"theres something about gun gum... that it is sweet and delicious, that it is drugs, and that its a high stakes game, and its all of those at the same time." - Hank Green, Scishow Tangents

I conducted the Tootsie Pop experiment many times as a kid. You might not think so, but those things could develop sharp edges which made continuing with the experiment risky for tongue flesh integrity. Unlike the owl in the commercials, I made it past three, and even got to the chocolatey center more than once, but always seemed to lose track of the lick count.

Amazing poem from Hank. The moment I heard the end I paused and sent it to the wife person.

Anyone else find it interesting that right around the time we developed candy and were able to bring more sugar into our diets that's when things really started to develop as far as arts and technology. Being that our brains run on sugar us having more access to concentrated sources of sugar helped to boost brain power and productivity maybe?

that’s a really good hypothesis! i wonder if this could even be researched cause i’d love to learn about the connection

3:02 This reminded me of a drink from my childhood. Kool-Aid used to have its own line of Capre Sun like drink pouches. Kool-Aid had two variations of the puch. One with a clear back, the other completely opague. Kool-Aid's grape pouch tasted _exactly_ like grape flavored cough syrup.

Your AI used candy heart messages. Those hearts are made by Spangler Candy, who bought them from Necco in a bankrupcy sale in 2018. Necco made them for about 157 years, as in, Civil War soldiers ate them. From Gettysburg 1863 to AI in 2022, those candies have been on a trip!

There is also the word Kandiszucker or just Kandis in German. Kandis consists of crystallised sugar lumps used in tea in northern Germany.

Hippy parents...or working-class. We sometimes had little bowls of chocolate chips or mini-marshmallows for "dessert" when I was really little. Also, chocolate doesn't exist (as such) in nature. It's a huge process to make it!

Wait, wait, wait, wait... Where is the center of a tootsie pop? Is at at the chewy tootsie-roll-center? Because Ive been measuring to the absolute center of the pop.😮

i would say a candy is any treat made primarily from overworked sugar (caramel is made from heated and stirred sugar), that cools naturally into a solid, but they can use science to keep it as a gel nowadays. It might be controversal but i would say most "chocolate candies" would be considered a baked good imo, like the edge of them tho. Like a snickers bar would be candy but only because the caramel in it.

I have to put my soda cans (12 oz) in a coozie because it takes so long to finish drinking it, and without the coozie it would warm up too much and tastes too sweet

I feel that one major explanation was left out... Diabetes. As I experienced, I was pre-diabetic and as I moved towards full-diabetic levels of sugar would make me tired and feel bad. And in the USA at least as we get older many of us tend towards diabetes.

according to the place I went to for an eating disorder, soda is a fruit, not a candy lol

As a diabetic, I need to satisfy my sweet-tooth with sugar-free candy. But I found a favourite brand which is a licorice hard caandy, which settles my tummy with it's' anise flavouring, and does not give me the runs. However, I really miss chewing gum -- even sugarless gum -- my hubby will not buy it for me, because he felt I binged on that stuff. By the way, it's been said that bees chew bumble-gum. ╰(*°▽°*)╯

There is a treat which is functionally a tube of artificially flavored and colored fruit-flavored corn syrup. I consider that candy, but I don't consider soda a candy (maybe, in certain instances, soda syrups, but not the soda itself). DO you guys consider flavored corn syrup a candy?
@kitsu_noshi Жыл бұрын
I think in german there is no word for candy, we just say sweets or salts.
@Demonic-X2 жыл бұрын
its funny but UK we dont call it Candy , we say Sweets , which can be a pudding , a muffin or a boiled sweet , only americans call it candy , with the exception of Candi-Floss
@OriOfTangleWood Жыл бұрын
I was thinking this as well. The whole discussion didn't relate to me as a Canadian. Candies are a specific kind of sweet thing. Chocolate is not candy.
