Cannot agree with you more! I've got a tank emergency and needed this information for setting up the filter that I just bought. Instructions on where to place the filter & hoses in the booklet did not work for my tank but I couldn't find anything telling me how to set it up on the side of the tank. This guy got straight to it - so helpful, even though I've lost a fish while searching for this information.

@@sadieapple1 " I couldn't find anything telling me how to set it up on the side of the tank. " I hate when you buy something important as a filter for a tank & no good info drives me crazy, I just bought a canister filter for my 75 & hardly any info on what goes where but it's not a name bran filter either, I got it for like 60 $ & bought a extra pump just in case the main 1 quit on me at some point, I like the filter it's just the right size I needed & I'm not 1 for canisters BUT nothing else was giving me what I wanted, I have a video of it.

Well crumb! I have been so frustrated with my dead zone of gunk! I searched out a few videos and stumbled into this tutorial. Perfect since I have 2 fluval cannisters. Time to rearrange my set up! Additionally.... it would be great if Fluval made extension intake tube for deep tanks.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Just purchased the Fluval 407 and I've literally been searching for hours to find out if the cannister needs to be behind the tank with no success, until I found this video. Your set up is exactly what I needed. My tank set up can't accommodate the filter behind the tank. My cover/light won't accommodate the input and output being on separate sides of the tank. The instruction booklet says it has to be placed behind the tank with hoses straight, no curve to them at all. My old filter kicked the bucket on me last night and I ran out and purchased this first thing this morning and sadly I have already lost a fish trying to figure out how to set this filter up properly. Thank you again. Also, I agree with ScottW - GA-USA, thanks for no long lead in and senseless blabber.

I have a FX6 on a 125. Intake, output on opposite ends the way I've always done it. I have been struggling with the plants on the intake end, just like you said would happen. I've talked to my LFS about solutions. Never did they say put them on the same end even though I specifically asked. Sometimes it's a "If you have to ask, should you own fish" type of response.... The fish aren't my issue, it's learning what the live plants need. I was looking for videos with comments on how the spray bar would help with this. I have an unused 207 I am going to set up for now on the 'dead end'. I may go ahead and order a spray bar for next month cleaning, and re-arrange. Out of my 2 tanks, the 125 is the only one with the most "plant issues" so I kept thinking it has to be oxygen flow. My Flex is amazing, Makes me think I need intake and output in the CENTER of the tank, like the flex! Thanks for the video

I am glad I saw this video. I am in the process of replacing a HOB filter with a canister and have been wrestling with proper placement plan. I have an enormous rockscape so it’s a little tough to get good flow through the tank. I may put the intake and return together on one side to keep the hoses short and reduce pump head.nThis will at least give me the most powerful return flow……..

Hi, Thanks for this video! We just upgraded to a new filter (307 performance) for our 60gallon tank, the Plecostomous seems to be loving life and pooping up a storm. the intake and output valves are placed how you have them in this video, but the pleco poop isn't being sucked up by the filter. We are having nitrates and ammonia build up and have had to euthanize a few fish now. I used some of the biostars from the previous filter and the sand substrate wasn't changed so I think the bacterial load is likely fine. So what am I missing?? The output has good flow, and there is nothing obstructing the intake. Any help is appreciated.
@fluval
@fluval 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Karen, it sounds as if there may be some dead spots in the tank that aren't getting enough flow and as such are allowing debris and waste to accumulate. Try adjusting the output to see if you can avoid having any dead spots. You could also consider adding a small circulation pump, such as the Fluval CP1, to help resuspend any debris and waste and allow the filter to remove it!

@fluval
@fluval 2 жыл бұрын
Glad it helped! When using two canisters you can either cross the input and output tubes or place one canister on the left side of the tank and the other on the right with their tubing's on their respective sides. The ultimate goal is to have even water flow across the entire aquarium with some surface agitation! 👍

Hi Eric. Thanks for the video. I have the 107 canister filter on my Roma90. If you have the inflow and outflow on opposite sides, in which direction should you point the outflow? Towards the side with the inflow or the front of the tank or a different direction? Also, if I adjust the flow lever, does that reduce the amount of water filtered per hour, or just the strength of the outflow?
@sludgebuster9677

Point it away from the intake or you refiltering the same water on a smaller tank. If the outflow strong flow it can disturb fish so direct it against the glass for a lot less disturbance.

Great video, thanks! Do you have any suggestions for placing a second canister filter in a large aquarium? Safe to assume both back corners of the tank have a heater, output near the surface, and input near the substrate? Or is there a better, more efficient way? How might the flow be interrupted by two results pointing at one another?
@fluval
@fluval Жыл бұрын
Our recommendation would be to install the two canisters exactly as you described! If the species you'll be keeping prefer strong, directional flow, aim one output along the back wall and the other towards the front of the aquarium. If not, the random flow generated by the two water outputs "hitting" each other will effectively distribute water throughout the tank!

Thanks Eric really timely! I'm going to switch to a one side set up like yours... so tidy! As the duel output on the FX6 doesn't seem to be strong enough to reach the entire length of the tank (4ft) I've recently bought a Hydor Koralia 3G Circulation Wave Pump, that I've yet to put in my 300 L (75G) tank. The reason I bought it was to help with breaking the water tension... to create more oxygen for my Discus. Ok after that long story I'll get to my question... where do you recommend I position the powerhead (and where to focus the flow)? Knowing I'll have both the FX6 intake and output on one side, the same as you have in this video. Thanks so much for the helpful video Eric, much appreciated :).

Would having the intake say in the left hand back corner and the output a few inches away pointing diagonally across the tank also work perhaps even more so seeing as theoretically you would get even more push from your output?

The sterilizer is 2" output/input, so I know I would need to convert it somehow to 1" cause that is the hosing of the canister filter. I also want to install a lily pipe system. Thanks to share the tips it's really help for me but just wanted to know the out-let one should be inside the water or surface the water ? as I saw in your video it's inside the water and many videos I saw it's surface of the water. Sometimes due to power cut is there any chance to go water in back direction or any chances of leakage ? and last question after installing this filter do I need to have air pump or not required?
@fluval
@fluval 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Shubhrajit, thanks for your comment! It is best to place the output at or slightly below the water surface to create surface agitation without splashing water out of the tank. If the motor head seal is not properly maintained, it is possible that backpressure can cause your filter to leak during a power failure. After installation, an air pump is not required although, air pumps do contribute to better water circulation and oxygenation which leads to an overall more balanced aquarium. We hope this helps! 😊

I have a new acrylic aquarium that only allows mounting of piping on the back, not the sides (or ends). Using a lilly glass discharge, it has to go straight toward the front face of the tank which is 13" straight out. Do you think the water will hit this front face and go down the front of the aquarium making a circle back to the suction placed by the discharge or should I go for suction at the opposite end of the tank? You copy?

Hi Casey, yes the tank water will hit the front of the tank and circle back! If you notice poor flow, try to angle the Lilly pipe diagonally so that it blow the water towards the front of the tank but also sideways, this will help improve overall flow. Hope this helps! 😊

The best solution is to submerge it such that it still creates good surface movement.

If you put the splash bar at the bottom or mid range of the tank would it generate flow to move particles off the bottom or would that not be proper flow?

That would work, sure! You'll just want to make sure you're getting adequate surface movement with that sort of setup.

Hey just wanted to know if bubbles going into the intake is bad or not or if it will damage the canister filter
@fluval
@fluval 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Cameron, thanks for your comment! Bubbles entering the filter will not damage the unit however, if an accumulation of air forms within the canister, know as an airlock, the impeller can run dry and fry the motor. It is best to keep all air diffusers and CO2 diffusers away from the filter input. 😊

I have a 60 gallon tank, and a 407. Right now I have the intake in the back left, and the output on the back right, but I notice Im not getting a lot of movement towards the bottom (24" depth) The plants (and debris/snail poo) don't move. Should I move the output or install powerheads? Placement of these please? The tank is lightly planted at the moment, but Id like to add more and I want good flow.

Hello, you can definitely face your filters output slightly downwards to help improve the flow. Should it not be enough, power heads are another great option!

Quick question, what are your thoughts on sharing a canister filter between two aquariums with t-fittings? I know there's the sharing of water between tanks but beyond that, if my filter can handle the total gallons, what are your thoughts? Thank you for your video.

Hi Matt! We don't recommend doing so, but if you can get the plumbing figured out, it could work!
@metalhammerjimmy5663
@metalhammerjimmy5663 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt, I have a three-tank setup that runs off one large canister filter, and it works extremely well. The main issue is getting balance between tanks, and this is achieved by having a dedicated unpressurised hose connecting the water in all tanks. Other than that, intake and return hoses can use a T, or preferably a Y, to split the flow.

The biggest concern that needs to be pointed out, is that shared water means a disease that starts in one tank, could end up affecting all the tanks in the system. I'd rather have a small number of sick to deal with in one tank instead of two, three, or even four tanks worth of sick fish due to waterborne diseases

Does the outtake need to be near the surface causing agitation of the surface water or can it be a few inches below as it not create much disturbance on the surface? I have floating plants that are being damaged by the water flow on the surface but I’m concerned about not getting much oxygenation being below surface. Thanks.
@fluval
@fluval Жыл бұрын
Hi Timothy, great question! The more the surface is agitated, the more favorable the oxygenation process will be. However, if you need to drop the output slightly to not disturb your floating plants, that's completely okay - your fish will still be perfectly fine. 👍

One question. Can I place co2 diffuser under canister input to mix it with the water?
@fluval
@fluval 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Simmi, generally it is not recommended to place your CO2 diffuser near the filters intake as the bubbles will enter the filter which can cause the motor to run try or airlock. It would be best to place your diffuser under the filters output so that the bubbles are dispersed throughout your aquarium by the output flow.

Hello Thanks for the vedio I have heavy planted 350 L aquarium with 10 angel fish and 3 alge eaters I installed 2 fluval fx6 in this aquarium is it lot of filteration or is that ok ? Also please let me know does the water turn over will be reduced when the media is setup inside the filters ? Thanks
@fluval
@fluval 2 жыл бұрын
Hello! Two FX6 filters on a 350 L aquarium is quite a lot of filtration - you may have too much water movement, depending on the species of fish you're keeping. The flow rate does indeed depend on the filter media used: if you have lots of fine sponges, for example, the flow will be reduced more significantly.

Hi there! 👋 The concepts are very much the same with bowfront tanks. With regards to the aquarium at 1:25, a second section of spray bar was added shortly after filming! With spray bar kits, you do indeed want the unit to cover as much of the length of the tank as possible.

Hi Peter, thanks for your question, it is not required. The output nozzle should be at or slightly below the water line. The rubber connector can be both in or out of the water based on the positioning of the output nozzle. Hope this helps clarify for you! 😊

What happens if I have a bubbles going into the intake of my Fluval 405 and it’s constantly being pushed out . Is it more harming than rewarding ? I have it on a 100 gallon
@fluval
@fluval 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jason, bubbles going into your canister filters intake is normally not advised as the input of air can cause an airlock within the unit and can potentially make the motor run dry. An airlock can cause reduce to complete flow loss and, in some cases, can break the filters motor. 😊

I know this is an older video, but just for awareness; if you are using the Fluval E series heater, you will get a low flow error if you set up the tank like he does in this video. I love their E series heater, but put it immediately to the right of the powerhead to avoid the low flow error on the heater.

You're absolutely right! E Series heaters should be positioned directly in the path of water flow to work most effectively. 👌
