I've watched a handful of your videos now. Do you teach your sons to cook & can as well?
@HeartwayFarms2 жыл бұрын
Hello! Yes they are both younger and being instructed as well. They are also involved with helping Josh do things such as fencing, animal care, bridge building and a host of other things :)

Moving into our first house in a few months. It's 75 year old home with 75 year old root cellar!! So excited. We do have some maintenance to do on it, as it has some moisture issues before fully using it properly. Great video 😊

I love old root cellars. Can't you just imagine the things that were stored away down there over the years? When I first started canning I went crazy with making jams and preserves, then I realized our family eats maybe 6 jars a year 😂. So now I only make one batch and give half of it away.

Awesome! Your root cellar is lovely. I use my basement, but wish my kids were more interested, but they are young.

I use wood fruit crates (like grapes) to stack my pints. The crates stack leaving about a half inch of head space above the jars. Stacking with no pressure on the jars! In the old grape crates I have i have space for 16 pints and the space of a bit of cardboard between the jars so they dont knock into each other

Great information. I just started canning again this year after a long break when we had a lot of damson plums from our trees. I remembered to take the rings off the processed jars but didn't know about not stacking jars so I will attend to my pantry today!!!

I don't have a lot of freezer space so it's what I do is I cube the pumpkin and put it in my jars and then I put my pumpkin pie spices in the jar and can it and then when I open it up I just puree it it's so good just a helpful tip

Build some shelves with legs tall enough to go over the top shelf cans... and double that top-shelf capability to maximize that space.

What temp range does your root cellar get ? Do you have problems with rust on your lids ?
@Cynthea_Lee3 жыл бұрын
You could make a wooden shelf for the upper concrete shelf... 4 legs (or as many legs as you need for a long one so they don't bow) and then stack them that way... just make the legs 1/2 inch higher than the jars below to give them space to pop if they are going to. It would double the storage space. If you stored all your smaller jars on the bottom concrete shelf you might be able to put a second shelf there as well... I couldn't tell when I watched the video IF there would be enough space on the bottom one to do it AND still have room to pull jars off the upper concrete shelf. I wouldn't go more than ONE shelf up on the upper one unless you can attach it to the rock/concrete wall behind or the whole thing can / will topple over.

I never store with the bands on.. and because I use re-usable lids I double check the seal three weeks later.. You can stack jars in produce boxes as long as the upper box doesn't settle on to the jars below and can fit up to 14 quart jars into a produce box.. Usually there is close to an inch of free space between the jar tops and the underside of the top of the box

Hello! I think they covered it pretty well in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5rOp2h-n62risU They like to can cooked chicken rather than "raw packing" it: just a note on the method they're using in the video. Hope that helps!
