Candid Canned: Defending Pinkie Pie

I propose yet another way of looking a Pinkie's actions. She is trying to say and do what is best for Fluttershy. Think about the Fluttershy centered episodes throughout the series. Most of them are about Fluttershy overcoming a personal fear or insecurity. In those episodes she is generally forced from her comfort zone to face the issue head on. That is exactly what Pinkie's actions do in this episode. In the first song in the entire series "Giggle at the Ghosty" , from episode 2, we learn early that part of Pinkie Pie's core beliefs is that confronting one fears is essential. So seeing as this is a deeply seeded belief for Pinkie Pie, and Fluttershy's own experiences seem to reinforce that idea, Pinkie looks pretty justified to me. In fact it may show character growth for Pinkie, as she is upsetting her friend in the short term to help her in the long term. This would probably be counter intuitive for Pinkie Pie. As a previous commenter said, if you change the tone of what Pinkie says to Fluttershy in "Filly Vanilli", she sounds much more considerate. In fact the writers in of the episode itself point this out towards the end when Rarity says the same kind of things Pinkie had, but more considerately, and it sinks in for Fluttershy. So if anything Pinkie only failed in execution. She arguably has the right approach for Fluttershy, but perhaps she is just the wrong pony to do it.

I just flat out enjoyed this. There were even a few moments where I said aloud, "YES. THANK YOU." I think the most critically important thing you said, though, is at the end: get past it and forgive her. I saw someone on Twitter say to Amy Keating Rogers that he or she couldn't like Pinkie, and she simply said, "Fluttershy still likes Pinkie." That's the fundamental truth of the show. Anyway, nice work!

I have reason to believe that Pinkamena Diane Pie has Asperger's Syndrome, I mean think about she has no filter sometimes is awkward or has trouble sitting still, seeing as she is almost always excited and does her best to make her friends smile just like in her song, and she also has slight ADD, seeing as she gets distracted easily, and as for her rambling on about things she likes that is another symptom of Asperger's, and I would know since I have it.

Emily Steele Sitting still isn't a problem the majority of people with Aspergers; rambling on about things that she specifically likes is a very poorly described way of actually explaining that spectrum of people with this problem. In almost all sources, including Wikipedia, the very first sentence states "significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication". To simplify this, the majority of those with Aspergers have a hard time interacting or talking to others, and they are very poor with their nonverbal ques, such as body language and emotions. Understanding just this, it immediately disproves Pinkie for having Aspergers, as she is very expressive of her emotions and body language, and she is very much capable of striking a conversation with others and holding it even when the opposite member wants to let it go. As for rambling on about things one likes being a 'symptom' is very vague for what it actually is. Due to being uncomfortable around others, and not knowing their interests and likes (or just not having interest in those likes), people tend to move the subjects back towards something they are more familiar with because talking about something you know makes you feel more comfortable. This is why it's common to see people with Aspergers talking on about something they like because they don't like the other topics. Reserved characters prefer to stay with things they like rather than learning about things that are not in their list of interests, which is why they as very little questions about things they don't know. I don't see how having no filter supports your claim (even though she does have a filter) as through the many lengths of my research haven't told me anything about such problems. Awkwardness is often, in your case, misdirected for what most sources are trying to explain. When they refer to a 'regular' person as awkward, they mean that they are hard to talk to. When they say someone with Aspergers is awkward, they mean it is difficult to talk to them and vice versa. ADD and ADHD is very picky about the people that actually have it. As majority rules, those with ADD or ADHD have a nearly impossible time focusing on a task without being easily distracted by something else, and it's even harder for them to get back into focus on the primary task. This is just a generalization of what they mean. From this, you can tell Pinkie is not this way, thanks to a few episodes. In Pinkie Pride, specifically the beginning with all the singing, Pinkie has continued to paint despite all the noises going on around her. This would have sent someone with ADHD on a frenzy (using personal experience as I knew someone that did this) because they cannot filter out all these distractions making it impossible for them to focus. For Pinkie Pie, she continued to paint without stopping and none of their noises or singing halted her from her primary task: making a banner. Another episode, and being my favorite for disproving this theory, is Too Many Pinkies. When all the Pinkie's are forced to stare at wet-painted wall, it was to test Pinkie if she was able to discipline herself enough with a non-entertaining task better than the clones that wanted to have nonstop fun. This very thing is an impossible task for someone with ADHD. Sitting in one spot, staring at one thing in one direction is torturous for ADHD, and it only takes a distraction within very little time to deter their attention. For example, if you were to just stare at a clock for 15 minutes, you will notice that time is slowing down from your perspective. The hands will move slowly and this simple 15 minutes would feel like an hour. People with ADHD looking at this makes it feel likes hours upon hours just to see the hand reach one minute. From what we have seen in that episode, Pinkie is capable of focusing on a specific task, and her desires fuel this focus making it impossible to break her gaze. Despite the many times we may see Pinkie jumping around and following balloons fly off into the sky, Pinkie does have the capabilities of filtering out unwanted distractions when necessary; she just chooses not to do it because she likes the fun of life. If she had ADHD, it would be a neck sore getting to do the simplest of tasks from her, such as babysitting. Getting them back into focus is even harder, but if you simply call Pinkie's name, she will snap back into focus. This is why the theory of Pinkie Pie having ADHD and Aspergers is not logically sound; the majority of her personality and actions performed outweigh the very common traits found in typical patients.

in the second instant of pinkie pie getting 'lost in her thoughts' as CC put it, its not so much what she says as much as it is the tone and the volume in which she is saying it, seriously if you say that speech at a normal calm volume and with a little more empathy it would come across differently. i think pinkie pies problem is that she can't always control the way she says things, because she doesn't always hear what her voice is doing as she speaking. now i know this might make you think 'how can she not hear how she is talking', but hear (or i guess read) me out. some people do have trouble controlling the way they vocalise things, i don't know if its because we hear our own voice differently to others because of how the sound travels or what, but i do know its not completely uncommon for someone to say something meaning one thing but sound like they're meaning something else. this is something i can personally empathise with as growing up there were a number of occasions where i got into trouble for the way i spoke to my parents, even tho i had no intention of sounding the way they were telling me i sounded (normally moody or angry). at the time i didn't understand why i was being taken so easily out of context and its something i still struggle with occasionally as an adult, to the point where i'll get paranoid i've sounded a certain way without meaning too and will apologise needlessly. in my experience this is a problem you only learn to cope with by observing the reactions of others and pinkie recognising she's done something wrong shows she's aware (probably from things her friends and/or family have said) she has some kind of problem with the way she says certain things even if she doesn't specifically know what that problem is (whether getting caught up in a train of thoughts as CC suggests, or lack of vocal control as i've suggested). in all honesty when i watched those pinkie pie scenes for the first time i recognised that part of myself that can get vocally carried away or off track. (i'm not counting the 'you kinda sounded like a dude' line as that is just pinkie's character). i also agree with all the points CC made in this video and i'm glad to finally come across a reviewer who isn't totally down on pinkie for her actions or just ignores her in this ep for not wanting to open a can of worms.

But that argument would have a LOT more weight if it didn't take Rarity *smacking Pinkie's nose with a newspaper* to make her see she was acting inappropriately. Or if, seeing that she did wrong, I could remember Pinkie showing even a shred of guilt or remorse beyond "oww, you hit me and that hurt". Or if she hadn't done the exact same thing (even with Fluttershy) enough times for even the most socially oblivious pony who doesn't have some form of learning disorder (Not to disparrage those that have such, I just used them academically for an example of someone who has a legitimate "can't help it" excuse) to start thinking "Hey, maybe I should NOT vocalise everything that bounces to the top of my brain at the first possible opportunity"

LunaLover231 It's true that she does it repeatedly, but in a situation like that, filtering your thoughts usually doesn't come to mind ^^' It's like if you have a fight with your friend. Sometimes you would say things you didn't mean or want to say, but you were running on adrenaline and it just came out. Within that point of time, you didn't really think about what you were saying, you just wanted to stress your thoughts for that person to understand. I think, what happened here, is that Pinkie was running on adrenaline and she said things she didn't mean to. Besides the first case (probably due to not realizing what she had said, just knowing she had said something) Pinkie tried to take back her words like by saying "Wait, didn't I say she was great? YOU WERE GREAT!!" Or "No offense, but you kinda sounded like a dude... A GREAT SOUNDING DUDE!!" I believe she never intentionally meant to hurt Fluttershy, it just kinda happened, and she regretted it afterwards ^^' But yeah, doesn't excuse her actions, they were still wrong, I just think she didn't realize she had said it until she couldn't take it back.

I, personally, have never watched an episode of MLP: FiM but I have watched many videos here on YT on the matter, and even watch the original MLP when I was young (yes, I'm THAT old). And I agree with you. PP is NOT at fault for her lapse in personality. Everyone has those moments when they forget what they are saying and to whom. I myself do that quite often, even when the person I am talking to is myself. It's just a mental lapse in contextual judgement.

cc you make some good points in this and pinkie (i think) has ADHD (i have this too and i can be just like pinkie) and it explains why she doesn't realize how in depth she get's in her thoughts and she was being herself cuz she either get's really off topic or she get into it way to much and over blows it.... and it could be a bit mean spirited if it were her doing it on purpose but she isn't so she just means well and pinkie is one of my fav chars in mlp so this might be a bit biased how i think of her

Robyn smith ADHD = "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder". A condition where a person has huge difficulty, or is sometimes completely unable to focus on a single train of thought or activity for more than a few minutes or seconds at a time unless it's managed by medication. Characterised by excessive fidgeting when compelled to sit still, and being incredibly easily distracted. So... Pinkie Pie in spades xD though I don't think ADHD suffers are usually all that happy-go-lucky - in fact I think if they're aware of it, it's incredibly frustrating and upsetting. The almost-annoyingly happy (I said almost, please don't kill me!) attitude is just Pinkie :D

I actually think Pinkie is smarter than people think. In regards to the episode, I see what you mean. Pinkie wasn't being malicious in her behaviour she was just letting herself say whatever was in her head at the time and I can relate to that. However, I think that the writers should have just let Fluttershy's own fears cause her to break down rather than her friend. We all know she is capable of letting irrational fears control her. Actually this seems to be leading up to something. If you watch interactions between Pinkie and Flutters it seems that they don't tend to get along much. For instance, Fluttershy got irritated rather quickly at Pinkie's behaviour in Griffon the Brush-Off. And in Castle Sweet Castle, she was really passive agressive towards Pinkie when her birds started popping the balloons. I would really like it if this was leading up to an episode that focuses on those two.

a friend of mine who watches this show says i'm like pinkie and when the show first started, i didn't see much of myself in her but as the show continued, I started seeing more and more of myself in Pinkie, especially in this episode.....I do have a tendency to sometimes not watch what I'm saying and say something that hurts someone and when I realize that, I apologize immediately. I tend to go off on tangents without realizing it, so I understand why Pinkie does and says a lot of things she does.

One of the theories I've seen written about pinkie pie is that she is a non-euclidian entity, older then time itself, and commonality has no effect on unless she wants it to, and that she takes the form of a pink party pony because she feeds on the emotion of happiness which is why she is always working to make sure ponies are happy, it's her source of food and power. This also would explain why she is capable of doing things that she is able to, and why at times she acts the way she does.

I agree with you on the first instance. The face Pinkie made is a face myself and many others i know make when we get a rather dark idea, and though what she said wasn't very dark to most, it probably is in Ponyville, a rather quiet town. And in all honesty, if you enjoy dark things, or have a dark mind, it's hard to pull yourself out of tangents if they have something to do with it.

I was mad at the writing itself. And it may have been in character a bit. But I think it was played a bit too far. Actually I just realised when writing this. Why did nopony stop Pinkie before it got too bad? I mean surely they would have realised that Pinkie was going too far, especially for talking to Fluttershy. I just realised that. But I don't think it was anypony's fault. I think it was just slightly exaggerating Pinkie's personality (even if she does do things like this I think she wouldn't go as far as to make Fluttershy cry that much)

Nicely doen again! Third post on your vids today sheesh lol! But in agreement with you on this one. Since I tend to try to relate myself to all the characters of the show, I tend to think how Pinkie Pie was in Filli Vanilli, was just a bit blunt on the border of OCD blunt, like she can be as you kinda stated on other things, like making some else smile when they clearly dont want her around, or when shes planning a party. She does just lose herself from time to time which can happen with me quite often when it comes to my work or a negative thought. Of course I was shouting at her on this episode "ok Pinkie thats enough...wait...pinkie...pinkie! PINKIE!!!" I lost her... lol! But it was still entertaing for me to watch her, because her mistakes tend to help me to remind myself to be more observent of my actions.

Pinkie is impulsive which means she reacts purely on whims and emotions without thinking before she speaks or acts, because she lacks self control and it often gets her into trouble. I for one do agree it could also be argued that she simply over did it cause she was use to the old Fluttershy and is having trouble gaging how quickly she's changing but yeah mostly i think she didn't know what she was really doing as her own thoughts got in the way,kind of how she acted in Luna eclipsed unintentionally sabotaging Luna's attempts to bond with everyone. yet in both these cases she dose do something that ends up helping. giving Twilight the solution and defeating Big mac in the turkey call. so in both of these cases she was an unintentional antagonist with good intentions and one the episodes couldn't have properly wrapped up without.

Pinkie Pie is very complicated as a character, and though i didn't exactly like watching her do this to fluttershy, i do have to agree that it wasn't out of character .The only thing that seemed out of character to me is she may not be able to read the room to well usually. Pinkie Pie was never one of my favorite characters, I`ve never liked the oblivious hyper type, until lately. Now Pinkie`s my fave, mainly because I can relate to her, especially in how she acted in Filli Vanilli, sometimes I end up saying things that are really harsh, rude, or just down right cruel. Pinkie Pie does have a very different filter, alright. Without it, she would no longer be Pinkie Pie in the first place. She filter out what is in the way at any given moment, even if it is herself, or the here and now. Sometimes the aim is hitting the red balloon(red hering), or the future, past or what ever is out there.

She's not my favorite character but I loved the pandemonium of a million pinkies from that magic body of water. she still is a major part of the story and would be missed if not in a episode. Didn't realize how much till this video. pinkie reminds me of people i know who have no filter or her mouth gets ahead of her thinking. I think she's one of the few characters who actually survived the seasons and change in style on my little pony. thier is a reason for that.

I have to agree with cream. I admit that when I first saw filli vanilli I called police's outburst out of character. My dad however pointed out how that was in character by framing similarly to when I fought with my friend. lol pinkie was just being pinkie, hasn't anyone noticed when it comes to explaining the worst case scenario her train of thought runs away with her (Think exploding twice, or evil enchantress, or even her own breakdown. I believe that Pinkie truly was trying to help, let me explain. In my headcanon the Pinkie Pie we know is not the original Pinkemena, but instead is her Shadow or repressed subconscious. Pinkie wanted to help Fluttershy but as a creature composed entirely of instinct, desire, and repressed thoughts and feelings, she did so the only way that made sense to her. She used what she knew of Fluttershy's fears and confronted her with them, using those fears and insecurities to tear down the facade of safety that Fluttershy had built around herself to try to get Flutters to realise that she needs to accept her fears as just another part of herself, as denying those fears would only make them stronger until they would eventually consume Fluttershy from the inside out until only her own Shadow remains.

I'm picking up symptoms of autism and ADHD in Pinkie's character, based on her occasional hyperfixation, vocalization of her random thoughts and her trouble reading social cues. As an autistic person with ADHD, I have these character traits too.

I didn't know that there were so many accusations against Pinkie Pie. Great analysis and thank you for defending her. I just thought she was just laying out the worst case scenario that probably wouldn't happen. Fluttershy is amazingly talented. She knows this. Behind the curtains she was performing for every event.

As a huge offender of this, I forgave her not long afterwards, and even saw what she was doing, as it was happening... Because I've unwittingly set someone off by saying the wrong things, because I didn't have a very good filter between my mouth and mind... Weither it was a stranger, a friend, or even family, I tend to have good intentions. I never mean to hurt them, even if sometimes act a selfish, hostile, or standoffish... I've apollogized time and again for my insensitive behavior, and can only hope that they'll one day forgive me. Although, I can understand if they don't. Either way, it was a great video; I loved it. You know, your explanation is very good! But I often looked at the ponies symbolically. And in this episode I always though of Fluttershy as the talent, Rarity as the desire to express yourself and Pinkie as that little nervous voice inside that can run out of control if you let it talk for to long. This also fits with her character in the way you explained above. She means well but if she gets on a roll her/your fantasies go wild and speak the first things that come to mind without even noticing. And in the case of someone with stage fright these thought go into the worst directions possible. This symbolism get's especially noticeable at the end where she speaks these thoughts more frequently. Just like Pinkie looked so regretful, you suddenly realize that you let your thoughts go wild but it's to late to get out of it on your own. And at the end where Pinkie tries to jump Fluttershy and Twilight pulls her back this might symbolize how friend can praise and encourage you and keep the little voices in check before you start thinking badly of yourself. But then again, I'm all about theories and symbolism, don't mind me!

I Think you're forgetting the most important thing CC. I mean... as I one shot about 20 of your vidéos, I figured out that the 30th episode "Luna Eclipsed" seems to be your favorite one. And for me, the answer is juste... right here. Pinkie juste love to be scared. It's also the case with Zecora. She even right a song about it. She is amused by scary things, she just laught at it (as said in the 2 firt episodes) and she try to make every pony amused too. Of course, she should have thought Fluttershy was not the kind of person who like to be scared, but as I know, she is the most affraid pony Pinkie knows, and I don't think she ever said to Pinkie that she don't like those moments of fear. As she seems to enjoy this life, I think it's normal in Pinkie point of view to think Fluttershy juste love to be scared. And for me, that explain this "joke" Pinkie was trying, to make her friend happy. Then she is asked by Rarety to stop being ridiculous, and she deffend herself by saying she is so good at it. For me, that confirmes she was only trying to make Flutter laught. And after all, when Flutter start crying, she realised that she was gone too far. That the nightmare she was drawing to her friend, was actually a real one. Which is obviously not fun. And after that, she tried to make jokes that made things even worse. But she was truly trying... This is not a critical, just my own opinion and point of view in this topic, and I agree with your arguments. I just... needed to point a finger on this thought I had while watching this. As for my thoughts on Pinkie this episode. I can't lie, it's still pretty jarring for me and just doesn't feel like Pinkie Pie. I think one of the main reasons for this is because it was so shortly after one of Pinkie's best outings, Pinkie Pride, which while showing her hyperactive and random nature, and how, indeed she can loose sight of the bigger picture, she never stretches it too far. The minute she realises Rainbow isn't having a good birthday, she ended the goof off and was full of apologises. Here, it went on far to long. From the pony who knew Fluttershy was too sensitive for pranks it Griffon the Brush Off, to one who can't seem to keep her mind to that same level of awareness and focus doesn't fully sit. That said, I did still find it a compelling view point.

Didn't in Griffon the Brush Off, Pinkie told Rainbow Dash that they shouldn't prank Fluttershy cause she's too sensitive? She was very adamant about that. I can understand it happening once out of sheer excitement but when you do it two or three times, it can make it hard for others to take it in; especially when there's an episode showing that she doesn't like the idea of doing anything to make Fluttershy cry all together.

Luna Eclipsed would've been a better example of Pinkie being thoughtless. I personally can't say for sure, since we have an episode like that, but in Griffon the Brush-Off she specifically knows not to prank Fluttershy since she knows she's so sensitive. I kind of interpret Pinkie as less overzealous/dense as episodes like Luna Eclipsed and Filli Vanilli make her out to be, but that's just me.
