She is my favorite princess for a few reasons: 1. I love her design. All of those tones of blue are just a pleasure to my eyes, and therefore, I love drawing her. 2. She is very regal, but at the same time doesn't think she's above everyone. 3. She has an amazing back story to which many people, including myself can relate. 4. She is very mysterious and I personally adore characters like that. 5. I just love the night, and the concept of dreamwalking.

So what I'm saying is that you need some sort of amulet/gem thing to change him back, increased with the alicorn magic. It could be possible in a way, but no gem can do that. "Like Fluttershy did in "Keep Calm and Flutter On" " Ok so Fluttershy is mutual and is naturally a kind mare. Discord is fond of her because the other 5 don't trust him yet, so that's why. And if Fluttershy didn't like Discord in the first place, there was no way you can turn them into a better human being.

Luna is adorable and an amazing pony in general. I think what makes her a fan favorite, though, is how she responds to the other princesses and other ponies in general. For example, how she's not afraid to speak out against her sister, even if Celestia always has the last word. She so clearly loves the ponies of Equestria, and I think she's the easiest princess to talk to when it comes down to it because Luna is openly flawed, but also kind. You could say she's a balanced combination of the other three alicorn princesses: flawed yet friendly like Twilight, regal yet kind like Celestia, and responsible yet loving like Cadence.

Celestia's mistake has been revealed. Sunset shimmer. Think about this. Twilight could have been the betrayer as well as Sunset Shimmer could have been the element of magic too. If Sunset Shimmer didn't go to the human world Celestia most likely not notice her mistake starting to build in Twilight. Sunset is Celestia's mistake. without Sunset's betrayal there would be no need for the search which would mean no Twilight going to ponyville which means no Alicorn Twilight. I have always thought it can't be by conquincadent (the word that means can't be by chance) that twilight just so happened to read that book. Maybe she's very popular because when we first saw the ponies, we knew what they were like, what they weren't like, ect. But when we first say Luna, we acually had a few questions, which were later answered in later episodes. We still don't know EVERYTHING about Luna, unlike Cadence or Celestia. Twilight might not be so popular because her transformation, was a...little...rushed..And many people just wasn't ready for this. I'm still not used to Twilight being an alicorn! There IS a few questions we have about Twilight, but not "big" ones. Also how Luna looks, her coat color, her mane, her.... voice...They help form who she is, and how people think about her. #LUNAHASBESTSINGINGVOICE! :3 Also, Luna is the ONLY alicorn that we know of that used to be a villain. I just think she is way more relatable. No i haven't spent a thousand years on the moon but the feeling of being alone is something that we all feel at some point in our lives. Even Rainbow says "i hate being alone..." In one episode, i forgot what one but i know she does say it. Also i think the fact that no one sees the glory of the night. Meaning no one truly sees how great you are or how great your personality is. Making Luna get depressed. She still barely has any friends is the show. When the two princesses were missing Twilight only seemed to care about Celestia. When they returned, who did she run to to hug? Celestia. When it shows the hug from a different view it shows Luna hugging her to. But! I think that Luna was the one who hugged Twilight. I feel the Twilight only hugged Celestia. Off topic a bit but of all of this Luna is way more relatable in my eyes.

The way why i prefer Princess Luna/Nightmare Moon/Nyx (so much characters:D) is the reason for which I am most likable Luna is its tragic past that I associate with my bad past. when I was young (15 years old), my father died of a heart attack, and then I went to live with my mother in northern Germany. And let's say my life with her was just sad. except insults me that she brings, it also brings home the people with whom I had trouble.When I became an adult I enlisted in the army. From here they sent us probably not the most pleasant place on the moment, Afghanistan...Then I was in the ISAF Forces (International army) . What I saw there every time I was shocked. I especially remember the time when we were in the village of Samira. It was later time, and I could not see anything within a radius of 2 meters. We had a job to ensure the safety of civilians of the village. but when we arrived there was a deathly silence and the stench that was a lump in my throat. We were looking for at least someone who could tell us what happened. I looked into the house like a shed from which could be heard children's voices and cry.what I saw there were no words to describe. three children, one girl and two boys of five years, they sat next to the corpses of people. Then I was filled with anger and sadness at the same time. As I learned later those civilians was killed by terrorists because they was friends to us or something like that. at 23, I was discharged from Afghanistan because of the injury of the right shoulder by shrapnel. But wounds and experiences from Afghan sometimes "opening".I'm probably a little distracted from the topic of discussion, right? =) Perhaps I'm thinking from my own experience about Princess Luna, so don't blame me for my reason. If i would choose between another ponies and Luna i will choose her. I think any character in the art that has passed through the hell, can be the most described character. The same I can't say about the other ponies in Equestria. Princess Luna was sent to prison for 1,000 YEARS on the moon. 1,000 years! Even my 5 years on the war was sick. My life has taught me to seek justice for acts of this kind. What did Celestia can not be called ,,act of mercy". If saving her own skin, I believe it.I think in this video surely noticed popularity of Princess Luna. each of us sees his Luna. I see Princess Luna as character with strong spiritually and physically quality. She uses her power to help the weak ponies. If these two characteristics do not describe her well then I have nothing to add ;)

I really like your perspective on this. Luna is given just enough characterization and backstory that the fans have something to work with, but the show's minimal usage of her has left her almost like a blank slate and gives fans an opportunity to project their own ideas, thoughts, and traits into her. It's very similar to Derpy Whooves' rise to fame, actually.

Mainly, her motif related to darkness and lunar imagery is what makes her so popular, as it gives her a lovecraftian aura evoking mystery and terror. Watching demonic or dark characters gives an enormous cathartic feeling, it relieves the tension we have due to inhibitions that bind us from doing the things that are wrong, something that dark creatures such as demons don't have. It's the same reason why many villains and anti-heroes are so popular. They get to do the cool stuff we want to do but can't due to the rules that bind us.

Personally, I can see why the people like Luna but, I don't like her. You heard me. I'm not trolling it's my honest opinion. You don't have to agree with me. All I ask is you don't screech and yell at me like a crazed monkey for having an opinion you don't like. The reason I don't like her is because, she's so overrated. Luna just kinda showed up in the premiere, said two or three lines, then wasn't seen again til season 2. The whole NLR vs SE thing cropped up around then, due to all the fans speculating and filling in gaps. While you seem to think that's generally A-okay, I generally don't look so kindly on it. Nothing wrong with fans having their own interpretations, but it's not canon. It's not those things that are to be analyzed. However, it was indeed those things about Luna that made her appealing. Celestia seems to be a character beloved by some, and I guess admired. But she doesn't have much in the way of verisimilitude. People can more relate to a sister struggling with issues than a supposed paragon of all that is good and just in the pony world. Granted, we know more about Celestia now. But back then nobody did, it wasn't written. All we knew was that she banished Luna, Luna returned and apologized and everything was hunky dory again. Luna Eclipsed brought her down to earth and had her be influenced by the main characters. That is putting her character on a level Celestia has never been on. The audience was able to empathize with Luna in that circumstance in a way that they never have for Celestia or Cadance. That's a really big deal. And arguably, Celestia _can't_ be put on that level, because that's not the role she fills in the narrative. In a nutshell, that's why Luna is more popular. She's gone places Celestia or Cadance haven't.

Before I start NO ONE FIGHT ME! I do not like Luna by numrous reasons like how many fanfics about her. That what kinda puts her off for me how she is the so call best princess at video games. 1 there are no video games in mlp and 2 if it is any one it would most likely be Cadence since she dated Shining armor as a teen of course they would play video games together (Ps Im not playing favorites) and Luna was stuck on the moon for so long she would forget how or they wouldn't be created then. Another reason is that she has no real purpose. Celestia raises the sun and can do the moon and possibly do much more, also she has a kingdom Canterlot and watch every other city. Cadence has the Crystal empire and is the crystal princess and Twilight is the princess of friendship and Season 5 she owns a city much like the crystal empire but with friendship. I do not like a princess that is really not needed and yes she can go into filly's dreams but no der Celestia could and possibly the others over many many practice. And I you have red the mlp Luna Micro comic Luna is really mean which puts her off the charts for me since why really have a mean princess. There hasn't been any substantial backstory for Luna other than the flashbacks at the beginning of season 4, also the fact of Luna's character is almost under developed in a way that there is a shroud of mystery about this Princess of the night. Those are just my thoughts and opinions on the matter

I personally LOVE Luna because she has a certain depth to her that no one else is allowed. She is not as up beat or spirited and had real issues, especially someone, or some pony, in her power. She has grown tremendously and still maintains her refreshingly mellowed persona. Besides, her powers are so cool!

Luna is my favorite because... -She has an interesting backstory I and a lot of other people can relate to. -She helps other pony's with there problems/feelings by communicating through their dreams. -She is very mysterious and at the same time very clear. -I love her design. -She is regal, but she doesn't act like she is above all other pony's. -When I feel alone or lost I always watch the moon (and stars), it gives me hope and make me feel better. What I like about Luna is that she's an underdog that can rise to the occasion if she is needed don't she's also very kind and goes where she's needed. Unlike Celestia she doesn't pick a favorite( Twilight Sparkle and Cadence). Luna loves everyone and that's why she is my favorite princess in MLP

Given the age groups this show appeals to, I think it makes sense that they would be drawn to the character that pretty much embodies night. Children want to stay up late, the older people do, the night has a reputation for when interesting and fun things happen. "Movie day" doesn't have the same ring to it as a "movie night," then there are sleepover birthday parties and the like.

There's also a possibility that night owls are drawn to Luna. It's one of the reasons I was. Because I prefer to be awake through the night, I'm drawn more towards the Princess of the night and I doubt I'm alone in that. Of course the other reasons come into play as well but that was one of my initial ones.

She may look clod and dark but she is actually very kind, she is just to shy to show it, which I think makes her very interesting, because it remains me that you can't just judge people for their looks. Another reason I find sometimes helps, she's a great example of a villain turned good guy. I actually find there's a bit of a trend there in the mlp fandom. Discord for instance, everyone loves Discord. They may not love him for THAT specific reason, but it helps his case. They have regrets like us. They've made huge mistakes like us. That's what contributes to Luna, and Discords popularity, at least how I see it.

I can relate to Luna because of her relation with Luna and her backstory, she has an older sibling who has more authority and power (assuming in power) everyone loved what she did, but not as much of what Luna did, she felt unneeded and lesser, her great deeds overshadowed by Celestia. I have an older sibling as well, he has more strength and authority than me, e is more appreciated than I am and I feel left out and overshadowed. I also enjoy the night because it's cool and less blinding. So I can relate to her in that way best.

I do agree with your points. To me Luna is Best Princess because of how many angles with seen of her as well as all the stuff the fandom made to fill the gaps. However at the same time I'm a huuge Candance fan (so much I can say she's my personal favorite while Luna is the best), however for completely different reasons. While most people like her with the "Perfect Pink Princess" moniker, I say that with the amount of what we've seen of her, it's really no different if we'd only seen others by such a narrow scome; Twilight - the nerd, Rainbow- the femjock, Rarity - the southern belle etc.. What made me like Cadance are the little things. I find her to be like a model of someone who's still pretty young, but learned how to be a responsible adult, but not yet like let's say Celestia or other "adult adults".

I think Luna is popular because viewers can relate to how she feels. For example, when Luna felt like people loved her sister more than her, she felt anger and sadness, therefore turning into nightmare moon. No one can't not feel pain, physically or emotionally like Celestial or Cadence. That is why people like Luna, because of her past and how she's felt.

I think lots of people like Luna because she is easy to identify with, her being misunderstood. As for why I personally love Luna, well, a major thing that first drew me to her character was, Lauren Faust said that Luna was meant for younger siblings who feel like they are living in the shadows of others, and that is something I can really relate to. There are many other reasons why I love Luna of course. Night time is my favourite time of day, because the night sky is beautiful and peaceful. Luna is full of mystery. Sure we know the basics of Luna turning into NMM and being banished, but we don't really know her that well as a character. I suppose this also counts as a flaw she has. There's also Luna's power that we now know she can walk in others dreams and rid them of their nightmares, and helping ponies come to terms with their fears in the waking world. Luna's a reminder for me to face my fears and be brave.

She hated herself so much that she created a monster that made her have nightmares every night! She was punishing herself! Check near the end of the episode she starts crying she hates herself so bad!

there are a lot of reasons why Luna is so popular. but one reason that onothr horse famous brony brought up a little while ago. in a lot of things, Luna would be the realistic hero Celestia and Qadence would most likely be the ones that would offer the hero guidance. Like the Harry Potter to Dumbledore. And Twilight would be the smart sidekick, or something.

I like Luna because of her design but I also like the fact that she isn't like the other ponies, all lovey Dovey and positive. She actually has feelings someone should actually have. The mane six and the other princesses are all " friendship is magic, let's work together, group hug etc. but Luna gets angry in an angry manner instead of taking deep breaths and calming down she actually yells and even transform. it's like Luna is alive somewhere instead of a cartoon.

A rule of thumb for a lot of people is the night is cooler plus people just like darker things I guess so that's a thing people could be attracted to luna more and then there is what I call the rule of the reformed. Characters who started evil and later became good are just the most popular in tons of shows and other forms of media. Discord, Vegeta, Piccolo, The Arbiter they all started as bad guys until they were defeated and then became good guys and for whatever reason people are attracted to this

A lot of Luna's popularity stems from the sheer amount of emotional baggage her backstory carries. Even before Luna Eclipsed, the various coping mechanisms people came up with for the interesting combination of a thousand year time displacement coupled with crushing guilt were extremely interesting. Once Luna Eclipsed effectively one-upped the fandom in terms of how Luna was coping and adjusting, her popularity likewise skyrocketed due to the depth it gave her. Deep characters have layers, and Luna Eclipsed went and peeled away those layers one at a time in the space of one episode.

I agree with what you stated but I have one thing to add. I think one of the reasons I love Luna as a Charitor is becase she was bad and became good, was looked on as bad but was nice. What I just stated may have gone with the sad background ideal you stated. As far back into my childhood as I can remember, ( four I think ) and steel today, I have loved charitors that seamed bad or were bad and turned out good. I don't know if others like her for this characteristic but I do. :)

Luna stand in a sweet spot between the main cast and the background ponies. The Mane Six and CMC have had their character traits well defined, while the background ponies were practically blank slates that could be portrayed any way the fans wanted. Luna has had a few of her traits shown, but there is still plenty of room left for fans to get creative. Just my thoughts.

She has in all senses of the term a great plot to work with, in that she not only is her character beautiful as too is she, so too is there that darker element. She has that air of mystery while being able to have fun. She can express herself very well, with a far range of things to express. She has that tragic past that makes you care in that it is not just something contrived but one that can be belived & related with, that of being suppressed oppressed or otherwise ignored. To feel like no one cares is a thing, but if it is for a reason you have to live with all the time having it so constantly in your face yet nothing is being done to help? Yeah... So overall, Luna is the everypony's Princess in every sense in she is diverse, there is that slight element of mystery & darkness to intrigue, and of a beauty all her own to match. She is very much the pony everypony should know, but just as much would _want_ to know. >_

Lulu is so popular because she represents the moon, is the younger sister - a shadow even, you can can say, to Celestia , and , maybe even a little "underdog" like. People tend to favor the underdog, especially younger people because they have a short tension span, they think "UGH so and so always wins, this is so boring", while if the underdog wins they have a boastful feeling , kinda like if a bully says something that doubts your abilities , you would say " Well I did this and beast so and so". The younger viewers can get excited, and also usually younger viewers have older siblings and dislike them because they are self-centered and would like the younger sister, Luna, because they can relate to them. I love Luna partly because of my headcanon about her. I see her as someone who is just as loyal to her subjects and kingdom as Celestia, but doesn't consider herself bound by the same standards Celestia holds herself to. While she's not as powerful as Celestia, she is willing to go further to defeat a villain, even killing them if absolutely necessary. She is more of an antihero than a hero. However, I also think she has a soft spot for her sister, so protecting Celestia will always be her first priority in a fight. But I think after her time as nightmare moon, she is realizing that she can protect equestria without having to go so far as murder, and is slowly becoming more of a hero than an antihero. But that's just my thoughts. If anyone here has other headcanons, I'd love to hear them :P

I think there are a few things that push her popularity. you do have some good points but those are not quite the ones i had in mind. the first reason she got her popularity is she was originally introduced to us in the first couple episodes fans root for her. but thats not the main reason. The number one reason is I think fans relate to Luna on some level. whether its Feeling under aprishiated for what they do, not being able to get out of the shadow of a sibling, class mate or co worker, people fearing you for being different, feeling your belong in a different time of history. things like that. I am a major Luna fan myself and for me i was drawn to her cause i understood somewhat of how she felt. growing up i was always the odd one out both in school and with my family cause i wasn't exactly what they thought a girl should be. One of the things that drew me was that shes dark but not necessarily full out evil.
