Couple of corrections to make here: 1.) Yahya isn't in Lovecraft Country - we didn't watch the show and were mistaken since that was also a Monkeypaw production. 2.) The puppets were done by Manual Cinema, not Kara Walker. Similar styles but different artists. Sorry!

I love the idea of several candymen. Like in the ghost rider comics, there are several ghost riders acting as Spirits of Vengeance. Candman is, for the most part, the Spirit of Vengeance for POC. I also think the first story you hear of candyman, is the candyman you summon. With Helen, she heard Daniels story, so she summons him.

But let me drop so knowledge about the Riders on you tho, technically there is only two Riders in the Marvel universe (One of whom isnt actually a Spirt of Vengeance at all) at present since the ones from other cultures where killed by Dan Ketch in the 09 Ghost Rider series (which was AWSOME btw) and the other Riders that showed up at the end were previous host of Johnny's spirit Zarathos that he called from hell as back up. But yeah I do agree the ideas dope and I agree that the Riders from other cultures shouldve stuck around to give us a Ghost Rider Corps that would've be awesome, alas not

I liked that Anthony’s piece was titled “Say My Name” as it’s reminiscent of the call to “Say Their Name” as part of the movement for Black lives in remembrance of those who have been unjustly killed. I can see how that ties into William’s point of “this can’t be the end” and speaking someone’s name to continue the legacy of their life and not ending on the injustice of their death.

Spoilers: I don’t think Antony needed to be standing to be seen as a threat to police. I agree, but I think it has more to do with the timing of the edit. It is the instant that cop enters the room that he shoots Anthony. I would be more forgiving of it if he took a moment to survey the area and then shot Anthony once he had determined what was going on, but it seems sort of odd that he would just instantly go to shoot someone on the floor. It feels like the cop is way too omniscient because of how instantly he is able to tell who is on the floor, and his aim was just way too accurate, only hitting Anthony. I think that is one of the film's biggest flaws, where any character that is even slightly antagonistic to the main characters just feels cartoonishly evil in how they are portrayed, whether it be a random art critic having an argument with Anthony, or actual murderous cops, all of the antagonistic forces in the film just feel so over the top. Not sure if it is just their performances, or a combination of weird performances and off putting writing, but I know personally it was one of the things that took me out of the movie every now and then.

Mythical figures tend to have features that "stick" to them and their stories. The Greek god Dionysus used to be heavily associated with death and rebirth, with one of his origin stories detailing resurrection after violent dismemberment, an act that would be recreated by his followers in a sacrifice to him. Well after he became a much different god of wine and partying, you can still see dismemberment show up in stories about him even when that version of Dionysus had nothing to do with it. Candyman is similar. He is a being made from stories, an urban legend made manifest. As the stories change, so does the character, but some things are so inherent to the core concept that they cling to every version of the character for years. I see Daniel Robitaille appearing before Breanna at the end of the film to be the equivelant to Dionysus showing his much older, much more vicious tendencies as revenge against the house of Cadmus in the Bacchae. Or Odin still being the one-eyed leader of the Einherjar after being reinterpreted as the leader of the Wild Hunt. Or the Irish pantheon still retaining their importance in the tales of mythical heroes long after their religion got Christianized to hell and back.

I think the reason that Candyman is truly “brought back” at the end and why he isn’t “back” earlier on is because Sherman is a remnant from when Candyman was killed in the first movie. He’s trapped in the mirror, still fulfilling his purpose but not in his fullest form. It’s only at the end of the movie, after Burke brings him back, where he finally comes out of the mirror into our world.

I honestly loved this movie. Personally I thought the themes on trauma were really well-developed even though they weren't as subtle as they could have been. Like how William was traumatized while doing laundry as a kid, and then grew up to own a Laundromat. Or Brianna having a traumatic childhood involving her artist dad and then becoming an art director. I think it ties into how trauma is a cycle and it's impossible to just bury it and pretend like it never existed. Also Brianna kicks ass.

The way i see it is, the reason why Sherman Fields Candyman was killing everyone is because thats the version Burke told to Anthony first. Fields materialized in Anthony's mind and is the one that materialized to commit these new murders. It also plays into the urban legends changing through word of mouth. It also bothered me how Sherman happened to have a hook for a hand, felt too convenient for him to become Candyman but after thinking about it for a few days I'm wondering if maybe he didnt originally have the hook hand or jacket and thats just how the story has evolved over time, maybe he was just a regular guy and the laundry man's memory of him has changed associating him with the story, and thats how Anthony imagines him because thats how the story is told to him.

Before sawing off Anthony's ouchy hand, Burke (Laundry Man) DID say that you have to keep some things the same about Candyman (about the hook), so I can totally see that. Candyman and the story of him having a hook for a hand predated Sherman and his death, so with him reborn as part of that legacy and needing to be consistent with the rest of the Candyman legend, Burke could've changed the details and made it part of the story that he already had a hook before his death. I wouldn't put it past him to fudge the details ;P

I could feel this script TRYING SO HARD as I watched. and I was disappointed. Really. As a black horror fan who LOVED the romantic predation of Tony Todd's Candyman (the 1st one, fuck the rest), and a born/bred Chicagoan--I REALLY wanted this movie to win! I wanted to be Candyman's victim again! Did not happen here! But! it looked fucking beautiful. Nia DaCosta and her DP did a wonderful job. That art critic kill for instance, just the set up and the building it took place in, the way she pulled out in silence...is ICONIC. The actors did their absolute best with what was given to them...the body horror REALLY REALLY got me (ew!) AND THAT FINAL ACT? *smh* ....I was just confused and repeating 'what the fuck?!' out loud in the theater. The crazy cult-leader heel turn for Will. Anthony catatonic and mutilated and the FINAL FORM of this new-era Candyman being some hive-headed floating apparition, I didn't care for...but I got it. I enjoyed moments with the writing, and I wanted all of the themes presented to wrap around the story and make a sensical bow-- but not really, not for me. I'm with Chelsea. There wasn't enough visceral lust in this. You had these moments where Anthony knew he was that sexy mf that could charm and seduce... and let's be real, to be living like that with his successful girlfriend he had to be putting it down (loved Brianna's brother's joke about this) ...but nah, I wasn't feeling the ache and the longing and the poetry of the original. Thanks James & Chelsea. We all know you love horror and this horror villain in particular--so if anyone is feeling disappointed, we KNOW it's you.

There was actually a great interview with Nia DaCosta where she talked about why the screenplay deals with Teyonah Parris's trauma over her father that deals with how Black women are forced to sidestep their own personal troubles in order to be nurturing and supportive of those close to them who are also suffering from similar dilemmas. Also, I'm convinced DaCosta structured those dreams similarly to the way Luca Guadagnino structured Dakota Johnson's dreams in his "Suspiria" because both sequences are edited in distinctly similar ways and put similar emphasis on sound.

The original Candyman has a pretty clear romantic subtext (which is overt if you consider the deleted/cut from the script kissing scene) where Helen is heavily implied to be some sort of reincarnation of Daniel Robitaille's lover. The first movie, if anything, has him deliberately set her up as her own urban legend, separate from the Candyman mythos, which is shown at the end when Trevor summons her by saying Helen five times, rather than Candyman. The two urban legends are inherently connected, but not the same. tl;dr the original is actually about Daniel Robitaille getting a girlfriend.

Opening of Evil Dead 2 might've REMADE the original Evil Dead but the series was not dormant and it is the first sequel to the movie. But if I am not mistaken, Bruce Campbell did use "requel" to describe what Evil Dead 2 did in an interview. In regards to the Candyman title being reused, it makes sense in the context of this film thematically--the idea of black men in general being the collective Boogeyman. I think putting a sequel number or a subtitle would've taken away from that concept. As far as how I felt about the film, as a black male from the south that has to deal with the internal and external politics of the military and what I am allowed to feel and not allowed to feel because of my service, this film resonated very deeply with me. That said, I had a few issues with some of the editing. That high school bathroom scene felt completely out of order and some of the details with the siblings family felt like it needed to be fleshed out further.

I don’t think the bathroom scene was out of order considering that earlier during the art gallery one of the high school girls was there and thought it was a fun idea to try it out with friends. The scene not only results in brutal murders but also shows what Anthony has unleashed upon others in his desperation to be noticed. It shows that not only did his arrogance bring him down but he takes others with him.

Re: the comments regarding how white Candyman's granddaughters were in the now non-canonical sequels - it would be entirely possible that that could occur, over several generations, if there weren't any other grandparents with Black ancestry or at least much more white ancestry than Black. We had our own byzantine classification system for it here in the U.S., after all, to the point that some families were so ashamed that they had Black ancestors they'd cover it up with claims about being descended from native tribes or simply not acknowledge it at all. Interracial sex between Black and white people, despite being the ultimate taboo in American society up until relatively recently, was a fact of life in both slave states and after Reconstruction. Doesn't explain why Dan Robitaille was trying to get with them, though (seriously, what).

Anthony getting shot while laying down was the point of the narrative. The point is about the Black men getting killed when they were not a threat. It is also is emphasis on how the story always changes. Helen Lyle's scary story was that she kidnapped the baby and then walked into the burning fire which we all know is not 100% true. When you watch the credits and they are doing the paper shadow of The Candyman that died in the laundry room, the narrative changed there as well. He was already in the laundry room when he was found, he didn't run to the laundry room. And the same with Anthony's shadow puppet. It shows him standing with the hook shadow on the wall when he wasn't. It was to prove a point.

I'm glad to hear I wasn't the only one confused by the scene where Anthony is shot. For a moment I wondered if he was ever in the room and was already a ghost because the framing of the shot made it to where his coat blended in with the color of the wall and he wasn't centered in the frame. I at-first thought they shot Brianna, then maybe a still-alive Burke, and it wasn't until she was in the car did I realize that Anthony was shot (without hitting her, somehow). All in all, I liked the movie and the intent behind it, just the execution left a bit to be desired. Also, after watching the movie, I thought it would've been a cool visual if they had Sherman Fields' Candyman slowly morph into the Daniel Robitaille Candyman as Anthony learns more about the latter. Start subtly between scenes, like have Sherman's prosthetic hook become the original Candyman hook and have his white shoes become Daniel Robitaille's black boots, and then when the stuff really hits the fan, have him wearing the big black coat and have the chest full of bees. I think this would really compound the fact that the original Candyman has found Anthony and that there was never any escape. Just an idea.

I think showing not Anthony, but his silhouette standing up and then falling down following the sound of a gunshot would get the message and idea across, and be a cool compliment to the theme of shadows and shadow puppets seen throughout the movie. This is just a thought though and you're free to disagree.

Only reason I believe that is because when it cut back to Anthony laying on the ground, he was a bit further away from her after the camera zoomed/cut away from Brianna sitting on the floor. But honestly, I really did think at first the police shot at her but when it turned out the Police shot Anthony instead, I was taken out of the movie because if they shot him while Anthony was in Brianna's lap, those rounds would've gone through Brianna's legs and leave her in pain (which would mean that whole scene should've taken placed in an ambulance instead of the back of a squad car). i would like to say, as a black person myself, there is a place for subtle and explicit symbolism and social commentary. it makes me happy, even if others think it’s not handled well, that there’s an attempt to just skip the pretenses and be in your face with these things.. with today’s social and racially tense climate, you kind of have to be direct with some of these things. I do not mind explicit and no-nuance commentary because i feel like it’s not meant for those of us who are aware and active in this knowledge and what to do with it- this is for the people who aren’t knowledgeable at all. Subtlety will fly over the head of someone who wasn’t looking to begin with. Such as with Candyman (2021).. We’re at a point in time where these messages have to be less subtle.. now more than ever. Despite the poor pacing, I was surprised by how much I liked this movie! That said I'm a part of the rare never-seen-Candyman-92 camp (planning to rectify that this weekend).

Anthony laying on the ground when he was killed is a major point of the movie. He wasn't a threat, there is no possible way the police could have interpreted him as a threat unless they were entering that room with pre-dertimined motivations. If he was standing, he could have been seen as a threat

I cannot express how glad I am that the podcast is back. I really missed this! Edit: If you are looking for another reviewer...Elliot from MovieFiles is a great reviewer! So if you need that other perspective for this movie, I recommend him!

Wanted to point out the opening production credits and how they were mirrored. I think it was a chilling subtle touch. The music I thought was fantastic. I also appreciate that they didn't go full slasher and kill every supporting character. I think a lot of characters weren't average red shirts and the didn't treat them as disposable gore. I think the school scene hurts the movie. Visually it's kickass but it is forcing a slasher aspect that the film didn't have. I love gore so it was a joyride for me. I almost wished that Anthony's skin had been hatching from the wounds it would have been a cool rebirthing kind of thing. Love the channel like always and love how Chelsea is so well researched.

unfortunately, i also didn't love this movie which sucks because i was really excited about it. most people i know who saw it liked so thought i was in the minority. i just felt like it bit off more than it can chew in terms of social commentary intertwining with the story. very surface level exploration of gentrification. also thought some character beats read as super juvenile. the kid has a traumatizing experience while doing laundry, then as an adult owns and operates a laundromat? is laundry his character trait? seems like a middle schoolers definition of characterization. also the whole high school sequence did feel unnecessary. also, in case you missed it, the reason the girl was at the art exhibit was because of her mom. it was shown for like a second at the end of the scene. i thought teyonah parris was incredible but her side plot about her dad felt like such an after thought. really wish she had more to work with outside of the last 20 minutes. some stellar cinematography and kills though. i thought the art critic's kill was easily the best of the film. so well shot and surprising! that entire scene was great.

I agree. The social commentary took over more of the film than the scares, and it was 80% of the movie. The Candyman stuff was great, when they did it. But everything else was like, awkward and forced.

You guys should definitely check out the opening scene from 1992 Candyman. The first woman killed definitely says the 5th "Candyman" after her boyfriend says the first 4. I don't 100% understand the rules, but the splitting of saying his name between 2 different characters was definitely established in the original. Really good insight from Chelsea on the themes in this "requel" 😊

when James looked so thought full about being able to restore that mural, sadly this crap happens all the time its genuinely painful as an artist to watch historical murals and art pieces just destroyed for reasons so stupid like "it'll make the land more profitable" I truly hope that the mural can be restored. Its so so painful art will always be more important to a building if anything it tells more story than old building since art is another language anyone can understand, a form of wordless understanding.

1:08:08 Actually in the original the guy in the girl's story at the start says Candyman 4 times and the girl says it the 5th time, turns the light off and gets killed by Candyman. So it's not that one person has to say it 5 times necessarily but it just has to be said a total of 5 times so 5 people saying "Candyman" once would probably summon him.

I enjoyed hearing your takes on the film. There were certainly things in this movie that I hadn't thought about that you guys talked about. I love how thoughtful this was. The almost 2 hour episode of discussion is fine with me. It feels like hanging out and talking with you guys about the movie. I love it. I love how drawn out this is, going over so many aspects, bringing up many issues that honestly I hadn't even thought about. I think for my first watch of films I typically just let myself get drawn into it and absorbed and take a break from my analytical side. (I do know a lot about special effects so sometimes I get really picky about things like prosthetics, so I get how you guys being so scholarly about film, the writing is often something that throws you, or is noticeable.) I agree that the extra 10-15 minutes, minus the highschool scenes could have helped the film flesh things out more for the ending to play better. (obviously, we need more Tony Todd. Just give us 10-15 more minutes of Tony Todd, lmao) Great episode!

44:20 based chelsea lol im glad you touched on the chicago-ness of the movie bc its something i feel a lot of hesitance now that productions dont utilize their setting enough, its probably bc of production costs (tho these lots of stuff filmed in the city constantly) but i wish movies definitely kept their settings in mind especially somewhere so rich in environment like chicago, i had this feeling for trial of the chicago 7 too where it completely Lacked any sense of the city beyond the name, also where i first say yahya and knew he was gonna have a big career. also a small correction i do have is the shadow puppets are done by manual cinema tho the style is definitely reminiscent of kara walker's work

I had the same issues as James I felt like the social commentary was way too overtly used and felt extremely unnatural to me. however I do love the themes of artist exploitation and the importance of remembering the horrors and terrible events of the past. Also I love the cinematography and score of this movie it looks and sounds beautiful and I love it. I also like the urban legend angle they took with the movie of having this story less of a tragic story of revenge but more of a sinister evil that curses the city of Chicago its very interesting.

While I do enjoy social commentary I also felt it was away too strong and forced at times. I enjoyed everything but that and it leaves me torn because I want to say I love it but the social commentary leaves a bitter taste and I don't think I'll watch another Jordan Peele film after this. The message wasn't hard to tell as hundreds of films have done it, not sure why he chose to do it so blatant.

@@HatCreature wait wait this wasn't Jordan Peele, he didn't make the movie, he produced it. Please check out his other movies because yeah this isn't like him at all, whereas Nope is really far more subtle and I highly recommend.

30:44 a hook, James? Coincidence? 🤣 Love how y'all are willing to say that your opinions are your own and reflect your own experiences and aren't the be all end all. I also felt like some of the little threads of plots maybe didnt fully bloom out the way they could've and I hadnt considered the possibility of multiple writers trying to compromise being why. Still a really good movie though and I'm looking forward to seeing more from Nia!

Saw it last night, was blown away by this movie. Incredible sequel. It's a slower burn compared to most modern horror and the ending feels just a little rushed, but good lord the tone and suspense through this movie is incredible along with the cinematography.
