This recipe is a delicious replacement for the grocery store canned version and is a wonderful meal mix to have ready in our pantry for a quick meal. Simply add hamburger and spoon out on a bun and there you have it!

I had canned your sloppy joe mix before, per your instructions in your original video. It was so good, and I have eaten all of it. So I just made another batch a couple of days ago. I had a partial jar (not enough to can), so I ate it over some warm cornbread, and it was delicious. I also plan to use the mix in meatloaf, chili, etc. I really like the flavor! Thanks for sharing the info again.

Just to let everyone know, Ball put out a correction on this recipe. It is 1 cup of vinegar not 1/2 cup of vinegar. The newer prints of the book are correct but the older ones like mine still have the wrong amount. Just want everybody to be aware of this.

Update: I opened one jar today and added a smidge more vinegar to offset the strong taste of the Grey Poupon mustard. The sloppy joe sandwich was good. I bought my ebook edition last week. It still says 1/2 c vinegar. I just put my jars in the canner and started counting the 20 minutes. I should have read the comments prior to making. ☹️ My initial taste test says there is too much Dijon mustard in it. The first time I mix it with hamburger I’ll try as is and maybe add a bit more vinegar in hopes that softens the strong mustard flavor.

I replayed your video a few times to get the amounts I thought I heard 1/2 of ACV. Anyway just in case that’s what others heard too. According to ball recipe it’s 1 c. Also for sloppy joes I’ve used lentils instead of ground beef even my husband will eat it. Look forward to these jars on the shelf.

@@RoseRedHomestead from Federal Copyright laws. The United States Copyright Office Compendium, the Office’s manual for examiners, states that a mere listing of ingredients or contents is not copyrightable, as lists are not protected by copyright law (chapter 313.4(F)). The Office has also stated that a “simple set of directions” is uncopyrightable. In addition, courts have found that recipes are wholly factual and functional, and therefore uncopyrightable. As the Sixth Circuit described in Tomaydo-Tomahdo, LLC v. Vozary, “the list of ingredients is merely a factual statement, and as previously discussed, facts are not copyrightable. Furthermore, a recipe’s instructions, as functional directions, are statutorily excluded from copyright protection.” Even if the description of the recipe is sufficiently creative and copyrightable, the copyright will not cover the recipe’s ingredient list, the underlying process for making the dish, or the resulting dish itself, which are all facts. It will only protect the expression of those facts. That means that someone can express the recipe in a different way - with different expression - and not infringe the recipe creator’s copyright. What about a compilation of recipes, like those found in a cookbook? A cookbook can be protected under copyright law as a compilation if the selection, arrangement, and coordination of the included recipes is creative. The copyright for a compilation does not cover the individual works included in the compilation, such as the individual recipes within the cookbook. It only protects the arrangement and selection of those recipes, the art and pictures. As the Supreme Court explained in Feist Publications, Inc. v. Rural Telephone Service Co., Inc., a factual compilation may be copyrightable, but copyright protection is limited to the “particular selection or arrangement” and never to the facts themselves. What this means is that someone could copy an individual recipe from a cookbook or a few of them without running afoul of the copyright law. Please let me know if you need additional information. 🙂

Thank you for this video. I love the fact that this is meatless. When I make sloppy joes or chili for family get-togethers I need to make a small vegan portion for my daughter, which I gladly do. I have also developed a red meat allergy (alpha-gal syndrome) so I can't have ground beef. I have to sub with turkey or chicken. With jars of these on-hand I can make "one" meal for everyone easily. Bonus points for steam canning! I don't yet have a pressure canner. I'm looking at getting an electric one as I have a glass top electric stove and I know there's some debate about pressure canning on those.

Unless it had meat in it, you processed it way too long. It's only 25 minutes for quarts without meat, if you are pressure canning. (40 minutes for water bath canning, without meat, of course. You don't water bath can meat.)

You should be able to, but check with a tested recipe for specific directions for processing pints versus quarts. Jim

May I ask why you'd allow foil to have contact with your food? It's not very healthy and causes health issues.

There is known leaching of the metals. You can use parchment paper in its place.

Did you not test for the acidity level because you used your own tomato sauce and you would have tested for that when you made your tomato sauce? I can appreciate you not wanting to make your videos too long, so maybe at least mentioning and then linking videos that help those of us who are not so strong yet would be helpful. Even though I have been watching for several years I am still very much a beginner and actually working through things.
