I'm here after the tragic news that Do Dodonpa will be closed forever. It was one of my top bucket list rides and one that I wish I could've gotten on. I really hope Fuji Q puts a worthwhile successor in it's place (RMC t.rex anyone?) instead of a Vekoma family boomerang but it will be a massive regret of mine that I never got to sit in that tunnel hearing that guy say "Launch time!"

Canobie Coaster would say: This launch on Dodonpa is downright insane. As crazy as Dodonpa's launch was when the coaster originally opened, would you believe me if I told you it got even stronger in 2017? Believe it or not, it did. In 2017, Dodonpa was renovated into Do-Dodonpa and there were three key changes: One, Do-Dodonpa's top hat was removed in favor of a giant 161 foot tall vertical loop, and I was sort of bummed to learn the top hat was being removed. Many called the airtime on Dodonpa's top hat one of the most intense airtime moments in the world, it's not hard to see why. When you have a coaster travelling as fast as Dodonpa with such a sharp crest on that top hat, you have the recipe for some thigh-crushing ejector airtime. Even some enthusiasts said this airtime was a bit too much for them. So I sort of understand why the park decided to replace this element with a more comfortable vertical loop, but I still am curious how that top hat would have ridden. This loop necessitated a second change, in order for the train to complete the circuit, the eye-popping launch had its power increased. Dodonpa originally accelerated guests from 0 to 107 mph in 1.8 seconds. Do-Dodonpa accelerated guests from 0 to 112 mph in 1.6 seconds. So not only was the top speed increased, but the time to reach that top speed decreased, so launch got roughly 17% stronger. That's absolutely crazy. Third, Do-Dodonpa's lap bars were replaced by bulky over-the-shoulder restraints. And I'm bummed this change was made since the old trains looked so much more open with the lap bars, but the over-the-shoulder restraints thankfully don't cause any...

Canobie Coaster would say: But what does Do-Dodonpa do with all that speed? Unfortunately, not as much as I would have hoped. Most of the ride is a high-speed loop around the park, and sadly, the route is pretty flat. There are no hills for airtime and the path is pretty linear outside of one far turn that is taken so gradually you have hardly any sensations. The ride is also quite bouncy, and that's probably explained by the wheels. One of the most distinctive features of Do-Dodonpa is the fact this coaster uses rubber tires. So you shake and bounce quite a bit, especially on the far turn. I wouldn't quite call Do-Dodonpa rough as the tires absorb the shocks quite well, but Do-Dodonpa is far from a smooth ride. The only element of note on the course is the aforementioned vertical loop, and this loop is quite good. Its massive size means you navigate quite slowly at the top, so you get quite a bit of hangtime up there. And it rode considerably more smoothly than the rest of the coaster... A) presumably because of the speed you take it. B) presumably because it's 16 years newer.

I was lucky enough to experience the top hat of both this and XLC (no where near as intense), but because it's the only of the original 2 air launch coasters remaining, I too am devastated they removed the airtime hill. I have not experienced it since the speed increase and loop. This coaster could still be drastically improved with some airtime hills before and one floater speed hill after the loop.. It would turn it from a one trick pony good coaster into an unmissable one.

The dip after the launch does look like it would provide a pop of floater, but I do agree that chucking in an airtime hill or two would be good. Hell, on the straight section near the end, they could probably add a heartline roll.

This is high up on my bucket list, but I really fear that this ride will never re-open, along with many other launch coasters. For reference, in the Coaster Studios video where Taylor reviewed his favourite launch coasters, all the launches he placed in the top 5 are either removed, SBNO, or unlikely to last past 2024 (he didn't ride Formula Rossa and I think that will stay for a few years). TTD and Volcano are gone, Do-Dodonpa may be forced to permanently close by the Japanese government, don't know what's going on with Xcelerator but I'd be surprised if it lasts past 2024, and with Kingda Ka losing it's speed record and with the merger, 2024 looks like the last year for this great coaster. While the quality of coasters is improving, it is truly a sad time for fans of the good launch.
