Dave, I share your disappointment. I think this camera will be a massive step up from a 6D Mark II in most areas. It will become my new travel camera for sure - unless there is a more professional model hot on its tail I can spend my money on. But this certainly isn't the dream camera we imagined in all of our wildest dreams. Typical Canon. LOL I'm sure it will perform exceptionally well in the real world, but on paper it looks pedestrian. I'm really hoping that a professional 5DSR style mirrorless camera comes out. I would love to sell my 5D Mark IV and add a boatload of resolution at the same time. But it doesn't look like my 1DX2 or 5D are going anywhere anytime soon. LOL

It's quite handsome, I feel. I'm relieved it's less boxy than the Nikon and especially the Sony. Canon struck a balance between typical-DSLR and typical-mirrorless form factors. I'm also glad the grip is sizable. Overall, it's got that pro look.

Ya no dual SD card slot sucks, and we don’t know the software of it. It could have a crop in 4k. They could disable dual pixel af in 4k like the m50. They could do a lot with software to ruin everything. Let’s pray they don’t.

When cameras now have bluetooth why not use it for headphones if they feel that there is no room for a jack? Maybe some market differentiation. Canon 28-70 f/2 Nikon 24-70 f/4 What were they thinking at Nikon?

I don't think bluetooth headphones would be ideal (even though I love my airpods, and being able to use them on a camera would be cool). For professional monitoring you always want to be wired in. Totally true on the lenses. Nikon isn't looking so good anymore.

I'd say Nikon's kit lens 24-70 f4 is competitor with the 24-105 f4 of canon. Both as kit lenses. If you look closely, the lack of marks on the 28-70 f2 seem to indicate it is a prototype and probably won't be ready at lunch but later in the year or next year. Most probably it will come out at the same time as the 24-70mm f2.8 seen in Nikon's prototype table during the events. I would rather own the 28-70 f2 no doubt, but it is to note that the extra 4 mm on the wide side make a difference too. It all will come down to the size/weight and pricing! Good days for consumers in any case! PD: yes I am a Nikon shooter, but I am in aw with these two lenses (28-70 and 50mm 1.2), if this canon camera is released on the $2000 range, with its 30mp, it will be a big hit (even if no IBIS)

I am using Canon M50 at the moment and find that there is no point shooting clips in HD, unless I need a fast auto-focus, because they are usually a bit blurry. While 4K footage when converted to HD gives excellent sharpness, as it should be, but there is noise sometimes in the dark areas. I hope that this new full-frame mirrorless will produce far less noise in 4K and has dual pixel auto-focus so I don't have to switch it to manual.

I love this video. The only thing I would tell you and the community since you mentioned it is the 6D MkII is for taking pics and that's it. The entry level full frame camera got a couple of upgrades but overall disappointed a lot of people. I can see how they could reasonably ask for more but it's a cheap backup camera at best, BUT fulfills that role with no issues.

I have some thoughts about IBIS: It's supposedly 30.3 megapixels. For 4K video, 24 megapixels is ideal because downsampling is clean without pixel binning. So, if they use the digital stabilization like they had in the 6D mark II, they could effectively crop in the sensor to the 24 megapixel mark and then use the space around it for stabilization, I think this is what they will do. This would give you a 1.3x crop for video, which is not terrible. Again... speculation.

The adapter with control ring just adds it to the EF lenses. If you look at all the R lenses you'll see that they all have control rings on the front. That's a nice idea as you could assign it to aperture, iso or whatever you want (hopefully). I would love to come back to Canon for those lenses. The 50/1.2 AF and the small 35/1.8 macro already look badass, plus would love to adapt my old FD 85/1.2 to that body. However if the body has no IBIS, 1 card, no eye-AF, crop in 4K and other things that we have come to expect in this segment / price point then I probably won't bother. We already know it doesn't do 1080p/120 and has poor battery life so those are major downers. Tilty flippy screen tho - yay!

@ 8:52 in the video, the relative sizes of the two cameras are incorrect. You can tell by the size of the two hot shoe mounts. They SHOULD be the same size, but the one on the left is noticeably smaller. Shoe mounts have been standardized in size for decades, which calls into question how much smaller the new mirrorless camera actually is. Just by eyeballing it, I'd say that the mirrorless camera is represented as being about 3/4 to 4/5 its actual size. Oops!

I realize that, but it appears to be two separate pics put side-to-side and then some relatively meaningless lines drawn on the composite. The hot shoe size has been standardized across ALL manufacturers for decades. It is the only known size item in the pic that can be reliably compared. Frankly, I don't know why they placed the various lines where they did. The bottom one appears to match the back of the mirrorless camera, while the top indicates the front of the mirrorless lens. However, it would have made much more sense if the lines were aligned from the sensor plane so that the two cameras could be compared from a more meaningful point. The "top, middle" line appears to be aligned with the DSLR's lens mount, while the bottom rear line doesn't appear to be aligned with anything. Maybe it was supposed to be aligned with the sensor plane of the DSLR, but the flange distance on E mount is larger than that considering that there is a shutter, mirror box, etc. that have to fit between the flange and the sensor. I'm not knocking Canon, just saying that someone at Canon was, IMO, careless putting that pic together and was trying to make their new mirrorless camera appear more the size of an Olympus PEN-F than a Sony/Nikon mirrorless camera. I just hope that Canon doesn't cripple the video as they have with their recent DSLR camera releases. Even given Canon's color science, it is getting increasingly hard for A LOT of camera buyers to justify the prices, given the relatively lackluster performance/features.

Exciting times - Canon FF mirrorless with flip screen. I've just tried out the Nikon Z7 and I really liked it, the screen and EVF made it really easy to focus peak and the AF seemed to work well with the Z lenses and F mount lenses. Thanks to Sony we have a lot of competition in the market. Ironically I'm not big fan of the A73 because I didn't really like the EVF and rear screen, but the camera has sold like hot cakes and made the competition up their game.

I couldn't test that but Ive always been very happy with colour for stills and video. I find Nikons video files need very little doing to them a bit like Canons. The thing about the Z cameras that I don't think will get mentioned until people get used to them is the screen and evf. Ive used the A73 and I really didn't like the 'feedback' user experience because neither the screen or the viewfinder are particularly good. I think Jordan (the video guy) at Dpreview mentioned this as well. The focus peaking is very nice to, it seems to show up on virtual everything I tried it on. Its so good I managed to manually focus pretty fast - something I must admit Im not very good at.

Looks pretty powerful. Some of these lenses, particularly the 28-70 f/2 are incredible. The main question is whether it has IBIS. If not, that would be a major negative. Also, the prices of the lenses could be steep. The fully-articulated screen is an excellent plus, and is something that people have been asking Sony to do for a while now. Overall, this should be great for vloggers with the cash for it, although the full-frame Panasonic and a7sIII could compete depending on their specs.

Oh yeah! This camera is looking good so far. I'm using a pair of M50 bodies for video now, but based on these specifications I'm thinking of trading in my Nikon gear I use for photos and going with one of these depending on the price of this. I think the 28-70 and 50 f1.2 will be outside what I want to spend, so I'd probably just go with the kit lens for now. The (potential) one card slot is a letdown, but I'm not caring too much about the (potential) no IBIS. I can easily do vlog style stuff with the M50/11-22mm IS lens and it looks fine. Here is hoping for 120 fps 1080p no crop and 4k no crop. Looks wise... I think it looks fine, not that I really care about that (utilitarian is okay with me). I'm glad it has a good deal of physical buttons and that the grip looks nice and tall. I'm really not a fan of short grips.

I just don't think a LP-E6N Battery will fit in the R camera as shown when compared to the 5D IV. The battery compartment would be too small in my opinion. Especially if a card slot is snuggled in there as well. Something is off...

I have a 5D IV and the LP-E6N is a substantial part of the grip. I've seen another comment on another forum which indicated that the image showing the flash mount on this R body versus the 5D body's flash mount appears small as well. My gut tells me that size comparison photo has the R's proportions just a bit smaller than they really are. Why??? All just speculation on my part I suppose.

looking at it for all day.. it actually does look like a hmm well let's call it a button. like arrows left and right. it could be just touch-y instead of press-y. like slide finger over that and it moves photos left to right? but then the screen is touch screen so swiping left and right on the screen would do that and one would not need extra button for that. what has only two ways of adjusting... zoom. focus. MYSTERY! :D

It basically means it can autofocus almost in the dark. something mirrorless(and the new nikon Z series too it seems) seem to struggle with in the dark. most mirrorless only can/could do AF in -1 or -2 EV conditions.

It looks like there is a 3rd ring on these new lenses. I think the control ring adapter is most likely to add that 3rd option to older EF lenses. I guess this is Canon's response to Sony's buttons on their lenses. I do think a lot of people use the custom buttons for eye AF. I suspect other than just controlling aperture, iso, shutter speed that the new ring might be used for custom functions like to digital punch in for focus?

The one thing about this camera is does this mean the end of the EOS-M line? If Sony has shown us anything, it’s that when these companies bring out a FF line, the APS-C line is sort of left behind. This isn’t even the same mount so there is no upgrade path for people with EOS-M cameras. So basically they need to change systems and dump all their lenses. Kinda sucks for new EOS-M adopters.

The ef m line up is not meant for pro work, I have both 5d3 and m50, not looking to change but if I did the EOS R will replace the 5d. The m lenses are tiny and they are good for travel and walk around

Deal breakers - Single card slot, only UHS1 SD, non removal of the LP filter, and no BSi sensor. I'm heavily invested in Canon but I continue to see mediocre bodies. They continue to make great glass but recent additions are mostly minor upgrades. Disappointed. I'm sticking with my 5D3 begrudgingly for now.

Maybe pick up a little Canon M50 with the 22mm f2. It’ll satisfy your Mirrorless craving without breaking the bank and you can keep using your 5d3 as your main cam

Agreed. I'm stuck with a 6D that needs replaced and this is a let down. It's a mirrorless 5D4 with a flippy screen. It better be priced well and that AF better be fast...it's not gonna be a sucky camera but I'm not convinced that it's gonna be a competitor to the current market offerings either.

Thanks for the thought Dave but I have a good selection of L glass. I'm not about to buy anything except EF lenses now but I must say the 28-70 F2 seems interesting. I guess I'll just have to settle with my 24-70 2.8II. I honestly was hoping so much for from this mirrorless since I bypassed the 5DIV. I tend to skip every other release because of Canon's conservative approach.

Thanks Aidan, I'm fully aware. I'm not found of adaption kits and in fact some feel with the different mounts will come uncertainty. www.canonrumors.com/opinion-canon-is-causing-its-own-problems-with-the-rf-mount/ The EF mount was widely criticized when introduced in 1987 and orphaned the previous FD mount but in the long run it was wise allowing optical formulas with 1.2 lenses. I have one camera with an EVF and I certainly see their use especially when you can live view the image before you make the picture. Presently all of that matters little to me right now. I shoot in a studio environment and use a handheld light meter to measure the incident light readings. Canon's conservative nature may push me to wait a while for another camera. That's fine with me, I have to work on my craft. A new camera isn't going to make me take better pictures.

Let's see what codec they will be using for 4K video. And please please please don't let it be Motion JPEG. Quality wise MJPEG is bit superior to H.264 and H.265 I know but a minimal quality gain doesn't justify that level of storage space increase.

I don't mind cropped 4K. The alternatives are scaling, which eats up CPU power and drains the battery very quickly, or recording *bigger* than 4K resolution.

sony user but came from canon so i would love to see if they finally did mirrorless better than the crap they have made. i don't like the button layout also seems a bit off but i would love to see how the grip feels. however my main camera would still be my sony it hasn't failed me yet and canon for me has a bad habit of making cameras fit in between and not letting it go crazy. But im also hoping they dont have the crop issue in the 4k that would be frustrating to see.

If this new EOS-R mount will not work with EOS-M, this will be a punch in the gut for the APS-C user. Which means canon will have 3 separate mount. Not a smart move since EOS-M did pickup steam for a lot of V-logger users. A lot of youtubers would recommend M50. I hope canon has a solution.

If you never use Sony mirrorless, the cropped lenses are use a lot by videographer to achieve the super 35 look. Also if the cropped user wants full frame lens which canon did not make their APS-C line, they virtually handicap one system over other.

I don’t think the RF lenses will be compatible on your DSLR because of the flange distance difference. You can put EF on RF but not the other way around.

Dave Altizer I know that’s the usual way, but it may be interesting for Canon to do this (if possible, you can just make a spacer or some kind of metabones thing) because you can have a DSLR and a Mirrorless Canon and share lenses between the systems!
