I have been shooting professional assignments with the Canon 5d Mark IV Full Frame DSLR since 2017. In this video I discuss my experiences and opinions of this camera. I talk through the various elements of the camera and show some examples of my work taken with the 5d mark 4. I touch on how it stacks up against more recent technology and how it performs in this day and age.

Great points. I've seen photos which were taken in the 1940s and 1950s which are remarkable...and they were taken without all of today's tech. Knowledge of photography is clearly more important than having the latest gear.

Fantastic videos, really enjoy your style and knowledge. I've had a 5D MKII for 10+ years and have gone through the thought process and research of updating my camera body. I understand most are going to mirrorless but for what I need (and the cost difference) I've bought a 5D MKIV and am looking forward to watching the rest of your videos.

Thanks Russ. This week I found myself on a shoot with the latest canon R cameras, a bunch of Sony gear and even had a play with the latest LUMIX GH6. While all those cameras had something unique and interesting to offer I still think the 5d4 has the ability to jump up Jackie Cham style and roundhouse kick the crap out of the lot of them! Robust, reliable, highly capable. In the right hands it’s still very brilliant.

Hi Roy, I loved the video and always find your content interesting and informative. I have been wanting the mark iv for a while now and have read a lot of reviews etc but it's always great to actually hear someone talking about it. I shoot a variety of subjects with my mark ii but the trickest is when my wife is performing as a dancer often in tricky lighting conditions. I can get some good images from the mkii but I know the mkiv would help produce more keepers with better high ISO capabilities, faster shutter speed, 30mp etc under those conditions. I love the canon system and having looked at other options cannot see myself changing. Also a lovely, thoughtful way to end the video and I'm sure everybody feels the same. There is too much nastiness and horror in the world and one aspect of photography for me personally is the peace I feel producing the finished images. Let's hope for more peace very soon.

Lovely message. Thanks Sean. Don’t wish to confuse things but in the interest of balance It might be worth you having a look at the R cameras. Not to take anything away from the 5d range but the AF on those mirrorless cameras is rather amazing and for dance you might see some benefit. I know it’s more money and the lenses are very pricey but might be worth a look at least.

Wow thanks Roy. I was looking at one a week ago and after watching your review here I wish now I would have picked it up. I only have one full frame. The Canon 5D Mark II. The rest I have are crop sensor. I think I'm going to have to invest in a mark 4. The last I looked at one mind you low shutter count I think the shutter count was just under 6,000. And they wanted $1,900 for it. Oh different subject I'm really enjoying that ef300 millimeter it does a wonderful job. Thank you sir keep up the good work I really enjoy watching your videos your advice is priceless!

Great video, Roy! Enjoyed it very much. I have two 5D IVs and they’ve been my daily workhorses as a full-time pro shooting architecture and maritime/sailing. I’ve so far resisted migrating to the R5 because I’m one of the ten people in the world who really cares about having geotagged files. The 6D and 5DIV have GPS (with the option to turn it off for battery savings) and I find it such a useful feature that I’ll wait for it to hopefully re-emerge in the R1 (the R, R3, R5, and R6 do not have it). Until then, I’m definitely not being held back continuing with my current system. This is my favorite camera I’ve ever shot with and honestly it’s so familiar to me, I don’t have any sense of urgency to change it up just to keep up with the latest gear. These are such solid builds and are such a pleasure to use, I’m totally happy with this kit for another couple years to come.

Thanks for the video, Roy I couldn't agree more. I have a 5DIV (and a III) and also an R6 among a number of cameras. I'm an enthusiast who does professional work when asked to (it is not my main gig), and I find that I usually go straight to the 5DIV when I do jobs. Why? I have the lenses for the camera and I'm very familiar with the controls. I also know that the camera won't fail me when stressed. When I'm doing a real job I want to concentrate on the situation and I don't want to have to google how to change a camera setting. The R6 is fantastic and it is more advanced than the 5DIV in many aspects. However, I can't say that the photos look any better. I don't shoot wildlife or professional sports and the 5D's focusing capabilities and speed are more than what I need. All too often I have bought a new camera because I was seduced by an influencer who gushed covered the "amazing ISO performance" or the "fantastic autofocus" only to find the improvement marginal or not needed by me. My best photos are not camera specific, they are situation specific.

A very fine overview of the 5d mk4, which in many ways is also applicable to other Canon DSLRs. As a very long time Nikon user who works for a Canon equipped agency, I've found the Canons to be tough as old boots, no wonder Canon used to make it awkward to find the shutter count! Using the 7d & 7dmkii, I found the dynamic range to be what I got from Nikons 10 years ago, so I was unimpressed there. You're quite right that there's no need for mega-megapixel sensors, 30mp is more than enough for anything. The R5 is amazing, but doesn't feel like it has the DSLR build quality...time will tell. And yes the RF lenses are sharper than the EFs (though I think I might have been using kit that would benefited from a service...), so using an EF lens on an R5 via the adaptor won't look 'better', though the focus will be totally spot on, being mirrorless AF. What I don't like about the RF lenses is they are huge, a diameter much bigger than my hand, so gripping lenses while changing can be nerve-wracking..! And I've always shot jpeg, much to the derision/shock of social media. RAW is a backup file. Quite simply I shot with film for so long, I always aim to get the exposure right in-camera, no RAW tweaking, and never need big file sizes. Mind you 128mb jpeg from the R5 is more than plenty. Sorry for the rambling comment...!
@RoyRiley
@RoyRiley 2 жыл бұрын
Cheers Andrew! Good to hear from you. Interesting to hear what you say about the RF lenses. I will most likely go down that road at some point.. just not sure when! 128mb Jpeg is pretty incredible! Makes me wonder where it will ever stop. I seem to remember many years ago, when we first stated scanning negs and sending from jobs with those old Nokia mobiles we would try to keep the files quite small maybe a couple of hundred K’s compressed so they didn’t take hours to send. Crazy changes we have seen. Hope you are keeping well. R

@opotopo1
@opotopo1 2 жыл бұрын
@@RoyRiley Thanks Roy. I know what you mean about the 'distancing' effect. Its more to do with my eyes changing as I get older I think. An EVF is like looking at a (mini) TV screen and seems to make my eyes far more tired than an OVF does. Just watched your Leica film also. Like you, I've wanted to try an M for years and have recently bought one. It definitely is a more 'involved' experience! Happy photo-ing (as my wife calls it). Cheers Simon

Always many tx for your pro, smart and sincere videos about « vintage » canon gear. I have professionally used the original 5D (3 or 4 years), the 5D II (12 years) and now the 5D IV (1,5 year) and I am more than happy with the latest! The extra resolution allowed me to sell my tilt-shift lens and rely on an 11-24mm with software correction instead for architectural photography and virtual tours. However, the 5DmkIV HDR function is only available in JPEG, totally unusable, compared to what we can achieve with Photoshop or even lightroom… I love the GPS feature but i reckon it drains the battery… I find files usable up to 3200 iso, double what it was with the 5D II and 4 times what it was with the original 5D
@RoyRiley
@RoyRiley 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this. You are right about the HDR jpeg thing. Not ideal. I very rarely use it, relying on the dynamic range of the RAW file most of the time. There was one occasion where I was working in really tricky challenging light conditions that were constantly changing. I tried everything but was struggling like crazy. I had a brain wave to try the HDR setting and it basically nailed it pretty well and spat out a JPEG that looked great! More last stop for the desperate than smart technique but it got me out of a hole.

I really appreciate reviews from people who have real world experience. I'm selling my beloved motorcycle, and plan to buy my second new camera in 25 years with the money (I usually buy good used cameras). I was looking at maybe the R5, but after seeing this, the 5d Mark IV will more than suit my needs, plus I can upgrade my lenses with the money I save over the R5. I have a 90D (the first new camera I ever bought), a GoPro, and a Samsung S23 Ultra for video. I just want something that excels at still photographs that is durable. I REALLY wish camera manufacturers would come out with a basic, bare bones still camera, without video, that is simple an durable. My first camera I shot weddings with was a Minolta X-700....I miss those days. Thanks for posting!!

1080p works fine for me. I'm starting to shoot more video in Manual Mode and photo's of course in AP. Purchased new in 2021, has C-Log but haven't used it yet. Since picking up a 17-40mm lens this year ($500 new), that's what I've been using 90% of the time. I shoot landscape mostly. Haven't used a tripod once this year, went fully handheld as a lot of shots I do are extreme and I like to shoot and run. As far as the Zacuto Viewfinder, It's always in my backpack. Never seen anyone else using one of these. It's a game changer!

I was for some time looking at R5 / R6 II, but as most of my schoots are done from tripod (real estate, virtual tours), new AI and focus functions doesnt play so big role in my workflow. So happy to stay with these old king for next year (no matter if 5D4 or 5DSR), both are last big models :) which will be here for maybe next decade until they die.

Your work emits energy, inspiration, story telling, and beauty. Please keep up the good work! Could you make some videos of your photos sometimes? What you said there Roy, is very much how I feel and think. At the end you need to know those functions of the camera that you do use very well, so they don't become an issue on the shoot. Doing this seamlessly takes a time. Any change in system starts another learning curve, if it fosters creativity in your own work, not that I experienced it. I use they 5D Mark IV and a 7D Mark II each for the purpose it is best for and these will remain the cameras of choice for years to come. The way both function is very similar, if not the same. Plus but of course it’s the lenses. This is a point that is largely underestimated. Truth is that each and everyone of them add to complexity. Going to mirrorless means, you have to change all of it. I feel this is to much for most of us. Let them talk marketing and get the work done. (onemoresubby) Roland

I say this on every message board for anyone who thinks I must have the newest version etc. I've shot semi professionally as a headshot and sports photographer for a long time. It's been a great supplemental income and was never something I relied on or looked for, but just kept happening because one person showed a headshot to another and so on. For the last, I think 7 years, I shot on a Canon 5d classic. I use an 85mm lens (1.8) and a 50mm lens (1.4) All my stuff has been paid for from photoshoots well over a dozen times. I would like a better autofocus system, better rear screen and better low light would be very welcome. That said, you have to know how to use what you have, not think that the reason the photos aren't good, is because you haven't spent enough. At some point, I'll get the Mark IV. It's around $800-$900 now. And I'll use it on and off for a decade. Especially as people sell off their lens collections. But what you have, works. You just have to figure out how to use it.

The canon 70D was the one of the first canon cameras that has a touchscreen and Wi-Fi. I own the 70d I really like the Wi-Fi feature as I can easily give the photo to someone after I shoot them during events. This camera in the same way has been a workhorse like a 5d to me I have shot a lot of random stuff (from portraits to astrophotography) and it produces good images. Glad I recently found your channel, Roy. And I couldn't resist a video on the 5Dmk4! Have used one for several years. I think Canon is making a serious mistake in not building a 5Dmk5 along side the mirrorless models, which I have no interest in. Just add a flip screen and possibly a slightly larger sensor (though I'd buy it just for the screen) and they'd be satisfying many in their traditional slr customer base. Forcing customers to go to mirrorless is, imo, the wrong approach to marketing. Leaving money on the table, as they say. Good channel here, straightforward approach. I upgraded from a 5d MkII recently to a 5d MkIV simply because it was the next best option to get all my awesome EF-L lenses on a body that has AI Servo autofocus video. 1080 P at 60fps will do just fine for me. I prefer a softer cinematic quality of images anyway.

Great review, it tickles me pink in the press or bias reviews how a camera can be the Holy grail, then next year obsolete. Rubbish, the 5d4 is the last stop gap to the top large camera bodies. It's build and functionality is equally as good as any mirrorless, all cameras take slightly different tones in a photo, but that doesn't mean it's old hat. Too many are tempted by flashy sales techniques, however a top camera seller. No names, I asked when buying this last year do I go with this or mirrorless, and the guy spoke in a quite voice and told me 10 reasons why to go with the 5. Main thing like phones. They always want you to buy the latest, and make you feel like you can't survive without it. Listen to sence and use your money more wisely.

Hi Roy.Great video. I shoot both video and photography. For stills I will always stick to the Mark 4 - for the video I need RAW - greater stops - which leads me to either get the BMPCC4k or even the RED Komodo, BUT, coming from a film background the DSLR vs mirrorless has a feeling of film vs HDR. I prefer a slightly softer look vs the complete sharp HDR look, and that's probably one of the main reasons for me NOT to switch over to the mirrorless route. I find it to be way more cinematic than the complete overall sharpness of the mirrorless. Just a matter of preference I suppose.

I’m new to higher quality cameras as I’ve always used crop sensor bodies and I’ve been kind of all over the map with my search. Currently, I own a 5DM2 and an EOS-R. I really wanted the 5DM4 but it is still $1000 more than the EOS-R so I saved the money. But, even though I’m getting used to the R, I continue to wonder if I’d find the 5DM4 more to my liking. The R produces better images than the M2 I have but the ease of use the 5DM2 provides me still has me wondering if I made the correct decision. Not owning any of the RF glass further makes me second guess my decision. The EF glass works fine on the R but man, I don’t know. Maybe when Canon pushes the price of the new 5DM4’s down to get rid of them, I’ll pick one up. Or in the interim, maybe I’ll make friends with the R!

RR, don’t forget about the Canon T-90 from 1984ish. This was like a spaceship landing next to a bi-plane. I believe this camera started the now familiar ergonomics used since. I used two bodies plus L lenses at a daily newspaper, much to the consternation and muffled schoolboy giggles of my peers. Roll on a few short years and all you can see at press events are Canon EOS 1’s and then EOS 1D’s and the rest is history until Nikon ate their porridge and launched the D3.

I saw where they said that even with the overheating, locking up, the Canon R6 is much better and it is the future, the only feature I like with it is the eye tracking, so I am on the fence about returning this Mark 1V for the Canon EOS R6 mark 11, I do a lot of wildlife photography (mostly birding in flight) , some portrait, lots of Landscape and seascapes. Hi Adam, Really it comes down to what you shoot, IBIS is an amazing piece of technology but it does not account for subject movement so if for example you are shooting a person who might move a little then you will still get some blur.. this is where old school rules still help.. using a shutter speed fast enough to freeze the action rather than depending on IS. Having owned the 5D 2,3,4 and now the R5 for many paid jobs I go with the MK 4 because the optical view finder gives me accurate information if I have to go inside a property then outside into the sunlight a few times. When I use the R5 in the same situation the view finder brightness has to be adjusted for the different lighting environment to get an accurate photo, at least that is my experience. If I stay outside or stay inside for the entire job the R5 can get the job done, but when shooting any fast moving subjects the R5 with 12 or 20 fps and eye or regular auto focus is pure shooting heaven. Nothing like it.

Hi Roy, an interesting video and thoughts on the Canon 5D Mark IV. Having used the 5D Mark III and Mark IV extensively I can say they are truly outstanding DSLR cameras especially when paired with Canon's excellent lenses. As you have stated before they are reliable workhorse cameras that simply get the job done. Unfortunately, it was necessary to sell my Canon DSLR cameras to help fund my Canon EOS R5 camera and lenses. I too am interested in the new technological advances as it relates to making my job easier and more efficient. With better autofocus, IBIS, great color, and decent dynamic range the R5 is a remarkable tool. Having used the R5 for close to a year, I can say that with the Canon EF and RF lenses it is the finest photographic tool I have used to date. It's weakness or achilles heel has been with video. Although I've read the latest firmware has addressed some of the overheating issues, time will tell. However, I feel there are better cameras and solutions for hybrid photographers or videographers e.g. Sony a1 and Nikon Z9. Thanks so much for the interesting content from a professional photographer's perspective.

@@RoyRiley I started doing a few weddings, I've now had a few more enquiries so wanted a new main camera that could use the EF lenses I already have, then use the 6D as my second camera, I wanted the duel card slot for security. I have the M50 mirrorless and love it. I can't afford the R5 yet and like you said the RF lenses are very expensive, I looked at getting the EOS R but then it only has one card slot, I'm in a real dilemma. Budget is about £1500. Thanks for your help.

@@RoyRiley I did consider that, then just use the converter for the EF lenses. I thought that maybe a mirrorless and a DSLR at the same time might confuse me, the two different viewfinders etc. Is the R6 as good as the Mk 1V tho?

@@Meatbrish the honest truth is all of the cameras we have mentioned are all very very capable and the choice can often make it almost impossible to make a decision. Just choose one that you can afford and feel comfortable with. Buy it. Shoot with it for a while. See how you feel after that. You can always trade it for something g different if not perfect. Sometimes there is no 100% right answer.

It's a real shame that the RF lenses are so pricey compared with some of the nicer EF glass. I switched to an RF body just for fun and to see what the fuss is about and I commend Canon for making a great product in their bodies, but I feel completely priced out by the RF system glass. I still use a 5DIII from time to time for fun but the R body just beats it in so many ways it's getting harder to pick up the 5D.

I hear you. Deep pockets required! But I guess that’s always been the case to some extent. When I bought my first EOS cameras and L Lenses back in the 90’s it was the most money I could ever imagine spending and was certainly the biggest investment I had ever made and took years to pay back the loan. Best move I ever made though!

@@RoyRiley You're right. Relatively, professional glass is expensive, always has been, and I'm not really complaining. Just upset because I can't justify the amount I'd have to spend to build a serviceable kit with the new stuff 😂

Prices of some really good EF mount L lenses are down a bit, at least on my local buy and sells, from people moving systems when going mirrorless. You could always use the EF adapter. I know it adds a bit of length to the lens but if you love the body that much there's no reason you can't put EF lenses in front of it.
@V3ryM3tal
@V3ryM3tal 2 жыл бұрын
@@thedude808 Absolutely agree with you about the older but still very good EF glass coming down in price. I don't know why, I just don't like adapters. I've used them on several bodies before and just don't like them. It's not that I love the body per se (I actually think the R is ugly and the dials buttons aren't as well placed), more that I feel the advantages some mirrorless bodies offer do actually have legitimate carryover to some of the jobs I do. Anyway, thanks for your reply, I'm really just nitpicking!

@@V3ryM3tal I can't say for sure because I'm still in the ef system, but the canon adapters are supposed to be excellent quality. The only purpose they serve is as a spacer, because the focal plane is so much further ahead on RF bodies. They even have some fancier ones that add the new control ring on the adapter.

It's disingenuous to imply the 5D4 autofocus sucks compared to mirrorless models. Apples and oranges. Obviously, all mirrorless cameras, regardless of manufactuer, have superior focus systems. That's one of the benefits of mirrorless. The only other real benefit of mirrorless, imho, is weight. I don't consider and EVF and exposure preview a +, since I've been shooting since 1981 and much prefer an OVF to laggy, inaccurate EVFs....And, yes, the R6 and R5 EVFs do lag. And if a photographer needs a camera that blasts 30fps, he's doing something wrong. I'm saying this as a photographer who owns 12 DSLRs and 3 Mirrorless bodies. You also admitted (and thank you for that) that you had loaner bodies for a short time.

Thanks for this. Just my opinions based on my experience. in many ways we seem to agree on most of these things but I do not like your use of the word "disingenuous" because it implies that I am either lying or holding back information in some way. Neither of which are true (why would I?) . I am just presenting my opinion based on my experience so far. You have your opinions based on your many years of experience too. I very much respect that. I would love to see some of your work and hear your real world experience of working with Mirrorless and DSLR Cameras. Feel free to share if you so wish.All the very best and thanks for your support. Mirrorless makes producing images easier and is superior regarding video production. For most experienced and skilled photographers transferring towards mirrorless means hardly any advantages in productivity or quality but high investments/expanses. I see no need to rush. The mirrorless hype is marketing driven, not tech driven. Thats why I appreciate reviews like this: down to earth, reasonable and based on professional experience.

@@RoyRiley Saying it's marketing driven is a huge fallacy. I run a production company so my main aim is for my freelancers to get the best images and videos with as little work as possible. Eye auto focusing across most of the view finder is a huge leap and must not be understated. I could teach someone to take good photos in 1-2 days with an R6. The same can't be said for DSLR's The cost of admission to DSLR's in Canon's eco system is very low. The adapter for EF lenses is cerca £100 and works flawlessly. Not to mention IBIS not only for the finished result, but for the ease of use down the viewfinder. Don't let the changing of the market take you. Change with the market...otherwise you'll end up like Kodak who thought old technology was still relevant. I get that people are old school and like things the way they are - but that's not how the world works. The R5 and R6 are brilliant cameras. And if anything wait for the mark 2 versions of these cameras to launch before jumping in. Either way, those DSLR's will soon reach the trash can.
