In Mode 2, it never focused on the tree/lights behind you, so it wasn’t finding you - it just stayed focused on you. In Mode 1, you could see some pulsing in the background, but the focus changed quicker for sure.

I've been shooting on this camera, just updated it. Mode 2 (old AF) is almost like using a manual focus. it won't switch to other subjects at all. pretty much just lock it off and keep that distance. Mode 1 (new AF) is actually trying to find subjects. It's definitely improved to a usable state. I can select different focus points while recording and it will get them. Not as fast or accurate as phase detect. Better lighting definitely helps the contrast detect. I'm happier that they actually did something to improve it. fast lens, mic input, flippy screen and great colors. I really like the image on this camera. It's good enough for what i need it for.

We’ve used the original G7X for years and loved it (other than lens noise). We switched to the new RX100 after seeing your original comparison to the G7X III. While the Sony is very capable we miss the low light performance and pop of the picture on the G7X. We’ve had our fingers crossed that the G7X update would be a good one. Based on what I’ve seen in this video I just ordered a new G7X III and will be returning the Sony. Thanks!

Your original (mode 2) never even pulled focus on the lights behind you. The mode 1 did pull focus and is way better. I've upgraded the firmware and its night and day. I'm very happy with it. Hi Gordon, thanks for this update. I've been following your reviews on the MkIII with interest. I so want to own this camera but the concerns raised by various vloggers including yourself caused some concern. The comparison between the two modes seems marginal but at Canon appears to be moving in the right direction, albeit slowly. Keep up the good work. We appreciate it.

Amazingly helpful video! Thank you! I'm looking for my first camera for vlogging and also interviews. I love everything about the G7X III but was worried that the firmware update hadn't fixed the AF problem enough. There all sorts of opinions out there about this. One popular vlogger made a video and she said she would tell if the AF was fixed ... and then just gave her opinion about what she had heard that wasn't good and didn't actually test the new update ... lame. And then some others tested it by walking around but never moving the camera off of their face to see how it focused when you moved it and then how quickly it reacquired the focus on their face. This video finally gave me what I needed see. I am so excited to buy this camera. I'm getting it with the cool looking silver medal on black style. Thank you so much, I really appreciate this excellent video! Cheers! :-)

It seems both modes are slower to focus in 4K. In 1080p the new Mode 1 is much better and faster focus. Maybe the 4K data rate is too much for the compact camera to keep up with. I had similar issues on the G9X MkI. In video mode the focus point box hunts around the screen, looking for a new focal point. Good test shots. At least Canon are doing firmware updates now.

Useful review. But you need to test for the overheating problem in 4K. It is seriously bad, and not fixed by the clock resetting. You cannot shoot in 4K for more than 20 minutes of short-clip shooting without being stopped. And once it prevents you from continuing, you cannot resume for at least 5 minutes, and after that, after one or two short clips it stops you again. Try this.

Thanks for this video. Thank you very much again. I think the Canon g7x Mark III is a better solution because it has a microphone input (3.5mm), of course it's a big issue that will put the microphone but lately there are videos that give solutions to it. In addition, I am personally interested in live streming in cases where the 4G network also helps. I think I should choose a smaller resolution in this case but I will necessarily compromise. Great subject for me and the f1.8 for low lighting like dusk. Combining all of the above, I think my choice once I decide to buy a camera will be the Canon g7x Mark III. The Sony RX100 VII is good but for so much more money than the Canon g7x Mark III I think it's unprofitable.

Canon cannot just put DPAF in a camera. It is embedded in the sensor hardware. As in this camera they used a Sony sensor, they got to rely on software AF routines, which they, unlike Sony, hadn’t figured up just yet.

Let me try to sum up : The AF on the Gx7 II was good. Canon tried to improve that Mark II AF on their third G7x but it was a total failure. People (real people, not testers/reviewers) complained, and returned their cameras. To solve that issue, instead of coming back to the Gx7 Mark II AF, Canon added another AF mode in the video menu, so people can now choose between a slightly improved awful AF (Mode 2), and a new (but still old) very bad AF (Mode 1). Looks like there is an hardware difference between Mark II and Mark III, as Canon did not managed to solve the issue while they had 3 months to do so. I'm also very surprised to see that most complains came from real users, those who are paying for their cameras, not from reviewers/testers.

@@MarkMcLT I got my Mark 5A for about 800 USD on a sale. If you don't need audio input and 120mm on the long end, the 5A is a cracking little camera.

The month of October is packed with tech goodies (cellphones & Cameras) maybe Canon is not dead on Arrival any more.they are listened .Giving folks updates and tools we need . On another note I think the Camera Conspiracies guy ( Casey ) is going to go trick or treating dressed as you . Thank for yet another great test .

It seems the Mode 2 was able to track your face better than the Mode 1... the Mode 1 seems to struggle a bit... weird that means the old autofocus is better than the new one

Has the new update fixed the overheating issue?
@cameralabs5 жыл бұрын
No, it only addresses autofocus.
@momchilyordanov81905 жыл бұрын
I see virtually no difference between the Mode 1 and Mode 2 outside. And really almost no difference between 1080 and 4k. A side note - If I was a vlogger, I would just shoot 1080 and save myself from the "15 GB footage form my 30 min vlog" illnes. But tbh, for a camera that was panned not to have good continuous AF, pretty much all 6 min outside were in focus. Inside was bad, though. Either Mode 1 or 2 was not good enough. Apparently it needs proper lighting to function well.

Yat Yat If that’s your price point I’d buy the M50. I have two of them. Best camera for content creation at that price hands down. I also own an RX100 VII and still prefer the M50. I had a G7X Mark II for years and it never let me down but once you have DPAF or Sony’s phase detection the G7X just doesn’t cut it. Audio is also a huge thing to consider. G7X is notoriously noisy with the in camera mics. M50 sounds way better even without a mic.
@yatyat27915 жыл бұрын
@@fatheringautism ohh I think I might start looking for reviews of m50 as well :) I just want a best for travel videos and photos in compact camera.. would you think m50 is also good on that or g7x mark ii is better on photos as well? Thanks 😊
@fatheringautism5 жыл бұрын
Yat Yat I use manual focus a lot when taking photos. M50 has focus peaking which is nice. In that price range I’d say it is the best option. Otherwise I would look at an older RX100 but I like the colors out of Canon better. I’m a little bitter though. I waited for the G7X III for months with high expectations. I used it for one vlog when I got it and returned it the next day. I like my Sony because it just does everything well but the M50 is the first camera I pick up. It looks better out of camera and the ease of use is much better than the RX100.

@s2_petiteworld2065 жыл бұрын
He is talking about the background blur. If you look at the lights, they get bigger and smaller like they're 'breathing' because the autofocus is trying to find what to focus but the firmware is helping it lock onto his face.

Although better, the auto focus on the G7xiii is still not great. Especially compared to the Sony Rx100vii. Unfortunately the Sony is twice as expensive and only has an f2.8 lens compared to the Canon’s f1.8 AND it lacks an ND filter. I am glad that both the G7Xiii & Sony RX100vii got an ext mic jack this year...but they are still both lacking in some was when it comes to finding the perfect vlogging camera. Perhaps they will take the feedback to heart and come out with the perfect vlogging camera next year.
@cameralabs5 жыл бұрын
All they need to do is put a mic jack on the RX100 VA - and make it cheaper!

Gordon Laing totally agree Gordon. That would be the PERFECT vlogging camera. If only Sony & Canon are listening to all this feedback!
@aoikemono64145 жыл бұрын
I am currently using the g7x iii and am very disappointed with the autofocus. I don't blog and put my face 1 foot away from the camera. I record low light street scenes. And not very low light. There are a bunch of bright street lamps. It can actually be rather harsh. I've recorded a dozen videos and not one is truly in focus. It looks sort of in focus in the preview window from far away but when you actually watch it, it is out of focus. Focus is much harder for vloggers with their face being close and the depth of field being narrow when up close. But at medium and far distances it should be way better. This was not the case for the g7x iii. I am not remotely convinced by the footage here that Canon knows what they are doing. It was broken from the onset and they released it and after two months you get basically no improvement. And I'm talking about autofocus in video in general, not as a vlogger but for the type of recording I do which is medium distances usually. That bokeh tree was NEVER in focus. And if I was trying to record a subject that moves, I would just forget about my camera and use my phone. Gordon mentions several times that the face detect fully recognizes his face but the autofocus can't keep up. It has nothing to do with the speed of the autofocus motor. It can snap to that focus if it wanted to. It already does that when you take a picture and tap on a blurry face. It snaps to it instantly and highlights the face in a box. Yet in video the facial recognition and the autofocus system are completely out of sync. It makes absolutely no sense. This is a recurring complaint by other reviewers. They see me but they can't focus on me. How stupid is that? The autofocus even with the new firmware looks worse than the g7x ii which is shameful. You know there is a serious underlying issue that can't be fixed with firmware, likely some underlying hardware difference, that canon is trying to cover up. They should have never released this camera at all, and definitely shouldn't have attached any sort of vlogger credentials to it or included a microphone jack. If this was a cut down lower cost still images only camera, it would be acceptable. But it's not. And it's not acceptable in this day and age when any phone released in the past 3 years can do better video. Nevermind 4k. Just simply focusing properly. And if you were wondering, yes I had the g5x ii and it has the same bad video autofocusing. Actually I think it's slightly better but not by much.

I find that the new firmware actually makes the focus MORE unreliable... in Mode 1 it hunts constantly.. and in Mode 2 it is still very ba for any subject that is moving.. This camera remains a huge disappointment for me and a real black eye for Canon!!
@OurTeslaModelXJourney4 жыл бұрын
With either mode, the user has to keep waiting, clicking on what they want in focus, trying to compensate for the poor camera. It's draining and disappointing.

Hi Gordon!! Yes the Mark V was a great little pocket camera. I would still have it if it wasn’t stolen!!!! Also one of the reasons why I’ve been on KZbin and camera sites looking for a replacement. I’m thinking about the VII but at 1200, I think I should save up and get a FUJI or maybe even an APS C Sony camera - although I would be sacrificing the size. Man, I loved my little RX100 V.
