Ivan Demidov picked up two goals and an assist yesterday in a 6-3 winger for SKA versus CSKA in KHL action.
Both goals were of the highlight reel variety but as you will see in this video, Demidov had several other plays that displayed his game-breaking abilities.
Demidov had recently gone through a 12-game stretch where he had picked up just one point, and little wonder considering his usage. Demidov averaged 8:57 with fourth-liners and 10 seconds per game on the power play.
In his past five games since Montreal management visited St. Petersburg, Demidov has averaged 15:40 in ice time, including more than 18 minutes in each of his last two games. He is also now in the first power-play unit, and the increased opportunity has paid off as Demidov is riding a five-game goal streak. He has six goals and three assists in those games and now sits tied for 30th in KHL scoring.
Even more impressively, Demidov leads the KHL in points per 60 (3.94) and is third overall in plus/minus at +21. Considering that he has averaged fewer than 12 minutes per game, that is a remarkable achievement.
Demidov opened the scoring in the first period with a goal that was mind-boggling. It went viral on social media as it was a skill display rarely seen by ANY hockey player. His edge work, puck skills, and finishing ability were on full display, and it was a blatant reminder that he is the most skilled player outside of the NHL.
He also notched the second goal of the game with a baseball-type swing that demonstrated his superior eye-hand coordination and awareness. He waited until the puck was below the crossbar before batting it into the net.
The most underrated part of his game, however, is his sound defensive play. Demidov rarely takes a shift off and has a high-revving motor. He forechecks and backchecks with authority and often has the puck on his stick due to his elite anticipatory skills and competitiveness. In 86 games over the past two seasons in two different leagues, he is +87 in 86 games. He easily led the KHL in plus/minus per game last season and has a wide lead in plus/minus per 60 in the KHL this season as a rookie, as he is +2.85 for every 60 minutes of action.
All of these statistics are unprecedented for a KHL rookie. He is accomplishing things no other Russian teenager has ever done at this level of hockey, and the Montreal Canadiens have a future NHL superstar in their stable who will help them win a ton of hockey games in the future.
