I would use large setting with either of the two compressions that go with it. Memory cards are getting cheaper and you can afford to go to large and still have memory. When on the job I preview and delete the ones that are not good saving more space.

Question: I purchased the T3i yesterday 5/8/12 and was glad to find your tutorial. One of the first things I noticed though, after setting time and date, was when I hit the menu button there are fewer options than your camera shows. Yours appears to have 9 or 10 options across the top where mine has 6. 2 red camera icons, 2 blue, and 2 gold wrench icons. Can you tell me why this is? Thanks! Judy

I have this camera and I notice a lot of you are saying you don't have the flip out or articulated screen. Or the menu only has 6 options, not 9. Well, first, make sure you have a t3i...not a t3. The t3i has the articulated screen. Also, when you are in different modes, you will get more menu options. One thing also, I have read a lot of people complaining that the shutter gets stuck. Sometimes, it's the sensor, not the shutter. Mine is doing it now. Seems to be common. I bought the Canon Rebel T3i for Dummies and it saved me. 19.00 on Amazon. And yrs, he's using the prime 50 mm. F1.8 most likely. Fantastic cheap lens. Have fun! Remember. .T3i!

Some places sell lenes with the camera and some just the body and you get your own lens. The lenses that come with the camera are usually, as a rule of thumb, not as high end as lenses you would buy seperately.

Just a few more details, first there is the sound of shutter (as if closing), then you no longer see anything in view finder, the screen goes off (just black), no other button responds except shutter button or switching off the camera. If you press shutter button picture is taken (looks like on 2nd press) I hope that helps, thank you very much for your time, much appreciated.

Hi Jonvideo, Please bear with me, this is probably the most stupid question you 've ever got. I have a rebel t3i and i always take my pictures in live view mode and have always thought thats just an option (live view mode). I have been trying to take a picture using the view finder but with screen showing the settings, and the camera just closes the shutter and nothing else happens until I press the shutter button again, then a picture is taken. Is this normal? What am I doing wrong?

Well the view finder is closed as I cannot see anything, and the screen is also just black with nothing being displayed. When that happens the camera does'nt respond to any other button except to press the shutter button again even if you wait for a few minutes.

Just a little feedback. When people know something really well, they tend to forget what it is like to be a beginner. I was trying to learn to remember so it would havbe been helpful if you could have given a one or two beat pause so I could mentally record what you just said. When you move on to the next thing give a bullet point summary of the function you just reviewed. Also, move your hands slower.

The T3i is no longer the latest. There is a Canon T4i, now. There is not much of an improvement and the cost is about $150 higher.

bought it for $50 with 2 lenses standard and tamron 17-50/2.8 also 2 batteries and flash cable . very good camera but after 3-4 month die /o any reason. just no power. google say very common microswithes problem but i'm not tech guy. all palace when i found in NYC include Canon ask me for $249+tax!!!!! . that IMHO much more that just new body cost/ so i decide do not repair unless i do not find someone normal. but it just show that you need no pay more for used camera on market. as i understood all canons except 1d.5d and7d have same problem.i believe that it intentionally made by canon. so did i will buy new even for sal;e price (2 zoom bag kit $400)-definitely no. do i pay more than $50 for kit from 10mp and higher? sure not. but if i find again for normal price why not.
