Black Mesa is the best mod/complete overhaul I know. I highly recommend Black Mesa if you want to replay Half Life. Black Mesa stays true to the original with a more modern interpretation that flawlessly blends in with Half Life 2 graphics and style.

Even doom 3 aged very well. although that game came out in 2004. it still amazing. but that is what you get if carmack is making the game and engine. that guy is a genius when it comes to programming. point is it wont matter how old the game is. it can still hold up to this day. half life had some parts that are really really outdated at this point. but thats because of the source engine. its not the best engine out there.

Bitte mehr Vergleiche zwischen Original und Mods! Low vs Ultra Grafikeinstellungen kann ich auch selbst ganz einfach nachschauen, wenn ich ins Grafikmenü gehe, aber bei Mods, die ewig installiert und konfiguriert werden müssen, geht das nicht so leicht. Würde mich echt über mehr Vanilla vs Mod freuen ^^ Grade bei Fallout, Dragon Age, GTA oder Gothic/Risen bieten sich bei sowas an.

+EN EF it happend in 2013 when they patched the game for linux and gave the project to one single guy who has barely ever played hl 1. First he forced hd models to always be enabled and also deleted one important command for scripting. and yes bhop scripts are quite essential in hl because the game has 0 support for bhop timing and still it benefits a lot from permanent bhopping. However, about 2 month later there was a patch again that allowed to disable the hd models but yeah... its stupid. also the folder structure is extremly messed up now... you could always easily replace all modelfiles and so on in the past... Honestly why would you have to DISABLE it. - the hd models are not even made by valve, they dont belong as a basesetting into the game. Also the HQ models (in mp-settings) are still disabled by default and those were in the game already when it shipped 1998. (They have a lot more poly than the default playermodels) So the default setting is low poly playermodels and high poly weaponmodels which don't belong to the game. this is not made better by the fact that the 16:9 support of the game cuts away the bottom and top of the screen which is making the game look even more retarted.... try default_fov 105 //end of rage

Zwischen 2004 - 2012 wurde die Mod entwickelt, abschnitt Xen fehlt bis jetzt und wird nachgereicht (irgendwann). Valve hat den Entwicklern auch geholfen (vermutlich Finanziell). Valve hat die Mod ja nicht entwickelt, es waren die Fans die von Half Life: Source total enttäuscht waren da das spiel praktisch eine eins zu eins Kopien des Originals Spiels war mit total veraltetet Texturen. Ursprünglich sollte die Mod auch Black Mesa Source heißen, Valve forderte von den entwickelt den Name "Source" zu entfernen was insgesamt von Valve sehr tolerant war.

I know I'm 2 years late but you should've done this comparison using the best quality version of the game, being the PS2, or the unreleased Dreamcast port if you wish. They have better and more HD maps, models, textures and more, or if you were looking to stick to the PC version I'd recommend using the Dreamcast mod. Either way still a good comparison video.

Sure Black Mesa has better graphics, but in terms of gameplay, I've had more fun with the original Half Life. Also, I liked the original's sound effects and soundtrack better. The HECU Soliders and the VOX also sounds better in the original.

Better than most games. When I play the marines will throw grenades and try to flank you while your in cover and stop to shoot when you pop out, and if your about to win a fight with a vort they will ocasianly flee. Bullsquids, hound eyes and head crabs act like wild animals (which they are)

Half-Life 1 still looks damn nice. I mean, the colors, the atmosphere, the aesthetics. Of course the boxy look sucks, but that's another thing. I always thought that the feel of Half-Life is given by the washed down, gritty, worn off, rusty look of the compound. It just made the place look like it's been active since a long time and makes it somehow more real this way. They have conducted hundreds of experiments, everything was just another day at work, but today... today is special. Thank you Valve. You added some magic to my already magical childhood, and still do. Every year I play this again, and it feels magic, still, and that's awesome!

Kudos to the team for this! Obviously a remarkable effort. I will eventually play this. As a downside, i feel that everything is 'darkened' - I remember a "Doom 3" critics review which said that "it's inexplicable why one would make great graphics and then turn off all the lights in the game". Somehow, I feel that this happened here as well. The monster at 2:26 is clearly visible and has 'personality' in Half-Life, while in Black Mesa, it's more of a spectre/shadow with glows. As a second critique, some of the monsters look generic, they lack the strong personality they once had - thinking of the one at 5:31. But these are just petty observations, they pale in comparison to the overall achievement. Besides, the 'critiques' I raised apply to current 'game design trends'...I guess most of us old school gamers noticed the shift of interest from narrative "immersiveness" to aesthetic intensity. But the same shift took place in music and movies as well - sound and video quality dethrones quality content.

Good unlike some people you actually showed Half Life at its best by using the HD pack that quadrupled the number of polygons for the models, sometimes remaking them. You also forgot to change the FOV to 106. You also should have used the Super definition pack which ports the PS2 models and shows Half life at its absolute best
