Great interview! People seem to not think about pixel density... I've found that the noise issue for high vs low megapixel cameras is a myth too... the way I reduce the images from the 5dsr and now the R5 has way better actual low light capability vs my lower mp cameras. The 90d is also ridiculous in this way too. 32 mp without the need to crop so much is great.

I think the R has vastly improved since its release with the firmware updates. Why use the viewfinder rather than the screen? Battery life?
@mbvglider3 жыл бұрын
For me, I use the screen for portrait shoots and things like that, but if it's action, especially at longer focal lengths, I think it's easier to aim the camera when its lens is in line with your eyesight, so you can keep shots centered. I like to keep the EVF auto-switcher off because if I flip the screen closed, I can still use the EVF if I put my eye to it, but it annoys me when I'm shooting with the screen. I think the EVF actually uses more battery than the screen.

It depends on the sensor technology and how many stops you are brightening the image. Until the R5 canon sensor, older Canon sensors suffered with noise if you raised shadows more than three stops so it was better to raise the ISO. Nikon, Sony, Pentax etc use ISO invariant sensors so suffered less from noise when raising shadows.

I sold all of my DSLR gear (and EF lenses) and made the switch to Canon's mirrorless (R5/R6). I can honestly say that I don't regret my decision at all, mirrorless is clearly the wave of the future. Eye-AF is a game-changer for me, IBIS is sweet, C-RAW is amazing, so many things to like about the new system. I agree with Scott, I can't list any negatives with the new bodies and lenses. Oh, and the reason the new RF 70-200 is shorter is because the old EF 70-200 was always "extended" (the housing was a fixed length with the elements moving inside), The RF lens is the same length as the old when fully zoomed. The old way is better because no air is sucked into the lens as it zooms because it doesn't extend, but Canon says the new one has vents that filter out any dust and moisture.

So the one comment I will make regarding the megapixel race is and the swimming pool story.. why would you even discuss the number of megapixels in your camera with a client? I'm in my 15th year of shooting weddings. Never once have I had a client ask me how many megapixels my camera has. I've had them ask what camera I use (because magazine and online articles tell them they should ask -- even though they couldn't tell you the difference between a 5D Mark IV or an R6/R5 if their life depended on it), but never megapixels. To me, that's just not a realistic conversation to be having with clients. I leave it at "I will deliver high resolution files to you" and that's more than enough to satisfy them.

If you are a wedding photographer, then you are also a salesman. Good salesmen are always able to point out value & differentiation. I can tell many stories about this. If you cannot articulate value, it’ll be harder to land customers in a competitive market. You are welcome to disagree. (fwiw I was asked many times about MPs when I shot weddings, but this was during the great MP increase. It was 2MP when I started and was just getting into the 20s when I finished- that’s a huge difference)
@ResurrectedBrush2 жыл бұрын
@@MMaven I'm always selling value to my clients. I've just never had them ask or care about MP as a number value. I have had them ask what size prints they can order from the images I deliver (or if they don't ask, I sell them on that), which I believe is a far greater value to them, and much easier for them to understand (if they aren't photographers), than a technical number.

Excellent practical discussion of the various bodies when in use by a pro. The white lenses are done for both technical and marketing reasons. Canon over the years has said that the white color was to reduce the heat load on the larger lenses with larger glass when shooting outdoors. They have also said it was to protect fluorite elements that have less chroma aberration but are more fragile. The white color will significantly reduce the heat absorbed in sunlight, but it does get a little silly when on the 70-200 there are large black control rings that cover much of the lens barrel. The real answer is probably both for technical and marketing. The white does help reduce heat and the chance of a large lens element shattering, and it makes the lens stand out at big events which helps with marketing. For what it is worth, I did have an old 70-200f2.8L front element shatter when I brought it in from sitting in a hot car to an air-conditioned building. So heat alone can cause a lens to break.
