What I learned form watching this video is I need to find a new word to use other than...."fantastic". Also, we filmed this video at the end of last year prior to the R5C being announced. But even with that being announced, it wouldn't have fit into this particular video. Maybe a future one for R5 vs R5C, we will see.

Just got the R6. Budget was a big factor, especially after adding the storage options. The R6 allowed me to get a beter lens with the camera (RF 24-70 f2.8 IS USM). Still blown away by the possibilities. Tried an adapted EF 135 f/2 USM in the middle of the night at ISO 25600 and 1/15 of a second. Handheld. That gives a usable image. This should not be possible. Looking forward to landscape photography using moonlight.

@@acupunctuur_Vlaanderen If you can afford it, get the RF version. The adapter is not bad, but the adapted result gives a very front-heavy lens. And I find changing the lens with the adapter a little more of a hassle. On the other hand, if you can get a 'bargain' EF 24-70 II, then it is certainly an option. I can't afford to replace all glass at once, so the adapter is great to have.

I purchased an R6 and returned it for the R5. The R5 simply permitted deeper cropping (I know you don't really like cropping Jared). I enjoy shooting wildlife and the extra resolution does come in handy for bird photography. I agree that both are great cameras and both work better with EF lens than any of my old EF bodies.

Full time pro here - shoot weddings, portraits, headshots, sports, etc. I totally came to the same conclusion. I have an R5 and it rocks for what I do and I do love the liberty I have in cropping. When you are shooting on the go, the freedom to crop in is wonderful. Particularly in sports when you want to get real close to the action to show the intensity but the action is unpredictable so you really need to shoot wider than the point of action in order to capture when they do unexpected moves.

@@elipacker3932 On the photo side the biggest for me was stills rate and eye detect AF, on the video it was getting closer to a no-crop 4k. And love having the weather sealing for my personal shooting. I still use the RP with the 50 or 35 if I want to walk around with something small. I was shooting paid stuff on the side before getting it, and pulled the trigger as I tried a year of full time creative freelancing. Currently back to a job and side shooting. Imo, if you're "looking" for reasons, or wrestling to justify the cost, stay put and continue to mull it over. A big part of my decision was to make sure I had a backup for an increased number of shoots. If I never took a run at full time I probably would have gone with a lens and stayed with one body.

Upgraded from the 6D Mark II to the R6. It removes so many little headaches from shooting on a DSLR. Adapting EF glass is seamless, like he said. When I phase out the R6 to being my second body, I’ll likely go with the R5 as a main (portrait shooter). Although the new R5c is looking like an interesting option.

Hi Jared, I am not a professional photographer, just a regular dad. I own a RP and I am super happy with it. I understand that the RP might not be a real option for you guys but concerning taking pictures of my family it totally gets the job done, is significantly cheaper, compact, and has got 26MP. The missing/hidden silent mode, however, is indeed disappointing as e.g. the sound can distract kids from playing. I have gained some experience over the years, shoot raw and in manual mode nowadays, and own some RF L glass. I would thus be interested also in content for people like me who are neither professionals nor "JPG point and shoot". However, I enjoy your videos a lot, so thanks a lot for all the efford you put into all the testing / explaining / comparing (including Canon's RP)!

#gotthisfar After a lot of thought I went for the R5. As a nature photographer, the ability to crop into my shots made the decision easy. It's an amazing piece of kit. I was worried about battery life but on some shoots I have had well over 1000 shots on one battery. No complaints there! I have only one gripe which is that the electronic shutter only shoots in 20fps. The fact that it's silent is great for nature but 20fps can fill the card and PC too fast. A 5fps option would be nice and surely an easy thing for Canon to do in firmware. Mind you, 20FPS is amazing!

well, the 12fps ( at least on the R6) come with 'exclusions : battery more than 50% full, certain EF lenses only, shutter speed minimum 1/1000 etc etc. Still Canon did a fantastic job and the R6 for sports photography and general use. I sold my 6D MKII because the R6 can do what the 6D MKII did without the grip. Wireless ftp transfer on the R6 is available and is it more stable than the 1Dx MKII wireless transmitter! The high ISO and AF speed on the R6 are amazing!!! So unless one does landscapes and needs the very fine detail of a 45mpx sensor the R6 is the overall best value for money mirrorless Canon camera.

😄I got the R5 w/grip and 28-70mm f2.0 lens for shooting weddings-n-stuff. What I like the most of about the R5 is the 45 MP sensor is that I can crop to 18 MP and still have a great image. This is an advantage as I don't need to pull out a 70-200mm f2.8 lens as with cropping, it's like using that lens. When you are in a hurry, switching lenses takes time and risking missing a shot. I also have the advantage of no longer needing to have TWO cameras at my side. Though I do have a backup just in case my R5 dies for what ever reason. There was a time my R5 completely froze and I had to turn it off and pull out the battery. Basicly rebooted it, then it was fine. I have been thinking of buying an R6 as a backup or use it for video but my old DSLR still works fine as a backup and I get to use my old EF lenses with it. I have no interest for the R3. I wish it had at least a 45 MP sensor. I think I'll just wait for the R1 to come out and get that. I'm pretty sure it's going to be at least 45 MP or more. I would be happy if it did 80 or 90 MP. My mind would be blown away if it did 100 or 150 MP. That would compete with a Phase One camera which cost around $50,000. Resolution like that would be for doing a tall billboard on the side of a building. If the R1 had all the features of the R3 and had a 90 MP sensor, I would just say, "Take my money now!" 🤣

I watched a lot of comparison videos between the two,k and it came down to price in the end. I shoot weddings, I upgraded to R6 from 5D IV. R6 is better overall, and you pay less for more. The only thing i miss from the 5D IV is the resolution sometimes, but its not a deal breaker since i'm not cropping, but those compressed CR3 saves much more space in the hard drives. Even with an adapted 9 year old EF600mm f4 mk2 plus a 1.4x mk 3 tele the AF is superb and I'd venture to say slightly quicker than on my old 5D4. I have the RF800mm F11 as well and it's outrageously good for the price. As for rolling shutter, it's not something that has caused me a problem so far as I shoot at f5.6 for BIF and the background is blurred out anyhow. I've not had any occasion to switch to mech shutter so far. I've not seen anything at the R5's price point that comes close to its capabilities.

As you say it depends, I got the R5 to replace my 5D4 because it’s a good all rounder for a hybrid shooter like me who doesn’t do sport but most other genres. While I have the usual suspects in RF glass the adapter lets me use a 16 year collection of L series glass without need for re-investing. In the real world for my kind of shooting I’ve never seen an overheating problem or the corner IBIS jitters with video and very (14mm) wide angle lens some people report. Finally on the subject of moving from video on a DSLR to Mirrorless what a joy the EVF is outside, I was totally turned off to these when a friend showed me their Fuji perhaps 12 years ago, things have improved unbelievably.

I've had the R6 withe 24 - 105 F4L in December and it is literally my perfect camera, it has everything I've ever wanted in a camera. Its great for action, good for general photography and portraits. Super customizable, the back buttons are incredible and a lot easier to get to than the previous MFT cameras that I was using. (The R5 is just the portrait and general photography focused camera, it's good for action but will be a little slower if you don't have an XQD.)

I had the same "debate" considering the camera to buy (my 10 years old 7D AF was not "giving it" in tracking fast moving objects and it was time to upgrade to dual pixel AF anyway), the R5 has much more MP than the R6 and video is not my thing anyway... The advantage of the R3 (mainly the GPS) are not enough to make the difference. I have to say that in many of the parameters, these cameras are almost the same, so the main point that made my choice was the 45MP sensor. The only thing I wish the R5 to have is GPS (the GPS on the app is not as consistent as I wanted it to be).

Sigh, much appreciated analysis... I can get an R6+kit lens tomorrow for 2600€+150 cashback (normally 3100). They were kind to hold on to my late Black Friday order. I've been eying this camera since it came out, but waited due to overheating and Covid meaning less work. R was lacking, and I was ready for R6 to be the perfect camera to replace my (sigh 2) 700D. But now I fear I'll regret not going for a Sony A7IV. Its much better MP count, no overheating, and no FORCED recording limit, boy that stings. It feels off going for the company that always seems to amaze with the little dents its cripple hammer makes on its products. I never shoot sports so I don't care about the higher fps, neither do I have worthy canon glass to latch onto. Getting Canon for its ergonomics, price and because I'm used to it, feels like "I'll get this now and start collecting glass, and the NEXT Canon I get in two years will be perfect!"... when I can get the kinda perfect A7 now, and never feel like I'm missing on MP, or need a monitor recorder. And I doubt Canon's ever getting rid of that recording limit. Unless 2022's aps-c R7 does so much better with heat, that they go and buff R6 so it remains a good option at its price? Sorry I'm dropping this here, y'all. It's just my head's explodey and I thought venting here a bit.

I've compared raws of all cams, taken with the exact same lenses at the same time, uprezed to 45 MP and couldn't identify which was the R6, R3 or R5 files in a double blind test. I was a MP person for 15 years but now see that it really makes no difference if the quality of the sensor is good. The R6 seems to have an amazing sensor and the lens will ultimately make more difference than MP count. (In fact using enhance in camera raw, the R6 files at 45 MP looked better than the R5 out of camera, using the RF85, one of the sharpest lenses you can buy).

Because I have the 1DX I went right to the R3 because I shoot mostly sports. Pro Motocross to be exact. After researching the differences between the R3 and R5, i'm leaning hard into the R5. If money is not an issue then you'll probably opt for an R3 or maybe the R5 but with most, money is a major factor and so the R6 remains a great option with its super autofocus, image quality and overall capability.

I have had the R6 for a little over a year and by far, it is best camera I have ever owned. I decided on the R6 because of the price (I am an amateur, mostly wildlife, landscape and family photos) and do not regret my purchase at all. Having said that, I have also had several opportunities to shoot with the R5 and I shot with both cameras at an airshow last October and I noticed a difference. While the autofocus system on both cameras is excellent, it seemed that the R5 stayed with the fast moving planes a bit better and the ability to crop in was a distinct advantage. I would like to get an R5 but even used they go for over $3,000 and you need Cfast cards which are not cheap, so the idea of committing to $4000 plus additional costs for additional Cfast cards or well over that for new, is a budget buster for me. For now, I will continue to rent the R5 on occasion when I know I want the extra megapixels or need a bit better focusing.

Great video as always Jared. I take photographs as a hobby and already own an R6 and was contemplating upgrading to an R5. Jared gave me a good piece of advice and mentioned to consider spending the $1400 difference on good glass. While not mentioned here, I think that is something to consider for someone looking at upgrading. Nice comparison. I totally agree with the R5 decision. As a former APS-C user with a canon M5, the R5 was the only viable option so far. I love using tele and also I have some EF-S lenses that automatically switch down to 1.6 Crop Mode, both resulting in less resolution for the area I want on the picture. So in both setups, the resolution I get compared with my previous camera would be 7.8MP for the R6, 10MP for the R3 and 17MP for the R5. The M5 makes the same image with 24MP. The drop to 17MP is ok, considering the rest of the camera is more powerful. But the drop for the R6 & R3 is a clear deal-breaker. #gotthisfar

This was a fantastic video Fro! I had my camera bag with gear in it stolen right from me during a shoot. Had a Tile tracker on it and could see where it was on a map. Sent an officer to the address and they would not let the officer in the house so the officer asked if I wanted him to get a search warrant and get in there. I told the officer that because of the area it was in I did not want him to risk anything even if it was his job just for my gear and thought that because I had been paying for insurance through PPA for 10+ years that it would be covered. PPA denied my claim due to it being under the same clause that if it were to have been stolen from an unlocked vehicle they would not cover it. But I am digress here, basically I have to replace everything so I have been going back and forth between these three trying to decide. I am a freelancer for Canon and they have been so awesome with letting me borrow gear to keep my business going but returning everything here this month. But I love 2xSD V90 less expensive and I don’t need to purchase an extra cost for CF cards but for an extra reader cards as well. Don't forget that the larger files and faster frame rates of the R5 and R3 create additional demands on the speed and storage capacity of the computer that one uses for post-production. When considering cost, it is also important to think about which lenses you might already have, which lenses you might want to have, and whether you might need a second or backup camera body. Could I do more with an R3 with a 24-70, or an R6 with a 24-70 and a 70-200? How about the choice of a R3 plus the Hebrew Trinity of lenses, or 2 gripped R6s with the same lenses, and 2 of them mounted and ready for use at a moment's notice? Or maybe the extra resolution of the R5 might be versatile and useful enough to allow me to get away with a 400mm lens rather than needing to buy or rent a 600mm lens. What will work best will depend on the use case and budget. Always.

I purchased a 6D2 in late 2018 which for me was not a long time ago because I have not had much time to shoot with it because my kids were born roughly about the same time as I got the camera. But I still had a list of lenses I wanted to get for it. This included the EF50mm 1.2 and a Sigma 14-24mm lens for a wide angle for FF. My issue would be if I even thought about going into a R camera (which would be the R6 most likely), I would then instead just buy the lenses for that system. I hate the idea that the EF system is dead already.

I really wish that Canon would have gone with a 30ish mp sensor on the 6 and then dumbed down the video if that could have kept the price the same. @@romainprovost7164 you're confusing eye control AF with eye detection AF, which is completely different. I assumed the O.P. was referring to the former, which may have been my mistake. The R3 has infrared sensors within the EVF that track your eye movements. That's how it knows where you're looking, so it can move the AF point appropriately. You have to calibrate those sensors to track your individual eye. The R5's EVF has no such tracking sensors. Thus it cannot have eye-control AF. All of the cameras are good but it is the lenses that keeps me with canon. RF-28-70 f2.0 is truly a great lens. It has character like some of the pricey glass from brand L.

Depending on how you set your R5 or R6, you can actually take the ISO as low as 50. I shoot with the R6 in manual mode and I can set my ISO as low as ISO50. It'll show on the screen as "L".

I traded the R for an R6. R6 's autofocus is great. With that said I always think about trading my Mark IV for a R5. Hearing about the R5 file size does make me pause plus the price does not help either. I have alot of EF L glass too so while I know the 5 and 6 are upgrades I would lose alot of the upgrade to RF L glass. The RF L glass is very good. I have a 24-105 L and it is imho response and speed wise focuses faster and slightly better than EF with the adapter than

I went with the R6 a few months ago… before seeing this video… I am very happy with the 6…:I am thinking about adding another camera to my stable… I was thinking about the R3… but… after seeing this, I am seriously thinking about the 5. Thank you!

#gotthisfar :-) I went with the R6. It does everything we need extremely well. It replaces the 5D4 which is still in use as a backup camera and really large groupshots (for the slight plus in detail because it has more mp's).

The way the R6 moves from video to photo is the only thing that stopped me buying the R6.

@@shoodie72 the R6 doesn't save custom video settings. So operationally it can be a bit slower for quick moving hybrid work.

Awesome video Jared, thank you for putting it together. I have an R6 and I'm quite happy with it coming from a 5D MkIII and APS-C before that

If I still had my 7Dii as my primary camera body I would of jumped to the R6 for price or R5 for the sensor. I have the 5Div and hesitate to change to the R6 because the sensor and R5 because the price. I am sort of stuck, performance-wise they are all beasts for sports (off road motorcycle racing for me) but I find it hard to give up the camera/sensor that I currently have. I'll be sitting pretty with my 5Div a little bit longer... and that isn't a terrible situation to be in.

This was a great comparison. After watching this I know can say unequivocally that I still don't know which one I want to upgrade to! (Not the fault of this review). By the way, I know this is a nit, but at around 19:57-ish in the video, your graphic indicates that the R3 has a "Full HDMI Port" but earlier you stated that it has a Micro HDMI Port. I know it's just a typo but thought I'd mention it.
