You guys should look for the salted, peanut, and yogurt coffee as well. BTW, you need to stir up the hot egg coffee to mix the bitter coffee with the sweet egg mixture...should taste like a liquid tiramisu when done properly.

Hey! Just stumbled upon your channel and I love the casual style that you guys have throughout the video! One thing you should definitely try during your stay in Hanoi is Bun Dau Mam Tom, which includes vermicelli noodles and shrimp paste sauce. The sauce can smell a bit funky and you only should dip conservatively, but it's really good once you get over the funk. If the weather is too hot and humid, sugarcane juice aka Nuoc Mia should sort you out really nicely. A channel that covers a lot of Hanoian food in English is Addicted to Vietnam just for reference of what you should try out next. Hopefully this helps, and welcome to my hometown 🥰

Thanks so much! So happy to hear you enjoy our videos. Thank you for the recommendations. We really appreciate it! Unfortunately we are no longer in Vietnam but definitely will plan to come back and we’ll be sure to check that out. Vietnam is one of our favourite places in South East Asia😃

@@Roadmap2Adventures No, absolutely DO NOT try bun dau mam tom unless you know and love shrimp paste (many Vietnamese people cannot eat it so I don't even know why people recommend it to newbies unless they be trolling). If you do want to try bun dau mam tom, ask for the flavored fish sauce (nuoc mam cham) over the shrimp paste. Save the shrimp paste for when your palate has evolved enough that you can eat something like that...and it may never get there so don't put yourself off of other Vietnamese foods by foraying into shrimp paste (mam tom or any word with "mam" in it...a little bit cooked in the food is fine, but straight up as a dip and such is a no-no for beginners).

I am Vietnamese, the rule when you try any food in Vietnam, you should add the vegestable into the dish (little by little to figure which one you like more). And make a perfect bite, a little of everthing of the bowl into a spoon and taste it. However, the flavour in the North is a bit salty to me, I live in HCMC, the South, and the flavour in the South is more flavourful and if you travel to Mekong delta, food is getting more sweet. However, the great thing about Vietnamese food is it can be customized, you can add (vinegar, lemon, herbs, soy sauce, fish sauce, chilli, shrimp paste,...) you like to meet your liking.

That’s so interesting! Thanks for sharing. We love how customizable Vietnamese food is and it’s interesting to see the differences in regions.

@@Roadmap2Adventures I think it's an extremely biased opinion when it's mentioned that food in Hanoi is salty whilst food in HCMC is more "flavorful". LOL! I'd say food in Hanoi is salty, in the south is sweet (overly sweet and they put it into everything so you cannot differentiate between savory or sweet dishes anymore), in the Central region hotter (also some of the best foods come from the Central region).

All of it looks so good! It's interesting that every restaurant seems to serve things different ways - we tried a couple of the same dishes and the presentation was totally different! Maybe thats what happened with your spring rolls? hahaha

We definitely ordered a different type of spring roll because the filling was different but it ended up being so delicious so sometimes mistakes work out well. The food in Hanoi was sooo good! What was your favourite dish?

@@Roadmap2Adventures Hello fellow Canadians! I'm Vietnamese and I live in Quebec city. Banh Cuon is my favorite breakfast when I was in Vietnam. Banh Cuon is expected to be served with Gio Cha and cilantro, fried onion. That's it. The one you had is not Gio Cha but Cha Chien which is less expensive than Gio Cha. There's a group of University students giving free tour in Hanoi. They do it just to have a chance to practice their English. Google search to find them. With local guides, you will eat Hanoi specialties at the right places.

@@Roadmap2Adventures what you ordered is banh cuon, a steamed rice roll with pork, daikon, and woodear mushrooms. (: What you were describing in the video is goi cuon which is a spring roll (eaten cold, usually with pb hoisin sauce/ some regions do fish sauce)
@doodahgurlie
@doodahgurlie Жыл бұрын
Yeah, goi cuon and banh cuon are totally different dishes. Goi cuon (spring rolls) are what Westerners are used to, but Viets-in-the-know, know banh cuon is delicious, too. We love eating it at home in the US, but it's a lot harder to make than spring rolls...so we resort to hacks to get our fix. LOL! Banh cuon has a steamed component to it that gives the rice sheets a soft, silky, nice mouth feel (vs the thinner and chewier rice paper used to wrap spring rolls). They are also eaten differently in that you use your hand to eat the spring rolls, whereas you have to use utensils to eat banh cuon. Make sure to get the ones with all the fixings. I toss all the herbs on and douse it it in the flavored fish sauce before shoveling it down my pie hole. LOL

You guys did a good job on finding your own foods, but I highly recommend those unfamiliar to do a food tour in every city that offers it in Vietnam as many Westerners don't know how to eat the food properly or find the best foods. Every person I've seen do the food tours loves it and said they learned way more than food-related stuff on the tours. Also happy you guys mistaken goi cuon for banh cuon as banh cuon is extremely loved (by me!! Hahaha!) but I'd put the herbs on top and douse it with the dipping sauce then eat (although dipping is likely more common in Hanoi). Your bun cha shouldn't be as sour as you guys mentioned so not sure if too much of something like the garlic in vinegar is added or something to make it that sour....a food tour would have given you a better experience here as many Westerners mention bun cha was their favorite dish in Vietnam (Bourdain obviously thought so as he took Barack there to eat it).

Hello. Both of you did well with the usage of the chopsticks. The husband is better with the proper hold of the chopsticks. The wife hold toward the bottom of the chopsticks, which Vietnamese or Asian cultures would consider the wife to be a greedy eater. It's just a small pointer to pay attention to. But your video/Vlog was very nice and informative. I would trust your recommendations of the local foods. I apologize for addressing you as the Husband and the Wife in this comment. I enjoyed very much of this video. God bless you with happiness, fun and safety on your adventure in Vietnam. Thanks very much.
