Really glad it is working out for you! The last body I thought was worthy of a purchase was the 5D MkII... until this one. Total game changer coming from that body. So many more photos of fast moving subjects (bees/flies and birds) are in focus. It really is crazy. Don't hesitate to use 8K 30fps video (23MP at 4:5) for capturing that even more perfect moment or 4K 120fps for social media worthy images.

I have been waiting patiently for it to be restocked and now it's available and I just plunked down some $$$ to purchase one. It should be arriving the first week of March 2021. Currently I using the 5d4 mark iv and III. The video segment that spoke of the memory cards, it just occurred to me that I will need to purchase the CF Express cards. I also noticed that in your video that you used the UHS-I SDXC Memory Card and instead of the UHS-II. So I presume it's OK to use the UHS-I version, which I have plenty of. The majority of my business is wedding photography, so I want to make sure I am set with the proper memory cards. Love your videos and work, which only inspires me to be better.

Great camera. I am hopeful they will get this overheating problem fixed soon! I don't use it for our video until then, that is all. Weird it go so hot that it tooks hours to work again...? Love the mirrorless though. Never going back to DSLR. You are right about the viewfinder too. I have had two of my cards fail back to back. I was shooting my first corporate gig in months and wanted to try it. For some reason the backup was corrupted too. Not a huge deal, as the client is coming back in two weeks to reshoot and I got new cards again! Probably a firmware issue. It is new.

Very well done review with actual video of viewfinder and how the camera reacts to shooting situations and good demonstration of eye and animal focus . The medium jpeg vs large is a good approximation for r6 vs r5 resolution and most folks would be happy with r6. One question I had is although EVF shows actual live image , the brightness of the evf image can be misleading to what is truly captured and displayed on the rear lcd which seems little darker than what is shown on the evf. The auto or manual brightness adjustments helps but I am not sure it is possible to always match evf image brightness to lcd image brightness , thoughts ?
@ShaneLongPhotography4 жыл бұрын
Great comment! I would totally agree with there. Especially since your eye is constantly adjusting to the ambient light and then you put it in the viewfinder, it can be a little misleading. I have my EVF set the medium brightness. That is why I love having the histogram in the viewfinder!!! It shows a consistent graph of where my brights and darks are so I always know if my highlights are blown no matter if I am using the EVF or rear LCD. Hope that helps!

Hey Eric! Great question. I will be doing an R versus R5 video in the coming months. I didn't expect the R5 to be that much better than the R but wow it is on a whole other level. Just two nights ago I was shooting the father daughter dance at a wedding. With the same setting the R couldn't focus on the dad/daughter. I had to flip it to manual focus. The R5 locked focus instantly and had no problem face detecting during the whole dance. I can also shoot the prime lenses at 1.2 with running subjects and the R5 has no problem nailing it. The R is good. the R5 is phenomenal. Hope that helps!

The best most 'natural feeling' photography (!) review of the R5 I have seen to date. One can tell you don't have to convince yourself or anybody else of features you don't truly use! You confirm what I am thinking, awesome focus, my EF lenses will work well and finally the dynamic range to push those shadows that made me envious of Sony and Nikon cameras for the better part of the last decade. It finally seems ok to upgrade from my 5D. Very well done Shane, you deserve a subscription! However, I must say, that I dislike the smaller body. I've held and played with the R6 several times now. The 5d felt more comfortable size wise. My thumb extents >2cm over the top of the camera and I have medium sized hands. For my taste they could have kept the 5D size. I wonder if I'll ever get used to having to bend all fingers all the time instead of a more 'full size grip'.
@ShaneLongPhotography4 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much! Glad it was helpful! I totally understand where you are coming from on camera size. People vary so much in that regard! I am glad they didn't go any smaller.

When i shoot with my 5d3 i almost forget that i have the camera in my hands and that is a huge must on my list and the sony a7 serie didnt give me that feeling. amazing camera but i couldnt see me shooting profesional with them. But the r5 and r6 feels like smaller 5d cameras but with so much more umpfh and power in them

Great review. I just subscribed. I have a question on rolling shutter. You took some photos of your son swinging a baseball bat using electronic shutter (20 fps). Did you see any jello effect on the baseball or the bat at all?
@ShaneLongPhotography4 жыл бұрын
Hey Kenneth! Great question. Yep. Some of the 20fps baseball bat and ball photos had some distortion in the bat and ball. Looked a little like a bent golf club does during a swing. That is the downside of electronic shutter. Shooting with the mechanical shutter would solve that. But many of the photos didn't have distortion and were totally usable! Hope that helps!

Hi Shane, your review is one of the reseasons I decided to buy the R5 for weddings. Thank you so much for all the great info. Question, I used servo and face tracking on a wedding day. I tried to photograph the writings on flowergirl's robe, but the focusing keeps going back to her head, or the back of her head to be exact. What would you do in this case, turn off face tracking quickly and then turn it back on?
@ShaneLongPhotography4 жыл бұрын
Glad you got it! It is amazing! I hope to someday made a video of how I customized it to quickly switch between focusing modes. If you set up the camera to use the "touch and drag" focus, then even when you are in the face detection mode you can drag and touch other things to focus on. I think I talk about it a little in this video. Otherwise just switch to single point AF, and then back to fact detection mode. Hope that helps! Have fun!

Hello Carlos! Sorry for the slow time to respond. I had to take a break from KZbin as I was super busy with photoshoots and family life. The regular shutter is so quiet, I usually just use that. But sometimes for sports I use the ES to make sure I capture the moment. I had used the ES at church, and the lights there gave me banding with the ES. So I went back to mechanical. Hope that helps!

I want to purchase an R5 OR R6 but where are they in stock?

They are hard to find right now! Looks like the next round of R5's come in around Oct 20th but I am not sure how long the wait list is on them. I am not sure on the R6.

Thanks for this review! Glad to see I'm not the only person using the big wheel to switch between AF points. Because I upgraded from the EOS R, I had already trained myself to do everything without the big wheel because it didn't exist on the EOS R. So when I got the EOS R5 I had to decide if I wanted to use the big wheel like I did with the 5D Mk4 or do something different with it. Because I was goi g to shoot a few weddings with the EOS R5 and the EOS R side by side I figured it would be best to keep them as similar as possible and I could always change things up once my second EOS R5 arrived. Using the big wheel for focus modes has been super convenient and faster than the way I did it on the EOS R. Someone coming directly from the 5D Mk4 to the EOS R5 might be tempted to continue using the big wheel the way they had been on the 5D Mk4, but coming from the EOS R it was very easy to find a completely different use for the big wheel and I'm happy about that. I like your tip about using the vertical selection to focus just on the couple coming down the center of the aisle. On my way to a wedding right now and I'll have to try that out!
@ShaneLongPhotography4 жыл бұрын
We think the exact same! Because I am still shooting with the R I feel like I haven't yet fully customized my R5 because I have to dumb it down to in some ways match the lack of customization of the R. Hope the wedding went well!
@JaredRibic4 жыл бұрын
@@ShaneLongPhotography - I'm now using two R5 bodies but even though I'm free to configure them however I want (because I don't need them to be similar to the EOS R) I'm really happy with the way they're set up right now. With the EOS R I had to press the Mfn button and roll the top wheel (index finger) to select the focus mode but using the big wheel on the R5 is so much more convenient. Once in a while the old 5D Mk4 muscle-memory kicks in and I catch myself trying to use the big wheel for aperture but I'll get over that soon enough.
@cindywalsh1878 Жыл бұрын
So how to you control aperture if you’re using the big wheel for AF?
@JaredRibic Жыл бұрын
@@cindywalsh1878 - Since I didn't have a big wheel on the EOS R, I got used to using the top dial (same as the MODE dial) for aperture. To keep everything as similar as possible between cameras, I set up the R5 and R3 bodies the same way for aperture control. I'm used to it now.

Thanks, Shane. Good--almost too good--review. I hope I'm safe in assuming you have no affiliation with Canon. While I'm not a wedding photographer, I do shoot a 5D4 and a 7D2 for editorial, documentary, and some landscape and architectural. In part because of your video, I'll be buying a 5R---probably late winter, if they're available by then.

Glad it was helpful! If I owned that lens, I totally would! I bought a 24-105 way back when I first started, but I sold it off pretty quick as I like the look of prime lenses more for my style and needs. But I think the RF24-105 has really fast AF if you are doing outdoor sports it might work well. Or if you are doing studio portraits with flashes. All the best!

R5. It Just even being able to have the whole screen to select AF points is worth it to keep up with all the action. It is faster and more responsive. But either will make great photos!

Thanks to encouraging news from your video & others, I'm getting very tempted to get an R5, plus one lens, either the 85 1.2 or the 50 1.2. I have the EF 85 1.2 II, tried & sent back the EF 50 1.2, neither really completely did it for me. I can afford only one, any observations you know of to help make a decision?
@ShaneLongPhotography4 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful! The R5 will make a big difference for you as the AF is much more accurate with with prime lenses. Both the RF 50 1.2 and RF 85 1.2 are significantly better that their EF counterparts. Crazy sharp, beautiful bokeh, very low CA. If I had to pick one, I would probably start with the 50. It is just a little more versatile. That said, if you specialize in portraits/headshots the 85 might fit your work better. Hope that helps!

Ok Shane, as if I need to watch the 1 millionth R5 review "GEESUS" ... LENSES, I get the Lens and Camera IBIS in the RF lens, However for those who have all the EF Lenses and can get the adaptor ... Have you tested shooting the EF 85 f/1.2 L II to the RF 85 f/1.2 L and see anything between the 2 on the R body that would bring a person to buy the body and adaptor? And do you think the R should have ben give 2 CFExpress slots vs 1?
@ShaneLongPhotography4 жыл бұрын
Hey Jeffrey! I used to own the EF 85 1.2 but sold it for the EF 85 1.4 which I sold for the RF 85 1.2. :) The EF 85 1.4 worked great on the R5. As do all the other adapted lenses. They work better than on DSLRs. Here is the adapter video I made. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIqWZWd9oaijeLM And no, I like the CFexpress and SD combo. Lets me not have to buy all new memory and I don't need super speed in slot two as I am just running backup jpegs in it. Hope that helps!

Hello! It should automatically when you don't put it up to your face. Just hold it out in front of your body! If it doesn't, press Menu, then press the yellow tab, then press 3, then Screen/viewfinder display should be set to AUTO1. Yours might be set to "viewfinder". Hope that helps!

Good informative video. I've been waiting for my delivery about 1 month, here in the UK. A question how do find using flash with the R5. Being a mirrorless camera, do you find a difference. From a DLSR.
@ShaneLongPhotography4 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful! I don't notice a difference, though I haven't used my flash a lot in the month. I still do the same like I did with my DSLR. I set the exposure without the flash on and then turn on the flash at manually to add however much fill I want. The shot with the soccer player in the video was taken with a three flash setup. Worked totally like my 5D Mark IV did. Hope your camera comes soon!!!
