Great review. After owning this lens for almost a year with the Canon 80D, it is far from tragic. I used it recently at the Carlsbad Caverns National Park, in both shutter priority and manual mode, and it was simply amazing what I was able to get in low light with the image stabilization. It allowed me to push the 80D to its limits and know that the lens would be consistent regardless of the camera setting. In normal lighting and also with a speed flash, it is consistently reliable. It's my go to lens for people and family shots indoors. And is super fast outdoors in daylight. And lastly I can hardly tell the lens is on the camera. It's a nice weight for extended carry.

When changing the aperture on th canon 80D, can you use f/.2? I am asking because of the crop factor.

Josh S. I really appreciate this review . I’ve been looking at the Sigma 35 f1.4 , the canon 50 f1.2, and the canon 85 1.4... but I have the same set up Canon 80D and I recently went to the Carlsbad taverns in New Mexico .. my sigma 17-70 really good in the low light but I could imagine this f2 Thru and Thru would have blown me away.

@@kvangel Yeah but the crop still plays a role. In the Metadata of the image you can even see 35mm as focal length when using this lens, even tho with a 1.6x crop this is a 56mm. That's because they use full frame equivalent measurements for this and don't convert it to your format. But because of physics, the crop factor ALWAYS plays a role. Because you simply can't beat physics.

I have the Sigma and it misses focus often and find it is most reliable stopped down, so now I am considering the Canon 35 f2 IS, especially after listening to Dustin Abbott's glowing review of the Canon, esp. since the Sigma is so heavy and that gets annoying if shooting all day long.

Hi! I had the same problem with my Sigma (for photography). Turns out, there's an issue with wider prime lenses and focusing distance. Look up videos of the Sigma USB Dock with your lens or see if one of your local camera shops can tune the focus for you! It cost me about $50 and it was well worth it.

The Canon makes sense for someone wanting to have something they can throw in a small bag/purse while traveling that can take great photos, with the added benefit of IS for video if you ever need it. For me with a new kiddo and traveling in the future. It's the Canon all the way. And now at $550 everywhere it's much cheaper than the Sigma.

the only issue I had with the sigma 1.4 lens is that it miss focus most of the time and that can be a real pain especially when you are shooting weddings. Sadly my Sigma 35 wasn't focussing good enough even after using a tap in console... wouldn't focus at infinity accurately and still miss in between. Sadly... because the overall sharpness and contrast was mindblowingly good at f/1.4. Now I am happy with my 35 f/2 IS from Canon, although I only use APS-C and already get to see the decreasing image quality at f/2 in the outer areas of the field of view when bright highlights are prominent. The blurred background has a lot of lateral chromatic aberrations, but well... the IS works great, it's compact and sturdy and good enough. For a price of around 400€ compared to the Sigma still a bargain and hell, it focusses well.

I went back & forth between the SIgma & the Canon 35 IS. In the end the rebate from Canon won me over. I like my 35IS, especially for dark events shows (makes me wish I could afford the 70-200 II IS) and other dark events where the 1 stop difference isn't enough (I shoot w/ a 6D, frequently at 6400+). I figure I will eventually get the Sigma, though right now I am saving for a Tamron 24-70.

Hi Christopher this is probably a dumb question. Currently using a 70D with a 24-105 will images using the EF 35 look exactly the same as the 24-105 set at 35? This question relates to angle of view/perspective not glass quality/F stop….. Asking as one is a standard zoom and the other a (semi) wide angle prime, not sure if that changes anything?

+Emmanuel Nalli The only difference (usually) is the prime has a bigger aperture compared to a zoom lens (I'm presuming Horse Radish is using the 24-105 F/4L) but still have a reasonable price. 35mm is 35mm as Christopher mentioned. No difference.

I like the extra contrast and sharpness i am getting over 24 and 50 STMs. Pictures look nicer straight out of camera and loot less work needed in processing RAWs for nice looking pictures. I hope it works well with servo AF..

Hello Chris (and youtubers) - any advice on getting this canon 35mm IS versus the sigma 30mm 1.4 (NOT the 35mm)? I am trying for a "one lens one camera" solution for general walkabout and vacations, parks, and the occasional portrait. I am prioritizing portability and I have been having most success with a 22mm f2.0 prime (on an APSC sensor, the EOS M3 system, which translates to ~35mm FF equivalent). I also have the nifty fifty EF 50mm 1.8 STM, but I am getting tired of swapping between the 22mm and the 50mm all the time, and want something in the middle. (I think I can deal with not having a standard zoom range, dont want to deal with the weight and size of a 17-50 or 24-70 of any kind, and can break out my telephoto [just an EFS 55-250] for the odd trip to the zoo or shooting at the moon.) What would you rather pick on an APSC sensor, the sigma 30mm 1.4 art, or canon 35mm 2.0 IS? Thanks Chris! Your videos are incredibly helpful, thorough, and objective :)

Hi, I can't comment on the Canon 35mm unfortunately, but I have the Sigma 30mm 1.4 Art. I think it's perfect for the "one lens one camera" solution, as you call it. It's great as a walkaround lens on an APS-C camera. Since I have it I didn't really used the kit lens (18-55 STM) much, because with moving a few steps back or forward you can get similar angle of views like the kit lens offers, but with much better sharpness, and generally nicer looking pictures. The build quality is outstanding, and it just feels so great in your hands. It also balances very well with a Canon 700/750D, because it has around the same weight like the cam itself. Then of course there is the 1.4 aperture, wich allows you to use lower ISO values in low light, which gives you cleaner looking pictures. You can also blur the background out completely at 1.4, if you are fairly close to your subject. Having said all that, you'd still want to stick to your 50mm 1.8 STM for portraits, if you want to get close head shots, or head and shoulder shots. Why? Firstly, you really need to get very close to your model with the 30mm if you want to fill the frame with just her/his head, which can be a bit intimidating for the model, and also isn't so pleasant for you as the photographer. Secondly, given the slight wide-angle lens nature of the 30mm, the face will get distorted... the nose will appear to big, etc. You also get much more of the background included in your shot. So the 50mm STM is still a better choice for close-up portraits. You could of course move further back with the 30mm and then crop, but of course that means extra work, and you lose some resolution. So all in all, I love the Sigma 30mm, but I still kept the 50mm for the reasons mentioned above.

Never underestimate Image Stabilization! Yes, a 1.4 let's in twice as much light, but a 4-stop image stabilizer let's you shoot at 1/8th the shutter speed you would use with a Non-IS lens. 3 stops of an advantage is huge! especially for travel and run-and-gun type shooting. Plus: video will always be better handheld no matter what. IS will always help your shots be stable, and you will get more sharp images per session.

Hi Christopher, I was about to purchase this lens to shoot handheld video with it, however I did not realize that the IS system itself can be very noisy, to the point that it´s easily picked by both the onboard and a top-mounted shotgun, as it is the case with the 24-105mm. Could you please comment if you have this problem while shooting video? Cheers mate

Christopher Frost Photography Sorry mate, I missed your comment. The problem is a external mic is usually unable to mute the AF motor sound, so I´m not too hopeful if the IS is very loud. Have you tried it yourself? And BTW, I found out the IS on the 24-70mm f/4 is much quieter than on the old 24-105mm, almost inaudible. Just in case you´re interested... ;)

First, thanks for your channel and your reviews. Clear, concise, well explained information with samples. Outstanding work! Second, is there any way to get the picture you are using to check sharpness and vignetting? And third, I own this lens and I really love it, it's really fun and works really nice. I had the Sigma 17-50 2.8 with my older Sony a300, and I prefer the Canon35mmf2 (I'm not pro, I just prefer the 'feeling' with the canon and my unit had problems with vignetting). I'm taking photography a little bit more seriously lately and I'm getting some used lenses (this 35mmf2, the Canon 50mm f1.4 which is fine but not outstanding, and a new 70-200 f4 non IS), and I'd really appreciate your opinion about getting the Canon 20mm or the Samyang 14mm as I'm looking for a wide angle prime lens. Thank you in advance, and please, keep this fantastic work on! Enrique from Spain.

I know that f2.8 is best, best it avoid good bokeh (dof). so maybe, if f2.2 or f2.5 presents good quality, we can use insted f2.8

At the risk of wearing out my welcome... any chance you're going to do a video review of the EF 24 2.8 IS lens? The reason I ask is that you say you really like 35mm in a full frame as a "walking around" lens, and talk about how this particular lens with IS is a great one for video. For me (with my coming 70D) the closest thing Canon makes is that EF 24 (which translates into about 39mm). It seems to get good reviews on the web but as I trust what you say more than others I'd love to know your thoughts about it. No huge rush -- it will be weeks before I get my entire kit together and I'm still shaking lenses out, but if you do get a chance it would be a great review to have.

I own a crop sensor camera and 50mm 1.8 and 24mm EF-S 2.8 and Sigma 17-50 2.8. 24 seems to small for me and 50mm too tight. Do you believe it worth the price on this 35mm IS? IS would be a great value for me. Do you believe this 35mm is much better than Sigma`s and my EF-S 24mm? I can get 35mm 2.8 IS on my sigme, it is only havy. how would them compare. Just as a reference: 35mm IS cost 1.5x Sigma`s value and more than 4x the EF-S 24mm value...

Hello Chris. Very good review one of the best Or if not the best I have seen. I wanted to ask you for advice since I am a total noob with DSLRs. I am thinking on buying this lense for my canon 80D but I also want to have zoom on it. What lenses would you recommend?

Hello Christopher, I'm really into buying a SIGMA 35 F1.4, but seeing some reviews I'm really worried about the AF issue in the Sigma's lenses. don't you think that buying a Sigma is a risk, because if you get a good one, it's perfect, but if won't, you'll have some problems to handle...

I was interested in this as I'm currently choosing between the Canon and Sigma. Bottom line: I'm not sure I want to buy a £600 lottery ticket. I can see the Sigma potentially beats Canon in some ways but Sigma's QC and AF reliability coupled with Sigma's pretty dire history put me off it. These really count heavily against Sigma for me and I'm really struggling to convince myself to buy any of their lenses.

Just want to say fantastic job on the video. It was extremely well put together and very helpful. One question though, as a general purpose lens for an apsc body. Would you prefer the IS of the Canon 35mm, or would the benefits of the sigma outweigh the need for IS? I ask because I am planning on selling my 17-40 F4L and replacing it with a 35mm prime and then the 10-22mm efs wide angle. Thanks

It's a super hard question which I look at at the end of this video. I'd probably go for the Canon because I value IS for video work

Ok. Me personally I do not shoot video. However I believe that the IS would still be a major benefit for low light shooting, as the 35mm would be my general purpose lens?

Chris, would you recommend this lens or the newer Tamron 35mm VC? I've heard that the Canon has faster and more reliable autofocus while being softer in the corners than the Tamron. FYI the Tstop score of this Canon is actually a hair better than the Tamron (2.0 vs 2.1 according to DXOMark) so the low light capabilities should be about the same despite the Tamron being supposedly faster. I'm pretty much asking about the sharpness and autofocus accuracy between the two and which one you would choose.
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 8 жыл бұрын
+Joel Watanabe I haven't tested the Tamron 35mm although I have tested the 45mm. I hear the Tamron 35 is a little better generally than the Canon 35 in a few different ways - there are some good articles on the internet from people who have compared them directly
@jwatanabe90

+Christopher Frost Photography Ok thanks, was debating a 35mm option. I actually stepped up and went with the Sigma 35mm ART. It's sharp as hell when it nails focus. Although it focuses fine at close distances with no AFMA, I've been having some problems with severe backfocusing (I estimate it needs correction around -15) at longer focus distances. I'm waiting for the dock to get here and I'm hoping that that will help solve the problem. If that doesn't help, I may go for the Tamron, then.
@jwatanabe90
@jwatanabe90 8 жыл бұрын
+Christopher Frost Photography Unfortunately my Sigma 35mm Art still has focus issues even with dock adjustments. Between 4 feet and infinity, it will alternate back focusing and front focusing depending on focus distance. The dock can't fix that as all those issues are in the same focus zone on the dock settings. Although I love the sharpness of the Sigma, I really need the autofocus accuracy that something like this Canon lens is known for. So I am going to save myself a couple hundred bucks and try it out.

Hi Christopher! I have a noob question but really important to me. If i buy this lens for video. will video quality and or picture quality defer depending on cameras? i have the t3i rebel. will it look better on another camera such as 6D 7D or 5D. i ask because a friend told me it is all about the lens and not the body.
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 9 жыл бұрын
Ryuu Sama That's a question about cameras rather than lenses, but I'll give you what I know. The 5D and 6D are full frame cameras, so they'll give you a wider angle of view and a narrow depth of field, or more out of focus backgrounds. The 6D and the 7D have bad problems with moire - look it up if you're not sure what that is. The 7D has weak picture quality when used at high ISOs.

They should work similarly well - if you're relying on the video autofocus it might be slightly better to go for the Canon just in case, although there will still be some slight noise as the autofocus motor microadjusts

If this Canon 35mm makes all that whooshing noise during autofocus, I don't see how it would be a good video lens. Unless you're recording sound with a shotgun mic or with a separate audio system. But for me, that noise is a deal breaker because I shoot a lot of video and I want the option of using the camera's internal mic.

I think with 4-5-6 pcs of lenses i could cover all my needs in taking pictures even at night, even in sunlight, even closer of far. They could be zoom lenses or not.
