Very informative. I've been obsessed with vacuums for over 30 years lol. But I always had uprights. I became concerned with how a vacuum affects indoor air quality after having an in-house demo of the Rainbow in early 90's. Too expensive then and now so I back then, I jumped on the cyclonic bagless upright bandwagon. I just got my first ever canister vacuum 2 weeks ago. So much more versatility!! So many more features!! So much easier to use!! Because of my air quality and air purification concerns, I opted for a water filtration canister vacuum. Not the $4K Rainbow but the Sirena. Love it and love canisters now.

They are so much better, they are lighter and more manoeuvrable to use, in mainland Europe, upright hoovers aren't really a thing and cylinder vacuums dominate. I've never understood why more hoovers in the UK and US are upright when they just seem way more cumbersome and impractical
@Bunkysworkshop

First I love the look and sound of those old Hoovers and I agree with all that you’re saying here. One thing for me is I hate pulling and dragging a vacuum around behind me. Knocking into things and so on. I feel you need both a upright and a canister for a home cleaning day. I normally use the central vac and rotate through my upright vacuums just for some fun.

I agree, you need both an upright and a canister. For me I have mostly wall-to-wall carpet and I find an upright works best for me. I use a canister for stairs, dusting, walls and high places. I would say if you have a combination of hard floors and area rugs a canister would be best. Having both though you get the best of both worlds!

Helpful, thorough review. Noted reference to Consumer Reports, which said that uprights clean carpets better because their design puts more weight on the brush roller, thus providing better cleaning. Not sure about that as the better vac manufacturers have remarked brush needs airflow at its housing to get dirt out of rug. Still, CU tests show Miele uprights outperforming Miele canisters on carpet.
@PerformanceReviews
@PerformanceReviews 2 жыл бұрын
Miele canisters have about 30% more airflow with the exact same nozzle design. The canisters have always cleaned better than they're uprights that's just a fact. I would tell you to go test drive the two side by side but the upright's been discontinued for over a year now.

I have loved vacuum cleaners since childhood. I love both, but I lean more towards an upright for my needs. When I was growing up, we had carpet and I got used to using uprights (Kirbys, Hoover Convertibles, Eureka F&G, etc.). I have mostly hard flooring, but I have large area rugs in just about every room. I wouldn't mind a good quality canister, but I have two Kirbys with attachments, a Royal all-metal upright, two Shop Vacs and a Dirt Devil hand vac.
@NureinFeigling
@NureinFeigling Күн бұрын
Honestly I’d just use the Kirby as a canister. Why buy a canister and an upright when you have one that is both! Although converting the Kirby every time you vacuum is a pain. That’s why my rainbows get more use.
@mattjones7621
@mattjones7621 Күн бұрын
@@NureinFeigling That is what I do. I just said I wouldn't mind having a good quality canister, also. I would say once a week, or once every other week, I use my Kirby Diamond in attachment mode for the floors or areas I can't get to with my uprights. Most of the time, I use either my vintage Kirby or Diamond in upright mode for all flooring surfaces. If I think it might scatter debris, I just turn the roller brush off by rotating the belt lifter to the 'off' position.

@@NureinFeigling I have the same tool and, yeah, it comes in handy sometimes. I agree about using it as a canister, because it is easier to get into tight spaces and vacuum hard flooring with it. I have a Panasonic bagless upright. Great suction when new (It's turning 8yrs old in 2022), but it clogs quickly. Small pebbles that get stuck in sneakers, cat litter just doesn't make it up the hose and into that sharp turn to fall down into the canister. I have to take it apart to clean out the lint buildup. Going to get a bagged canister vacuum.

I had the same problem with my Electrolux Commercial canister vacuum. I still have it, it's fairly old and runs fine but I just don't like it. I much prefer the Dyson ball I have, which can dust and do under beds, with it's detachable hose. I know people on vacuum review channels tend not to like Dysons, but mine has been great and is nicer to use than other vacuums I have used except Roombas. I haven't use a Miele though. It seems nice. Both my machines are pretty old but still clean well. The Electrolux does clog easily though, especially with cat litter or by my woodstove.

For me the decision was easy, since I have mostly wooden floors with area rugs and most of my furniture is elevated on legs, except my shoe box that goes to the floor. With an upright I'd be sweeping out from the back of most of my dressers and such. Not sure of the newer uprights but back in my day the hose too short and didn't allow me to reach the head valance on my vertical blinds. So for me it will always be a canister. I live in a building and they use a Hoover upright to run the length of our wall to wall carpeted hallways. For that use, the upright is perfect. Thanks for the video. I actually like Hoover, my mom's favorite, and probably would have been a loyal customer, however they don't make a canister on wheels. My gym uses a backpack style vacuum and I thought it might be good for a home.... that is until he turned to get under one of the machines the backpack canister hit the machine next to it. I imaged me wiping out all the pictures I have on top of our bureau so that decision left my mind completely.

I'd say a canister would have better vacuum because the air, with particle contamination, only goes thru one 90 degree angle while an upright goes three 90 degree angles, one is the gooseneck in the floor tool and a U turn (two 90 degree angles) before the bag/bin. Otherwise they have their pros/cons. Electrolux, in my experience, has always pushed the canister to the consumer. I've always respected the wisdom of Electrolux.
