The guide's accent sounds like a mix between Italian/Japanese/Spanish, which is absolutely adorable.

Lavinia you really nailed it! Those three languages remind Finnish very much so, by sound. Italian has about same vowels / consonant ratio as Finnish does. I've started to learn Japanese couple of times because Japanese words are so easy for a Finn to pronounce.

Finland wasn't one of my «must travel to places» but now I really feel like going. So cool that the government pays for the upkeep of those facilities. The equivalent in Canada would be around 100$. The guide seemed so nice!

Anton Suni: but the money they use to build the houses, returns back in circulation when builders buy Finnish stuff and services. So the money you use domestically, doesn't really cost anything to the nation. People resist taxes, because the money is transferred to someone else. Things that you buy from foreign countries, that money the nation loses. Taxation is a good way to get infrastucture built, and it is the work done that matters. Buy domestic!

When you said "you try to repeat that" in the very beginning when introducing your guide, I was all "not a problem" but then again, I am a Finn. :D Love watching these, and I'm extremely happy that you are visiting Finland, yay! And you pronounced Finnish quite well too. :3

It's such a small world! I was randomly watching your videos and then suddenly I see Teemu, who I used to go to same high school with. And he's not even from Lapland so it was even more unexpected! Nice to see that people seem to like him (and his accent ;)) in the comments. :) I like your videos a lot, you have such a gentle and respecting way of discovering the country you're in. :)

Akuliina Mäntylä Hi Akuilina! You can definitely find ways to travel while in school. What helped me travel while in school was I studied for one semester abroad while in high school. I fundraiser money for a year so I could do it. In college, I applied for scholarships that allowed me to travel in the summertimes. There are definitely ways!

Is there any significance to the guide's decorative belt? Finnish tradition? Reminded me of belts/sashes worn by Canadian/Metis men in Manitoba.
@kognak6640
@kognak6640 10 жыл бұрын
Originally this type of belt is part of traditional sami men clothing. But it's not really unusual to see finns from Lapland wearing it. Works bit like a utility belt, easy to carry both knives(small and big one) and wooden drinking cup made of birch burl. If you watch closely, the guide have these items hanging.

I think I'm too much of a hardened city girl I got a little concerned when the guide pulled out a knife. Perhaps he has shown the shadow demo too many times since he was missing two fingers! Beautiful country.
@Aurinkohirvi
@Aurinkohirvi 7 жыл бұрын
Hah! Doubt he lost fingers with a knife. Probably with an axe or chainsaw or something like that. Puukko (knife) is very Finnish thing. Boys often get one as a birthday present too in some phase. The other Nordic people have this meme of Finns and knives, as they don't share the same tradition. It's actually a tradition from the Iron Age already: you had a knife and a longer heavy knife which was sort of a short sword, "väkipuukko" (could be almost as long as your arm, "lapinleuku" is a bit smaller version of väkipuukko). With a väkipuukko you could easily lose fingers too. Hand made knives are appreciated quality gift items. In Russia they call knives as "Finnish knives" ("finski nož" or "finka"): it's a model copied from Finland. In the Estonian War of Independence Finnish voluntary troops were feared among the Russians because of knives. That's pretty strange during the age of guns, but it's still dangerous in close combat. fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C3%A4kipuukko www.iisakkijarvenpaa.fi/fi/puukot.html?___store=fi_fi varuste.net/Lahjapuukot?_tr=3085 www.knifedreams.com/epages/knifedreams.sf/fi_FI/?ObjectPath=/Shops/2016112907/Categories/puukot/Kaiverruspuukot
