Like you I use a 6D and the wonderful 40 f/2.8 STM pancake lens. It's videos like yours that point out the pros and cons of lenses that led to my purchase of that lens. This past weekend I purchased the 35 f/2 IS USM because the price was right for a used lens I love the focal length and it has IS which I'm sure will come in handy in low light or situations where I need a slow shutter speed.

I have the 40mm lens and I am very happy with it. Image quality is good, but where it stands out most is its compact size, making the DSLR setup so much easier to carry around.

you love that 40mm!! I went with the 50mm 1.8 because it let's me do night street photography. Also the 1.8 gave me gorgeous pictures of California wild flowers. I still think 50 mm is the better buy.

I agree with your statement. I have the 50 f/1.8 II and the 50 f/1.8 STM and the 40 f/2.8 STM plus I have the 35 f/2 IS USM on it's way from a reliable seller on eBay for me to try out. Of the 4 prime lenses I use the 50's the most but I'm sure the 35 will replace it because of the IS. I have a neuro-muscular disease and I think having a prime with IS will help me enjoy the hobby for a long time. I gave up some nice L zoom lenses because they were to heavy to lug around all day and being heavy they saw little use. Back in my film days it was the F-1N and nFD 35 f/2 that gave me a lot of enjoyment because it was the combo I used to photograph my children when they were babies.

Nice review, i am looking at some "wide" primes for my old 5d classic and was curious how much there is difference in field of view between these two lenses? Is it worth saving some more money and buying 35mm? Thanks on the video, great job, keep it up! :)

Good comparison! Maybe I will keep my 40mm just for its great contralight quality - I now own the RF35mm which has a very effective IS (I had different 1 s or 0.6 s shots which were pin sharp, 1 out of three) and the Macro advantage. Same decision route here: Bought the 40mm as early adopter at a time when the EF 35mm was very expensive in comparison and loved it on EOS M system - now the EF-M 32 has replaced the 40mm as lens glued on my M50. But also I will keep my FD 17mm for my RP BECAUSE of great flares in all rainbow colors for video. Gives much more depth if I will produce a science fiction (that will presumably never happen, but who nows ... :)

Nice review, Camerahoarders. I am looking at the 35mm f/2 IS for two years now since my 50mm is too tight on my camera (APS-C), but still haven't decided to get it; don't know why.

Hello and thank you for this little video. If you had to compare this Pancake 40 mm f 2.8 stm VS Canon 35 f2 is usm, how about in terms of image quality : (Sharpness + Bokeh ...) which is better ? When I look at the results of the DxOMark, the overall score is = 28 for the 40mm against 31 for the 35 f2 ! ... Who do you really prefer ? I only do the picture, no video ! To know that it is to use on my Canon 6D Mark II ... In advance, thank you for your answers. Sincerely, Philgood ...

I realize that USM motor does not age well compared to STM ones... I have the 40mm f.28 as well as 50mm f1.4. The 50mm focuses slower but those extra 2-3 light stops are life savers. If I have to choose, I would still go for the 50mm. I do wish they both have IS tho :(

net net, the 35 is one notch better at 3-4 times the price! Maybe worth it for the IS for walk around.

hi, thanks for really great review. I would like to ask if 40/2.8 is not easy to autofocus damage, because front element extends out. This was problem for 50/1.8 II and STM, but they had bajonet for lenshood, which really protected the front element. Canon 40 can have lens hood, but it extends with front element so its not a real manual protection, only from sun reflections. Thanks for your answer.
@Camerahoarders
@Camerahoarders 3 жыл бұрын
In theory yes, but in practice I doubt many people had problems with physical extending front element damage. My 40 is 6 years old, and 50 4-5 years and still work perfectly.
