That pine looks wonderful. Sometimes you try one technique and then decide another approach looks better. I envy your weather. In Central Texas we're stuck with 100 plus days and no rain.

With temps that high, it seems to me that it becomes a little more tricky candle pruning the pines. One has to do it before the new growth hardens off. If the hardened off new growth has to be removed, at least leave a little bit of it remaining (at least a half inch or so) when pruning the new growth back, or if when possible, prune it off all the way and back to a new candle shoot that is just starting to push up at the base of the new growth or lower. The new shoot will now become the new meristematic point where growth hormones are concentrated and into which the branch can now focus its energies.

Can you always prune everthing of? I am afraid that my three will die. Thanks in advance.

Candles on pines can be pruned anytime. But to achieve the typical Japanese pruned pine or sukashi look, they need to be pruned in the late spring and in the fall as I have discussed in the video.
