So, you wanted an all around hybrid camera that you could take photos and video with... the R6 is ahead of it's direct competitor the A7III in that it has better AF/EVF/IBIS, can do 4K 60 (A7III is limited to cropped 4K 30), has a 20 MP sensor with the new AA filter that gives a resolving power about the same as a 26 MP sensor (The A7III is 24 MP with a regular AA filter). On average the A7III overheats in 4K 30 in about 20 minutes (Daniel Schiffer confirmed this on his latest video with Matti Happoja) but Sony has kept the overheating issue quiet and has not been open about record limits the way Canon was with the R5 and R6... But now you are considering getting a camera with a 12 MP sensor out of 2007 that cannot be used as a pro photo camera as a replacement as an all round photo/video camera that you have been looking for? This makes no sense whatsoever... and that camera costs about $1000 cdn more than an R6. I remember when the A7III was announced and people bought into the hype initially too (the Sony hype train is hardcore, my feed is lit up with hundreds of videos the day any new Sony camera is announced, even the ZV1). But then after some time with it, a huge chunk of KZbinrs sold it and went back to the R. Not many people bought the A7SII, it was pretty niche and those who did also had to splash out thousands of dollars on a second camera for photos (or were Sony Ambassadors and had multiple cameras anyway). I'm wondering how many people will make the mistake and buy the A7SIII and after spending all that money, realize that they will have to spend more on another camera for photos... because after all, resolution for pro photography is more important than resolution for video... especially when 98% of all video being made these days ends up in 8 bit, IPB, on KZbin, being viewed in 480p-1080p on tiny cellphone screens.... and people who shoot nothing but video professionally will most likely need a cinema camera.

@@77dris I think people are misunderstanding the issue in regards to the heat management problems of the R5/R6. It's not the fact that it overheats. Plenty of cameras do. It's how long it takes to recover before you can make full use of it again. The camera has to cool for at LEAST 20 minutes to get back partial video use. Full video use takes even longer. And that's in "ideal" conditions. Good luck shooting in the summer or in a warm environment. 20+ minutes is a long time to wait for a tool that is often made to capture things in the moment. And if one is not going to use the video tools then they're just overpaying for features that they'll barely use. If canon is able to resolve the cooldown times these could turn into very good hybrid cameras. But as it is right now they excellent, albeit overpriced, stills cameras. Maybe they have equal or better specs compared to brand competitors. But what do specs matter if you can't actually make use of them for long periods of time. Maybe the Sony equiv's aren't as flashy, but when compared to the R5/R6 they work, and you don't have to limit their use nearly as much. And a basic tool that works when you need it to is of far greater use than one that only works part of the time. A lot of people are talking about these cameras in regards to their specific needs/wants. That's understandable to an extent, but these cameras are not being marketed to a specific group.

Glad to see some people (you and Gerald) are actually stating that these are amazing stills cameras. The trouble with most KZbin reviews is they are overly videocentric, which sort of makes sense given KZbin is a video platform. But these are hybrid cameras so something isn't going to work as well a dedicated tool. Much like using a shampoo-conditioner, it's convenient but won't do as good a job as separate products. To me, and I'm a stills only shooter, it would make a lot more sense to use something from Blackmagic if I was to shoot video. They seem to deliver the goods at an affordable price, and have an amazing piece of software to process and edit the footage bundled with them. I'm definitely being swayed towards mirrorless with the R6, if only I had the spare cash, as it will perfectly suit my needs. It's always about getting the right tool for the job.

Interesting thoughts. I still have my order in for the R5, interested to see how it holds up in my own workflow. I also feel like canon will possible drop some sort of firmware update to address some of it because it seems like the overheating is more of a time thing rather than a temperature thing. That being said, if the A7SIII had a few more megapickles I would probably get that. Unfortunately 12MP is just not there for me for printing

So all this time we have been shooting on Sony's and Panasonics with the same crappy 4k 24/30 that these cameras can do. Some of those Sonys and Pannys even over heated plus other issues. But now all of a sudden everyone is so professional 4k24/30 just wont do, its unusable and utterly useless, "Its a real problem" you all say. And everyone is so pro they must be able to shoot 8k and 4k 60 plus for hours at a time, yet complain about how hard it is to edit and store these files because apparently these pros who have clients that will not stand for cool down times, cant afford capable computers or multiple cameras as backup. Suddenly all these pros who claim that any camera that cannot do 8k RAW for 1 hour plus interviews is not a real 8k camera. (because we all need more talking head videos shot at 4k 60 or better) These same pros absolutely must shoot video only with DSLR's instead of dedicated cinema cameras. Its also interesting to see these folks who MUST have a camera that is as capable a video camera as it is a photo camera, and vice versa, but suddenly are ok with paying $1000 more for a Sony with weak stills capabilities, but not ok with paying 1000 less for the R6 that is twice the stills camera but not quite the video camera of the Sony. Can we all just admit that we are all a bunch of video shooters and that is the priority here. We want the best video functionality available for as little money as possible, a video camera in a still camera body. Then we can leave canon out of it, ignore their marketing and know that they ALWAYS prioritize stills over video. We did this for years with Nikon, we can do it with Canon as well. Canon should be getting nothing but props for the camera they just made, its amazing if your priority is stills, its probably the greatest camera value ever made (consider every EF lens is now stabilized, the speed and accuracy of the AF and eye and animal Focus weather sealing, and shock resistance) if we look at what these things can do with stills only, the fact that the R5 is arguably the greatest stills camera ever made under 4 grand is a really poor reason not to buy these, unless its all about video for you. :)

"Can we all just admit that we are all a bunch of video shooters and that is the priority here. Let's not act like a 9 figure market hasn't been created for Video cams in still cam bodies. People don't want to shoot on cinema cams. They want to lug around a DSLR and shoot great video.

Lol i havent heard a single person say anything bad about the stills side of this camera, it's amazing, no one is debating that. But on the video side Canon just marketed the R5 poorly, 8K RAW was the headline feature and it shouldnt have been. The standard 4K on the R5 doesnt look that great, the HQ and 8K look amazing but the heat is a huge issue. It would be one thing if the cooldown period was short but its not at all. I think the biggest issue is that for years Canon has released hybrid cams that had some kind of catch, like the huge crop in 4k on the 5D4 or the MJPEG codec. Lots of people switched to Sony or Panasonic for video. So when the specs leaked video shooters got excited that Canon was finally coming out with a no compromises camera with a sick feature set and were super disappointed to find out about the overheating limitations. It was a bummer.
@SimonMichaelBenz4 жыл бұрын
@@AP-zo1ww Up to now the market that wanted a video cam that shoots stills has had to compromise in some way. Only with the R5 and 6 are we saying compromise is not an option, all while saying we are switching to a camera (a7s3) that has massive compromises where stills are concerned. If you just want to shoot video, R5-6 do fullframe 4k 24/30 with no over heating, people were able to make that work just fine last year, only now is that completely unacceptable. If you are a Canon user and need to stay that way, you work with what you have, 4k 24/30 or external HQ. I also suspect Canon will figure a way to get longer running 4k 60 out of the R5 with firmware, since it has the processing power.

I just never really liked the thought of releasing gimmicky features or novelty features. I never understood why All-I said to be a better quality than IPB. The main idea of All-I is to have it easier for the NLE software to go to any frame it needs and just decode this one. IPB always has to be decoded back to the I-frame. Depending on the number of P and B-frames this can take a while especially if your computer doesn't support hardware decoding of H264 or H265. The drawback of All-I is you need more MBits/sec because the I-compression is by far not that efficient as P and B. You may be able to think about a scene which looks better in All-I or another in IBP. I guess since All-I is easier to edit Canon thought it is more professional. If for the user All-I is really given a better overall picture quality I have my doubts. Thanks for your thoughts about the R6. I am photo first so for me it doesn't imply an problem that the camera overheats.

My question given the recent news about the R5 and removing the card to make the camera run for over 3 hours, Would the R6 do the same for 60p 4k and 120 HD? As the 60p 4k overheating externally was the only issue for me. If it doesn't and you have a ninja v or similar you get a 10bit full-frame 30p or 60p camera which has great autofocus and for a mainly one person operation this means you can do some fantastic work, as there is nothing at that price point with all those features. It would also be a good camera to turn to an ENG rig with the variable ND ef adapter with the control ring, I think the camera has legs if you know the weaknesses. If removing the SD card when recording externally or using a dummy battery doesn't solve the 60p overheating issue then it may be a case ongoing to Sony for me. As the majority of jobs are interviews and b-roll and I would need reliable 60p for my b-roll. So need another overheating test for that R6 dummy battery and without sd card, As I still want it despite the concerns and if I can work around them, although hope is fading.

You miss the point totally ! The R5 and R6 was never supposed to be a video camera. They are photography cameras that are supreme to everything that's ever been on the market - that can ALSO do some awesome video. So for someone who is a stills photographer who once in a while also do some video, they would be perfect ! Another thing is - if you compare with Sony's new camera that according to Sony doesn't overheat ( although they do in real world) then the overheating is replaced by scarce weather sealing - people need to understand that if you want something awesome then it will cost a compromise somewhere else !

Great video. You probably want to clarify a key point (at least with the R5, which I have had for a couple of weeks almost). You can shoot 4K24 forever if you want. You can also shoot 4K 24 HQ externally, or 4K 60 externally (to an Atomos for example) with no overheating, or very long run times for 4K60. I think most pros using these as a ‘video rig’ would shoot longer format with an external recorder, so realistically the only times you’ll have an overheating ‘issue’ is if you decide you want to shoot all day with just the camera in high frame rate settings. That isn’t really an issue if you consider the limits for recording and, like you said, plan your day. Shooting burst of b-roll - not an issue. Recording long interviews or scenes? Grab a Ninja5

I've been debating so much about getting the 5dmIV vs. the R6. I shoot mainly stills. Since there are a lot of 5dmIV going on sale in the second hand market, it's quite the opportunity to get on it (currently in the talks with a potential 5dmIV body at the moment as well), though I'm having a hard time deciding if I should just wait and get the R6. Getting the R6 would allow me to still use my canon lenses with the adapter, with also the option of tapping into the new mirrorless glass line-up for the R6. The R6 has lower MP, but from your reviews it doesn't even look much of a deal breaker, plus I won't be blowing up any photos on billboards as well. Any thoughts?

I may have missed it but did Canon say these camera are gonna be workhorse production cameras? Or did people on the internet get crazy about the specs and overhype it? People have been complaining about the specs of Canon for years and they finally develop and release a camera with the "specs" and people are complaining about the limitations. When HD720 video came out some cameras had a record limit of 5 minutes, maybe Canon could have marketed the 8K with 5 minute limit and toned down the expectations. I also think maybe they are playing it safe with the overheating warning. I commend them for "going for it."

I really hope Canon realizes that they can pretty dramatically reduce their overheating problem by simply giving the user the option to record 5.1K video. Every NLE I’ve ever used has zero issues with video sizes that aren’t HD/UHD/DCI. You don’t want the camera to overheat? Record an MP4 or MOV file where the camera doesn’t rescale the video in the camera. They could even nerf it a little and only record it at 8bit 4:2:0 h.264, but at least give us Clog. Also, on the R5, I really hope they give us the option to record raw in super35 mode, again, very unlikely to overheat there. Again, same thing, gives us the option to record in cropped mode (and let us control the crop size) and just record the 1:1 readout without rescaling it in the camera. With the exception of 8K recording, that’d probably completely eliminate heat problems. It’s absurd that they’re rescaling the video in the camera.

Can you discuss the fact that both the R5 and R6 have no overheating problems in 4K HQ modes with an external recorder. Anyone shouting long form interviews can shoot for up to 4 hours without an issue. Check out NoLife reviews. This is surely the set up you want if you are a hybrid shooter and only want one camera to do it all for all. Yes the marketing was terrible by Canon but the fact is that most cameras which push the boundaries of technology will have limits. If Canon had said you can shoot 10 mins in 8K, or 4K 120 then we would not be having these conversations and all be delighted. So for me, let’s look at what we can get from the camera’s and not what we can’t.

Mario Solorzano the 4K hq isn’t the best 4K lol. It’s a little sharper, but the a7siii has more accurate color, better dynamic range, and a higher bit depth when recording externally than the EOS r5/6. Being marginally sharper (downsampled from 6k) is not worth it in any stretch. Also the fact that the siii has little to no quality variation between 24/30/60/120 compared to the obvious differences between 4K 120 and 4K 30 in the EOS r5 puts it well ahead for 4K video. For stills, these will be better howeverz
@marioslrzn4 жыл бұрын
RiceCube Tech You do realize that a 1 to 1 pixel readout suffers from the same issues as line skipping, it’ll have that digital sharpening look vs a downsampled from 8k to 4k, that’s like comparing 1080i to 1080p...But it’s going to be fun seeing all the video comparisons, there’s a big difference looking at a screen shot vs seeing video in motion.
@RiceCubeTech4 жыл бұрын
Mario Solorzano it’s not line skipped though. The SIIIs big marketing push, is that at the highest recording settings, it’s not line skipped lol. Regardless of line skipping, even if it had it, the siii still offers about 2 stops more dynamic range, and a higher recording bit depth and bit rate, when externally and internally recording. Not to mention, for video, the lowlight is better. Especially with the dual iso kicking in at 16000
@marioslrzn4 жыл бұрын
RiceCube Tech Just cause sony says it has 15 stops of DR, I haven’t seen any impressive footage of the A7Siii. Maybe because I’m looking at it through my 65” OLED and R5 footages looks way better than anything from the A7SIII. A 1 to 1 pixel readout doesn’t give you better quality over a supersampled, that’s the misleading part, i guess sony marketing to fanboys. A 1 to 1 pixel readout is going to be more susceptible to banding and moire than a sample image, don’t worry we’re going to get a lot of video comparison. You can’t judge video quality from a screen shot, you can only judge it while in motion

I think you are broad brushing the r5. If you shoot 4k non cropped, non oversampled, and clog, is it a good video camera? Does it overheat? What other canon mirrorless or dslr shoots ALL-I Clog 4k uncropped (forget the oversampled), how many professional jobs require more than that? Requires 8k, or oversampled 4k. Fact is the r5 is a better video camera than the other canon dslr or mirrorless right? When did 8k become the professional requirements for professional videos? I am confused. What are main stream movies shot in?
@stalmanplus4 жыл бұрын
It’s not about 8K at all. The only way to shoot the R5 without overheating is using the line skipped 4K mode. It looks decent but visibly softer than the oversampled and with the a7SIII on the horizon you’ll not only get a sharper image with no overheating and no record limits, but also visibly more dynamic range. Those are a lot of trade offs if this will be someone’s primary video camera.

@@stalmanplus if you are invested in tons of canon gear, what DSLR/mirrorless would you recommend for best 4k shooting? You are saying you would not recommend it to be a professional main A camera because basically 30 minute time limit (not overheat), and it is not oversampled 4k and dynamic range is not as good as sony. When the 4k features are far better than previous canon 4k features in dslrs and canon dslrs can be used for professional video. Look at how the 5dmark2 was used. Main camera for tv episode, used for a movie. @SimonMichaelBenz4 жыл бұрын
Sony will face the same issue, physics is physics. If you shoot at big megapixels you need more processing power and get more heat. Sony would have to crop, lower quality or in some way gimp the video to shoot 4k 60plus on a 45 plus MP full frame camera all day long. That is why this whole thing is so bizarre, Sony gimped the 7s3 to give us that 4k60 unlimited, the thing is a 12 MP camera in 2020, wedding photos will look like they were shot with an Iphone on this thing, and it still costs over 3 grand, it cost MORE than the R6 and shoots crappier 4k 60, that is very bad, people are just focusing only on the positives of that camera, and only on the negatives of the Rs.

the way i feel about this cameras is like someone would have told me they would give me $10.000, and after months of waiting and imagining how i would spend it, you finally get those $10.000 but you re only allowed to spend like $300.
