This is the Real World Review of the Canon EOS R5. Is this a complete FAIL of a Camera or is it one of the best cameras ever made? Will I be switching from Sony to the R5? Is the OVERHEATING really an issue? Let's find out.....This video was shot entirely on the Canon EOS R5 and RF Lenses.

The Canon EOS R5 is what I would call a MASTERFUL Camera. Is it perfect...no, but it's certainly close. This is a powerful, well rounded camera, from it's 12 frames per second at 45 megapixels, to INSANE almost Sony like lock on tracking and finally it's video capabilities. This is one of the most well rounded cameras i've ever used. Canon deserves major props for being able to produce such a camera. Not to mention how amazing the RF Lenses are. Where Canon dropped the ball on this one, marketing. It should never have been marketed as a 8k video first camera. It should have been an amazing stills camera that offers solid solid video for those who need it...with some limits.
At the end of the day, I am not switching for stills but there's a good possibility that we will be replacing all our Nikon Z6's which we've been using for video with R5's and RF glass.

I'm not sure everyone fully appreciates all the intricacies that are involved in putting together a video like this from the scripting to the traveling, to the gear set up in the field or in studio, to the testing, to the editing to even the little things like getting your plugs right (like the Allen's camera page for pricing) for sponsors. You put together the absolute best real-world reviews of camera gear on the net. There's no shilly hype happening. Sure, there's lots of folks that put out their "reviews" on new gear when the embargo is lifted, but you don't hear much else down the road---especially if it's not the system those photographers use. What impresses me is the extensive work you do putting together multiple videos together on a camera even when it's not in your primary system. Anyway, good job. I'll have my R5 in hand soon and will make sure to use your links. Thanks for the hard work.

When i first started watching his videos i thought he was just a guy on KZbin yelling and doing click-baits for views. But as time went on i understood that he was just brutally honest at all times and he was among the few reviewers who actually put in time and effort and went out and shot good pictures showing the capabilities of the gear he has. There are many with same or more equipment but rarely takes good pics and just do totally pointless lab tests and dramatise everything. Jared does useful real world reviews. Lots of love from India Jared. Keep up the good work ❤️.

Thank you for this incredible review, as always 😊. About the overheating, it is possible to record unlimited 4K HQ externally with the screen off and no memory card (and you guys do have an atomos...). Also, you don't emphasize that the 4K non HQ is unlimited internally (even though the quality is lower), but more importantly that the 4K non HQ crop is also unlimited internally (downsampled from 5.1K so very good quality, as 4K HQ). So, as viable options to overheating there is: - unlimited external 4K HQ (no card & screen off) - unlimited internal 4K crop (downsample from 5.1K) - unlimited internal 4K non HQ (but lower quality)

40:00 - I spoke with a canon rep and asked him about a possibility for 4K RAW in the future. He said it isn't really possible because the RAW video is just straight up the uncompressed data from the sensor which is 45 megapixels/8K native. They would have to do some extra processing/line skipping to do 4K RAW which apparently isn't possible right now. This is also why you can't film 8K RAW if you have electronic stabilization turned on, because if it crops for stabilization it can't use the full sensor readout.
@RiceCubeTech

I don’t understand how they can’t just crop the sensor. Bruh, so many cameras can shoot raw at different resolutions. Bmpcc6k can do 4K raw. That’s a bad excuse in canons part.

Great video Jared! Fun fact about the recording limit (usually 29:59) that most manufacturers use on DSLR style cameras; going above that limit classifies that camera as a video camera/camcorder under import law in the US. Stupid but thats the explanation that I was given. Hope this helps anyone that questions this limit.

Apparently the overheating is a design cockup. If they had done the heat dispersion as it should have been done, there would have been no overheating. And not using the thermometer and use a timer instead was also a major howler. As it is, somebody modded the heat dispersion bits and he now has a R5 that will not overheat. Canon should fix this ASAP.

Can anyone help me on this issue I'm having with R5 (and it's likely me and not the camera). I'm using the 24-70 f2.8 lens with R5. Everything works great, but in low light inside I noticed the following. I'm in a gray colored office with one ceiling light. Just testing the camera and learning the controls. With indoor light at night when I look into the viewfinder with the exposure set to "0" on the sliding scale (in Auto or Manual mode), I see a much brighter room than what I see with my own eyes looking around. It's as if the camera had a light shining on the room. I brought down the viewfinder brightness some, but that's not the only issue. Same issues on my digital flip screen. When I take a photo it's very bright relative to the actual room. And it takes pictures that are brighter than what I see with no flash. If I'm setting the f stop and shutter speed such that the exposure meter shows "0", why is the photo not represent what I see in the room? It looks great, don't get me wrong, but it's not what the room looks like. If I'm in manual mode, I need to change the f stop or shutter speed to reduce the exposure to almost -2 on the scale to get the image I'm seeing with my own eyes. The photo then looks almost exactly like the room. I read there is something about the exposure meter using a part of the gray color spectrum to determine exposure and it will be bright sometimes. But I have this issue pretty much in all indoor, low light conditions. I would have thought what I see through the viewfinder is the same as the room so I can make decisions on how to capture light. As a beginner do I have to look around my environment and adjust exposure above or below "0" to capture what I see if that's what I'm looking to accomplish? BTW it's not the exposure simulation setting. I have that feature enabled. When I turn it off, the viewfinder screen just doesn't go darker or lighter as you adjust the exposure. It just stays bright (and brighter than the room). When I enable it, then as you adjust the exposure, the screen darkens/lightens. The problem is still that the view finder is too bright at "0" in a dark room and it takes a picture that is much brighter than what I see. For example, I just tried again with only my computer screen on in the room (which is very bright and had an all white screen). The room is pretty dark but the camera through the viewfinder is as if there is a bright light on in the room. I took a picture at 400 ISO, 2 sec shutter speed and 2.8 f stop (all of which gave me "0" on the exposure meter scale). The viewfinder shows a bright room as if there are a lot of lights on. It doesn't even come close to the dark room I see with my own eyes. In other words, using automatic or manual and using the exposure scale as a guide, if I set the exposure such that the scale is at "0" it takes a photo that is much brighter than what I see. I guess I'm wrong to assume that at "0" the exposure scale would represent what I see. Let's say I want a picture of my low light room they way I see it through my own eyes. I now have to reduce the exposure to -2 or more to get it to look like the room. This is what confuses me. It's as if the camera knows it's going to be too dark and ups lighting to be brighter than what I see, and then I need to take the exposure down. I'm trying to figure out how exposure works relative to what my eyes see without the camera. On the back screen the photo I took is brighter than the room. So the camera is doing something to make the photo brighter at "0" on the scale. So I'm trying to figure out if this is normal and I just need to adjust the exposure myself to compensate for the relative difference between the camera and my eyes in low light.

I watched the whole video - it is long but it's good, very good! The stills you took and the editing/grading you did are just PERFECT! Awesome photography! And the Video-Bits with the shallow DOF... soooo beautiful! You know your job! I'm a pro Photographer since 1989 and I just switched from Nikon (32 Years - starting with the mighty F4S to the D850 and the D5 at the end) to Canon RF meaning two Bodies of the R5 and pretty much all the RF lenses. Therefore I could/can perfectly relate to your videos (Nikon RAW guy slowly drifting away from Nikon...). To me the deal breaker was the shifting of my job in general. Was it only BTS and Making of's that my clients were asking for until a year or two ago as to video/moving picture... they now request video quite regularly from me (even though I'm known as a photographer and not as a cinematographer). I shot two corporate videos (both around 60-90 sec) reportage for construction workers with my Nikons and I swore to myself to never ever shoot video again with Nikon. First I thought of only puchasing one R5 and two lenses for video and for my main photography I would stick to my beloved Nikon D5... but very soon I realized what great awesome cameras those r5's are and what nice lenses AF-systems, IBIS et cetera... Therefore I switched my whole system. I'm working for two month with the Canon system now and I'm absolutely happy and I don't miss a thing comparing to my Nikons (which I was expecting). I had the exact same problem with the uncomplete tilting of the display and the straight angles! I'm currently filming a documentary about my mother who turns 80 this year. A lot of talking head situations plus on location shots in the fields... I film everything in 4K HQ (except very few shots B-Roll on 120fps 4K). One cam records on a Atomos Ninja 5 the other one directly to the CF-Express Card internal. Overheating is a bit of an issue. I could work around it until now - thanks to two cameras and one on an external recording drive (Ninja). But to feel even more free in the near future I preordered the coming C70 as well. I guess for those nice shallow DOF shots I will use my R5's and for 120fps/4K and for long seqences the C70. Sorry for the lengthy comment - but the video was long too ;-)

@Jared... you claim there is no noise reduction applied at 50:45 but I'm positive that isn't true. All cameras, also Sony, will show chroma-noise at ISO 16000. I can tell by the amount of Luma-Noise that the chroma noise MUST be there. If you use Lightroom or Photoshop for instance, they do apply standard denoising for chroma-noise by default. You manually have to move those sliders to zero! That being said... I think this is my next camera.... thanks for a great review, as always! Keep up the good work!

57:54 - Can't customize the *Q menu* is something that bugs me too. I loved the ability to do this on the Canon 5D Mk4. 58:22 - Inability to save/transfer camera settings has been on my Canon wish list for years. It's even more necessary now with the customizability of the new R-series cameras. The 1D series bodies can do this, so please bring it to the R-series bodies. 1:10:50 - Manny Ortiz I've had the *temperature warning* icon pop up on me during at least 4 weddings on both EOS R5 bodies. Tried the firmware update on one body and it made a difference, but when shooting tethered (wired, because there were WiFi issues where I was shooting) I had the *temperature warning* icon show up after only 30 minutes. As a still shooter who is doing more and more video jobs as well, I don't have any regrets with the Canon EOS R5 bodies. I don't like the 29-minute record limit because a couple times a year I'll record something long enough to hit that limit and it's frustrating.

WOW! What an Intro! I haven't ever seen that from the Fro Knows Photo channel before now! OK! This puts the lie to the "fact" that Canon can't make GOOD video cameras! Hot Damn! That intro wasn't just good --- IT WAS STUPENDOUS! --- IT WAS INSANELY GREAT !!! Now all that Canon has to do is put the R5 guts in a 1Dx3 body with a weather-sealed and SUPER-QUIET outer-body Heat Sink/Heat Radiator system with DCI 8K resolution at 60 fps and 16-bits per RGB colour channel (48-bit Colour RAW and Compressed) and the World Becomes Your Video and Stills Oyster! Ya Done Good Fro! That was ONE HECK OF A GREAT INTRO !!!! V

Rokinon/Samyang has two excellent AF lenses out at the moment for the RF mount, an 85 f1.4, and a 14mm f2.8. Both are around 700-800$, both are great quality, and both are weather sealed. I own the 85mm and was blown away by the performance for the price, and the 14mm seems to be amazing too. It's only a matter of time before sigma, Tamron, and others develop native lenses as the new pro bodies are out and people are beginning to switch. Hope this helps out anyone wondering about 3rd party lenses.

Thank you!! I’ve been waiting for this for months and you did not disappoint! ☺️ As a pro photographer for the past 15 years I was looking for a real world review from another pro photographer and I’ve been a big fan of your work and your videos are super entertaining! I got so sick and tired of the hyperbolic, video based nonsense from every other channel out there. Vlogging idiots with no actual talent or real world experience like camera conspiracies and Gerald Undone were spewing crap just to get views and fit the popular narrative of the day and MAN it got old fast! The R5 puts Canon back on top again (not that it really matters) and I can now upgrade my 5Div and R. I’ve always stuck with Canon since day one and I laugh at brand jumpers because I’ve never, ever seen anybody take better photos by switching brands, ever. But they are a lot poorer afterwards. People who jump brands generally do so because they are too lazy to improve their skills and spending money on gear is easier - it’s a shortcut. That’s why people would rather take a pill or get surgery rather than exercise or eat properly. As for the rare overheating (which is pretty much non-existent in Canada) that’s not really something you can compare with Nikon or Sony (which overheat too) because none of those brands have 8k, or 4K HQ super sampled from 8k and the R5 is the first mirrorless to have 4K 120. So in regular 4K modes that its competitors have, the R5 never overheats PLUS it shoots 10 bit internal and the Nikon and Sonys don’t have this. And the a7Siii isn’t worth mentioning because of its 12 MP cripple. Great job! And I agree: I’m not a fan of the flip screens either because they make it really difficult to get horizontal lines because they are off axis. I’d much prefer the pop out screens. I’m currently stuck in a hotel bored and this nearly 90 minute review was entertaining and super enjoyable!

I think the camera makers have largely abandoned the casual photographer. They can continue to sell old bodies and glass, but all the innovation and new products are for professionals and wealthy enthusiasts. Advances in computational photography thanks to the inflated R&D budgets Apple, Google, et al have made dedicated cameras all but useless for the average consumer.

The R5 is a camera for pros. Those lenses are for pros. Canon and other manufacturers have affordable glass than can be adapted to the RF mount for hobbyists. For example, 20-35 f3.5-4.5, the 17-40 f4L, the 16-35 f2.8L II, The 24mm f2.8 IS USM, RF 35mm f1.8, EF 50mm 1.8 STM, Tamron 60mm f2 macro, Canon 85mm f1.8, Canon 100mm f2, Sigma 105mm f2.8 OS HSM Macro, Canon 135mm f2L and the list goes on. I have an RP with the 16-35mm f2.8L that I got for about $600, the 24-85mm f3.5-4.5 that I got for $80, the 50mm f1.8 STM (that I plan to upgrade to the Tamron 45mm f1.8 VC USD) and the Sigma 105mm f2.8 OS HSM MACRO that is my sharpest lens and an amazing piece of glass for about $400. If you want affordable you have to look into EF lenses and adapt them. They work wondefully. Even better than on EF cameras.

So while having the newest camera is nice, if you go pick up a 5d3 for 1000$ you can kill it! But company's are obviously going to price their new gear at a high price point. It's like the PS5. I rented an r6 and was surprised by the shutter sound as well as how fasts the controls change. when I switched to Sony I noticed immediately that there was a lag when switching Iso, shutter speed and aperture fast. But I think the shutter sound when a lens is attached also tells a story of how sealed it is (which contributes to heat retention) because if you compare the sound when a lens is attached and not attached there’s a big difference. Thanks for the review I was extremely pleased with canons new generation mirrorless

Great docu-review! To be fair the criticisms of the R5 are warranted but not regarding the 8k. It's really the 4k 60fps in high quality mode that is the bummer. If I waited for every "Innovation" that ALL the manufacturers tout, I'd NEVER press a shutter button. I started with NIKON back when the F was THE camera. Bought an FM for a girlfriend who took the camera and never saw me again (different story)... Then I switched to SONY... spent a couple of years with their DSLR's and Some years later, made the jump to Canon.. Fell hjard in love with Canon! Great images, high technology (for its time) and images I was proud of...Stayed with CANON until after buying a Brand New 1DX and a few months later the Canon Rep told me that I should trade UP to a MKII... Are you kidding me? $8000 for a camera that is "Upgraded" six months later? So THIS year I went back to Sony Got my feet wet with a 6000, Liked it so much I bought an A6400...LOVED it! Thinking about a Full Frame to round out the kit. The R5? Great Camera, Great Images and not too bad if you don't mind shooting with oven mitts.. (Yes, the one I tried had a SERIOUS overheating problem..) I guess they finally minimized that, but really, there's no way I'm selling all my stuff to get the "Next Great Thing"...
