I thought about buying a used R6 as people are dumping them cheap but the R6 2 is a huge improvement in so many ways over the original - thanks for the review

The R6 was a very good camera. But if you can swing the R6II or you shoot video, it’s an absolute MUST. Not being able to save custom video settings on the original R6 forced me to part ways with it as soon as this came out. Makes no sense that users can’t save C1-C3 for video at all. Or the fact it can only shoot in manual video or full auto. Just a big head scratch there. The R6II is borderline perfect for nearly everyone. Some users will think they need more resolution, when very few people actually do. I shoot this alongside the R3 and ended up selling one of my R3 bodies after I got this - it’s a VERY excellent camera.

Thanks for including the HDR and focus stacking examples. My R3 will do that but I had never tried it thinking it would be "too fiddly" and "doing it for real" would require external software to do it right. These two examples showed it working extremely well on-scene, in camera. Canon consumers are lucky, by the way, in that Canon distributes many of its software innovations across the pro platforms, regardless of price tier, as they develop them.

Great review as always Ken. I just traded in my Z6 II for this camera and am waiting for it to arrive. Can't wait. While I got some great images on the Z6 II I did feel it got in the way at times as the AF system is workable but a bit behind the curve in its implementation. So seeing your review and hearing that this camera gets out of the way so I can focus on composition is very reassuring. Keep up the great work. I've learned a lot from your videos over the last few years and can't thank you enough.

R8 takes the same pictures. Huge difference is that the R6 II has all the controls you need while the R8 is so tiny it’s missing a lot of controls seasoned users will miss. You can make the same shots with each, just it takes a lot more clicks in the R8

Just trying to share what I know. Big difference is I’m a shooter, NOT a KZbinr. All the KZbinrs have full time employees to shoot videos of them; it’s nearly impossible to get myself on camera since I’m the only one here. Know that since the KZbinrs spend more time talking than shooting what they have to say isn’t that important. See www.kenrockwell.com/tech/2-kinds-of-photographers.htm Also who cares; I want to show the camera close enough so you can see and feel every setting. Thanks!!!!

Fantastic review, I need to set my C1/2/3 settings to the exact ones you have and then do a few customizations for my own shooting because it sounds like you have it dialed in super well. Too bad it does not let you save and recall that data to a downloadable file, it sounds like an oversight and hopefully Canon releases a firmware update to address if they get enough feedback...this is a professional grade camera!

This is what I wanted to hear, thank you! I can’t stand listening to these kids, my kids ages, who say they’ve been shooting for 10 years. I’ve been in love with cameras and photography for the same amount of time as you… I commandeered somebody’s 110 when I was about 8. 8 years later in 1982, my parents finally took my obsession seriously and bought me a beautiful Minolta 35mm. Unfortunately that’s where they stopped taking it seriously and when I wanted to go to school for it, told me being a photographer was a hobby, not a career!🙄 I was defeated. Not anymore though, now that my kids are grown and I finally have money to myself, I’m getting the R6 II, as soon as I have enough saved.😅 I’ve shot Nikon and Canon and much prefer the latter!

I agree with so much with what you said, incredible easy to use camera. I started photography with R50 a year ago and realise I really enjoy it and upgraded to full frame 3 weeks ago. Naturally I gravitated to the R6 mkii coz of the ibis, I would have preferred the size of the R8 but lack of ibis stopped me. I am extremely happy with my R6 mkii and I’m thrilled a pro photographer with years of experience like yourself have such high praises for it. The vertical image can be viewed vertically as shot on the LCD, the setting needs to be changed in the menu settings under the yellow tab with the spanner 🔧 icon, tab #1 choose Auto Rotate for the computer icon only. Then the vertical imagine will fill up the whole screen in camera display.

Thank you for this video review and mini tutorial. I just purchased an R6 MKII and I have no regrets. Coming from a 90D & 5D MKIV user, the R6 MKII is simply amazing. I still use and love my DSLRs but this mirrorless hybrid is on another level. I can use 3 types of Canon lenses on it; RF, EF, & EF-S (adapted). Hopefully Canon will allow for 3rd party RF lenses but for me I’m good being able to adapt my older lenses. Some of my EF & EF-S STM lenses are on another level with the R6MKII. The STM focus motor has no trouble keeping up with the R62’s autofocus. The glass is good enough to meet my needs. I understand no 3rd party lenses is a nonstarter for some pros but for me, I’m good with Canon’s ecosystem as it is. Thanks again - wishing you and your family a safe & blessed holiday season

Dear Ken, it wasn't difficult for me to decide the switch from my 60D to R6Mk2(a giant leap indeed 😂😅). Coupled with the RF135f1.8 I am SO happy. Yes, I am also using my old ef 24-105f4 and EF50mm f1.8 with it. The only problem I am encountering with adapted 24-105 is the communication (between lens and body) error, I cleaned the contacts and continued, and again the error occurs. I guess the lens needs a servicing,. 50f1.8 is still fine, with it the error is a bit rare. Theres a lot more for me to exploit with this beast of a camera. Your words have only reinforced my contentment. Thank you Ken.

Yet another great review! Been shooting professionally with Canon cameras since 2010, and the 1Ds Mk3 took over half a million images, still going strong, as mine 5DmkIV... I bought an R7 2 years ago, and shutter died after 50.000. I bought R6 last year, and shutter died couple of months later, got it replaced under warranty, and after 70.000 images it died again last month, so I bought used R6 as a backup, and this one is dying as well now.... I never experienced anything like it. Actually considering selling them again, and get the R6 MkII, or even R5, as its gets cheaper these days. I dont need the best, the newest, but I like when things work, and these new cameras seem a bit fragile I think, compared to 1Ds & 5D series.

@zosozoso2
@zosozoso2 2 ай бұрын
@@KenRockwellTV Hey Ken, it is indeed! See, the thing with the R6 is, which I found out after buying it, is that in AEB mode the electronic shutter is not available, in the R7 it is. As i shoot real estate and plenty images a day, Im now considering the R6 mkII, the 20-24mp is ideal, as I need fast workflow, and is plenty allready. Still, I got two R6 for same money as one R6mk2, and since I shoot weddings from time to time, 2-3 bodies are preferable. Tough decisions ;-)

I have EOS R and R7. I use R for landscape still with RF 14-35 F4L and EOS R7 with RF24-105 F4L for action. I was thinking of trading the R for the R6 mark ii. How is the build quality between the 2 cameras ? Does not the R have more magnesium alloy? Since i print very large, I think that 30 vs 24 megapixels will have a substantial hit on the PPI. How does the Auto White balance compare between the 2 cameras? Above all, I appreciate the correct Auto White balance. I don't really remember what where the exact colors of sunrise in Iceland in 2019. I like to go back to the original RAW files and see what it really looked like. Thanks a lot !

Besides, I hate the autofocus on my R7 and that autofocus is supposed to be better than on R6 mark ii. I also like the grip much better on the R than on R7 (I own both).

Wonderful review as usual, Ken. Funnily enough, I just today ordered my R6 II, a few accessories, and the RF 800 f/11. Should get them next week, and really looking forward to it. I've been a happy DSLR user for years, but I'd been thinking about adding a mirrorless to my kit. One thing I was wondering about was if I could use my EF lenses, for example my 100-400 II L, with a 1.4x extender and the EF > RF adapter, on the R6 II, and it was your report on this exact topic that really helped me to make my decision. I opted for the 800 f/11 because as hard as I work to improve my photography skills, there's no way I can justify spending 5 figures on a lens (and my wife would have me locked up). But the f/11, from what I've read, seems like a reasonable way to get that extra reach and good results without breaking the bank.

R6 II has a bigger grip and bigger overall size and many more controls than R7. Get R7 for birds or anything where you need the strongest telephoto effect possible and the R6 II for everything else. R7 is unique in having the worlds only self leveling feature, otherwise the r6 II is superior unless you prefer the smaller sensor. Both OM are quite light and portable. Full reviews at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r7.htm and www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/r6-ii.htm thanks!!

I think you'll find the R6II has around 1.5 stops better high ISO performance and also better DR. What do you want to shoot should be driving your buying decision. If you're thinking of wildlife and/or birds, then the R7 may be an attractive idea due to the 1.6x crop. Note that the R6II is only 24mp too, which quite often, for smaller birds or birds that are a distance away, is just not enough. More pixels on the bird(s) is always desirable. I have a R3 and R10 and I really wish Canon had done a pro APS-C MLC right, rather than the crappy effort that was the R7. Poor button UI, no battery grip, poorer high ISO performance than it really should have. Very poor sensor readout speed, so big issues with rolling shutter. A R4 in a R3 body with a 26mp BSI stacked APS-C sensor would have been lovely and I'd have bought it over the R3. Canon's decisions have been very poor in the MLC era imho.

Ken, I noticed that when you showed samples of your favorite R6 Mk 2 photos that the lenses used in all were EF lenses with an EF - RF adapter. Is this because you prefer the old EF lenses (as I do) or a different reason? I’ve tried 3 RF lenses and sold them in short order as my EF equivalent lenses were sharper or as sharp …and they are already paid for.
@KenRockwellTV
@KenRockwellTV 9 ай бұрын
Like most people, I already own everything in EF. Personally today I prefer the RF 14-35/4L and RF 24-240mm, and if I need longer I pull out my EF 100-400 L II on the adapter that lives on it and I’m covered. Unlike Nikon, EVERYTHING Canon has made since 1987 works PERFECTLY on the R cameras, so no need for new lenses unless you want them. Thanks!

I do sport (baseball) and portraiture. I’ve been hanging on for the R5 Mk II which is now in touching distance but this review has made me wonder if it’ll be wasted money. Is it worth waiting for the R5 for portraiture or should I get a 5d mk iv or R6 II which are kinda the same price now…? I also do internet videos but they’d all hack that. No mention of the Focus problem?: " sometimes when the lens is focused way off to start with it can be difficult to acquire focus at very close range"
@KenRockwellTV
@KenRockwellTV 6 ай бұрын
If that happens, its an issue with the lens. See my reviews where I test each lens for this www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/index.htm. For instance, the RF 100-300/2.8L www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/100-300mm.htm immediately zips between the closest focus distance and infinity; I can't recall any lenses having this problem offhand on the EOS-R system. Hi Katie! It works GREAT on the R6 II!!!! All the lenses and bodies in the EOS R system work great with each other. The 24-105 f/4L IS USM is a bigger, heavier, better-built lens for serious use and is magnificent on the R6 II, full review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-105mm.htm. The RF 24-105 IS STM is a very light weight and also super-sharp lens, with superb stabilization, full review at www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-105mm-stm.htm. I'd get the STM if weight or price matters, and I'd get the f/4L if sensitively in low light at the 105mm end or physical toughness was more important. Honestly I prefer the RF 24-240mm for its longer range www.kenrockwell.com/canon/eos-r/lenses/24-240mm.htm, but you didn't ask that. Thanks!

@@KenRockwellTV Thanks again. I picked up the 24-105 f/4. Definitely well-built and a high quality lens. I was a little surprised that the RF 70-200 mm f/4 is a hair lighter. Trying to decide the 70-200 f/4 vs 2.8 right now. I can get an RF 70-200 f/2.8 for 2399 out the door. Great deal, great lens, but heavier than the f/4 version. @@KenRockwellTV Yeah, I am sold on the 24-105 f/4. Still struggling with that 70-200 question. The weight comes down to feeling like lugging around a full soda can when using the 2.8. I found the R5 files to not play as nicely with lightroom in a specific use case of timelapses where noise shows up. While you can do noise reduction- the sheer file sizes make it hell when you have a 900-1300 raw file timelapse to batch process… My older canon R for some strange reason seems to cancel noise more consistently frame to frame in lightroom when you go to view the finoshed timelapse So then it’s do you buy the expensive topaz software for video that reduces noise or do you simply go for the larger pixels and more manageable file sizes of the r6ii? I am leaning on r6ii because everything I sell is limited to 4k 30-60fps

Ugh. I love my R7, but a few things the 6 mk 2 has, I would like in my overall kit. Especially low light superiority. And I’ve grown oddly comfortable on your recommendations over anyone else’s online as even though you make a living doing this, you come across repeatedly as a no BS reviewer. Your statement that the 6 mk 2 is your favourite camera on the market and being a lifelong photographer just makes it harder to ignore. Moreover, all the items I have purchased based on your recommendations have turned out to be excellent. Sometimes I wish you would stop recommending things! I’m a skeptic, so I’m normally not affected by influence. Maybe that’s why I’m freely admitting this. You could just say you love the R7 almost as much and save me a few grand (including a few accessories like the grip I’ve wanted but fits not on my R7). With the current discount i am tempted to upgrade, but wanted to verify if its possible to access images on the camera via usb connection using the Canon camera connect app. My workflow usually starts with reviewing images on camera and importing only what I rate. I am hoping with the upgrade i can use the phone app for rating images. Over a wireless connection its a slow experience amd hoping over usb it'll be much faster. I've had the R6II for about a year now, and my sole gripe with it isn't even necessarily its fault. It's still not supported by Lightroom for tethering. Adobe claims they rely on drivers from the manufacturer to add software support. This means that either Canon has been sitting on drivers (which should be nearly identical to the R6), or Adobe has the driver they need, and just haven't added the support yet. In either case, it should't have taken a year+ to add tethering support. For studio photographers, whether that be portraits, products, etc... this is a big feature to be missing. Any chance you can make some noise and get the ball rolling?

Hello Ken! What a beautiful and helpful content You create! I kindly appreciate what you're doing. I am an hobbyist photographer (do not make videos at all) from Estonia and having a Canon RP camera with only one kit lens 24-105 f/4-7.3, that I don't really like as I'm growing up in photography. I photograph mainly landscape and street. What could you suggest for me for a switch.. I have my eyes on Nikon Z7 II, but I really didn't tried this one out in practice. I really like R6II but I'm thinking about the glass and to me it seems that Canon does provide really expensive (for me) glass (RF 70-200 f/4, RF 14-35 f/4, etc..). Nikon btw has really decent 14-30mm f/4, 24-120 f/4 and 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 glass at affordable price point. I watch a lot of YT videos about Nikon and Canon cameras what talking about pros and cons of the cameras and I cannot really decide what camera to buy.. one talk about how great Nikon Z7II is and another one talk how bad it is.. and both of them talking about different aspects. I think that Nikon Z8 is great one but it has kinda bigger form factor and you mentioned some of the cons about ergonomics and I stucked at this point.. R5 is also great one (with 45mp) but as I'm an amateur mby it's too pro for me. What I want is to have one camera for 5-6 years what I can shoot with no problems and need for a switch.

Great review Mr. Rockwell. Your love for colour is very contagious, I used to read ALL of your how-to articles during my boring job hours (bought "how to make friends and influence people", best $14 I ever spent). Greetings from El Salvador.
