On my business card, under my name, I have the words "Master Candle Maker." No one certified me. In fact, I don't know if such a certification is available. I do it because it makes me feel better about myself. I agree with your statement to not ever say that you are "Just a..." I don't do it out of arrogance or conceit. I do it because I've been through 3 years of goofs and mistakes and I've conquered them. That's what makes someone a master.

You are the first person to break down the fragrance load percentages in a way that doesn't make my head hurt.

Yep... It's basicly moving the . To the left one time. So it you got 34oz wax and you want 10% you need 3.4oz of fregrance. But if it's above or below 10% I break out my calculator. Lmao

Oh, and I wanted to share another way to see what colour your candle will be once it cools. Just put a few spoons in the freezer and then once they are really cold, dip one into your colored candle wax. It may be surprisingly lighter in shade than you'd like. You can then add more colour to the melted wax and do the spoon test again. Voila! Love your videos.

You did a great job of explaining things in your video! I like how you showed the volume difference in the bottles. I've seen a lot of videos that explain to always weigh your Ingredients, but never show the reason why, like you did. Also, you did a good job at explaining the Wax/Fragrance/Total Formula! I had this exact same debate with another Candle Maker in a Candle Making Group I was in, on a Facebook Group. She kept posting to New Candle Makers saying to Subtract the Fragrance Oil Total, from the amount of Wax used (Example: Candle Jar can hold 16 oz and you wanted 10% Fragrance (1.6 oz), to subtract 16 (Total) - 1.6 (Fragrance Oil) =14.4 (amount of Wax used)). I kept trying to explain to her, that her Method was fine, if your Wax is able to hold more than 10%. But if 10% is your Max Limit for your Wax, that you would be going over the Max Fragrance Load for the Wax (it would turn into 11.1% from the above Example). She kept insisting that the Fragrance Percentage isn't added the the Total of the Wax, that it was Subtracted. She would try and say that if she took a Pizza, and cut it up into 10 Slices, and 1 Slice represented the Fragrance Oil (10%), while the others Represented the Wax, that she would still have 10 Slices, and that you don't add another Slice to it. I told her that her Example was the exact definition of Measuring by Volume, not by Weight. I could never get through to her. And me and several others, constantly had to explain to other New Candle Makers why her Formula was incorrect.

You don't need to buy some equipment just because they say it's for candle making.). Although I am new to candle making , I've been cooking for many years and I eyeball almost everything I make! My cousin doesn't sell candles, but, she makes them as gifts for many many people. She just warms water, in her electric roasting pan, and sets the candles in it for a bit to get rid of frost. Works on the same principle, I think, but, she can do several at a time, and doesn't have to work so hard at it. Obviously that wouldn't work if you have labels on the jar like you do for retail. But, for gifters or people making them for home use it would work.

Thanks so much this was very helpful. I usually like quick videos with little lists and quick tips, but you have a very calm & easy way of explaining things.... so I stuck around and I’m so happy I did bc I really learned so much. Thanks Officer Candlemaker (no disrespect intended- I think that’s SOO cool!). I’ve been making candles for fun over a year and have been toying around with deciding if I want to add them to my Etsy store (hence trying to find out how to make them as professional as possible).... and I have a weirdly specific question for you or anyone who knows (who *actually* knows, please- not trying to be rude, but I mean, I can make an educated guess myself lol)... When you package/list a candle and you refer to ounces- say it’s an 8oz jar. Obviously you’re not filling it up all the way, so it’s less than 8oz wax (or even if not by much, it’s still not exactly 8oz of “candle” lol). SO what I’m getting at is- when you put the oz on the label and listing- do you refer to the size of the jar in oz? The amount of wax/ingredients in oz? or the weight of the entire jar at the end when it is a complete candle? I know this is a pretty dumb question but I am so worried I’m going to print up $100 dollars worth of labels & then someone will say, “Oh no, you actually do it this way with candles...” & then I look like a rookie! 😂

I had a thought about the frosting. Since you use jars, have you ever tried to pour an outer layer before you add the fragrance, then add the rest of the mixture with the fragrance? Even without the jar, you could just dip your candles to get the outer layer. Not sure if it would work or not, just throwin ideas out.

Well, I feel dumb for asking that question... But if I use 16 oz solid it melts to 8 oz. Do I use 16 or 8 oz to calculate the amount of FO needed? I measure my wax. Maybe I should weigh it? Thank you.
@TheProcrastinatorFiles6 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. My guess would be, 16oz ends up being 8 in the container. Therefore to actually make 16oz, you need to make 32oz (including f/o) for it to melt to the exact amount of 16oz... If that makes sense. Give it a shot, let me know how that works out.

@TimberRidgeGifts6 жыл бұрын
when I heat to remove frosting I try to remelt about a 1/8 inch layer all the way around the candle. doing this will make the entire outside of the candle roughly the same temperature, allowing it to recool at roughly the same temperature. If you are only heating the spots with frosting, then the areas around where you heated are going to be different temperatures and cool differently, which is what caused frosting to begin with.

What brand/type of color dye do you recommend for soy wax melts?
@Ruru42946 жыл бұрын
Thank you for making this video. I just started learning how to make candles and I'm running into some problems myself. One question i have is some people say to heat up your jars in the oven at a low heat before you add in the wax. This method is suppose to prevent cracks and sink holes. What are your thoughts on this? Is this true? Or can a person just skip this step?
@TimberRidgeGifts6 жыл бұрын
I never heat my jars. Glass is such a good conductor of heat that the jars are going to very quickly warm to the temperature of the wax poured in them. Unless they are ice cold from sitting over an AC vent, they are not going to cool the wax to the point that it is going to cause problems. Adversely, heating them can cause the wicks to loosen from the jar, especially if you have used a glue gun. So in my opinion, no benefit and can cause more problems than it would hope to fix.
@Ruru42946 жыл бұрын
thanks. I will skip that step. I made my first candle and have turned it on for the past 2 days. One thing that i noticed is that the wax is burning perfectly but all around the jar i see wax left behind even though the wax is melting down. How can i prevent the wax from staying all around the jar. I would love to show you a photo if its easier. Are you on facebook?
