Belly, same Boston area, same era as Breeders. Tanya Donelly was in The Breeders, and also Throwing Muses. She left and was the front in Belly. Gail Greenwood is the bassist in Belly and she fucking rocks. They had a few hits in the early 90's, we're on the cover of Rolling Stone, etc, but broke up after a couple of albums, but reformed with same original members a few years ago and are still at it. I highly recommend Feed The Tree.

Alanis Morrissette had amazing songs. Her album "Jagged Little Pill" was so different, it blew minds. She is/was an icon for women. The song "You Oughta Know" is a good start. Juliana Hatfield - another indy darling. Out of Boston, she was originally with indy group, The Blake Babies in the late 80s. Then went solo in '92. She goes back and forth between hard sound and softer sound. Her voice belies the harder edge of the songs like Rider or Dame with a Rod.

From the Breeders you could move backwards or forwards with Tanya Donnelly, the guitarist. Backwards gets you to her work with Throwing Muses (fronted with her step sister Kristin Hersh). "Dizzy" has Kristin on vocals while "Not too Soon" has Tanya doing the singing. Forwards gets you to Tanya's fronting the band Belly and then her solo work. "Feed the Tree" and "Super-Connected" being some fairly well known songs.

The Breeders have other good songs, but before doing another one, I would do a songs from Pixies, the band that the Breeders frontwoman Kim Deal was in before The Breeders. A possible choice from them is "Monkey Gone to Heaven". Other '90s rockers by women include "Seether" by Veruca Salt, "Connection" by Elastica, and several songs by PJ Harvey: "Sheela-Na-Gig", "Rid of Me", "50 Ft. Queenie", "Down by the Water", and "This Mess We're In". (The last one is from 2000.) Liz Phair was good too, but was somewhere between rocker and singer/songwriter.

"Bull in the Heather" by Sonic Youth. It's one of the best Kim Gordon-led songs in their discography, and she's too much of an indie icon to be ignored. The video is great, too; it shows Kathleen Hanna of Bikini Kill dancing around as the band plays, interspersed with a very pregnant Kim singing and other cool ideas thrown in. It was directed by Spike Jonze - who also co-directed the video for "Cannonball" with Kim Gordon! 🤘

One of my favourite things about this song is that it doesn't really strike me as something that was entirely thought through in terms of what the structure would be. like they had the lyrics for the verses, had the pieces of the guitar parts and knew the basic idea of the chorus, and that's it. It's as if someone was just nodding or silently counting down to the other members as to say "okay, get ready to change to the chorus in '3-2-1-now' or "okay, i'm about to sing a verse then play that clean lead in 3-2-1-now".

Belly, Letters to Cleo, Throwing Muses, Veruca Salt, L7, Tracy Bonham, Sonic Youth, Sugarcubes, the Donnas are all female fronted bands from this era (late 80s, early 90s) that have the same sensibilities as the Breeders.

Great example of instruments dropping out to let another shine. The bass shines as the guitar and drums drop out. Then the guitar and bass drop out for a quick drum shining moment... then the bass and drums drop out for the guitar to shine.

That's Kim Deal the original bass player for the Pixies along with her twin sister Kelley Deal. Kim Deal didn't get a lot of her songs on the Pixies albums as Frank Black was the primary writer, so the Breeders were her outlet as a side project. "Divine Hammer" is another decent track from that album. You can hear her vocals on several Pixies songs, usually in a complementary fashion to Frank's lead vocal. "Here Comes Your Man" is a primary example to check out.
