I'm a long-time film SLR user (1968-2003) with a Canon FT-QL. My main walk-around lens was the FL 85mm f/1.8. Switched to the Digital Rebels (XT to XTi to T4i), then to the 70D and then 80D. Over time, my cameras got progressively bigger and heavier until I got the R7 this summer - it's actually smaller and lighter than the FT-QL, and the kit lens is about the same size as the FL 85mm. With the RF nifty-fifty - basically the same angle of view on Canon APS-C as the 85mm on the FT - it's even smaller than that rig. I love the fast "eye auto focus," and I've have discovered that I can map the controls to feel like my FT-QL: I've set the control ring on my lenses to control the f/stop, the main dial on the top deck for shutter speed, and the ring around the joystick for ISO. The histogram in the viewfinder is a more informative version of the exposure needle in the FT (I run in Manual exposure mode), and the Exposure Simulation/Depth of Field simulation in the viewfinder saves having to press the DOF button. I've even been able to start taking pictures of birds in flight (seagulls), with the RF 100-400 lens, something I've never even attempted before.

I love my Nikon Zfc but the R10 is making me pick it up every day. R7 is better and I do not mind one sd card in the R10. The R7 and R10 show when it is overheating which I believe helps the users tremendously. The other cameras when video recording will shut off and stop the recording without warning. Hi Christopher , thanks for the review , its refreshingly positive as on youtube at the moment so many reviewers seem to be all for burning Canon at the stake for their stand on third party glass. What ever Canons reasons be it perceived greed (their own relatively expensive RF glass) or a resistance to IP theft we’ll never know but their bottom line will tell the story one way or the other, for me I can get done what needs doing happily with RF and EF glass. However I sympathise with people finding their third party lens suddenly not working properly, something morally not right there on Canons part . I got the R7 as an affordable back-up body in case my R5 goes tits-up in the middle of an event very happy with it.

They were my favorite combination during my old 7Dii days prior to 2018 save for AF issues (primarily due to the DSLR method of AF, at least on my copies. This should theoretically be a non issue on Mirrorless.) To this day I'm still very impressed by the images those lenses got me. Absolutely worth the compromise on weight and with IBIS in the R7, they'd be great. You'll get wonderful used copies too now at decent prices. But do check Chris's reviews on those two lenses first. The 18-35 is an easier lens to recommend than the 50-100.

Well I said I would never buy another crop sensor camera but coming from the 6D Mk II (which I will keep for low light, indoor wide angle pics), the appeal of IBIS for stills and being able to convert the long end of my 100-400 4.5-5.6 L to a 640 mm proved too strong to resist. So now I have an R7 and EF to RF mount adapter incoming. I don't really care about the video 4k, recording limits, etc etc. To me, mirrorless/SLR's are primarily for stills and trying to hybridize them to do video is a sketchy endeavor that never seems to hit the mark as well as dedicated video machines are capable of.

I find the kit lens (my copy at least) has a tremendous amount of chromatic aberration and is not very sharp in the corners. Can you recommend a lens that would be better suited for landscape photography (adapted or not) but wouldn't brake the bank (lens expensive than the rf 15-35 f/2.8 or the rf 14-35mm f4)? isn't the 18-150 mm is very soft? The version for EOS-M is very very soft. I get the same amount of detail out of my very old Olympus XZ-1 (10 MP sensor) at 4x zoom as with Canon M50 mark II with this lens at 150 mm (~9x zoom). The later has a 24 MP sensor so it should be miles ahead of the old Olympus pocket camera, but in reality the softness of the lens make the camera and the zoom capability useless. After 12 years of waiting I've finally upgraded my Canon body. Back in 2011 I bought an entry level Rebel and for the last decade I've been keeping tabs on the performance of the 7D and 7DMkII, and the 80D and 90D, which after getting a Fuji on discount the Canon equivalents never satisfied my desires for an upgrade, until now. While I am deeply disappointed with the lack of a BSI sensor, the R7 is otherwise a perfect storm of features. I now require HDR-PQ support for best viewing on OLED displays, I require high pixel density for macro and wildlife, and it needs a big battery, and the flip screen, and while IBIS is not a requirement of my shooting style I'm sure I will find it very useful. Sony and Nikon crop bodies fail on several counts, Fuji was so close and in fact I'd prefer the X-H2 if only they had HDR-PQ support, alas they don't and I now have an R7 in the mail. As long as Canon keeps the price the same and upgrades to a 40MP Stacked Sensor then I'll happily upgrade to the R7 MkII when it inevitably comes in 3-4 years.

Plus it’s a tremendous value for money proposition. I was expecting the cripple hammer to strike but to be honest that’s not the case. Definitely more “wow!” than “why?”

Diffraction is becoming a big issue nowadays. I wich Canon would use smaller mega pixel sensors so diffraction would be better.

Way to go Chris, you once again did your thing and gave one hell of a review! Question, did you say that it has a 30m time limit on recording? Maybe I miss heard or misunderstood something, but I didn't think the R7 had a record limit. EDIT - oops, I didn't see your pinned comment. But please feel free to reply if you'd like to chat mon ami! Cheers to you!

Congrats for the review. Now we will wait the special video about quality with more EF lenses. The actual ones for RF mount are only Canon lenses (not third party vendors are "invited to this party") and not everyone has the money for the L types fast lenses. The STM versions are to ~f6-7. Here one EF f4 fixed would be consider a "fast" one (plus better bokeh). Or the EF-S 17-55 f2.8 or any other 2.8 adapted I am thinking if would be a good option vs the RF f2 (expensive) versions.
@mvp_kryptonite2 жыл бұрын
When adapting the EF-S 17-55 it’s great, but I would hope Canon refresh this and the EF-S 10-22 and add the usual control ring, wider angle, lighter and better IS. They could do the EF-S 18-135/200, 55-250 & the wonderful 15-85 as I bet people find them useful as well
@groundhoppingwlkp3622 Жыл бұрын
Most old lenses from EF system on R7 are just rubbish. 32,5 APSC matrix is so demanding that they just too weak for it. I had 17-55 2.8 on C7d2 and even there it wasn't perfect (huge flaring, CA on 2.8, not so sharp on 55mm) so I would even not try it on R7 for so dense sensor
@isaiasmartinez7969 Жыл бұрын
@@mvp_kryptonite the only thing I do not like is now Canon is releasing lenses with a F-Stop 6.5 or higher. Sometimes I am wondering if better having an ef 100-400 up to 5.6 instead the rf 100-500 (with the plus is cheaper), even the Sigma sound better 🤐 but I am worried with the compatibility and focusing response.
@mvp_kryptonite Жыл бұрын
@@groundhoppingwlkp3622 yes the RF-S need to deliver much better light control and sharpness to I imagine around 50-60mpx to take us through a decade or so (not saying that that mega pixel is the limit or a decade but just for the conversation)
@mvp_kryptonite Жыл бұрын
@@isaiasmartinez7969 I picked up the kit 18-150 (or whatever it is I hardly use it) and the 600/11 and what they do have in spades is lightweight and compactness (plus the mirrorless bodies are much smaller). In theory ISO performance should balance it out but I know exactly what you mean, looks like we are being short changed
@adamtuhacek15062 жыл бұрын
Would the images still be sharpest around 5.6 on a lens with a slower aperture? I plan on using the 100-500 and it would be nice to be able to use it wide open most of the time.

Great review thank you. Do you think this camera would be ok as a back up camera to my R5 with weddings ? Then i can use the R7 for great wildlife camera as well.

Re the battery, I bought a Duracell one as a back up, and that is far better than the standard Canon one I got.

Hi Chris, Will you be testing the new Fujifilm X-H2 with its 40mp apsc sensor? I'd like to see how new and old Fuji lenses cope with the high resolution sensor.

Have no fear Mr. Frost, and anyone else whom may be concerned on the build quality. Canon is known for their prowess and expertise in the use of plastic stuff. Remember the older Elan and similar 35 MM film cameras, with the battery door and its plastic hinge/!? Cheeeaaaaap! Key to Canon’s remaining Solvent. yep, used to be like the poster child for Canon. Not so much anymore. Gonna go grab my Fuji, Olympus, or maybe my Nikon, and go out shooting. * Looks at the 5D4 sitting on the tripod, w/ 70-200 lens *. Great review, nonetheless. It is a shame that the R10 is another victim of its parent’s ‘crippling,’ as I don’t think the inclusion of a few better features, would have harmed the R7 sales. Oh well, the saga goes on and on…. Best! Cheers

Hei Chris, how do you rate medium-to-high iso (1600-3200-6400) of 30mpx R7 sensor compared to the 32,5mpx M6II sensor?

I'm worried about the physical make-up of the RF-S lenses as they're all polycarbonate aka plastic - even the lens mount itself is plastic. What about durability versus a metal flange on the lens mount? All my EF lenses have a metal mounting. I know the body flange on the R7 is metal and would like to have metal to metal and not metal to plastic.

Thanks for your details review! In my opinion, the power switch and handling of new wheel + joystick design, Canon user have to get used to it. This kind of new design changes is non-sense, reminds me EOS R which remove joystick and change as a "touch design" bar near the thumb area when you holding your camera. Personally I will wait for R7 mark II and see if I really jump to affordable RF system.😅

I really like your reviews and the precision and sensibility in your opinions on cameras and lenses. I would though encourage you to change the background music to some thing less percussive. I noticed you have changed to another composition, but the piano really makes it difficult to perceive what you are saying. Not that I cannot understand it, but it disturbs the mind, I think. What about something more floating jazz? A ballad or something like that? Regards from Svend
