I'm re-visiting a couple of lenses that I reviewwed in the past, before I used standardized testing and a full-frame camera. This should be fun! First up, one of Canon's most popular, and least expensive, pancake lenses.

I love this lens! I got it for a fast prime for my Canon M and M3 so I use it with the adapter and overall am very pleased. When I travel and go out to dine with my wife it is my go to lens for food photography, great speed in low light, contrast and resolution as well as nice bokeh in the background especially if there are some candles of soft lighting there. For the price it really can't be beat especially if you want to travel as light as possible. With the Canon M system, this and the 22mm are great lenses for when you are out and about.

The 24mm is a EF-S lens so won't fit on a full frame unless you find some way to adapt it. Even if you did adapt it I think you'd probably get some pretty heavy vignetting so wouldn't really be worth it, in my opinion.

Perfect lens for walking around and long carries. Street scenes, Portraits, Landscapes, it may not be the best in a particular category, but it offers a great range of uses for a go-to lens. You might miss any telephoto, and on a cropped sensor there is some sacrifice in compositions with taller or wider scenes. But I find those limitations are not too bad compared with the advantages. You have to work within it's area. On my 77D it makes a DSLR a great street camera (unless you're a front-shirt pocket type of person). For the price, a superb choice and I'm fully glad I bought this lens. For street photography, I think the 50mm doesn't offer any significant advantage, may as well go pancake.

Hi Chris, many thanks for the review! Recently I purchased a Canon EOS 650 for analog film photography. This pancake lens is also very nice to work with this vintage camera from the beginnings of the EOS era. Regarding the contrast loss in direct bright light you showed in this review: There’s also a special lens hood for this lens available by Canon for its filter thread of 49mm, which I purchased, too. Do you still take photos on an analog film? I prefer the focal length of 40mm over the 50mm in most situations. Best wishes, Ralf

hi, thank you for great review, . I would like to ask if 40/2.8 is not easy to autofocus damage, because front element extends out. This was problem for 50/1.8 II and STM, but they had bajonet for lenshood, which really protected the front element. Canon 40 can have lens hood, but it extends with front element so its not a real manual protection, only from sun reflections. Thanks for your answer.

Hi Chris, As always, I have enjoyed this review. One thing that's not quite clear to me is why you turn on peripheral illumination and CA control when reviewing Canon lenses? AFAIK, peripheral and CA control only work when shooting JPGs, so a RAW file would still show all the aberrations, so you're not getting a clear picture as to the optical quality of the lens. Additionally, it makes it difficult to compare Canon lenses to third party lenses since peripheral illumination and CA control cannot be turned on with third party lenses. I think it would be a better methodology to keep all of the electronic aides turned off when reviewing all lenses. Keep up the good work. Happy Holidays to you and your family.
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 7 жыл бұрын
TBH, it's just what I ended up doing - there are pros and cons to testing either way. It might be better to turn off the corrections in camera, but then again, most serious photographers will correct them in editing anyway
@bifcake
@bifcake 7 жыл бұрын
I agree that most photographers will correct them in editing. I'm saying that strictly from the testing methodology point of view, you want consistency. By turning everything off you're able to see what the actual lens is doing and you're not biasing your comparisons against third party lenses.

Hi Christopher. I reckon this mm size is not suitable for vlogging? I am planning to buy the new eos m5 and would like to only carry pancakes with me for obvious transportation reasons. What is your opinion about this? Thanks a lot for your vids :) All the love from Austria!
@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 7 жыл бұрын
The M5 is an APS-C camera, so you'd probably find 40mm a tight angle for vlogging. Far better would be the excellent EF-M 22mm f/2. Incidentally, the M5 might not be the best camera for vlogging - the screen only folds downwards for its 'selfie' mode, and if your camera is on a tripod, it'll be in the way
@FabioPalvelli
@FabioPalvelli 7 жыл бұрын
I know, it is a fair point. I still have troubles finding a suitable camera that offers high quality image and audio and the chance to swap lenses. The EOS M3 struggles a bit in low light from what I have seen and autofocus speed is not as good as the 5 version. Canon continues making half compromise products leaving us always with enough room for us to question everything and maybe overbuying items just to maximize their sales :) However... not to sound like a buffoon, but I might have figured out a quick release plate design that might move the camera a bit to the side and let a bit more of the screen past the tripod. I know it is still not optimal but I have no other solution. Anyway as always thanks to take the time to answer always to my comments :)

This is not a pancake on EOS M5. You are forgetting the huge adapter. This is bigger than the kit lens on M5. camerasize.com/compact/#684.680,684.439.2,684.349,ha,t The kit zoom also has IS which is mandatory. Also the weight is to consider. The adapter weights 108 grams even without the tripod mount. So together they take 230 grams when the kit lens is 130 grams. But if one wants to travel light a compact camera is better.

We don't normally think of 2 lenses only 10mm apart in focal length as being quite different in purpose or execution but here, it seems the right answer isn't either/or, but rather "both." I like the 50 for flexibility but that's really "tool talk," because creatively I'm better off with a 40mm. And apart from size, I also value the 40's performance. The flexibility of the 50's ƒ/1.8 comes with a noticeable performance hit.

@christopherfrost
@christopherfrost 5 жыл бұрын
The EOS M is an APS-C sensor camera, so, you always multiply by 1.6x for the full-frame equivalent. So 40x1.6 = 64mm equivalent.
@gman922
@gman922 5 жыл бұрын
Yes close, which adapter did you use please.
@okaro6595
@okaro6595 4 жыл бұрын
Yes it is 65 mm equivalent. This means that is has same angle of view as 65 mm would have on a full frame camera. The lens still is 40 mm and nothing changes in it. Especially the adapter just puts the lens at the proper distance. Each lens had a specific distance to which they need to be mounted. For EOS M it is 18 mm, for EOS DSLRs it is 44 mm. For Nikon it is 46.5 mm. I hat loose terminology like the lens becomes something else. No it does not. Essentially if you make 10 cm x 15 cm print with a crop camera it is same as if you took the image on a full frame camera with same lens and printed it on 16 cm x 24 cm and the used scissors to cut 10 cm x 15 cm from the center. If you understand that the lens never changes to something else you then realize why, say, 24 mm is always 24 mm no matter if it is for APS-C or full frame (if you have APS-C). There are too many misconceptions based on incorrect understanding of the videos by Tony Northrup. These may led to people buying incorrect lenses.

Think about this way. The camera has a sensor that is 22.3 mm wide. If you want to shoot something that 2 m wide and want 2.23 m exactly to the image then with 24 mm you need to shoot at 2.4 m. With 40 mm you need to go back to 4 m. (If meters are hard, think of yards). So the 24 mm gives about same in the image horizontally that is the distance. This means that it is nice when shooting inside. In a square room you get almost the whole opposite wall if you have your back on the wall. It is a nice general purpose lens. In the 70s when compact cameras were sold without zoom the typical lens was just 38 mm which on 36 mm frame is basically same as 24 mm on a 22.3 mm sensor. So the 24 mm is a good general purpose lens It works well both inside and outside. It may not be ideal. Inside 15-18 mm would be better, outside maybe 28-35 mm. The 40 mm is much tighter. When shooting inside it likely will feel too tight. When shooting outside it likely is perfectly OK on street photography etc. Shooting buildings could be harder. The 40 mm is more idea on full frame. You have the 18-55 mm kit zoom. Set it to 24 mm and 40 mm and took some photos without using the zoom. See how it woks. IMO since the whole point of this kind of a lens is to travel light so yo likely will not carry other lenses so IMO having the 24 mm is better. For example the 50 mm f/1.8 is a lens that you carry in addition to something else like the kit or the 24 mm. Of course it is not far fetched to get both and have one in camera and another in the pocket. Also a combination of, say, 55-250mm and 24 mm is good covering most cases.

Veganes Spanferkel Babe You should sell it and get a proper mft lens imo.. Cuz to use autofocus and in camera aperture etc you need something like Metabones Speedbooster which cost 3x the cost of the lens.

I have this Lens and the sharpness of the image is second to non.........a few have commented how they wish it was f/2 I cannot see a reason to this. I usually stop down to around f/5.6- f/8 and any lower tends to render a softer image.

Yes, it is specifically for FF (though works also on crop). The 24 mm is equivalent for crop only.
@mhs6305
@mhs6305 4 жыл бұрын
No. The 24mm "EF-S" f2.8 STM pancake is designed for APSC format cameras while the "EF" lenses are designed for both Full frame and APSC format cameras. You can't use "EF-S" series lenses on your full frame camera body. You can only use "EF" lenses on your full frame camera body. These EF lenses usually marked with a red dot.

I think you might need to get a cheap Canon kit lens and play around with it for a while, to get used to focal distances. The Canon 18-55 IS STM would be a good start
@okaro6595
@okaro6595 6 жыл бұрын
I think you are misusing the term "zoomed". Zooming means adjusting focal length on a zoom lens. These are prime lenses that do not zoom, they are what they are. You should probably check the EF-S 24 mm f/2.8 STM. With that you get horizontally almost as much in the picture as is the distance.
