Oh man I just bought a 40D for $40 as a gift for someone I know who wanted to learn photography, and the moment I took it out of the package my brains blew out the back of my head- I couldn’t believe how solid and robust it felt. I expected it to be made of plastic and weigh as much as a toilet paper tube. So I got to play and test it for a few days before giving it away, and in that time I fell in love. I need to get one now.

It is great seeing you recommending used pro gear instead of spending a ton of money on the latest sparkling gear. I have been shooting for 3 decades, I believe in purchasing solid pro gear. Initially, I purchased new gear when needed, I soon realized that pro gear was durable and had a long shelf life. I asked myself why spend a ton of money for gear when there are guys who love to purchase the latest greatest pro gear more than they love making beautiful images. They receive more enjoyment talking about dynamic range , frames per second than actually making images. I have had those type guys approach me on major college football sidelines asking me about my equipment. I have learned to sit back a few years and wait for those guys to dump their relatively new lightly used pro gear for the newer gear that was marketed to make them believe that it will make better pictures. Yesterday's technological marvels are not going to become obsolete overnight despite what the marketers are saying in advertisements. Nice video!

I picked up a 40D for $20 that was being sold for parts “no power” I fix electronics so I thought I’d pick it up and see if I could fix it.turns out it just needed a new battery and works great. I was going to sell it but I think I’m going to keep it so I won’t feel bad if it gets banged around. I’m too scared to use my $4800 R5C in some situations and always worry it’ll get messed up. That’s another reason why cheaper cameras are good to have.

Couldn’t agree more. Just purchased a 40D with an eye towards mounting some great older L glass like the 70-200 f4 L or 300 f4 L. Picked up a mint 40D for $100 and the great Tamron 17-50 f2.8 for $140. Bam 💥. Don’t care about video but I really wanted a CCD sensor DSLR (either 40D, D200, K10D) for the great colors, almost slide film look. The fact that the 40D was a $1300 prosumer body with a magnesium alloy build and 5D style handling is a huge bonus. Most of the newer cameras have mostly improved in low light and video features. (I have modern m43 cameras and my iPhone for that). I’d much rather build up a collection of older L or Nikkor lenses while getting joy out of a top notch older body.

I really like my Minolta 200mm f2.8 APO and 1.4x TC APO, along with my Sony A57 when doing wildlife stuff. Without the TC it gets great low light ability and eqv to 300mm reach, and with it 420mm at f4 it's low light performance isn't as good but the range is amazing. Once I sold the lens and accessories that came with my A57 I paid less than $100 for it, and I am much happier spending $500 on a lens and a TC than getting a $600 camera body. 16mp, 10 and 12 shots per second burst modes, decent 1080p video with phase detect autofocus, panorama, fill flash, a flippy (under) screen, a large battery and an OVF for less than $100? I mean I bought an A6300 to replace it and it didn't even hold up, so I sold it, I would rather have better lenses for this (and my Minolta 7000 AF so I only buy screw drive lenses).

I don't know if I'll have to just buy it and in the future buy another one to make videos or just buy the 1300D!
@snappiness3 жыл бұрын
Would you take a lot of video with the 50mm specifically? For most of these budget cameras, a smart phone is going to shoot better video. Usually stabilized with nice color baked in. The only thing is it couldn't replicate the look of a large sensor camera with a fast lens. But if you are just shooting normal stuff wide and stopped down, it's something to consider.

I'm beginning to realize that all that money I spent on older out of date cameras could have been better spent on one really good camera. Don't you think? I just bought an Olympus E-PL1 for $86 w/lens, didn't get it shipped yet, but I'm still wondering WHY I bought it? Out of nostalgia, or to show people how adept I am in my photography by declaring, "Hey, look at this image, nice, huh? And it's only 12 mp?" Or maybe because I have GAS and older cameras are much cheaper and have better value? Maybe you can explain it better.

I get you. I go through phases. I'll find cheap old cameras and pick them up, then once I have too many to even use and the novelty is over I sell most of them and buy a nicer lens for my main camera haha. It could definitely be argued I could save time by just saving up and buying nice lens. But I get a lot of enjoyment out of these old cameras, and some of them do stick around in my arsenal longer term. I'm in no rush to have lots of nice gear anyway. Just in it for the ride :)

Definitely influenced by only having it for a day. The two I was most excited about were the yellow bellied bird in the grass with dew (heavily cropped and loss of contrast due to shooting against sun) and the baby owl. Not because it's a great shot, but because I've never seen one before! But I do think the lens holds up well, so I take full responsibility as the user for the images ;)

Well, when the normal workhorse is a K1 and DA* 300mm it's really hard to match that IQ. The pentax 300 has to be one of the best lenses optically ever made. But, I like to play this game from time to time and there is a huge stable of really great old canon lenses. The tricky part now is that once you have a really nice lens bought used at a crazy price, a used mirrorless body and adapter will probably cost a little more but also be heaps better in terms of IQ. But, in 5 years even things like a D850 will be cheap. Always buy great lenses first!
