Canon 70D Review

I'm a bit late to the party, but I just got one of these cameras, and so far I really love it. I had an old Canon XTi, so I wasn't able to do video, and wanted a camera that was going to be good for both photo and video, KZbin in particular. Every KZbinr I spoke to said to pick up a 70D, as it was/had been their workhorse camera on their own channel. Thanks for the in-depth review!

Hey Jared, I am starting photography and am choosing to buy my first DSLR. Right now, the Nikon d5300 looks the most appealing to me although I am not sure that if I continue with photography I will stick with Nikon. Do you think I should go with another camera? I feel like I enjoy the Canon's range of lenses which would be awesome if I continue although I don't feel that I don't necessarily like many of the entry level canon DSLRs. My budget is around $600 as I also want to buy a glidecam because I do a lot of video. Thanks.

Jared -- many say the 70D is great for video but there have been reports of a focusing issue with stills when using the viewfinder (the LCD seems to be fine) with fast lenses at some distance. (See CameraRec Toby's KZbin video and site with his testing). Any sense as to whether this is really a problem?

Just purchased this as an upgrade to my T3i it will be arriving on Sunday and I can't wait. I'm gonna keep my T3i just to have a second body for weddings and other events but I absolutely fell in love with the 70D playing around with it in Best Buy. Additionally for anybody looking as of 12/19/2014 I got the body only for just over $1,100.00 after taxes.

Depends what you're looking for I used to have a D5200 until I lost it but I loved my D5200 its amazing. 1080p video and its great for stills too and pretty affordable. I'm sure it probably is still relevant but since I want a professional/intermediate grade camera I'll probably switch over to Cannon since as of now I have no camera. So i'm going to go with the D7 Mark II or D610.

When it comes to image quality, they're around the same. For more convenience/features, the 70D. If you want to save up few hundred bucks for some good glass, then 60D.

Hi, I'm a beginner and have been shooting with a decent old sony dslr for quite some time. Now I want to have a new dslr that shoots great stills, has a lot of features, and has fair video quality. Is the canon 70D (or 60D) or the nikon D7100 better? The NX30 from samsung is also pretty cool, but i don't know if it even comes near to the performance you will get from the canon or the nikon. My budget is about 1000$

I shot a doc in Europe in January on a 70D with my colleague on his 5D mark 3. Both shoot great video. 70D ended up holding its own against even that camera. 5D mark 3 is slightly better image quality and better in low light/high ISO, but that's not to say the 70D is bad at all. It's my go to vid camera at this point.

huntbot I just recently purchased the 70D to shoot short films, but was recently informed that the camera only records for 30 minutes, is this true. I don't know yet because my SD cards aren't fast enough to record what I'm trying to shoot, but I'm working on that.

MultiAwall 30 minutes per take. Just stop and start and you get 30 more minutes. This is never an issue I even think about unless I'm recording something like a classical concert.

+Jared Polin same case vs d7200? might be random 70d vs d750 video function. i am enthusiast shooting with nikon d3100 and 60d borrowed from friends. i do some jammins and stuff, low light stills, video quality and fast auto focus are important to me living in Finland. What would suggest, should i stretch out to d750 or perhaps x-t10/x-t1 route?

Great review Jared. If you don't mind I would like to ask you a few questions. I sold not to long ago my 60D for the 70D. I need to buy a wide angle L lens for professional purposes (slider and glidecam, filming outdoor in daylight) which one would you suggest ? The EF 16-35 f/2.8 II USM ? The EF 16-35 f/4L II USM ? Is it really worth spending 500$ more for a 2.8? Thank you again for your time BTW i have EF 24-70mm f/4L IS USM as a standard zoom

Hey Jared! So I own a D3100 about 3 lenses but I don't mind switching over to a whole new setup. My question is, Will I outgrow this camera too quickly, and will it be a good still image camera for portraits and outdoor photo shoots? I know I outgrew my D3100 in less than a year, will this be my best investment or the D7100? Thank you so much! Nikon lenses have a pretty good resale value, but selling your equipmen takes time/effort. If you aren't going to shoot videos much, then I would say upgrade to the D7100. If you do shoot a decent amount of video, then go with the Canon as Jared suggests.

dude for stills in low light conditions you can always focus via the viewfinder or manually. If you have good eyesight there is no reason not to trust it if you can't auto-focus.

I bought a 70D this week and it has focus problems and not just with one of my lenses but all of them. I have compared it against my 700D and the 700D has no focus problems and is pin sharp. It is not my lenses but the camera. I now know I will have a fight on my hands with the camera shop getting my money back. Out of 1000 photos I have taken with it using all of my lenses only 4 were pin sharp. I also see I am also not alone and other people have posted the same issue on KZbin. I expected much better off Canon

Compared to the 60D... the 70D is a major step backward for still photo shots when it comes to exposure bracketing to shoot HDR. You can NOT shoot in RAW and control the mode of AV, TV or Manual... and, that is a MAJOR setback ...specially compared to the capacity of the 60D when shooting multi-exposure bracketing shots. If you want to use the 70D to shoot HDR timelapse... forget it unless you want subpar shots that have little control... this is especially true if you want to shoot timelapse of sunrise/sunsets or low lighting. From a video shooting standpoint, the 70D is better... but, as an all round video and still shooting camera... the 60D beats the 70D - hands down. So... I would buy the 70D if you want to reduce still photo shooting choices in exchange for maginally better video. With the 60D... the trade off is not necessary.

Are you on crack??? The 70D exposure bracketing is FAR better then the 60D!!! With the 70D you have the option to shoot up to 7 exposures automatically!!! I use the 70D to shoot HDRIs all the time. No complaints here. And another thing, what do you mean can't control the "mode" of Av Tv or manual when shooting RAW??? Last time I checked I had total control over my cameras setting when shooting RAW.

It is NOT about having more brackets... it is about shooting "simultaneous" multiple exposures for HDR for timelapse (in particular) in RAW. And...Yes you can shoot in the various modes but those shots are individual shots distinctly requiring individual shutter activation. A very disappointing surprise on my part... to say the least. However... since I last posted that... it appears that I may have had a faulty camera... Not certain since I no longer have a 70D and have yet to test it out with another 70D, ...but the Drive mode > (high speed or low speed) continuous multi-frame option in the camera may not have been working properly... which would be strange since the drive mode shooting continuous multi-frame option worked in all situations EXCEPT when shooting in RAW with AV mode (or any mode for that matter). The Continuous Drive Mode work in every other way except what a I noted above with regard to bracketing exposures. So... NO... I am not on crack... you just didn't fully understand my original post or I failed to completely explain the issue. Until I get another 70D to verify... then, the 70D does not have the same ability as the 60D... at least the one I had did not work the same. The absolute best thing Canon could have done is allowed the new SCN backlight control mode to shoot in RAW.

Since I last posted that...I contacted Canon. And... I was correct. If you read the post closely... I was referencing multi-exposure bracketing of RAW (also called HDR - High Dynamic Range)...NOT simply shooting in RAW. The problem with the 70D was the NEW way that it captures mulit-exposures (i.e., exposure bracketing)... this change made the exposure hold period for initiating the multi-exposure longer. Therefore this longer hold required adjustments to HOW you use intervalometer (...a necessity for shooting professional level HDR - especially for low light situations or hard transitions from low to high light timelapse shots). The fix is to evaluate the intervalometer. Finally, I will keep this simple (as possible) since my ability to communicate at your level is definitely amiss. The 60D is better than the 70D when it comes to COMPATIBILITY to the many different intervalometers. And, in that sense, the 70D is less effective. However, until this was made apparent by a Canon Rep (plus some considerable trial and error between myself and the Canon Rep.) ... my original post is/was correct but incomplete as to the reason for this 70D shortfall. ... A shortfall that can be corrected by using a correct intervalometer (...which are NOT as common as you would expect). I sincerely hope this is an elementary and pedestrian enough explanation.
