Canon 650D/ Rebel T4i in 2022? A review and lens suggestions from a pro photographer

I have been using Canon cameras professional for nearly thirty years. In this video I give my thoughts on the ten year old EOS 650d, I talk about some of the good and bad points, give a comparison against a full frame 5d mark IV and talk through some of the lens possibilities on the second hand market.

The 650/T4i is a very capable camera. As a photojournalist, I've won national photography awards with it. The 18-55 kit lens works well, although it isn't well suited for low light, but with a 50mm STM low light is not a problem. The 55-250 STM renders colour well. It does struggle to focus in Live View at 250mm, but that's my only complaint. Its zoom range and light weight make it a good choice if you don't want to carry around a 70-200 f2.8. As for the 10-18, the colours are amazing.

I have an eos 650d / t4i - thought it was pretty good but so many years later figured it to be obsolete, and my passion dwindled from the inability to purchase a more professional camera - but you've renewed my interest in it, considering I don't have the funds to upgrade to anything special - but I just might be able to swing a couple new lens's for my T4i and get the ball rolling again. I was asked about one of the older Canon dslrs recently, for a soon to be photography student, and was amazed to find it had a 24mp sensor, even wifi built-in I think, for about £200. Incredible value. I bought the 18-55mm 'kit lens' as a neat little lens which I've found very handy for 'social page' type pics at events where I don't want to have a big 24-70 in people's faces, it's plenty sharp enough. The 50mm f1.8 STM I bought in a hurry when I needed a 50 for a magazine portrait shoot. Great lens, amazing for £100 new, pics used full page in a glossy mag'. And I got the 55-250mm as a lightweight long lens for shooting the odd cricket match, when frankly I couldn't be arsed carrying a 300mm f2.8! Did the job just fine. I still have all these 'cheap' lenses which might get used on my R5, with the RF adaptor. Gear is what you make it, not necessarily what you pay for it... Merry Christmas!

The 550D/Rebel T2i was my first camera I bought used on Craigslist with the kit lens, 50 mm f/1.8, and 55-250 mm (all for $100!!). I knew nothing about DSLRs or photography and never became a fan of the kit lens, but the 50 1.8 in particular really opened my mind to the possibilities of photography. Boy am I glad that was in the bag. I was looking back and reediting some of the photos I took with that combo recently and was surprised how good some of them were.

Great, practical down to earth advice. I used to have the 550D (never used a 650D) as a back up to my 7D and couldn't agree more as to it's capabilites. I gradually built up to my current gear and, as always for me, the older gear has to help fund the cost of the upgrade so it was sold. However, I recently needed a camera for a wildlife camera trap I am constructing and my immediate thought was for a used 550D with kit lens. As you said, the images from that camera are very good quality indeed and to my mind they always seemed to require less PP than the more 'pro level' cameras. The great thing about these cameras are that they make photography (particularly wildlife and sports) much more accessible to those with little cash to throw around. Nowadays, an APSC body coupled with say a Sigma 150-600 mm lens will get you wildlife images that were previously only in the range of very highly expensive gear.

A crop body with one of those long zooms would be incredible in the right hands! Good Lord! I used to lump around one of the big old 600mm F4 lenses back in the days of film. Very heavy and required a monopod to have half a chance of holding it steady! I agree about less PP required for some of these simpler cameras. I am currently using an R5 and it’s tricky to get the files right in Lightroom.. actually it’s a real pain considering the price of the damn thing!

I have had the t4i for 10 years and have shot numerous video projects with it. It produces great results. I have other alternatives, but I always liked the t4i for those quick videos without a lot of fuss. I am going to mess around with loading the latest Magic Lantern build into it. As for a lens, I always liked the Canon 15-85mm EFS. It's great for interviews and tight situations. It's very versatile.

Great video as usual.. it really takes the expense out of photography when considering what cameras and kit costs. I’ve got a 750D and it’s a great camera. The 55-250mm is a great lens too. But what the cheaper lenses might lack in sharpness editing makes up for that.. Composition is the thing thats we’re the skill is..!! Keep it real..!!

I have a 650D that I bought new, along with most of the lenses you talk about here (I don't have the long prime lens, sadly - I do have the 10-18 and 55-250 and they're both great lenses). I'm loving your videos and all the information and your delivery. I had the 760d and like you mentioned regarding the 650d it was full of modern features which have found their way into professional bodies. The only reason I don't still have it is because I really wanted to go full frame and so exchanged for the 5d mkii but would have kept the 760d if I could because of all the possibilities you have mentioned in your video. I have the 85mm 1.8 prime and it has been a fantastic lens for me. Currently my workhorse lens is a 28-135 3.5/5.6 which I got with an old 450d and both I used on the 760d and very happy with the results.

Nice video Roy! I had the 600D, I used for photo with a nifty fifty and for YT with the cheap 10-18, was great. I sold it because I had the 5D2, bought the expensive 16-35 f4 and realized for me, the cheap t3i was enough! although I love the 5D2, the 600d flip screen and old af was usefull. I mean, get rid of the kit lense and for the money, amazing lightweight small cameras you can take with you without fear travelling, etc. Regards from Valencia:)

Excellent video, great combination of enthusiasm and knowledge. For quite a while, I had a Canon EOS 550d, with a 10-18mm, 18-55mm and 55-250mm. The 10-18mm is a really great lens, and fantastic value for money, and the longer zoom is also very capable. Even the cheapo kit lens is capable of great results when used well. I have since moved on to full frame cameras, with some pretty expensive lenses, not because I need to, but really just as an indulgence for myself. I really like the full frame kit, but I know I could get almost all I might need from my old set up. Now I find myself in the position of advising my 19 year old daughter on a good, cost effective set up for her. She's tiny, with small hands, and she struggles with my full frame kit. So what did I do? I bought her a 650d. I'm sure she'll love it, and be able to take great pics with it.

I would certainly keep a look out for a 10-18 from Canon or the Sigma wide I mentioned. A nifty fifty would be a good cost effective addition too

To match the focal range of Canon aps-c lenses in a larger format, is indeed expensive. I sold a 550D with 10-18, 18-55, grip, batteries and accessories in 2018, and miss them frankly. I couldn't bring myself to part with 24mm and 40mm pancake primes (the latter also fits full frame), even though I have nothing to hang them on currently. The latest 850D is off the pace compared to the competition and relatively expensive, but second hand the Rebels are great value.

I totally agree. The value of these older cameras and lenses is incredible. A full kit can cost less than a big memory card for one of the new mirrorless cameras.

Hi after owning my camera since 2012 and only using it a few times it’s been boxed up and put away until we recently moved to a new house. I came across it again and decided to look into using it more and came across your video. Wow you have renewed my interest in using the camera again and being a beginner your video has been really helpful in looking at the different lenses available for different types of photos. Hi Darren, I have a Sigma 18-300 and did have a Sigma 150-500 (but on a cropped body multiple both numbers by 1.6 = about 220-800mm) the 18-300 is really good for holidays where 1 lens can do just about anything and I love it. The 150-500 I have used for birds and aircraft and have had some cracking shots. Newer is a 150-600 both in contemport and sport versions (sport version weighs a ton) but Sigma also do a 60-600 btw. The 150-xxx are anywhere between £350-£1200 but you can get them as a kit with a 1.4 teleconverter. Look at 2nd hand especially MBP, LCE, Park or Wex as they will give a rating to the lens and give a warranty but possibly a little more expensive but more piece of mind.

Stick magic lantern on there with the different crop modes , resolutions and features such as dual iso and focus peaking and youd have a 'beast' on your hands.Imagine the 70-300mm with apsc sensor equivalent of around 500mm cropped in at 1.5 x then producing a 750mm equivalent 😁

Buy a 24mm ef-s stm pancake lens. It makes a great walk-around street lens. It is super sharp and great value. It works superbly on my 600d and my current 77d.

Fixing that 650 may be easy to do - put a fully charged battery in it. Connect it via USB to any laptop. Try turning the camera on while it is connected and it should/may work - I had this problem with a 5D mkIII

Thanks for the info. I recently bought a used 650d with a kit lense and the same 85 1.8 you have. It's my first real camera. Until recently, I've just done mountain bike videos. GoPro's work great for that. I've been asked to film a video for one of my buddies business and the GoPro isn't really a great look. I bought the 650d for video. It was the best deal I could find at the moment. I'm filming indoors in a garage. I don't have much light to work with. The kit lense is to dark. The 85 works great when at 1.8, but I have to be real far away to have anything but a close up, and the focus is very unforgiving. When the subjects move more than a foot, they go out of focus, and if I leave the auto focus on, when they move, the lense goes through all it's range to refocus. Do you have any tips on how to get the auto focus to work better? I don't have money for any lights right now. Thanks for the vid, I learned a few things about my Camara.

Thanks! coming from a go pro to a DSLR with an 85mm 1.8 is a big jump for video! Even on the very latest cameras nailing focus with an 85 1.8 when recording video is going to be very tricky even with the latest AF. especially in low light...Its because there is such a fine slither of the subject in focus when shooting wide open. My advice would be try manual focus and keep your subjects still! (I manually focus probably 90% of my video work) if this is not possible then you will need a wider lens where you will have much more depth of field. You do not have to spend a fortune on lighting by the way. There are a few cheaper options out there these days. even just buying higher wattage light bulbs will help. Hope this helps. Its going to be a steep learning curve. Video with a DSLR is brilliant and cinematic but it is not easy. its a donkey that kicks! RR

I think it would be fun to travel around and tell other people's stories. I've always liked what Mike Rowe did with dirty jobs. To do this, I'm also having to learn to edit. I have a buddy building a 1200 HP luxury RV that will be faster than a mustang. He's got a few sponsor and wants to do a video series about the build and the adventur that comes after . We shot a test episode for the sponsors. We took it all the way through to the end of production so we could all see what this is all about. We shot the live footage at 3am lol. @@bikeradam it’s a great video man! You have done a brilliant job.. go pro cameras are pretty amazing little cameras and you have achieved so much with this basic gear. I personally find that go pro footage cuts quite well with DSLR footage and the two together can be an awesome way to tell stories. Use the go pro for the wide stuff and the DSLR for B roll cut aways.. (or until it goes out off focus! Then cut back to the go pro..) eases the eyes from the constant go pro fish eye thing! With your talent you will be huge in no time! Remember me when your rich and famous! RR

It's a more cinematic look. The lighting is more dramatic. I shot everything from three distances. It's looking good as I load it into the editor. I can't wait to get good at this. Hi Roy! Amazing video. I’m a beginner photographer and use a 600D and I was also blown away by the quality of the images, the grain is manageable up to 3200. 6400 is alright but you can’t push the raw file too much (not more than half a stop) otherwise the image is way to grainy, and it’s jus black and white territory. I’ve got a 28mm f1.8, great lens and good focal length on crop you should check it out. Keep up the brilliant work!

I hope you will forgive a somewhat extended response, but you asked about our experiences, so here you go! I got a couple of EOS 650D (Rebel T4i) bodies around 2013 as part of a deal. They were virtually new. I tried them out for fun and was impressed by their performance in terms of value of money compared to my professional gear - I was shooting then with EOS 5DIII, 7D and some 60D's. The 60D is actually a GREAT starter cameras these days with all the controls of the pro units and some better weather resistance. The 650D's, while lower end, were later, and so had about the same performance (without the control ring and top LCD) as the 60D units. Yep, the lack of control ring took a little acclimatization but you soon get used to it - I used it for EV compensation. Having a flip screen is great for protecting the LCD when not in use, and although I don't shoot video, or use the touch screen, they are great features. I used these cameras for some casual trips when I didn't want to carry my more expensive and heavier gear and they are fun cameras to use. I recommend the following lenses to give a decent range of focal lengths and Fields of View: Canon EOS 15-85mm IS USM f/3.5-5.6 - equivalent FoV 24-135mm, brilliant lens, has been called the 'pseudo L' lens for its performance Canon EOS 17-55mm IS USM f/2.8 - equivalent FoV 27-88mm - this is a heavy beast but with a constant f/2.8 aperture is a great lens Canon EF-S 18-135 IS STM or USM - equivalent FoV 27-216mm - the USM is newer but not much difference optically Canon EF18-55 IS STM and the 55-250 IS STM - several versions of these, the STM units are best. Canon EF 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 IS USM MkI or II - equivalent FoV 112-480mm. There are three versions of this lens and they are all good. They are EF lenses, so they can be used on FF cameras as well. Stay away from the EF 75-300 models, they are arguably Canon's worst. I have sold very little gear over the years and I still shoot with these units, and they can still render great results!

I started with the 400D and kept to APS-C and have ff L lenses and can agree the 15-85 is practically L with no red ring or pro weather sealing. Love it along with the 17-55 & 10-22. Roy has sold me on the 300L & 70-300L and I’m on the patient hunt for good copies. Really enjoy these throw back videos

So i have a question if i put 50mm full frame lens on this camera its gonna looks like 80mm or so because of the multiplier i get that all BUT if i put 50mm ef-s lens made for this sensor is it gonna be true 50mm or does the multiplier still apply? It might seem logical but i want to make shure and i cant find anything to confirm this.

You are right. No multiplier for EF-S lenses. They are built for crop sensor cameras. You get what’s writing on the side of the Efs lens. It’s a complicated system! Good luck with it all! RR

@@RoyRiley I’m sorry but this is incorrect. The focal length of a crop OR full frame lenses is absolute. It takes no consideration of the sensor size. Even crop sensor lenses such as ef-s must have the same 1.6x math applied to get the full frame equivalent focal length.

It might be worth getting one to have it converted for infrared photos. EF-S lenses are a bit deeper at the body end and therefore don't fit full frame cameras.

You forgot to multiply the crop by the aperture with the 85mm f1.8 which becomes a 136mm f2.8. You must always multiply both the focal length as well as the aperture to get a full-frame equivalent figure.

Thanks Adrian. Interesting one! I completely agree regarding the focal length but am slightly unsure about what you mean regarding the aperture.. For example with the 85 1.8 Are you suggesting the lens will not operate at f1.8 and will become a f2.8 maximum aperture lens or that the depth of field / bokeh will be different to how F1.8 would appear on a full frame body?? now, I am no expert with crop sensors so I wonder if you could explain in more detail please??? I guess even though the amount of glass is the same, the sensor is smaller so less light gets to it??? The reason I came to my conclusion is when I stick my 85mm F1.8 on my crop sensor body it still shoots at F1.8 and the exposures perfectly match a full frame body shot at the same manually set ISO, shutter speed and aperture. I understand that the depth of field will be different because of the sensor size and density. For a real world example. Shooting a night time football match under flood lit conditions ( a situation I have been in many times!) an external light meter is used to figure out that the light reading at 800 ISO is 500th of a second at F1.8. Just for the sake of the example, I am using an 85mm F1.8 on a crop body and another 85mm F1.8 on a full frame body.. both manually set to ISO 800 with a shutter speed of 500th and an aperture of F1.8 are you saying the crop sensor body would not allow me to shoot at f1.8 or that it would allow me to shoot at F1.8 but the image would be one stop under exposed or that the lens would allow me to shoot at f1.8 and the exposure would match the FF body combo but the bokeh would be different ? Obviously the magnification of the crop body sensor would show the players to be a little closer! Thanks for your help with this because its a technical issue and I am more of a feet on the ground photographer who tends to steer clear of this kind of thing! All the very best. RR

@@RoyRiley Hello Roy, thanks for the reply. Crop factor maths can be a little brain battering to get your head around, it took me a while to understand it, so you not being up to speed with it is no surprise at all. Not wishing to plug another "KZbinr" but this is a good video to help with what is going on. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGbdf2mEi91gnrs If you think that this is bad, just wait until you get into "Total light gathered" which is the crop factor squared! It's then possible to get (depending on lens) the same image across crop and full-frame bodys, or even work out for medium and large format, or if you get really techie, you can work out for camera phone sensors! which is probably going just a little bit too far!! In short, if you don't multiply both the focal length by the crop as well as the aperture you are breaking math. I really hope that this helps?

@@RoyRiley In your example, the answer would be "the lens would allow me to shoot at f1.8 and the exposure would match the FF body combo but the bokeh would be different", except the bokeh _in the same field of view_ actually wouldn't be different (that is, if you compared the APS-C image with an equivalently cropped area of the FF camera, the images would look the same). All that would differ in your example would be the field of view. Now, if you wanted to have the same field of view on each camera, and so used a 135mm full-frame lens on your FF, the resulting images would have the same field of view but now the bokeh would look different (more out of focus on the FF). To get the same exposure, the aperture would still be at f/1.8 on the 135mm lens. By the way, shout out to the Canon 100D, which is a brilliant little (tiny!) camera (still the smallest DSLR that has ever been made, and will probably remain that way). It has an 18MP sensor and produces lovely images. The 5D mkIII is my workhorse, but the 100D with one of the wider STM lenses (the 24mm or 40mm) is miniature (it's actually ridiculous), fits in a jacket pocket, and weighs nothing. For trips to the hills, that's always the one I take. They're very cheap these days too! Easy to find for less than 150 quid with the third gen 18-55 kit lens, which is actually great glass!

All in the pipeline man! I am not a huge fan of big heavy glass any more. I lugged that old Mk1 600mm around the world with me in a flightcase for a while and that really turned me off.. The 500mm F4 IS is probably the best there is for full frame in my opinion but then the 100-400 mk2 is pretty superb. I have yet to try one of the new RF 600 or 800mm lenses. Might be interesting!

@@RoyRiley those new 400/2.8 & 600/4 weight just over 6 pounds. The RF lens are the same except for the mount. Sony is coming out with a 400/2.8 with an internal 1.4 converter. No specs yet.

Hi Vishnu. Starting at the wide end. I have found the sigma 10-20 mentioned in this video very good but also one cannot exclude the very good Canon 10-20 stm. I would also include the 18-55stm kit lens and then the 55-250stm all from Canon. I believe these lenses offer a good combination of price / image quality / flexibility. I would also recommend a canon 50mm f1.8 for portraits and low light. Probably the stm version if budget allows if not the Mk2 is fine but the af is a bit noisy. For long telephony the canon 309mm F4 is a beast as is the 400mm 5.6.. there are also a wide range of tele zooms out there if that peaks your interest. Hope this helps.. love to you all in Kerala. I still have my SL-1 bought online for $350.00 all white body and lens (pleasantly surprised) with the 18-55 kit . Digital cameras immediately made cable releases worthless , reducing the ease of extended hours long photography . In-camera double exposures are only available on the more expensive models . What if a camera dedicated just for that feature came out ? It's the convenience of the local photo lab I really miss where I dropped off my B&W film and had perfectly developed negatives with a contact sheet that is all but obsolete now . .Perhaps some labs exclusively rely on mail only . I still haven't seen digital prints come close to what I produced in the darkroom using Panatomic-X and Oriental Seagull paper . This video is important in how the best equipment doesn't improve the quality of creativity that interprets the subjective scene . Thanks for the emphasis on basics.
