Canon 5D Mark IV Review - One Year Later

Coming from a R6 and R5 owner; give me a 5D Mark IV and I'll slay all day long on that camera in both photo and video. Add speed lights and off camera flash units and its beyond belief what can be accomplished with that camera. Its still one of the best cameras ever made and will continue to be one of the best cameras ever made, for the working professional.

My 5DIV is my go to professional camera. I have other choices, but I always seem to grab it. Why? The controls are so logical, and I know it is reliable. I agree that in today's time any reasonable camera can take awesome photos. You could do professional work with an entry level DSLR or mirrorless camera. In fact, I did that in the recent past as I needed to have a very small and nimble camera for an extended job that had me climbing ladders and going all sorts of other gymnastics. The basic small camera (a Panasonic 43) did the job, but it was pretty tired when the 6 month project ended. In fact, it took a tiny tumble and the lens busted. That would not happen with a 5D. There will always be newer cameras with better specs, but cameras from over 10 years ago can still take amazing photos in the right hands.

I've been shooting with a 5dmkiv for the last 2 years. Came from a 7dmkii (witch i still use a lot) and i simply love it. For landscape, astro or events it's a whole new level. Sure it shows its age when comparing to the new eye af, frames per sec and video, but as a stills quality camera it is comparable to all the new top mirrorless cameras out there.

@@johnthomas3941 If you're buying it it used just go for it. If you're getting it new, well the r6 mkII's price will make it a better option. but in terms of image quality you can't go wrong. The body quality.... IT'S A FREAKIN' TANK! 😃

For the mark iv, what's the highest iso you have used in low light without doing editing? I do school events indoors for my son's school, special needs, low lights and many children are sensitive to flash.

@@julianadelgado6454 well you can do well with 3200 without editing for sure. Try to use the fastest lens you got and you'll be ok. If you use some sort of noise reduction software i'd say iso 6400 or even 10k is ok

In my humble opinion you should purchase the R6 II or R6. A good used 5D MK IV can run you from $900 to $1,800. Go mirrorless and get an EF to RF adapter for your older EF/EF-S lenses. The R6’s autofocus is a beast even on EF glass.

I use this camera for video a lot actually, but I do agree that there are better options for video in the current market. I have it as my main camera for setting down and talking to camera videos. One correction I will give you is that you CAN shoot 4K to an SD Card, UHS-1. It's got to be a generally fast card, like a sandisk extreme pro, but it works. I mostly film 4K to those cards on the 5D Mark IV.

Just had a week long event I was hired for and used this camera the entire time and I must say, it was an amazing experience! Love that I took the plunge and bought this camera. Also, video footage was pretty good for what I was going for so no complaints there.

the one reason I plan to leave 5D behind is the auto focus and limited focus points. It just cannot compare to the R5. The video you can get out of it is pretty top--- if you know what you are doing. But better exists, but if you do not have better you will get a 10/10 job just with more work. I have C-log and it is pretty sick. What I will miss real bad if and when I upgrade is the WEIGHT. I am so familiar with DSLr and weight means pro in my mind. Those R5 feel and look like toys.

That is one dslr I will never sell, I love this camera!! And…I own the R5ii and the R3, the R3 I absolutely love but the Canon 5d mark iv has a magic to the photos that mirrorless can’t come close to duplicating.

For those looking to pick one up, definitely get one with canon C-Log. Today's faster computer's eat through the 4K footage and Canon C-Log is really good and af is pretty reliable. If you need a video camera for the occasional shoot or KZbin 4K this is a good choice.

With the Canon 5d mkiv i don't need to reach for my reading glasses to use it, with mirrorless i need to use reading glasses to see the screen. which is very inconvenient. I hardly ever use the video function on the 5D mkiv, only tend to use the centre focus point and the battery life is great.

Well I'm trying to go the opposite way ;) Owning a R8 and a R7 I have the strong desire to buy a used eos 5d mark iv (or even a Mark III) just for the joy of looking on the object I wanna shoot thru the viewfinder and the lens. I like the mirrorless cameras, but to be honest, they have tons of features I will never use. E.g. the simple task of making flash photography on the r8 could result in a 5 minute look into the manual - whereas with "old-style" camera you don't run into those problems. Sure I will keep my mirrorless canons, but I'm tempted to go a bit back in time - simply to slow down and enjoy.

Headshot photographer. I shoot with a canon 5d classic. And 85mm (1.8) and 50mm (1.4) I’m a hobbyist but at this stage turn work down. I don’t charge much. But I’ve managed to work around the country and make a lot of people happy. Learn how to use what you have. Not thinking I need this or that to get good photos.

Sure! I'll most likely do a video on my lenses, but for Greece I used a 24-105 Canon L IS USM Lens. For weddings I use a 28-70 f2.8 Canon L II USM and 35mm and 85mm prime lenses.

Hi Brian, I need an advice… I have Canon 550D (I’m not a professional photographer) and I would like to make an upgrade I was thinking about Canon 90D but it’s not full frame thought the price is good. Then I also thought about 5D as I already tried this camera. I want to do pet photography mostly and landscape. The only thing is stopping me is the price of the camera +it’s quite heavy, also it looks like future is with mirrorless. Tell me what should I get? Btw I like your cat 🥰

As the owner of a 90D for what you want to photograph, it’s the camera for you. You do have to be careful with what glass you put on it but it’s and excellent camera. The 4k video is better than the 5D MK IV. That being said, the 5D MK IV is no joke either. Anyway, in sunlight and well lit areas, the 90D gets the job done on that crop sensor. For low light, bring light, use the flash, watch your IOS settings.
