A large Melbourne metal band named "Whoretopsy" a few years back organised a white ribbon event where all proceeds were to be donated to the white ribbon foundation. They were expected to raise multiple thousands of dollars for charity. They are a slam metal band who write funny, fictional lyrics about people being killed in stupid ways. One person who didn't like the band on a personal level informed the White Ribbon Foundation that "a violent band who promotes violence against women" was trying to pull a PR stunt. They went as far as to contact the venue to get the band blacklisted and removed from the event. I've seen numerous bands kicked off bills because the promoter doesn't like the political opinion of one of the members. Promoters kicking bands of bills because they're "all male." I've seen bands get given headlining spots just because they have a girl in the band. Speak to the bands and they question why. They dont care about genders. They just want to play music. But apparently appearances is more important than the fucking entertainment. The amount of shit I've seen, I could go on for days. It's fucking insanity. These people think they're doing the world a favour when all they're doing is ruining peoples livelihoods and are being a detriment to society.

THANK YOU! I'm a events and tv technician and see parasitic companies like these all over the place. They are always the ones who just turn up, take money from the performers and the others who do the real work (techs, cleaners, bar staff etc etc) but are the ones who stroll around looking for things to complain about and "problems to fix" just to justify their being in the building and make it look like they are working (beyond installing all their marketing, merch, logos, banners, video contents etc). At least the health and safety officers we all hate, drive us insane but yeah you have to admit, you can see the point of their existence. These are always just hipster twats with egos who just get in our way and under our feet, make our jobs more complicated and obsess over their logo and branding rather than providing a good show and trusting professionals to do their job, providing quality entertainment while TRYING to steer their event away from anything dangerous and away from the continuously repeated cliche's we see in EVERY show that they think is their cleaver idea. These are the kind of people we suffer, that turn up and are ALL over you making sure their projected logos and adverts are PERFECT and exactly as they demand (usually with an incompatible video codec or just a shitty youtube link), are all over you making sure that each advert is played exactly when they say, the number of times they say but once the act is on stage, disappear and are never to be seen again. Not even a thanks at the end of the night as they fuck off to some coke party and leave the lowest member of staff they can find to take down their shit and leave. Bunch of aresholes the entire industry would be far better off for without their existence. /rant

It's everywhere though, there's a bottom-of-the-barrel Tool clone called COG that said at a concert "Yeah Triple Jay gave us a go when other stations wouldn't..." then proceeded to play a seven-minute chug chug of guitar noodling and dumb as dirt drumming that just existed to fit into the Triple Jay mold. Influence is a two-way street and money drives it. Fuck, the latest local Tool clone is Karnivool and their whole image is basically "Wow we went to some parties when we were twenty-somethings, lemme tell ya." Basically, if you organize things for bands you'll come up against some of the most intense, weapons-grade selfishness humans can express and you'll cope with it by fucking them all to shreds financially because anything else will be a waste of your life.
@warwickjay39073 жыл бұрын
@@xyaeiounn Mate, I'm interested to know more about where you're coming from re: Cog and Karnivool. My gut feel is neither band got successful because Richard Kingsmill said they're hot shit. They both made a name for themselves when the likes of Linkin Park / Limp Bizkit (and their imitators) and the Strokes / the Vines / The Hives etc etc were dominating rock charts, so I'm not sure they were flavor of the week. They might have succeeded over other more alternative / extreme metal acts, but thats the only sleight I can think of against them.
@xyaeiounn3 жыл бұрын
@@warwickjay3907 Has any band ever done well just because Richard Kingsmill said they were good? He's always seemed to be more of a commentator than any kind of influencer. And yeah, it's complex, since Triple Jay is stacked full of really bitchy 'cool kids'. My favourite example was one Friday on the Three Hours of Power i heard this number that sounded familiar but i couldn't place it, then they played Tool's Hooker With a Penis to show people who the previous band had been imitating. They never assassinated Cog's Paris Texas for being a shit-tier copy of Lateralus though, a good critic advances your knowledge, a bad critic poses as someone doing that but really they're just shitting on someone or shilling someone else. It's a funny complaint, having state-sponsored stations that throw a bit of fringe stuff at you is great, but Australia has always lacked good honest critics, which impoverishes the crowd who only really see what tumbles down the pipe into their lap.

Hey man, this is great. Thank you for shining a light on this subject, which is very close to my heart. I've been playing music in venues for some 40+ years, a few of those gigs happening in 'the Gong'. It makes so much sense what you're saying. Might I say, this applies to Australia as a whole. Strangled. I have a sinking feeling all the best musos are stuck doing very small private gigs or maybe a few are like me, just reverting to knowledge/learning/hibernation mode...haha, just like I was when I was 19, studying scores (Tchaikovsky at the moment!). Haven't had a gig for about a year, but can't complain because I just came off a weekly gig that lasted about a year just up until the lockdowns started. Luckily we jazz musos are used to not working (lol). So minuscule the jazz world is, yet it still suffers the same fate as the rock bands. These agents are, as you imply, nothing but parasites that do nothing but emasculate, circumcise the scene, and for good measure bring a bad attitude. In other words the secene has been cucked since the 70s - the last time you could buy a house if you were a muso. Because the infestation is complete, there is no freedom of movement, everything has been stifled - the more important spiritually something is to our race, the more it has been maligned, distorted, perverted, degraded. All you have to do to identify who's the cause of all this, is to follow the money; see who really owns the system as a whole. Hint: the exact same people who own the banks, movies, news, TV, publishing, etc (who'd have guessed?). See how they value music (or control of music to be precise) so much higher than money; money is simply a tool for them to buy creativity and mute opposition; to manufacture and promote their hollow acts. This applies to movies, journalism, everything that can be creative is white-anted out. Like the missionaries who were sent out to help 'educate' the natives, they send out HR people, feminists, shills. Yet it's not so much to promote anything as much as to demoralize us and to make us feel isolated and alone, somehow thinking it's our fault. We gotta realise this is a fight for our very soul and spirit. Thanks again
@laurieveal98783 жыл бұрын
I have dealt with this since I did my first paid gig at the age of 15. Put your prophits into venues who dare give a shit about you and get around the promo mafia. There are good people out there who love music and stand up. They all get weasled out by the polite competition of larger venue promoters who, to my knowledge, no one has met. They are ghosts. Best way I found around it is to run charity gigs for venues going under. Invest your money into businesses that give a shit.

They said they 'didn't have the budget' to pay a photographer, but would be promoting my business and making introductions to other promoters and benefactors who would like to build a roster of trustworthy event shooters. So I went along with my ticket and found that all the budget they held aside to make the event went to basically jack shit - little to no cover from the rain, place was covered in mud with nothing to cover it, the beer space was so tightly packed that it was near impossible to navigate, and no free water available at all to people. Took the photos, and some fucking great ones at that, and not only did not not share them, they didn't mention me at all and stole several images, poorly cropping out my logo. Got zero introductions either. A year later the hit me up and told me that they loved my prior work, and wanted to work with me, but 'unfortunately we don't have the budget to pay.." The if we don't like your style sound you'll be forever just stuck in plateau of just being on a last list of filling in backing bands on shit nights. If you don't bleach your clothing from head to toe and play a telecaster and sound like skeggs or identify as a neon flying fox they didn't want anything to do with you. The best bands I ever saw in my time playing that scene were never signed never got a shot at playing the bigger events like that criminally overpriced festival they call yours and owls. It truly is a monopoly that company has ties in the record labels. If I recall its about three major people who have their hands in them all and it made it next to impossible for any decent band who potentially had it but didn't wear fucking corduroy pants. As much as their promotional scheme is shit the most devastating part is the gateway keeping of potential acts. But in terms of promoting our band got fucked in regards to that lost heaps of money (not through yours and owls but another person who had their hands in that circle) but when I went through yours and owls as the "promoter" I think they did a instagram post. Who organised the posters? Me, who paid for em? Me and who fucking hung them? Me. We actually sold out that little show which i was proud of but did the promoter help with that? I personally don't reckon. The whole scene needs to be completely rebuilt from the ground up. As someone who was in a band who played in this scene for 2 years I can vouch that if your aren't in the "hipster club" which i wasn't you won't last. The music honestly felt like a by product of the situation and anyone their purely for music and wrote killer songs and didn't buy into this dumb bullshit views like alot of them have they would go through the rinse cycle and end up at the other end jaded and almost over music as a whole
@matturner68903 жыл бұрын
Same thing happened in Vancouver. It's amazing how many really popular bands could barely play or sing at all, it's just boring to watch unless you just want to delude yourself that you're relevant by 'makin' the scene!' There's still some bands who kick real ass, but it's mostly that effortless jangly new-punk wavves-clone garbage that no one should be making time for, let alone paying money. And if you play a style of rock that's not 'in' with he hip folx, good luck getting any traction at all, they do not broaden their horizons unless their friends start yet another new band.

Our band had the same thing in Brisbane! Our front man had a thought bubble that blew out to cries of homophobia WITHIN THE PUNK SCENE in 2017, which we found hilarious! Our shows got cancelled and to this day we are still locked out from various venues that are run by the the individual that twisted our words and re-edited the moment to fit his "all inclusive" narrative. All the while creating a music scene that spewed unnecessary hate and slandered their way to the very thing that they stood so strongly against. Not one person stopped to ask us what the true story was as it was all too important to virtue signal then seek the truth and publicly apologise

Anything you say would be considered “racist” when addressing the actual issues of alcohol fuelled domestic violence with children young as 6 wondering the streets at 2am at night. The whole morality of “cancel culture” undermines the actual issues.. and those issues get buried under a BLM March in Sydney by a bunch of morons who have never even experienced what it is like to live in a place like Alice Springs.
