There are two great sources for C200 user info: Canon's user documentation and the Ben Schubert C200 videos. This video in particular is fantastic and super-helpful. Thanks for sharing Ben!

In your tests, did try using the SDI output to capture 2K DCI 10-bit 422 on the external recorder? I know the camera is capable, but I haven't seen any example footage anywhere. Super curious. Thanks!

I've have been shooting photos with Canon DSLRs for years and just decided to buy the C200 because I want to get into video. Best "tutorial" on this camera!

I’d be interested in seeing more of your 1080FHD 10-bit 4:2:2 tests. I have a C200, but have never used an external recorder with it.

I might do more tests when I’m shooting raw but at this point I think the 4k 8bit is better.
@AdityaVarma4 жыл бұрын
This is quite an interesting test. I mostly shoot 8bit for personal work. I did not find any difference when I did internal vs External. But I sure should use my NINJA V much more often now. The only bummer is having 2 monitors to shoot for run and gun stuff. But if you are saying the pull and Push - ability is more then it is worth the pain.
@BenSchubert4 жыл бұрын
Definitely do tests to see if it makes sense for you. I like having the second monitor. I find it hard to see anything on the main monitor especially outside. And it’s also not a bad idea to still record to SD cards in case there is an issue with HDMI cable.

Thanks for the vid! Somewhat related comment, according to an interview with a Canon rep there is an update coming to the C200, whereas you'll be able to output to both the HDMI and SDI output soon. So that's good.

I heard about that. Should be good. Thanks for watching!

I had a similar impression to you with MP4 when I picked up my C200, a bit underwhelming at first: resolution way under par in 8 bit, too much noise in shadows above ISO 500, needs colour tweaking in camera so switch on and set other settings in menu to crunch up blacks but keep wide DR profile but tad more saturation. MP4 is not true 4K it’s only about 1500 -1600 lines of horizontal resolution and I’ve had it projected onto a big screen and I can safely say GH5 is way crisper. Thankfully RAW is a significant step up and the camera really does grow on you.
@BenSchubert4 жыл бұрын
That is interesting about the MP4 codec. I mostly got this camera for raw so I’m looking forward to that.

Excellent videos. More people need to see them and learn how to properly use the equipment. Too many people waste time watching empty calorie influencer videos that offer no knowledge.

Great tutorial, I appreciate the test shots to go along with the information! I have recorded to mp4 ever since I received the camera (basically when it came out) along with a few projects in RAW and it has worked well; my clients are happy. What I have not tried out is the XF-AVC codec, I'm curious to see the difference over mp4. Also, I've been debating on whether or not to get the ninja V, it looks amazing from your footage. TY
@BenSchubert4 жыл бұрын
I like the NinjaV on it. I thought it would be overkill at first but it’s such a handy addition given its brightness in broad daylight and the other tools it has. also ProresLT isn’t too much bigger than the XF-AVC CODEC
@Sci-Finatics2 жыл бұрын
Did you grade this footage in post? Did you shoot in C-LOG or Wide DR or Eos Standard? I find it tricky to get my C200 looking crisp and sharp with good color saturation and nicely crushed blacks. Some insight would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hey from Coquitlam! Just received my c200 and the same thing - waiting for CFast card :) I've tried to compare internal mp4 to my pretty old external Ninja 4.2.2 10 bit (it is HD only) - like ground and sky, huge difference. Especially after correction. For now, I see internal compressed recording useless, and waiting to play with raw - for me is it also the main reason for this purchase.

I’m hoping today is the day they finally ship. I ordered from Vistek and I think they ordered from somewhere else. Someone I know works at Canada Post and told be that because of Covid they are at half the staff while shipping is almost doubled. So waiting is all we can do for now

Ext. ProRes UHD 8bit 4:2:2 vs Ext. ProRes HD 10bit 4:2:2. What is your take now on these two formats ? Is the UHD still better, especially after grading ? Have you tried to superscale (with Resolve) the ProRes HD 10bit 4:2:2 and if so how does it compare with the Ext. ProRes UHD 8bit 4:2:2 ? I have a Ninja Blade only recording HD, do you think it is worth getting a Ninja V to record in UHD? I film in RAW but I wish to have a good 4k fallback footage. I don’t like the internal UHD 8bit 4:2:0. It is too mushy compared to ProResed RAW.

Can you make a video talking about the different colour profiles on the c200 and what ones you would use and why?

do you think if is worth, to have a ninja V, in c200 for kind of replace the expensives cf cards?

Great video Ben! Question if you don't mind. I heard that the waveform doesn't display on external monitors on the C200 when using HDMI - only through SDI. Is that true? Thanks!

It’s true. Though usually a good external monitor will have a decent waveform
@harrygilsphotovideo4 жыл бұрын
@@BenSchubert thanks! Does the Ninja V you use have a good waveform? Just researching monitors.

Yes. And peaking and lit support and a ton of other things. If you don’t need the recording you should look at the shinobeV which is just a monitor

Ben, thanks for this. Actually the 1080p 10 bit don't look all that bad--it's basically a good basic image. RAW---overrated if you're shooting for KZbin

It all depends on what you need it for. If the 2k 10bit works for you then go for it. I only shoot raw these days but I only keep the files after processing them if it’s an important project

So with the Atomos, I can shoot 4k 10 bit color footage?

@@BenSchubert Ok. Last question. If I shoot 1 hour in RAW, that's 1TB of footage I'll have to transcode to proxies right?

It’s a good practice to do but it depends on your machine and editing software. I was doing that for premiere but I can play the raw footage in real-time in DaVinci Resolve

Nothing made any sense in this video. I can never see any difference or the alledged moiree or which codecs are internal or external. 10bit will only show advantage over 8 bit when you grade it. No grading in this vid.
@BenSchubert4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, this was a 8bit vs 8bit video. I prefer 10bit but that’s not really what I’m talking about here. Unless you mean the 2k 10bit which absolutely is line skipped and looks bad relative to the 4K 8bit which can be downsampled to 10bit. Thanks for showing up!

@@BenSchubert Im not really sure what im talking about - hence hunting you tube for info. Im not clear of what the camera can do and out of what output ports and to which recorder - I have a flame I think.

Got it. It can only do uncompressed 4K 8bit4:2:2 or line skipped 2k 10bit 4:2:2put of either the HDMI OR SDI. if you search “c200 output “ in google you can find a chart that will tell you the recording options. Hope that helps!

@@BenSchubert Cool - I can also now see the skipped image on your glasses in the 10bitHD. YT playback is so variable that you might want to punch in to demonstrate your points. So basically 4k out of HDMI recorded with pro res is worth it vs the internal compressed codec. Makes sense.
