My views from watching vlogs and live streams: For filming a story, constraining the audiences attention to where you want is important. For vlogging at a location, I think having the audience see the background is best. It psychologically draws them into the location. It becomes like having a conversation in person. We look at the presenter's face for a bit and it's in full focus while the rest of the screen is naturally no longer in focus. We look away from the presenter's face as we would in a natural conversation. What we're looking at snaps into focus and the presenter's face becomes blurred because that's just how eyes work. As for the audio I think the addition of the mic jack is fantastic, but that new Rode doesn't sound all that great, does it. For vlogging I'd simply go with an action cam. The Sony or new DJI action cams look pretty decent and is probably the best value given the features. Maybe you'd want to put the DJI on a gimbal. For people who take vlogging or streaming seriously they'd probably want to go with a split solution of an action cam and an aps-c camera paired with a smartphone.

You can add ND to any RX100 base on magnets (you can buy ready sets). I’ve just left a comment above that pretty much confirms my view. Bureaucracy in the design phase always prevents these manufacturers from creating the perfect product. For some reason they just don’t want to offer it, in case it impeaches on other models in their lineup, or affects the release/sales of future products. What they fail to recognise is that if they nail a release well enough, then customers will gain confidence and brand loyalty may return to how it was in the good old days. Sadly, I can’t see that happening, but now is the time to do it, because Sony is stealing Canon customers left, right and centre, especially from the DSLR market, which is feeding down to the compact camera market, too, which I suspect is because of what I’ve just said above. Someone at Canon has to say enough is enough, and spend the money on getting better products out there.

For still photography, how do you rate the the Sony RX10 vii vs. the Canon G5X Mark II? The Sony has a slower lens but with an enticing 24-200mm zoom. The Canon Mark II has a faster lens at 24-120mm. Even though the Sony focuses faster, I worry about its slower lens in low light. For vloggers the Sony outperforms the Canon Mark II because of its superior focusing. But for still photographers, the Canon Mark II performs better in low-light. Does better low-light capability trump faster focus for non-video tasks? Thanks.

The Sony is nice when it works. I’ve had RX100iii, Rx100iv, and RX100V. No, I got them not because I’m rich and bought a newer model when it came out. I got a newer model because the old one started having problems. Always the flash was the first to stop working because it’s thin and fragile power supply lines broke. Then the autofocus followed. I always set the image quality fairly high, about 10M for each photo on average. The result was excellent even when the images were blown up to fill a 65” TV. Now all the photos I take look good on the camera but grainy on a 17” notebook, looking more like 2M photos. I checked the property of these photos and they all still occupied an average of 10M space each. I really like the overall performance of RX100 series over Canon cameras although I always prefer the color of the Canon. Now I realize that I have to start to argue why I have to buy a new Sony in less than two years. I’m going to get a Canon this time and see if it lasts longer.

Hello Gordon, Among others I have watched your videos about Sony RX100 VII. Thank you for the good tests. I feel on more safe ground now if or when I decide to get this small technical beauty. Two items have not been spoken much about though. The first is the possibility to release an external flash without the frontal burst from the built-in flash (a small night cap could hide the flash and the sync unit, but it's rather untechnical). I don't know if any of the sockets support an external flash? On my Sony Alfa 900 I have an infrared or wired flash sync in the hot-shoe. Also, is one of the modes allowing more than one shutter speed for flash synchronization? And my second question - I also find the colors from Canon to be superior. But my impression is that a number of color profiles are available, and a similar balanced skin tone can be obtained by choosing the right combination?
@cameralabs5 жыл бұрын
You can certainly tweak the processing on any camera to adjust the tones, curves, etc, but you'd have to experiment. It may not be possible to perfectly match a Canon-look on a Sony due to the parameters they offer, but you can certainly adjust it. As for external flashes, none of these can trigger one beyond using their internal flashes to do so. You;d have to check the web specs for the flash options. PS - if you end up ordering online, please consider going through my price checks here and at cameralabs.com thanks!

The Canon looks like the better camera for real vloggers, who don't really need the long lens but really need the easiest way to upload video's from their phones, especially for hikingvloggers (many of them already use the G7X M2) this would be the better camera as they don't need to carry a laptop. For everything else the Sony is the better one.

Can I just check Gordon, did you have the Canon's at f1.8 for the focus test, and the Sony at f/4? I know you can't go to f1.8 with the Sony but you could go to f2.8 so the both sweat spots for focus would be closer in size perhaps? I'm just wondering if it would have been fairer to stop the Canon's down to 2.8 so all three f-stops matched and all cameras had to deal with an equally shallow focal plane. I understand the FOV would change, so maybe this is why you didn't go this route? Thanks for the vid :)
@cameralabs5 жыл бұрын
Good point. On the one hand it's fairer to put them on the same playing field, but on the other you want to see their differences and benefits and in this case I wanted to check both the focus AND the potential for a shallow depth of field. But in answer to your question, if you're talking about the segment with the fairly lights, the G7X III was at f2.8, the G5X II was at f2.5 and the Sony was about f3.2.
@Astrolavista5 жыл бұрын
@@cameralabsHi thanks for the clarification, yes I was referring to the fairy light segment. F2.5 to F3.2 sounds pretty decent for a comparison in my opinion. I thought I'd heard f4 for the Sony and didn't catch what you were using for the Canons, so wondered if you were wide open. Thanks again :)
@cameralabs5 жыл бұрын
@@Astrolavista hmmm, maybe it was closer to f4 on the Sony, but still on these sensors, that doesn't make much difference in DOF as you can see from the backgrounds.

Try to figure out how Sony can rename the Alternative camera without messing up the RX100 brand. i.e. RX100 VIIA is not going to work.
@cinemenico5 жыл бұрын
The RX100 VI and VII aren't even RX100's anymore imho. They've become travelzooms. Not sure who's asking for longer range and are okay with sacrificing sensitivity/max wide aperture. But it kinda ruins what a premium compact should be about, which is what the RX100 series originated as. For all I care they rename 'em to TX100 cams. They could use the last two digit as the year they're released. E.g. the 2020 RX100 VIIA would be the RX100M20 or RX120.

I have the G7X MK1 and looking at upgrading now that it’s available with a mic input. Incredibly, both the Sony and Canon models seem to have their own flaws, even after several iterations. The Sony seems like it’s a great choice, so many great features but no ND filter? That’s insane, especially at the price point. The Canon (G7X III) has the ND filter, but is likely rendered useless because the AF will mean nothing’s in focus. Canon had a real opportunity to steal so many customers from Sony, they just had to nail that AF and offer 24p. They also had a real opportunity to double up on that by sticking a mic input on the G5X MKII. Right now these manufacturers need to put out the absolute best they have, and whoever is in charge of making decisions on what features to offer needs to be sacked, because it’s costing them (mainly Canon) millions in revenue. If you’re a blogger, maybe the Sony would be the better choice. But, for me (shooting mainly photos with occasional video), and for the price point, having the ND filter is preferred. Even then, I think I’ll stick with the G7X MKI, and I suspect many others will do the same.
@cameralabs5 жыл бұрын
Remember Sony offers you a model with an ND filter, f1.8 lens and great AF in the RX100 VA. The longer lens in the 6 and 7 make it harder to implement an ND and they're really going up against phones which can't zoom as far.
@mrwriter865 жыл бұрын
Gordon Laing Thanks for your reply, Gordon. You’re right, the RX100 VA is a really good option. I suppose the search for the perfect camera will continue, in general, until the right balance is struck. For me, ND and 3.5mm input are a must have, especially for these fast lenses, and outstanding video capture capability. I take your point regarding the ND being difficult in the longer lens, that makes sense. I just figured that a serious photographer would be the audience for the VII and as such, would consider an ND as a must have 🤷♂️

It’s such a hard decision due to bad auto focus for the mark 3 but the color selection on the Mk7 is just bad to be honest. Hard to decide, probably gonna for the the canon.

I think that your fellow Brit - Philip Bloom - showed in his recent video about Sony RX100 VII that you can attach a small magnetic ND filter to the lens. It’s an extra thing you need to remember to carry with you but it is a useful tip. Anyway personally I still believe that Sony needs some serious work in their colour department. Canon looked so much better in that regard.

Ok. Sony has better AF and better specs especially for photography. Canon has better images. Anyone who goes for the Sony needs to do color grading in post a lot or do in camera adjustments. Anyone who goes for Canon needs to learn to focus manually or tweak it until you get the best AF results. Based on my experience, the metering in Canon sorts of affects the AF whether in video or photo mode. I find that a spot metering makes the AF just a littllllleeee bit better.
