The Canon R5 is a beast of a camera that’s for sure. It has so many amazing features that can really help you take some incredible photo and video. But because there are so many settings it can take a while to learn all the different features, or even find them to adjust them.
In this video I go over how to adjust a few settings to quickly change between photo and video modes, learn how to set your autofocus eye detection feature for quicker results and more. This video will teach you how to optimize your Canon R5 for greater use, without having to scrub through the ridiculous manual.
TIME STAMPS:
Change between Photo and Video Mode: 2:22
Customize the M-FN button to Swap between Photo and Video: 2:55
Drive Mode (2 second Timer, High Speed Shutter, etc.): 3:47
Adjust Eye Detection for Animals and People: 4:51
Manual Focus Peaking: 5:54
Touch and Drag Focusing: 7:52
Custom Mode Setting: 9:36
Quick Record Button: 11:39
I hope you enjoy!

I had a shoot last night I was doing single shot and need a high speed continuous. You showed me. I needed to learn how to navigate thru different frame rates as well as assigning them to custom modes. You showed me.

Thank you for your video, even a few years delayed! :) I bought the R5 recently, coming from a 5D Mark IV, a 90D and an 80D much earlier, and boy I can relate when you said about the switching from stills to video the first day! 😂 I found your suggestions useful, and I’ve had already setup my R5 the same way in many cases! One thing I couldn’t help not noticing, was the fact that vehicles were also added to the subject priority in AF apart from people and animals, even before doing a firmware update! Mine came with v1.7.0 and I’ve updated it since to v1.9.0.

Thank you so much. It seems so simple, but I couldn't find my M-fn settings once I changed my M-fn button to toggle to video mode. This video showed me how to work the Q button, which I obviously had not previously learned, even though I've been shooting with the R5 for 3 years! Embarrassing, but I had always gotten by with the M-fn button. I am so happy to have learned so much today and will be putting it into practice this weekend! You rock.

Hi Will, great video, keep it up. Have you noticed if the R5 overheats if you jump between video and 120fps video. I do a lot of photography and video for a retail company that requires photographs of the models but they also require slow motion video. It’s a grind now because I use two separate cameras so I recently ordered the R5 in hopes to only have to use one to accomplish what i need. Best!
@willsimpsonphoto
@willsimpsonphoto 3 жыл бұрын
I have found that the R5 will overheat with 4K 120, but not 4K 24 or 60 (I think on the 60, haven’t fully tested that yet). I haven’t had overheat on 1080 at all or photo at all. The new update on the camera. When I film 120 and I get the overheat notice, I can turn it to photo and it never overheats at that point. It’s only constant 120. There is a new firmware update for it that recently came out. Helps Make the times longer. I cover the update on Monday in next video.

Hello Will, 2 - questions for you about how to do on my Canon R5 mirrorless camera (1) How do I set my 2 - second timer delay and (2) How do I focus peak to get sharp landscape shots???
@willsimpsonphoto
@willsimpsonphoto 3 жыл бұрын
sorry for the delay in responding. to set your 2 second timer, put your camera in manual mode. click the button on the back thats a square with a Q in it. left of the info button. Just above the bottom left, theres a box that if you click it that gives you the option to set your 2 second, high speed, etc. On using manual focus for landscapes, I generally set the camera lens about 3 feet from my foreground. set focus point on the subject, use f/11 on a tripod. hope this helps :)

So in whicever 4k setting allows you to do this can you assign the movie cropping to a custom button? (I currently shoot on a sony a7iii that has this and I would miss it!!) Thanks so much dude!
@willsimpsonphoto
@willsimpsonphoto 3 жыл бұрын
hahaha, im pumped this helped so much! However, I be amiss if I didn't say that if you are "video primary" and 4K mainly, specially if you shoot 60fps or higher, the overheat would get in the way. This camera is a photo first camera. The video is incredible but unless you're shooting all 1080 or 4k 24, then just know that it is an issue for heavy video users. On the cropping button, I am not sure as I dont use a video crop. Ive never done it, what instances would you need to do that in?

Thank you for your Canon R5 settings video: I just bought my R5 and have never used video in any camera and I am clueless about video settings. My question: Which of the video settings that you described in this video would be basic settings with which to begin? I will start with taking outdoor videos, but would like to have audio included. PS Thank you for telling me how to turn on the video camera. It was well hidden in the manual!
@willsimpsonphoto
@willsimpsonphoto 3 жыл бұрын
no problem! Glad I could help. All audio will be recorded in 24 fps. If you want to film just basic "home video" style videos, simply use 24 fps (keep your shutter at double the frame rate, so 50). That will give you standard "live action" video and audio

@willsimpsonphoto
@willsimpsonphoto 2 жыл бұрын
I ended up getting a mirrorless because the specs from the 6Dm2 were way better, the speed, space and general focus ability was quite a bit better. Now that being said, I could have gone with a 1Dx but I believe the DSLRs are a dying breed. Not very soon, but sooner than later I think mirrorless cameras will be the industry standard and the new updates, main advances, etc will be with the mirrorless system.

Hello Will, I am very fortunate to now own a Canon R5 & RF f/2.8 24-70mm lens. I only do landscape photography and I never film. I wonder what would be the best set - up in the R5 from A - Z to get the optimum for High-Quality Landscape Images? Also, would you still advise the use of cable - release or not at all? And finally, we are often told to switch - off Image Stabilisation when the camera is placed on a sturdy tripod, would you suggest that we still do that? And if so, do we have to switch (IS) on the lens and the camera body, for I am at a loss with this. I thank you in advance and I have subscribed to you to sort out this minefield of information with the Canon R5 Mirrorless Camera ...
@willsimpsonphoto
@willsimpsonphoto 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Allan! Congrats on your new camera! Its an amazing camera! I have had so much fun with it. Let me see if I can answer all your questions. 1) best set up for the R5 on landscapes - just simply shoot RAW format and shoot in Manual. By shooting RAW you're able to adjust and edit anything in Lightroom, Photoshop or other editing program. Im usually on a 'neutral' color space and auto white balance. 2) cable release? Do you mean a remote shutter? I usually use a 2 second timer or the Canon Connect app and use bluetooth remote. 3) on the IS, i leave it on. I haven't noticed any negative effects when taking photos, whether long exposure or not. If you'd like to turn it off, Menu, red menu 7, Top option IS Mode, turn off - thats for the camera body. For the lens, the switch is on the lens. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions. I was wondering, since the R5 is such a "does many cool things" camera, is there a possible way to set the "touch shutter" to shoot several frames at one time by tapping the "touch shutter" once? Like a "touch shutter" burst mode.

@@willsimpsonphoto- Thank ya Will. Well, the reason I ask that question is because, I'm a Quadriplegic and have very little movement in my right arm with no hand nor finger movement and use a special made "mouth stick" to operate my camera's. Believe it or not I'm pretty darn good at it and have been a photographer since 2003. I "MUST" have a remote shutter for continuous drive mode that I use to operate with my right hand knuckle to push the remote shutter button as that works great for me. But, I can't find a "3 pin" remote shutter port on the R5. Unless the Studio Strobe port is for a remote shutter as well, I SO HOPE. If you' eve read the Birds and Blooms Magazine there is a story about me in the November 2020 issue about my photography story. Thank you so much Will for your time.

@@joehall5549 Wow! Thats quite amazing! For the remote shutter for the R5, I actually use the CameraConnect app by Canon. I tested it out and if your camera is in High Speed Shutter, you can connect the app to the camera, use the remote shutter and if you press and hold the button (on the phone app) it will take pictures as long as you are holding it down .

@@willsimpsonphoto Thank you Will. Thanks for your great tip on the Camera Connect app. I can’t move nor feel my fingers as operating a cell phone is really too challenging & frustrating for me. I have cheap phone anyway, lol. It’ll be much easier for me to use the RS-80N3 remote shutter with a little modification on the remote button by super gluing a rubber piece that‘ll make the button higher and easier for me to push with knuckle. That works great with my Canon T7i. You should see me type with my mouth stick, 40 words a minute. I look like a chicken eatin’ corn, lol. Thanks so much Will.

I literally just ordered an R5 coming from a pair of 6Ds. I'm the same, I don't like to upgrade unless there's a reason, and I feel that the R5 is finally the upgrade I've been waiting for. Just hoping I can get used to not having inbuilt GPS :)

It’s such an amazing camera. It took me a little to adapt to a mirrorless and all the additional features but let me tell you, that camera is incredible! It’s so easy to use (once you’re comfortable obviously) and makes life that much better. I still use my 6D as back up but I’m glad I upgraded.

Travel Cats that’s actually something I will miss. I love having GPS cords embedded even if t did mean having to manual turn off the GPS every time I turn the camera off. There are external GPS units but I don’t use a a cell phone and the on camera one looks bulky

Will Simpson - Exploring Photography Major step up for AF for us. 6D AF was very weak but also made you work harder. Eye AF is the bees knees. I’m thinking of converting my 6D to a dedicated IR, UV or full spectrum camera

did you know that if you press the video start button on top of the camera, it will automatically begin recording C3 video settings? I set my C3 custom video settings to my most used video settings and now when I am shooting stills, I only have to push the video start button on top of the camera to begin shooting video, then press again to seemlessly start shooting stills again. It is very fast. Cheers.

I just bought a R5, I shoot always manual I set my iso to 800 using my flash and sometimes the ISO changes from no where from 800 to a higher or lower ISO I don't have the Auto ISO setting do you know whats going on ? Thanks
@willsimpsonphoto
@willsimpsonphoto Жыл бұрын
two things that I know of that could be occurring. 1) You're accidentally hitting the ISO wheel. If you are aware you're not then probably not this one lol. 2) the other thing that has happened to be is the ISO somehow gets put on AUTO without me knowing how. If you look are your LCD screen and the ISO box in bottom right, does it say AUTO? if so, press the info button until you see the ISO box on the back of the LCD screen. touch it which will open your ISO adjustment, switch it off Auto. This should handle it. When this first happened to me I was super confused because I had it all in manual and yet the ISO would adjust itself. This was what I figured out. If its not those 2, I'm not sure. Maybe if you gave me more details I could work it out.

That’s super weird why it would be greyed out. I checked and whether I’m in manual or AF, movie or photo mode, the option is still available. In menu, AF, #2 MF peaking settings. What lens are you using on it and what firmware are you using?

@@willsimpsonphoto I'm right eye dominant, so I use my right hand for a lot of things. If there is a-left handed camera, I wouldn't want it anyways. It may be a different story for other lefties out there. Or maybe, now that I mention the dominant eye aspect, even some right handers with a dominant left eye would want a different grip placement. Maybe it doesn't even matter. LOL. I live in a right hand world, so I've adapted I suppose. Except for scissors 😁
