Great review. Covered everything I wanted to know. One suggestion on the vlog/mic situation: The Rode Wireless Go has worked well for me on other cameras with the flip up screen by simply clipping the receiver (or is it transmitter?) to the screen or frame of the screen. This keeps 90% or all of the screen visible.

Mark - I’m catching up :-) With the recent announcement of the end of the M line (at least I think it’s all but announced) I decided to get an M6 Mark II anyway. You - more than anyone - has helped me to research and determine that this was the right move. I got a refurbished silver body version from Canon for a great price and it’s in the mail on it’s way to me as I type. As an owner of a 5D Mark III and a 7D Mark II and lots of Canon EF and EF-S glass, the M6 seemed like a natural fit into that ecosystem. I had a G7X mark III, which was a fun little camera, but the M6 MKII I think it going to be a huge step up. So I type a comment here to simply thank you for all your information, research and recommendations. I’m excited to have the M6 MKII in my bag. Oh and I also bought the Canon 18-55 M IS lens at Amazon for $81! Which is just a nutty price for what will likely be a very useful video targeted lens. Thanks!

Nice review. Thanks for putting it together. The M6 II ticks nearly all of the boxes for me as a walk-and-talk vlogging camera: great autofocus; great image quality for video; microphone input; flipup screen (which I prefer); relatively small and light. However, where it would let me down is in the stabilization. The jittery, jumpy footage while walking and filming yourself is a deal breaker for me. That's such a shame. If it had the stabilization you see on Panasonic or Olympus cameras, it would be ideal for me. But I don't think I would be happy with that shaky footage. It looks great when you are holding the camera steady in your hands and filming something away from you. The stabilization works well for that. But when you are just walking along filming yourself, the jumpiness and shaky footage is too distracting. Then again, I don't know of any APS-C camera that has good stabilization. So far, only the micro four thirds camera manufacturers have gotten stabilization right.

Just a follow-up on my previous comment: I've since watched another video review of the M6 II, and I learned that this camera has two stabilization modes. There is the regular mode (which I assume you used during your review), but there is also an Enhanced stabilization mode. It improves the stabilization quite a bit while cropping in much more. I don't know yet if the Enhanced mode makes the M6 II stable enough for smooth walk-and-talk vlogging, but I'm going to track down some more reviews and find out more. It's a very attractive camera if I can convince myself that the stabilization is good enough. 🙂

This is a good idea for a video. I will try to jump out and shoot a good comparison between the modes, with a few different lenses. The videos I have seen haven really covered it that well.
@markwiemels5 жыл бұрын
I should also note that the path I was walking on was a pretty uneven, and since I was looking at the camera I wasn’t looking at my feet. Every step was a surprise landing, I did notice that footage looked more jumpy than normal.

@@markwiemels I got the M6 MKII a couple weeks ago, and I absolutely love it!! I find myself being more interested in doing photography than video at this time, but I have to say, it does a great job! On one of Christopher Frost's videos, he showed how sharp the 15-45mm kit lens is (at 15mm specifically), which was a pleasant surprise for me, so I took that lens out of the box and plan on taking a bunch of 15mm shots on it. It definitely loses some sharpness as you zoom in, but is a better lens than one would think otherwise.

I just impulse bought this camera having come from a Sony A6000/6300 and a Fuji X-T3. Most of my shooting is personal family documentary so your video was great to see. The Fuji was fine but I was disappointed by their subject tracking and their RAF files. I also felt a bit let down by their lens choice; most being expensive and a little bit dated now in terms of AF speed. I know it's meant to be a great camera but it probably specialised in areas I didnt appreciate. It's early days but I'm loving the ergonomics of the M6 Mk2 and it's so ridiculously compact with the 22mm F2. And it seems simple enough that my wife can grab it in auto mode and do her own stuff on it too! Something which would have never happened on the fuji or sony. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos!

Funny, I have the XT-3 and the M6 Mark II. I have a similar experience, I prefer the canon for all photography and anytime I want video that I know will be in focus. I prefer the Fuji for super detailed video, when I’m behind the camera and can put in the effort it takes to get a good result. Check out the EF-M 32mm f1.4 lens too, one of the best lenses I have ever owned on any camera system.

@markwiemels3 жыл бұрын
Love this question. You’re in luck, I also shoot Fuji. From a lens perspective, Fuji has better high end aps-c sensor lenses, so that points me heavily toward Fuji… but, it does take some effort to get the best out of a Fuji camera, the menus are terrible, and finding the right settings can be very difficult at times. Once you have it tuned in, and customised, it gets better, but the canon is so user friendly and just “works” it’s super easy to get great results. If you are willing and able to put in the effort, and time, to learn and customise the Fuji, then the the better Fuji lenses make it the obvious choice. One other kinda side note, if you shoot RAW photos, I think the canon RAW files are better, but for JPG the Fuji gives you lots of options to really tune in the jpg files, and they can be amazing straight out or camera.

The 22mm is a really good lens, sharper for sure and great in low light at f2. To be fair though, the 14-45 kit lens, although it’s not the sharpest, it’s still a pretty good all around lens. 15-45 is a super useful focal range on this camera, is has image stabilisation built into the lens, and it’s small and light. If could only have one lens for this camera it would probably would still be the kit lens, but if you are going to have two lenses, the 22mm is a great lens to have. The M6 mark II is and excellent camera, I’m sure you would be happy with it.

@markwiemels5 жыл бұрын
This is the top of the line Canon in the M-series (which is there small mirrorless camera line). Most of the negative reviews are about one very specific thing, and that’s the fact that the 4K video doesn’t have the same level of detail as some of the other brands. Outside of that one specific thing, this is one of the best/if not these best Camera you can buy at this price point.
@markwiemels5 жыл бұрын
I would just start with the 15-45 kit lens. Then maybe the 22mm and the 18-55mm as the next to buy, but it depends on the type of video or photography you are doing.
@Alex-Ninja95 жыл бұрын
Is it not a good idea to get only the body and another lens similiar to the one in the kit? I probably wont use the EVF and thought this possibility would be better. The kit here in Spain is 1300 euros and the body alone is 830 euros it seems better to get everything seperate instead of the kit. Was asking about a similiar lens to the one in the kit but with better stabilization.
@markwiemels5 жыл бұрын
Actually, good idea. Get the body only and pick up the EF-M 18-55mm on ebay, lots of used ones in mint condition, and pretty cheap (there is a video on my channel about that lens). It’s a better lens than the 15-45mm anyway.

It should, the only thing I'm not sure about is the 4k video 100 MB/s write speed from the M6 Mark II. Yes, I think the trio would resolve the 32.5mp. Cristopher Frost did a test with the 56mm and seemed to think it did,. I think the 16mm would be fine on a gimbal, just check the gimbal specs. The M6 with the 16 mm would be lighter than most of the full size DSLRs, so should be fine.

@markwiemels4 жыл бұрын
Blessed Mother, that’s a tough one. The speed booster would allow you to use all the glass on an EF lens, which should contribute to better resolution, but it adds extra elements of glass, which almost always hurts resolution. It really is something that would have to be tested to be sure, but my best guess is that it would hurt more than help. Generally speaking the speed boosters are not engineered to the high standards that the lenses are. I think adapting a sigma 18-35 f1.8 would be a very good setup. Smallrig has released a bracket that does the same thing, but does it a bit better. I will try to shoot a video about it.
