This video shows the installation of a switch that turns the traction control off and on for a 2003-2009 4th gen 4Runner. I am using this to snow drift and for winter autocross! I bought the switch and additional wire at AutoZone.

Use a momentary switch/button - it does the same thing, and ABS, etc. remains disabled until the engine is restarted but you won't forget to turn the switch on. Usually you need to disable ABS for a particular short trip like up an icy hill but not constantly.

So what purpose is there really for doing this? Where can it help? Just interested as I personally don’t care to drift but looking for kids to help with offroading or safety or maximizing the use of the truck
@EnigmaEngineering Жыл бұрын
The default traction control prevents acceleration, so if you are sliding, the car just actuates the brakes, essentially just slowing the car down. But, if you are trying to get the car to pitch sideways and drift/powerslide, you need to use throttle to make the car rotate or prevent it from rotating. This switch turns off the traction control, allowing the driver much more control of the vehicle in low traction situations. Even in autocrossing/racing, unless you have a modern car with advanced traction control, the VSC on older cars like the 4Runner prevents optimum speeds because it activates any time a tire is slipping, which is basically all of the time while on a track
@devincrosby15943 жыл бұрын
Way easier and cleaner to just T into the red/blue wire on the 4wd ecu under the glovebox and ground it with a switch, then you don't need to run wires to you engine bay or cut any wires.

I did this years ago. I've only disabled the VSC probably 5 times. After I did this mod my brake booster motor went it....Related? IDK, but $4000 repair if you can't do it yourself...I'm hoping it was just coincidence. I have heard where certain models have had trouble with the brake booster motors. The brake booster motor cost me $400 new and it was very difficult to replace at least for me.

@EnigmaEngineering3 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you VSC system is disabled due to some problem probably. You should get your OBD port scanned by a shop and see if they can get you some answers!
@jrennish2 жыл бұрын
Hey a bit late but some obd scanners can cause the vsc lights to come on and disable the vsc. This is due to the multi protocols being sent to the car from the scanner before it syncs to the proper protocol for 2 way communication and erases the “zero” function of the vsc so it’s shuts off. Dealer can re set the zero function ( most likely for a charge ) and there are some videos of other ways to do it.

Could you just unplug it when you want it off and plug it back in when you want it back on? Or would that damage the computer?

Yes, I think this would work. I don't think you would damage anything. I usually am driving long distances to large open spaces in blizzards, so sometimes I want the VSC on/off but I don't want to get outside the vehicle. I believe the pressure switch is related to the ABS system, which the VSC uses to control wheel spin. So disconnecting the pressure switch kicks off ABS which in turn disables the VSC system
