I feel like Cannibal Corpse toned down the misogyny and general shock value almost immediately when Fisher replaced Barnes and significantly upped the musicianship and songwriting. Aside from being a better vocalist and much more likable figure than Barnes (IMO), Fisher also just isn’t quite as demented. It’s still violent splatter movie stuff, but it’s not shockingly offensive anymore. I like the stuff they did with Barnes, but I’m often glad he’s difficult to decipher. I feel like they really prioritized the music over the shock value when they brought Fisher in.

Yeah it can be hard listening to those older songs because of how gross they can get at times. Later bands would take it further like Devourment but Barnes era CC was still pretty shocking lol

Agreed, Fisher era (which is my personal favorite) feels like a fun schlocky 80s slasher film, Barnes era (which is great but has flaws) feels like an edgy 15 year old trying to sound cool in front of his friends, although there are still some pretty great tracks, like Hammer Smashed Face, I Cum Blood, and despite it feeling a bit misogynistic, I do admittedly enjoy Addicted to Vaginal Skin, that last one mostly just because it’s honestly creepy as hell to me with the opening dialogue

Torture is like Kill perfected for me, and those might be my two favorite CC albums. I’d definitely put Tomb, Vile, and the Bleeding higher. I do agree with with the general consensus from y’all that the Corpsegrinder era is superior overall. Rutan’s addition as producer and later lead guitarist was a home run too. That guy is criminally underrated and has played with both Morbid Angel (for Domination and the criminally underrated Gateways to Annihilation) and Cannibal Corpse, along with his excellent work with Ripping Corpse and his brainchild Hate Eternal, and being one of the best producers in extreme metal.

Cannibal Corpse doesn't have a bad album, so almost everyone's rankings are wildly different and that's ok! Personally, my top five corpse albums are Kill, Torture, The Wretched Spawn, The Bleeding and Bloodthirst.

Oh my god, first people being honest about Tomb of the mutilated! Hallelujah! It´s so refreshing... And I like how you respect the differences between you two. Cannibal corpse is actually the reason why I got so late into death metal. They were my first experience in DM and I totally rejected the whole genre for almost 20 years after this first listen. I don´t agree with the majority saying that CC doesn´t have bad albums. They have albums full of bland tunes, and these are what I call bad albums especially in death metal, which is a "meat and potato" style of music in which you can´t do much wrong. Now i matured and I can enjoy some albums: - Bloodthirst - Violence unimagined - Eaten back to life - The bleeding - Skeletal domain My favorite song though is "Meat hook sodomy". It´s so vicious and gross, and the riff is sick!

Man I mostly agree with your list. I do have a soft spot for "The Wretched Spawn" though. It was the album that got me into Cannibal Corpse and into Death Metal in general. I never could get into Chris Barnes's vocals so I fully agree with your placement of the classics. Man I remember meeting Paul and George almost 20 years ago. For everyone saying "never meet your heros" I guess you picked the wrong guys to admire because those dudes where so nice and humble. Killer band, killer album, I hope they got a few more in the tank.

One of my proudest metal moments is meeting Vince Locke, the artist for all of CC's albums at a convention. Super chill dude. He did a panel where he sketched stuff and explained the process behind creating the Violence Unimagined cover since it was new at the time. He signed an ad for his art because I didn't have any merch on me or plan on seeing him that day lol.

@@forgemastermetal that's a great question! To paraphrase Vince, I believe he said that these days, the band gives him complete creative freedom to design the covers. He'll get a call from Corpsegrinder with the title and a brief description, and go from there. He was particularly proud of the alternate art for Violence Unimagined (the headshot of the woman with the tongue), and I even told him it was my favorite of the two versions. Vince was a comic artist first, so it was great to get his insight into how he works. Very sweet guy, I highly recommend talking to him if he's ever at a convention near you.

Vile to me is the most underrated album CC has ever done, it seems like the exact opposite of The Bleeding in a lot of ways. The Bleeding has Barnes On Vocals, very simple catchy riffs and stuctures, Eb Standard guitars, understated cover art and unhinged lyrical themes. Vile on the other hand has Corpsegrinder on vocals, much more technical and almost tech death riffs and song structures, Way more downtuned guitars (Bb Standard but also C# Standard, the only album they've ever done in this tuning), insane album cover (though not as much as Tomb or Butchered) and more understated yet still violent and even more personal lyrics (Perverse Suffering, Orgasm Through Torture). I think many didn't like Vile because it was so different from The Bleeding, and it was them shifting direction totally. It was their first attempt and I love it, but at the same time I think they got that style together even better once Pat joined.

I bought everything by Cannibal Corpse ,and Tomb of the Mutilated was difficult to get into due to the Vocals being too whispery ( similar to Mortal Throne of Nazarene by Incantation). I bought a remastered Tomb of the Mutilated, and the Vocals were a bit louder in the mix, and Upon the Throne of Apocalypse which is a demo recording of Mortal Throne. Both albums sounded much better. I really only liked the Barnes albums, not because Barnes is a better Vocalist than Corpsegrinder. It's just the earlier rough style seems catchier to me. I do like Devoured By Vermin, Mummified in Barbwire, and Dormant Bodies Bursting a lot though. Kill and Bloodthirst are the only Post Barnes full albums that I like.

It's all subjective. My short theory is that people have different albums that "hit" them at the appropriate time and those albums become attached to that person's perception of and relation to the band. It's all subjective! However, there are albums that some people love more than others and the spectrum seems to be more based on what generation / age group you fall in more than anything else. I'd be curious to see some hard data on that, though!

Love your analysis, agree almost 100%. Glad you called out the change of cringey direction in album art/lyric content, early CC is almost a complete no-go for me because of it. I've never been a huge fan, so hearing your top picks let's me be a little more informed when digging in. All honesty all 5 of these guys are the nicest guys you'll ever meet. The older era of cannibal the gets criticism for the misogynistic themes that was all chris barns writing and he is definitely a unhinged person. But they still play those older songs like Stripped, R****, and strangled live and ive seen cannibal alot live and there is just as much women at the show as there are guys and the ladies go nuts when they hear those songs and have fun.

Since Cannibal Corpse is so consistently good, the album rankings I see are all over the place. However, this is probably the lowest I've seen for Tomb of the Mutilated and The Bleeding. Those are landmark albums and certainly much higher for me. Nice to see Evisceration Plague high up here. That one is usually lower in most rankings. The new album, Chaos Horrific, is fantastic. Looking forward to getting into it more. It's death metal, intentionally offensive imagery is kind of the tradition. But yeah, metal should become more politically correct I guess? It's shocking to get you to think. What's far more horrific is that the album cover is only an exaggeration of what happens every day.

Honestly, I would put all of the Chris Barnes albuns in the okay tier (even lower for Eaten Back to Life). I can’t fucking stand his vocals, even in The Bleeding where it’s a little more bearable. Every time I hear songs from this era of the band performed live with Corpsegrinder I just think how much better of a job he does singing them than Chris did. They need to be rerecorded asap, I love some songs on these records but I just refuse to listen to Chris Barnes sing.

Rerecording those albums with corpsegrinder vocals would literally ruin everything they are supposed to be. those albums were oriented to OG Brutal Death which has to have Cookie Monster vocals, if you dont like it, bad for you and f off. Cannibal went technical and less brutal from vile and forward. if you like that stick with it. Changing Original stuff idea is jsut ridiculous

I don't understand the love Kill gets. It's the album I first heard from CC back in the day, but so much of the album is forgettable. The stand out tracks for me are really stand out, but as a whole it just ends up feeling mediocre. I also think Jack brought some great songs to Cannibal; even something like slain from TWS was a nice change of pace on that album. Not that Rob didn't on kill, or later albums, but I think Jack was a better fit.

I have lived in Tampa since being dumped into this fishbowl of shit called life for 60yrs. That being said, the best part of my life was my 20s because I went to every Thrash, Hardcore then a little later Death Metal show in the Tampa Bay area and Corpse along with bands like Deicide, Morbid, Atheist, Bad Brains, Napalm Death, Circle Jerks, Sepultura, etc .played here a lot. They were supported and loved here, TB fans are a big part of the reason Death and other "extreme" genres of music exist now. I know this is a "critical" review of CCs material but their worse albums are heads and shoulders above almost every other Death Metal bands' best material, especially live performances! Show a little more reverence to the best band in the Death Metal" genre ever, Cannibal Corpse! Of course, you can also tell me to f__k-off!

We give some albums a hard time (with hyperbole, mind you) but have nothing but respect for them. I was giving you guys an Oportunity by the time you were ranking Tomb of the mutilated but you just basically put all of the most Original and Death Metal-esque CC albums inthe lower positions which is just ridiculous considering the rest of their discography is basically the same with slight changes from album to album... i stoped watching and im not gonna see the whole thing, starting by saying the first albums have a lot of filler, not memorable and not liking the album covers is a very YIKES of an opinion when their later albums are the most same sounding stuff eve.., Kinda tells you guys are just the typical Good Clear Production soft Death Metal Enjoyers... Yes, because liking early 90s CC is the standard to which all death metal opinions are based. I love CC, but that’s a tad harsh. Let’s not pretend early CC is what invented death metal. It’s great, but others from the time period and before did it better. Liking modern CC more than old CC doesn’t mean you have shit taste. It also doesn’t mean only liking clear modern production. I mean, the old records were made with Scott Burns, who’s records were clearer than a lot of OSDM.

Dudes! Love you guys, but I really can't relate to you on this tier list. Maybe it's a generational thing. Butchered At Birth and The Bleeding are some of the most iconic death metal records of all time. It's bewildering to me that you rate them so low, given the other music you like. As someone who was there in the 90s, your statement at 5:20: "this is how you do death metal in the 90s" feels inauthentic, like hearsay. Why say something like that if you were still little kids then? There’s nothing wrong with coming afterwards. No need to pretend. With respect, let me add this personal reflection: I’m also offended by this stuff, especially the early records, but for me the discomfort these records cause us can be points of artistic *strength*, not weakness. If you think horrific imagery is “cringe,” then maybe this kind of metal isn’t really your thing. That's part of why this music exists: it creates catharsis for the limit cases of experience. This stuff is *not OK*. It’s probably more popular than it should be. I expect you to understand this, because you guys listen to a lot of awful shit, from a standard moral perspective, and yet you’ve made it your calling, at least for now. If you haven't been taking that element seriously, then you have been trivializing suffering, which is morally wrong. In that case, if it takes listening to Cannibal and witnessing their album art for you to feel hurt, then I would respectfully suggest that Cannibal's art is therefore successful. If you feel disgusted by this art and feel a renewed desire to reject the violence it portrays, then *it’s working.* If it's been a while since the traumatic events you allude to have transpired and you still feel activated by this stuff, I encourage you to dial back on engaging with media like this and seek out help from somebody you trust, ideally a licensed therapist. I’ve had to take a timeout myself, sometimes for years before I could appreciate such aesthetics again. Otherwise, as long as it keeps nourishing you, please keep up your good work, even if this old dog disagrees from time to time.
