl and climb into small and hard-to-reach places. But the new Styx is torn between disgust AND pride. This makes me think that 1) Styx Prime ended up in the amber after the other goblins attacked him, and 2) as the only two conscious minds entering the amber during the World Tree's death, and since they are VERY similar (Styx Jr being a clone of Styx Prime until very recently), they were 'templates' of a sort which dictated the form and function of not only all the other goblins, but also the personality of the lone surviving Styx.

I just realized watching the opening, Original Styx has the same issue as his clone, his clone only knows that killing Styx is his desire, and not that of someone else, similarly, Styx is also unsure about many things because of the voices, the only desire he knows is his own is the heart of the world tree.

The Clone's motivations were at first the same as Styx, because he thought he was the real deal, but after discovering he was a clone, his plan became getting revenge on Styx. Why? Because Styx used him and wishing for revenge was the first conscious decision he came up with on his own.

Man, Styx has had a rough life. Both as his original orc turned goblin self. And then as his clone self. It does make sense in a way. Which is the styx we all know and love. My little theory is that after he had lost his memories and called himself styx was when the Goblin horde that we herd about in the First game when his kind had actually become a race, though he was the only one with intelligence, and we can also say that since he said he was the first of these rats could be a mixing of the memories, and so he wanted to forget and probably spend decades trying to do so. yeah basically i am saying that, when he says we fathered them, is what happens here 1:42:12. And when the second game takes place it is possible he has suppressed most of the stuff in his early life, that is until (Of Orcs and Men) takes place. And that's when he was haunted by his past self that probably was lurking in there somewhere and was trying to forget it all but in the end (Depends on what you choose) he'll have to live with the knowledge, and move on.

So Styx was an orc shaman who wanted to study amber and he got cursed and turned into a goblin so he decides to make a clone to steal the Heart. But then the clone finds out and Styx stabs the clone a few times until finally the clone destroys the Heart and falls into the lake. The clone creates clones that kill Styx and one clone becomes the new Styx? That's it right?
@NoctisAttano8 жыл бұрын
There's a chance that this is actually Styx reborn, maybe with a twist. When you (the copy) try to kill him he says that he had tried to kill himself several times and failed because of the amber. Considering the way he died and the place saturated with amber, could support the idea of a more complex rebirth. They might've merged into one mind. This next part can be easily justified by the amnesia following the event, but if you consider an influence on the subconscious level, it also ties well with the other arguments. In the end he seems to fully embrace the identity, but has mixed feelings when it comes to being sick or proud of what he is. Before this, the clone was fond of the form, but disliked the identity, the deeds, while the original was fond of his identity and approved his deeds, but disliked his form. Furthermore, though still easily justified by the amnesia, consider that the copy had strong feelings against Styx. Given the choice, he would probably embrace any other identity. Of course, he does not have a choice, and the whole thing about being proud or sick of the fact that he is the Styx can be strictly related to those mindless clones or children, but it ties nicely with a bit of story from Of Orcs and Men. The game was developed before Styx - Master of Shadows and the story might not take into consideration every detail from the latter game, but, taken as it is, it would further support the theory. [Spoilers - possible spoilers related to Of Orcs and Men] In this game that takes place after the events of Styx - Master of Shadows, Styx encounters his alter ego. In that conversation he acknowledges that he is the original, the one who fathered all the other goblins. He seems to remember everything, including the fact that he used to be an orc. While he is conflicted about accepting his past, his status as the one who fathered all the clones, his origins as an orc he knows it to be true. There are no hints to differentiate the Styx who used to be an orc from the one who fathered all these other goblins or the one who is now. While the clones or children coming out to kill the original Styx in Styx - Master of Shadows do come from the copy, since the copy comes from the original, it make sense that they also com from him. If the original was reborn, then indeed he would fit the role described in the revelation presented in Of Orcs and Men. Also, their minds being combined would explain the duality in the character's view over the past in his conversation with his alter ego in Of Orcs and Men. As a similar concept, I can find some connections to Naruto. When he dispels a clone, all the information gathered by that clone is returned to the creator. That could include a new perspective over things. In conclusion, I do believe that the one emerging is a reborn Styx, with the extra perspective brought by the copy.

Sasuke Uchiha oh that makes sense. Hopefully Styx-Shards of Darkness can clear some more stuff up like why Styx doesn't need amber in Of Orcs and Men (I'm sure that in the lore there's an actual reason besides the game creators thinking of amber as an explosive rather than a drug). I also want to know what happened to Styx's orc family seeing that Styx promised to come home and now he seems to be running amok being an assassin/thief
