For all the people bitching about how this specific scenario test is too biased towards the Canon........ you do realize that part one was a test in a controlled studio environment.

Old video but this is the kind of shooting I deal with all the time. I have been very happy with my D800, major improvement over the D700. I had to shoot one rodeo in an indoor arena where every single lamp in the ceiling was a different color. After a while I gave up trying to set a custom balance and just went with what ever results came out. I shoot entirely in JPG, primarily because I do very little post processing and my photos are used almost exclusively either on the Internet or for media publication.

Part 1 was a studio test. We can certainly put both cameras against each other, as they are current entry level Full Frame cameras from the two largest DSLR manufacturers. We went out with pros we respect to see how the cameras could handle their shooting style. Mike's job as a photojournalist dictates he shoot JPEG. So we shot that way. Also, we compared the D800 to medium format cameras TWICE in other videos. Dynamic Range is discussed in part 1 of the series.

There was a low light RAW comparison in the first video with Nathan Elson. Basically, the D800 had much more detail in High ISO, but more noise and the 5D III had less noise but much less detail. I'd take the D800 for RAW, since you could always remove noise at the expense of detail, but not the other way around. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

It wouldn't, unless we were doing long exposures with the top LCD illuminated for long periods. Basically, this will be an issue for astral photography and very long exposures where people use the top LCD illuminator. Our test just showed very fast exposures, where the LCD was not illuminated, as Mike was looking through the viewfinder. Jordan @ The Camera Store TV

We agree but if we are going to do a comprehensive review between these two cameras we gotta test these cameras out of their comfort zones. We knew the Nikon D800 wouldn't be able to keep up with the Canon but it actually does handle itself decently in action situations especially in terms of focusing. Chris @ The Camera Store

Great review, thanks for it. I've just bought a Nikon D800 and really like it, even though I am just discovering it (coming from a D90). Regarding the quality of the JPGs, there are few options to adjust this: Image quality (Basic, normal or fine) and also JPEG compression (Size priority vs. Optimal quality) so I am sure that the quality could be enhanced if required.

Kudos on putting the specs and lab tests aside. Real world situational analysis is SOOOOO much more valuable and helpful to most of us. One common message that keeps coming across is that they're both very very good. If you're vested in one brand with lenses, flashes, etc. you'll be happy with that brand's latest and greatest.

I think his decades of employment by major papers, as well as the quality of his work make Mike a 'good pro'. As mentioned in the video, he doesn't have the time to process the amount of files he shoots, and he finds the processing on these new cameras to be so good, he rarely misses the extra information that RAW files offer. My friend, read the title and listen to the video before you post. This is part two. All about the JPEG for fast transfer file through email and the easiness for printing. AWB are those who have to shoot on the fly and don't have the time for doing these little adjustment. As for colour depth and DR, those were shown at Part 1. I strongly suggest you watch part 1.

I stayed away from the D600, too, for that same reason. Just no excuse for that camera to spray oil/dust/dirt on the sensor. I hope Nikon admits the problem. That said, I just picked up a D800e, and was worried about the left-focus issue, the green tint to the screen, and the dust issues on a $3000+ camera, and I have to say my camera is spot on. They have fixed the green tint issue, the dust/dirt issue, and the left-focus problem seems to be fixed on newer models. Congrats on your 5DMKIII!

I don't know did the reviewers realize that D800 is aimed (mainly) for studio photographers. Comparing it to the Mark III, which is slightly more expensive and has better fps, sure it performs better at outdoors! In the noice performance comparison, the picture resolution difference should be taken into account. These reviews are nonetheless a joy to watch. The field tests are awesome way to show performance!

We certainly expected that the Canon would outperform the Nikon in action action based photography, and that the Nikon would deliver more megapixels and better low light quality in studio situations. These two camera are the big sellers right now though and the closest competition between Nikon and Canon so we wanted to put them against each other in many situations and just see where the chips fall. We really appreciate your continued support and are glad you're enjoying the videos.

Because in photojournalism, the content of the photo is more important than the quality of the photo. They also explained in the video how they shoot in hundreds and even thousands, processing such high quantity of RAW files would be too time consuming and impractical. It would also be very expensive to buy a lot of CF cards and a waste of time swapping them during a shoot.
@mdrewpix1
@mdrewpix1 12 жыл бұрын
Although the situation isn't typical for most people, it is typical for photojournalists. And no, we didn't seek a win for the Canon. We looked for a situation that would combine fast action with low light. This was literally our only choice. Both cameras handled it well, especially with autofocus. I wouldn't hesitate to use either one. If you can shoot decent pictures of a galloping horse in light like this then you should be able to shoot any wedding with full confidence with either camera.

The 1000X card does approx 150MB per second and consequently keeps up much better than shown on this video. Further, the D800 is not a low light camera, obviously a 24 megapixel sensor will do better in low light, but the d800 in good light or especially with long exposures is AMAZING!

Yes you are right! My point was that the noise comparison should have been done about the same way as in DigitalRevCom video "Nikon D800 vs D4 - Which one is right for you". Watch from 10:26 onwards... and you'll see what I mean. But yeah, a minor "issue", not a biggie.

It definitely matters. I do understand your point that cameras, at their core, are about capturing light and all do that. If you actually watched the video, using a ridiculous studio light setup isn't feasible in 99% of outdoor work. Now the camera makes a huge difference. A full frame with a fast lens and high (accurate) ISO capable sensor is going to be the deal maker. Composition is what can separate a pro from a kid with a rebel, but when two pros shoot, the camera decides who wins.
@odedia
@odedia 12 жыл бұрын
Ofcourse not. Your reply has nothing to do with what I wrote. I was simply pointing out that the frame rate on the D800 can be better than stated in the video, that's all. If you've got Canon lenses, get the 5D Mark III, it's a great camera. If you have no just one kit lens and consider upgrading (like myself), then this is very important information that was dropped.

I'm not a pro and everyone's work habits are different. One group of pros who probably would shoot JPEG are photojournalists. Imagine that you have to cover an event and get the pictures to your editor in time for the publishing deadline later that night. That extra step of sorting through and processing RAW files may not fit within deadline or be necessary for the resolution requirements of your newspaper or website. I agree that things like fashion or product photography = RAW

Why didn't these guys use the 1.2x crop on the D800 to get 5FPS? You will be 1fps short of the Mark III which is unnoticeable, but you would still have more detail and larger images than the Mark III.

It's very common for sports and newspaper photographers to shoot in jpeg. They don't have the time to upload hundreds to thousands of raw images and then tweak them. It also helps with buffer performance. Your not shooting if you're waiting for your buffer to clear in the middle of an important game you don't have time for that.

I believe it's got a 20mp mode, that would be a better comparison to the Canon. I don't think that increases it's framerate any though, but perhaps it's write speed. You only get 6 fps when shooting in DX mode.

Regarding frame rate complaints: You could have set it to 1.2x crop mode and get 5fps out of it, which still bits the resolution of the 5D mark 3, generates smaller files and thus the buffer wouldn't have filled up so quickly. You could also have attached a battery grip and get 6 fps in DX mode which is 15 megapixels - more than enough for the type of photography you were doing (D800 + battery grip costs less than a 5D Mk 3). In this respect, the D800 is just more versatile than the 5D Mark 3.

A really good real world review with a total lack of BS (so rare on U Tube) as a user of BOTH Canon & Nikon I'd be happy to give either (or both) a home but the auto white balance on the Canon would swing it for me if I could have only one. Thanks for posting. Really interesting.

Hi, interesting info... Canon has a slight edge over Nikons in jpeg image processing in high iso's, but the reason the RAW files look good is cuz you're opening them in Adobe Lightroom. It's not Nikon's processing, or Canon's processing thats making the difference, it's Adobe's processing. When you import RAWs into Lightroom, some amount of chromatic noise is already discarded. Toggle on and off the 'sharpening' adjustment in Lightroom to understand this better.

What did you mean the Nikon beat up the Canon this round? This video obviously makes the Canon the winner, just slightly because of the faster speed and buffering and the white balance as seen in the test. The 5Dmark III also won the high ISO test in JPEG whereas the Nikon slightly won the high ISO test in RAW file in the previous test. They're trying not to be bias by saying you can't go wrong with both cameras.
