I'm hyped for this camera!! As a portrait photographer I'm hoping it will drop the weight of my current kit. Its compelling to see where Canon go from here. At least they are showing signs of moving into the Mirror less market in a more serious manner. The ergonomics and Glass are always the primary determining factor for my gear choices. Good times for us all creatives with more options being released.

Yay it got MPEG-4 AVC / H.264 for video at least. No more MJPEG like in the 5D MK IV. Motion JPEG takes 10x more space than H.264 so I am really happy about that upgrade.

Yep... the spec sheet did dampen my enthusiasm. No 120fps 1080p is rough. That was the most go/no feature outside of the flip screen. The single SD is rough as well given all of the $2k DSLRs years ago had dual slots and it's a nice feature to have for photos. It's like these companies know what a lot of people want as a feature set and are specifically excluding something to be added/removed from future models. Now I'm hoping Panasonic went with phase-detection AF on their rumored full-frame.

Everything is being compared to the new a7iii, which is killing the game. Only issue on that front is affordable lenses. The tamron 28-75 f2.8 is a brilliant answer to that though.

I think it will have a 120 mbps full frame 4k and the higher bitrate cropped super 35 4k and that is how they can do 4x the bitrate that the other full frame 4k cameras do.

No 1080p at 120fps, no dual SD card slots, no IBIS. All things the Sony a7iii has. Would go a7iii (still), Nikon Z7, then maybe this for full frame mirrorless. Major opportunity missed here. I'm a Canon fan. Was ready to stick with Canon to upgrade to full frame mirrorless since I own the M50 and love it. But, will probably switch to Sony at some point in the near future do to the disappoint after learning these specs.

No one mentioned the -6 EV. No other camera comes close! Concert, weddings, etc where flash is used but ambient is dark, this camera will be the GO TO camera!! ...all the other specs wont matter if the shot is blurry...

The only people who hate MJPEG are those who don't spend time having to scrub through the time-line. The benefit of All-I, like MJPEG, is there is little temporal compression so when you're editing, your computer doesn't have to keep looking at earlier or later frames to construct the image. For that alone, the EOS R will be easier to edit than the C100 (which is one flavor of H.264; higher end Cinema cameras another story of course). Anyway, THAT is the prime benefit, less taxing for computer, NOT greater bit-depth or other misunderstandings about video compression. The C100 has a 24x14mm sensor with a 6.4um pixel pitch. The R will have a 36x24 pixel sensor with a 5.36um pitch. So it won't be as low-light a monster as the Cinema line, but it won't be that bad either. What is it, a 20% loss of light sensitivity? Though my guess is with better sensor fab and DPAF tweaks the R will match the Canon Cinema cameras in many situations. As for LOG GAMMA profiles. Anyone who knows anything about me knows what I think should be done with them in an 8-bit space ;) (avoid except in very harsh lighting conditions) My guess is they'll include C-LOG if you don't mind losing some color for lower contrast (wider DR). People will still buy Canon Cinema cameras for the XLR inputs and big batteries. That will NEVER change. But an R vs an A7. We have a ballgame now! :)

I owned the Canon 1DC for three years and only shot MJPG 4K. It does not play well on almost any computer. In fact I took the footage to an Apple store and loaded the footage on an iMac Pro and it still could barely handle it. MJPG is not the same as the new codecs in the EOS R. The EOS R has All-I and IPB. The All-I should in theory run smoothly on computers without conversion which is not the case with the MJPG

I've never had a problem with MJPG. Every computer is different. MJPG will do well on a PC with a fast hard drive because it needs to serve each frame. H.264 (MPEG4) needs CPU (or GPU) power to decompresses the data. I don't doubt Apple had a problem with it. Unless it's Prores/Quicktime, Apple don't give a darn ;) My guess is Premiere on Apple would deal with it just fine. Maybe someone with that experience will comment, unless that's what you use.

I think it's actually better than a Z6 because of the auto focus, also because most of us have Canon lenses, but we'll have to wait and see if the quality is great, because the Sony A7III is a beast when it comes to photo and video quality.

So it’s a Full Frame M50. Nothing more, nothing less. The fact iso is lower on 4K already shows 4K will be cropped. I’m so disappointed. I was hoping for at least 1080@120. That was almost the only thing I wanted. As an M50 owner, should I just buy an A7iii as secondary camera (which will then be my primary...)?

I’m a new a7iii owner and have been very impressed with it. I’ve also really dialed in my color on it and finally feel satisfied with the color. The m50 is a wonderful little vlog camera, but if the new “a6700” comes out with a flip up screen, I’d go with that for vlogging and having the a7iii as an a cam

Well I guess I am the only one that is excited for this camera. Full frame M50. I know that I am in the minority but I am still no fan of Sony. More excited for Panasonic full frame than A7siii. Though for me who is still not using 4k that much I think that the "6d MKii" mirrorless looks appealing (fitting words I know). M50 with headphone jack, big grip, optional battery grip, card slot in the side. It sounds like the perfect FF camera for me.

No DCI 4K it means 4K is crop atleast 1.8-2x because it's same sensor from 5d-IV with same processor so sensor reading rate is the same (or less to prevent overheating in smaller camera ) with less resolution mean more crop . But it can be avoided by speedbooster (in the future) . The big thing is 1080 HDR .......I think it can output 10bit internally or atleast has 10 bit output via HDMI . Honestly with this specs this is enough for KZbinr or B camera and you can't expect canon to put the pro features in their non-cinema line . PS, IMO Nikon is much more appeal to me.

Canon isn't trying to compete. They needed to come out with a next generation camera. This is a repeat of what Sony did when they entered the video game market when they released the Playstation. Except in this case, both Nikon and Canon put out Nintendo 64s in response. Hell, I was hoping for one of them to at least put out a Dreamcast. I am a Canon shooter, so I was looking forward to what they were going to put out. I already purchased the A7iii, but I said that if Canon put something out truly amazing, I would trade it in and get the Canon mirrorless camera. It looks like I will be keeping my Sony, and continuing my investment in that system.

All Canon cameras I know can be operated by mains voltage. shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/ac-adapter-kit-ack-e6 There are cheaper third party ones for those who want to live dangerously. Note that USA charging is not same as continuous shooting. I have a Canon camera with USB charging an while it is charging your are limited to viewing the images. You cannot shoot.

Yes that’s a great option. Just a little pricy and way less convenient than the standard usb cable. However I was misinformed. If you use the new LP-E6N battery it’ll charge over usb

We’ll have to wait and see, but if things go as these initial leaks suggest... It would prove once again that Canon’s crippling mindset isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Clickbait drama aside, I actually think Nikon’s first try at mirrorless looks far more ballsy, and in tune with what the current market demands (Sony, Panasonic or Fuji don’t hold back their cameras, they go all out).

I'm not sure if I agree with your take regarding USB charging. To my understanding, the older battery pack EL-E6 is the exception. EL-E6N can be charged via USB, according to the spec sheet. Good video, though.

Yea I would go with Sony because all you need is to purchase a canon to Sony mount adaptor and you just unlocked the best of canon with lens and you also have the best of Sony with there body’s and specs. That’s a money saver. 👌🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

If this Canon has no IBIS, that is a bad miscalculation by Canon. Just as having a single card slot is a miscalculation for both Nikon and Canon. Will Canon still sell a ton of these even without IBIS and without dual card slots, certainly, that is a lock. Vloggers will love the articulating screen. Just like Nikon, Canon knows it has a huge fanbase with Canon lens collections that have been waiting for a Canon fullframe camera to use. Expect presales similar to Nikon's. Canon, like Nikon may stop their fanbase from defections, but maybe not all of them. The comments I am seeing today on facebook photo groups around the world, that include many Canon users, is that this is a dissapoinment in many areas. Some Canon folks that were thinking about switching to Sony (whom I had advised to wait until they saw what Canon would bring), now say it is not enough from Canon, and they are going ahead and jumping to Sony, anticipating even better Sonys to be announced in a few weeks. The real target here was Sony, and both these cameras from Nikon and Canon answer some wants of their fanbase, but neither one does very much to knock Sony off its leadership in total performance of fullframe mirrorless cameras. IMHO both Nikon and Canon did NOT want to cannibalize their DSLR sales. I truly expected more from both Nikon and Canon.Maybe next generation of these cameras, but then how far ahead will Sony be by then. Sony isnt standing still and waiting on them, ever. Oops and dont forget Panasonic which is set to announce their own fullframe mirrorless by the end of September. Interviewed Nikon executives had said their target was Sony so they could become the world's largest overall camera seller (which Canon already is), but maybe they only wanted to stop folks jumping to Sony. If Nikon only gets current Nikon lens owners (a huge group), that alone wont be enough to make Nikon the World's #1 camera seller. Sony has no DSLRs to sacrifice, so it is easier for Sony to put its best into their fullframe mirrorless. Both Nikon and Canon did have more to lose if they killed off their DSLR sales with these fullframe mirrorless cameras, so I understand their thinking. Still somewhat disappointed these first ones aren't more complete. Cheers

I like my A7R3 :D But as a prior Canon shooter, and to this day a Canon lover, I am happy to see them moving in this direction. However, Sony has 3 generations of Cameras ahead of them, so the battery life and Card Slot issues that Sony was notorious for in previous Gens is sort of expected in these first gen Nikon and Canon full frame mirrorless Cameras, and in the scope of things, they are releasing decent Cameras for their first gen of FF mirrorless, it's just basically a game of catch up now since they decided to do this after giving Sony a multi-generation lead on FF mirrorless technology with little competition.

IBIS is as important for stills as for Video. You can get better quality pictures and lower ISO with longer exposure. This is a real issue and makes this camera big no for me.

The big question is - are those specs real? CIPA is usually wrong, like on a Z series it was 300% lower than the real world test. All depends on a way of shooting. And let's not forget that this is a photo camera in a first place. For a great video get C700 FF. ))

Hopefully you have to WAFFLE and Canon surprises us with better specs. With these specs even the Nikon Z6 is looking good...if the IBIS and autofocus is good. Otherwise I'm going Sony or maybe wait for the Panasonic full frame.

The more I learn the less excited I am for this camera! The deal breakers for me are mostly the no dual cars and if the 4k is cropped. Otherwise I could potentially live with the other lackluster specs... Canon has all of their lenses tho and so that still has me thinking but ultimately I may be going Sony 😐

Not having dual card slots is a disappointment, but there isn't an excuse for no ibis. Even if this only for the 2000$ price. This better be wrong or be planning on including those features in the other mirrorless. If they don't I'm gonna switch to Sony.

@@uxo2255 LOL. I loved my 70D. If Canon would stop handicapping their cameras I would have gone back in a heartbeat. Super slow mo at 720? It's dumb stuff like that that, for all the stupid things Sony does (like make their G Master class so expensive) that makes me hate the business model of Canon. At least Sony puts basically the same stuff in their bodies no matter what model you want.

Very disappointed. I expected Canon and Nikon to offer at least the same as Sony. But nope. No ibis or 120fps for Canon users at same price. 1 card slot just go to show this camera is not for the future. Big no for me as a Canon shooter and I will not be buying this camera. And seems like I have to move to Sony to get decent mirroless FF. I'm wondering why these cameras need new mount if there isn't even a eye auto focus. Relly looks like Canon is just milking it rather than offering quality and professional features of 2018.

Sigma 18-35 is not an EF-S lens. Only Canon makes EF-S lenses.
