Its worth noting that the latest firmware update for the R5 did an AMAZING job on fixing overheat. Since I got that version, I had zero overheats. And I use 4k60 and 4khq a lot. Even 4k120 (which always overheated quickest) practicaly doesnt overheat at all in my work. :-)

I have both. Plus an r6. We’re talking about two different qualities of image here though. One sensor is the same as a c300 mkiii (a $10k camera), and one isn’t. Also, one is Netflix approved (which speaks to the quality), and one isn’t. That said - I love the r5 as a B or C cam. It’s not a cinema camera though. Not even close.

I do not understand Why do some people exaggerate the problem of Canon overheating? I share my personal experience in a professional project I have been shooting documentaries with the Canon R5 for more than 3 months We shoot for an average of 7 hours a day 80% of the time our format is in 4K HQ Many of the shots are shot at 4K 120 frames and 8K Most locations are outdoors - under direct sunlight | (of course it is winter now) We did not have a problem with the camera overheating even once Just turn off the camera when you are not recording

An R5c with better cooling, without time limit, dual card recording and full size HDMI would be the sweet spot for many I guess. I personally also hope for it to hit the market (as I have already lenses lying around for the RF mount ^^). Though: Could be a "no go" for Canon to protect the bigger cameras in the cinema lineup. The hardware would be capable of doing it. If necessary, they could even remove the internal sensor stabilisation (to keep the sensor cooler). Wouldn´t be that of a big deal with such a small camera (basically every standard gimbal supports the R5 size and weight).

if you put the regular 4k mode in crop mode, you get very near 4K HQ quality and don't have to worry about overheating. in this crop mode, you're getting the oversampling from 8k down to 4k. 4K HQ mode is gorgeous because it's oversampling a full frame 8K down to a full frame 4K. but that's a lot of pixels to process and results in overheating. in crop mode, you don't have to process those cropped out pixels so you get nearly the same level of detail as the 4K HQ mode. all you have to do is manage the cropping.

Wow, Parker, great review! I'm not even interested in the C70, and I have an R5, but I liked this video anyway for the in-depth info you touched on. A lot of it reaffirms what I love about my R5. The overheating issue goes away when recording on the R5 with a Ninja V, so that's not an issue any more in my opinion. The codec is easier to edit with Ninja V files until you get into 8K, which no one really uses much anyway, so again a non-issue of sorts. The CFX card I bought was $400, so that's certainly a consideration, but I shoot mostly photos with a bit less in video, and the CFX card gives me easy control of buffer maxing, but I guess that's not really an issue here because the C70 isn't a photo camera. But it does have to be said that the R5 will shoot for a LONG time recording with the Ninja V without ANY overheating issues, so that point may actually be a wash. I see this as a 10-9 win for the R5. I'll take that! PLUS, the R5 shooting 4K HQ can be considered a win because recording on the Ninja V doesn't overheat, so that one's either a wash or an R5 win. AND I saved about a third of the price of the C70 on my R5 (not "half") and all my moving bird photos or moving subject photos come out at 80-90% good in the worst conditions, even with a 60-600mm Sigma zoom, which is insane. So, in answer to your question, the R5 definitely hits the most marks for me. Thanks for the deep dive on this review!
