just wanted to ask; out of all the bikes you've cut up and reviewed over the years, is there a brand that has had consistently high construction quality or least amount of flaws in the frame, and which you would consider buying if you were in the market for a carbon road bike? recognizing of course that there's no perfect brand and each frame comes with individual flaws

Thanks for another great inside look. It's really cool and just a little scary to see the evolution from the earlier carbon frames to the latest gear that's out there. Thumbs up!!!

Im really surprised by the filleting with adhesive at the joins then overwrapping. That's a small bike maker technique, as you probably well know Raoul. I can't believe they use this in volume production! And seem to make it work.

Have you ever thought of measuring frame tolerances as a measure of build quality? I’ve not really heard of massive failure within cannondale but they do seem to be the worst QC regarding parallel and angular misalignment of the BB shell along with typically undersized bb shells which crush bearings.

Good reviews, I just have a small suggestion. After review of the frame, in last part make to clear assessments on two aspects, Frame design (How good/bad it is like you've mentioned dropout designs or lack of support on direct mounting etc ) and Frame production quality assessments (resin pooling, delaminations etc). Coz production quality obviously improves over time, but a bad design will continue to have problems. So clear distinct assessments will make for better reviews.

If you happen to ever get a Cannondale ballistec carbon frame, would you mind doing a comparison of the quality between the two? It would be very interesting to see the difference having two Ballistec frames myself.

Cannondale used to provide dealers with cutaway CAAD aluminum frames. They always looked real clean inside. I took an endoscope camera and dropped it down the seat tube of both my carbon cannondale synapse and my chinese non branded carbon frame. The non branded frame looked better and cleaner which was surprising. Then I learned the non branded frame was made by Martec, a big oem frame company.

I feel Like there is no perfectly produced bike frame. Which is the best you have Cut Open or Had the best Carbon structure?
@sepg50844 жыл бұрын
Go aluminium. Price to performance ratio is very good, simpler to manufacture so lower chance of quality issues, tried and tested.

Caught on to you through the Maven channel. Really like the cut ups. Any chance of getting ahold of a Parlee or other botique carbon frame in the near future? It would hold my interest if you targeted some of the less mass produced carbon frames. Thanks for considering.

I think he uses bikes he gets in and has to keep if there is a warranty issue. So he's at the mercy of the cycling public and what they are riding and breaking. I'm with you though. I'd love to see some small manufacturer's bikes.

I have this bike and and am happy after seeing this cut-up review. The design seems to be a good one but the steerer plug is the ill-fitting one that comes stock. I have replaced it with a plug from Specialized that provides full coverage for stem but is complete aluminum. Is there anything I can do to prevent galvanic corrosion or lessen it from occurring between the carbon steerer and aluminum steerer plug? Would applying grease between the two materials help or worsen the galvanic corrosion? I understand removing it and thoroughly cleaning it regularly might be the only way.

Thanks for another interesting video. I have a Cannondale Synapse carbon with alu seatpost. How do I avoid galvanic corrosion?
@graydonbardwell46375 жыл бұрын
Apply paste to the seat post... not that different to the issue with aluminum seatposts in steel frames. If they weren’t greased they would weld together.

What do you think about Hope HB 160 MTB?you think if you cut one of those bikes it may look better or worst than this?MY bike is a 2018 Cannondale Jekyll and you can see the interior of the frame and BB area and looks good to me. Down tube is all fabric reinforced I think (it has the same chess form). It has a true CF frame protector in that area. PLZ CUT AND ENDURO or trail bike!!!!!Great video!

The jockey wheel on my supersix made a 1-2mm puncture to chainstay about 1000 miles ago (looks like a dent). I don't think it's compromised the frame, but should it be covered to prevent moisture entering?
@LuescherTeknik6 жыл бұрын
Aaron ___ typically the internal damage will grow until it fails. This is the cause of JRA failures. I would recommend that you don't use the bike.

I rode this frame 2014 himod version a couple of times in 2015 and it was epic! Best ride ever. I didn't keep the bike but bought the CAAD12 aluminium bike this year due to same geometry as the supersix and very good reviews. However I am disappointed. The feel is no where near as good as the supersix. The build on the supersix was better and the wheels were different: carbon spokes, on the CAAD12 I have "standard" wheels with steel spokes. I also really noted the difference in ride feel between the aluminium spokes on the old mavic ksyriums and steel spokes (compagonolo zonda). I really liked the harsh and direct feel of the aluminum spokes. The carbon spokes were similar. How much does the the wheel (tire, rim, spoke) influence the ride feel compared to the frame?
@DavidChoi19847 жыл бұрын
I have both... 2011 caad10 and 2017 ss evo hm.. SS is slightly smoother and stiff at the BB but otherwise the caad feels 95% as good..
@literoadie35027 жыл бұрын
Please read the book ''The Bicycle Wheel'' by Jobst Brandt and you will realize spoke material really doesn't affect the feel of the bike much, other things have far bigger effects. Here it is in PDF for free: caravan.hobby.ru/materiel/Bicycle_Wheel_-_Jobst_Brandt.pdf

Lite Roadie, thanks I will read it. Building lots of wheels myself now. I expected spoke material to be highly relevant

I had a Cannondale CAAD 3 (back when CAAD 3 was top tier) mountain bike frame crack but not fail on me. This was after 13000 miles of training, XC racing and urban assault rides. To me, that is amazing durability for a 3.2 lbs aluminum frame.

i am beginning to think all these brand name frames are no better than generic chinese or generic brand taiwanese frames. And this makes sense to me since all these brand name frames get made by the same factories making the generic name frames. One wonders where does all that profit go to for a $5000 MSRP brandname frame??
@SurpriseMeJT6 жыл бұрын
I really doubt the Chinese copies are equal. There are reviews out there of those frames. Maybe you can try yourself and let the world think of the knock-offs?
